Pick of the Day: The Crossword Show with Zach Sherwin 7/19 & 7/20 (in NYC)

After the last two or so years, you’ve probably gotten into crossword puzzles or some form of them or even just had a period of quarantine where you got into it because you were looking something that wasn’t the news.

With all of that said, the mystery of crossword puzzles doesn’t just have to be limited to solving it over coffee or while on break or while hiding the bathroom during your 15. The ever clever Zach Sherwin has devised both one of the most astonishing displays of linguistics and a damn fun live show where a panel of comedians (and the audience) solve a crossword puzzle in real time. Sherwin exquisitely weaves master level wordplay, original rap, and so much more into an experience that will leave you dazzled and wondering, for quite some time, how he came up with all of it.

Zach is bringing The Crossword Show out east to LES’ favorite comedy venue, Caveat in NYC on Tues. Jul. 19th & Wed. Jul. 20th at 7PM ET. Tickets are $15 and you can (and should) go get them here.

Pick of the Day: The Crossword Show with Zach Sherwin (in LA) Wednesdays in October

Even though it has been years since we’ve starting going and marveling at The Crossword Show with Zach Sherwin and its wizardry with words, it’s still remains as one of the most amazing feats of verbal gymnastics that we’ve ever seen in our whole tenure at TCB.

For the uninitiated, Sherwin has excellent comedians on a panel try to solve a very, very fun crossword on stage (along with the audience) and then offers truly mind-bending explanations for the answers and connections to other answers/hints. It’s one of the most enjoyable rides down a rabbit hole that we’ve had at a live show.

Sherwin is gearing up for four editions of The Crossword Show at Dynasty Typewriter this coming October on Wednesdays (10/6, 10/13, 10/20, & 10/27 all at 7:30PM PT). Tickets are $20 in advance and $25 on the day of (proof of vaccination required). Please go get your tickets right now right here.

Zach Sherwin is doing “it” yet again.

By “it”, we mean putting on a dazzling display of how linguistically masterful he is via having comedians solve a crossword puzzle live on stage that is superbly weaved into a theme with jokes, stories, etc. all throughout. It’s quite the spectacle to see especially if you’re wondering how solving a crossword can be a live show.

This edition, this Wed. Aug. 7th at Dynasty Typewriter at the Hayworth Theater, will feature Chris Garcia, Irene Tu, and a “special surprise solver”. Tickets are $10 right now and $15 on the day of. Please go get them here.

Also, if you can’t make it to this one, “it” (The Crossword Show with Zach Sherwin) will be happening monthly at Dynasty Typewriter for the rest of the year!

We saw The Crossword Show last year and are still floored by Zach Sherwin showcasing his command of language and how to twist, turn, and manipulate it all for comedic effect (it made our 100 Best list).

Basically, Zach, his guests, and the audience do an entire crossword puzzle together that’s filled with jokes, factoids, etc. and they are all thematically tied together no matter how disparate the clues and answers might seem.

This latest edition will be on Wed. Mar. 13th 8PM at Dynasty Typewriter at the Hayworth Theater he’ll be joined by a panel of Lisa Loeb, Pete Holmes, and Nicole Holliday (an actual linguistics professor) in case that furthers entices you.

Tickets are $10 in adv. and $15 on the day of the show. So, go get them here ASAP.

Packchella, the comedy music festival that is pretty much right at your doorstep here in LA and not in far away polo fields, returns to The Pack Theater next weekend.

For this year, they’ve got the likes of Eliza Skinner’s Skinner Alive, A Mel Brooks Burlesque Show, Zach Sherwin & Friends, a special episode of This Is Dark Matters where “Music Director Rich Devletian will be joined by an orchestra and a psychic as we attempt to complete Schubert’s Unfinished 8th Symphony with help from the maestro himself FROM BEYOND THE GRAVE!”, $1.000000 Identify That Song Game Show! with Kash Abdulmalik, and much, much more.

If you’ve ever wonder how clever wording in comedy/lyrics in a rap song can get, we’d hope you know Zach Sherwin.

For years, he’s come up with rhymes so clever that he’s done entire songs analyzing a single rhyme in another rap song.

Now he’s just released his second album (his first one as Zach Sherwin instead of his former alias MC Mr. Napkins) Rap! from AST Records and you can and should pick it up here.

1) It’s simply not enough to say that Frolic @ Far Bar is just a great show with a fantastic line-up of comics (which it is).  With live comedy, running over 90 minutes, in my opinion, one enters extremely tricky territory as the audience tires, settles their check, and checks any pertinent e-mail/texts.  Yet producer/comic Josh Rencher

put together such a tightly-run show with a plethora of great comics (who are so funny that it doesn’t matter that they have “credits” even though they all do) comprising what could be four different amazing shows on their own that I was able to sit and watch and laugh with the packed room throughout for the entire duration (approximately 2 hours).  As host (and as cliché as this sounds, it’s true) with the most Asterios Kokkinos said, “There’s no fat on this show.”  Within one of the parts of LA that actually looks like a city and has the type of nightlife where people actually WALK around, Little Tokyo, the hip, though very retro Far Bar offered Rencher’s Frolic! that very intimate setting that live comedy demands to work.  Thus I simply enjoyed a night of some of my absolute favorites comics in LA that are regularly featured here at the Comedy Bureau and more: Host Asterios Kokkinos,

Brent Weinbach,

Zach Sherwin,

Kyle Kinane,

Melissa Villaseñor,

and Eddie Pepitone.

