Morning Debriefing 6/30/11

1) Watch comedic brilliance by Jon Dore & Rory Scovel on Conan. Oh yeah, they might do the same thing at Meltdown Comics on August 11th.

2) Want to be on a “High School Talent Show”?

Hot House, which normally hosts a fantastic “secret” comedy show, is putting the 3rd Annual Hot House High School Talent Show. Already, it’s half booked, but if you’re interested, the show is on Thurs. July 21st 8PM and they’re looking to book all types of variety/comedy/character acts of varying lengths – but – no stand up (unless it is part of a larger character piece).

The basic theme of the night is the show takes place in a High School Auditorium hosted by the Vice Principal of Affairs. Talent must decide up front whether to play a Student or an Administrator. And all acts should be between thirty seconds to three minutes (five if there is a real need) And let us know the general concept beforehand.

3) So Café Muse, to those comedians that put up with its open mic or shows, is now gone. No more comedy will take place within its walls despite it being next door to the Comedy Central Stages. We’re frankly surprised that it lasted this long as every time we’ve been there something along the lines of a frustrated white kid in his late 20’s would ask anyone who was black to be his black friend 5 minutes over the light would happen.

4) Don’t follow @MitziShore. It’s not her. Besides, gaining favor with her and an audition to be passed at the Comedy Store is a whole lot harder than just getting a fake account of her to follow you on Twitter.

Morning Debriefing 6/29/11

1) Last night, I went to the “scene” open mic in Portland at Suki’s and immediately thought, “Man, I wish I started comedy in Portland.” Ironically enough, as I’m dropping in from LA, the entire Portland comedy scene, which apparently was in attendance, was saying good bye to one of their heroes Richard Bain, who is coming down to LA. From the greenest-of-the-green-newbies to mainstays and respected figures in Portland comedy, everyone was there in support of Bain.

LA is so huge, just physically, and many comedians are so incredibly busy with their own act, sketch group that has to put a video out weekly, podcast that records whenever it gets a chance, show or two that they have to produce and promote, that the whole comedy scene in LA could never be in full attendance of anything. Yet, seeing even more camaraderie in comedy than the pockets of it that exist in LA would not only intrinsically make for better comedy, but would further dispel that image that LA’s a soul sucking town.

So, yes, I’m saying that if you’re a comedian in LA, go see a show that you’re not on or go support another comedian without trying to get booked.

2) Congratulations to Nick Kroll on getting the Nick Show Kroll picked up and Peter Atencio being attached to the Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele Project all for Comedy Central. Also, congrats to Comedy Central for making some solid picks for this season. [via Deadline]

6) I got a chance to catch the Tulsa Skull Swingers composed of hilarious people in their own right: Craig Anton, Ron Lynch, Blaine Capatch, and Amit Itelman at 3 Clubs last night. Simply amazing. 2) Andrés Du Bouchet’s taping is tonight 10PM at Bar Lubitsch (7702 Santa Monica Blvd., West Hollywood, CA). This is a perfect part to be a part of comedy history/catch his one-of-a-kind absurdist stand-up/laugh until it hurts and then finding a way to laugh some more.

3) Thai Rivera will be debuting his new self-titled album at the Ontario Improv (4555 Mills Circle, Ontario, CA) next Thurs. June 16th 8PM. Thai’s proof that grinding it out at open mics, no matter where they are or how they are, can, through tireless hard work pays off and does so on your own terms (i.e. headlining your own show to release your own CD).

4) Melissa Villasenor auditions at America’s Got Talent. She gives that show’s name validation. Seriously. I first saw her an indie, topic based, comedy show a year ago, and only a month or so ago, she got passed at the Comedy Store as a regular, and now, this. 9) It has come to the attention of the Comedy Bureau that two videos in particular on Osama Bin Laden’s death featuring the amazing Table of Galaxies (the hilarious duo of James Adomian and Whitest Kids U Know’s Trevor Moore) and Hasan Minhaj didn’t get nearly enough press (even though they’ve already been posted here) due to the political nature of the humor in them. Interestingly enough, we have not vilified Bin Laden the same way we have Adolf Hitler. Hitler is one of the “go to” references for evil incarnate and Bin Laden is far from that. It’s not like when Indiana Jones met Hitler when there was no doubt that Indy is looking into the face of evil. The annoucement of Osama Bin Laden’s death in the social networking age where “no stone goes unturned” and subsequently made fun of brought about jokes about the death of Osama Bin Laden explore the mythos behind Osama Bin Laden, even questioning whether he really died or not. 11) Apparently Louis CK dropped in at independent stand-up show, Frolic! and the Hollywood Improv last night while Seinfeld dropped in at the Comedy Store in Picadilly, a popular neighborhood in London. What do these two things have in common. I didn’t get to see them. Damn.

Morning Debriefing 6/1/11

1) Due to underwhelming traffic, we, here at the Comedy Bureau, got the hint, so the Morning Debriefing is back (though it will probably never be posted in the official “morning”).

2) The Los Angeles Comedy Festival is accepting submissions for their 10th edition taking place this fall. More details to follow soon.

3) Check out comedy podcasting hub Earwolf’s new site! A fantastic thing got pretty damn fantastic!!!

4) Kyle Cease has a new video to push a self-help brand of comedy on his “Wake the Hell Up Comedy Tour” [via Punchline]. "He’s doing something pretty new in comedy. He’s using it to get a point across.“-testimonial from girl who has obviously not watched Bill Hicks or any number of comedians. It’s only a matter of time until a parody comes out.

5) Brand new to Conan: The Pardo Patrol. Let’s hope this becomes an actual regular segment on Conan.

6) Behind the story of Camp Crystal Lake, you’ll find Tom McCaffrey, Barry Rothbart, Matt Fulchiron keeping the camp open despite Jason killing more people. This video should be the next installment/re-boot of the Jason franchise.