None of those people should be missed wherever they’re performing, but certainly not at the Frolic show.  Unfortunately, Frolic will be on hiatus until a date and location to be yet determined, but check back at the Comedy Bureau for details on the next one.

2) Forget about the N word being taken out of Mark Twain’s Huckleberry Finn and how he must be rolling in his grave LAUGHING and saying, “I told you so!” Go on tonight’s COMEDY CRAWL instead.  Persona @ Hollywood Improv 8PM $5/free for comics, The Josh & Josh Show @ Bar Lubitsch 8:30PM FREE, Fifty First Jokes @ Zephyr Theatre 9:30PM $7 (stand-by only), How to Live with Chelsea Peretti @ UCB Theatre 9:30PM $5.

Sunset Blvd., Hollywood, CA (walk up Martel, past Big Mama’s and Papa’s)/5PM to 11PM/$5/multiple sets allowed

4) Next Tues. Jan. 11th.  Louis CK will be dropping his upcoming album “Hilarious”.  You should go buy it.  I don’t think I can make this anymore matter-of-fact than the last two sentences except for this next one.  Just go and buy it.

5) If you suffer from not having enough Marc Maron in your smartphone like I do, there is now a WTF Podcast w/Marc Maron app available for the iPhone, iPod, and iPad that you can stream multitudes of episodes off of or even be able to call the show when it’s taping.  It’s Marc Maron for only $0.99.  You can’t really turn that down.  Really.

6) My faith in people has just been partially restored (approximately 2%) Conan O’Brien just won a People’s Choice Awards for Best Talk Show Host as you can see here.

7) The Comedy Bureau “Tips Its Hat” today to DAN DOMINGUEZ-“@dandomingueznow And, Lo a pale rider, on a skeletal horse, and Hell followed with him, and behind Hell: Incredible savings! Over 30% off on all housewares!”  Dan not only cheats the edges of absurdity with his comedy, but comprises one third of the force that is the Biggest Mistake Podcast (other 2/3 is Paul Jay and Jen Goldberg) and a major part of the “manly as f” site manosterone.com.  Check back at the Comedy Bureau for show dates as you don’t want to miss whatever Dan is going to say next.  Website. 9) Donate to the Comedy Bureau. This is day 4 without food, and by food, I mean sanity…. Also, day 4 is really day 78.

1) French Toast @ Taix is the “pleasant surprise” kind of a show.  Actually, it’s one hell of a surprise as you are sitting in the lounge of French countryside themed restaurant in Echo Park, Taix, an establishment where comedy might just seem out of place, thinking, “How exactly is this show going to happen?” and then are in for a comedy treat almost in the spirit of the name of the show.  Taking cues from comedy venues of the past, French Toast puts on their show right in front of a brick wall with a lovely decorative fireplace and give you a good old fashioned stand-up comedy show with some of the best, trailblazing comics, up n’ coming comics in the country.

Without EVER running too long, host/co-founder Margie Kment

and guest host Heidi Hayward

(co-founder/normal co-host Zach Sherwin could not be in attendance) ensure a tightly run show that proves Margie’s own words of “keep them wanting more.”  Last night’s incredibly lucky crowd of both comedy fans and open minded people that stuck around for the show were treated to the likes of comics such as Kyle Kinane (pictured at top), Maria Bamford,

Paul Jay,

Holly Mills,

Nick Thune,

and TJ Miller.  Anywhere else in the country, outside of NYC and maybe Chicago, it’s nearly impossible to have a line-up like this in such an intimate venue without charging the audience a single penny to watch the show.  In other words, don’t let your Sunday nights in LA drift off in a stupor of watching whatever happens to be on TV, when there’s a great free comedy show.  French Toast is on every Sunday at Taix (1911 W. Sunset Blvd., Los Angeles, CA in Echo Park) for FREE.  Check back at the Comedy Bureau for details on the next one.

2) While your plans for world domination are still in their formative stages, take a break and go on tonight’s COMEDY CRAWL: start off with What’s Up Tiger Lily? @ Hollywood Studio Bar & Grill 8PM FREE, then go to The Happy Tiki Comedy Show @ Puka Bar 8PM FREE, then go to Melgard Mondays @ Melgard Public House 9PM FREE, then Lower Crust Comedy @ Genghis Cohen 9PM $5, then Keep It Clean @ 1739 Public House w/Ed Greer, Levi MacDougall, Matt Peters, Tess Barker, Michael Gelbart, and Rye Silverman (1739 N. 3) OPEN MIC RUN: SAL’S COMEDY HOLE 7356 Melrose Ave., Los Angeles, CA/Starts 6PM/One item min., CLUB 705 705 Pier Ave., Hermosa Beach, CA/Starts 7PM-ish, TRIBAL CAFE 1651 W. 4) RT @thecomedybureau @pauljaycomic suggested wearing some sort of reporters fedora with a press pass sticking out of it when out as the Comedy Bureau. Thoughts?

5) THANK YOU PunchlineMagazine.com: Louis C.K.’s “Hilarious” will debut on Comedy Central on Jan. 9 at 10 pm EST; DVD out Jan. 11. You’re welcome.
