Pick of the Day: Feminist Buzzkills Live (in NYC) 6/7

June 2, 2023
News
feminist buzzkills, jeff hiller, live podcast, lizz winstead, marie khan, Moji Alawode-El, nyc comedy

Every week since Roe vs. Wade got overturned by our current conservative activist SCOTUS, it seems like some red state passes another bill that takes us back 50 years or more with abortion access. That said, the fight is far from over and no one will have to go it alone thanks to folks like The Daily Show co-creator Lizz Winstead and her amazing org, Abortion Access Front.

Winstead additionally co-hosts a weekly podcast, Feminist Buzzkills, with Moji Alawode-El and Marie Khan that is equal parts catharsis from the present time and rip-roaring satirical takedown of the reality that religious zealots are dictating agency over women’s bodies. And, wouldn’t you know it… they’re actually doing a live taping of Feminist Buzzkills next week in NYC at Drom on Wed. Jun. 7th at 7:30PM that would make for a great opportunity to actually see that you’re not alone in the battle for reproductive rights (and enjoy a nice night out amidst our current dystopia). They’ll even have special guests such as Jeff Hiller from Somebody, Somewhere, TikTok star V. Spehar, and NYC for Abortion Rights‘ Saffie & Henny.

Tickets are going for $25 (w/$20 table min.) and you can (and very much should) get them here.

After a quarter of a century, The Daily Show has been an institution of comedy, both in the realms of late night and political, and has ushered in changes that still reverberate through TV, comedy, and even politics itself to this very day.

So, marking its 25th anniversary is definitely an occasion worth celebrating and having a show for. Thankfully, The Daily Show co-creators Lizz Winstead and Madeleine Smithberg are joining the very first correspondents of The Daily Show, Beth Littleford, Brian Unger, and A. Whitney Brown, to mark the 25 year mark and tell the story of how this pillar of comedy broke its first ground.

The Daily Show Turns 25! will be a live-stream via RushTix on Mon. July 19th at 6PM PT/9PM ET. Tickets/access is only $20 (with an option to donate to Abortion Access Front) and you can (and should) go get them here.

News
abortion access front, dirty dancing, guy branum, helen hong, lizz winstead, morgan murphy

A line-up of Guy Branum, Morgan Murphy, Helen Hong, and Lizz Winstead doing anything should be worth your attention and cold hard cash. Having them virtually gather to riff their way through the iconic 80s film Dirty Dancing ought to be one of the best ways to spend your night on Thurs. Mar. 25th.

Indeed, that’s what that very esteemed panel of brilliant comedians are going to be doing as part of Abortion Access Front’s Dirty Dancing Riff-a-thon that will be streaming on 3/25 at 5PM PT/8PM ET. Of course, proceeds go to Abortion Access Front and all their efforts to support access to abortion worldwide.

Also, depending on how much you donate for live-stream access, you can get some merch, which includes “Special Dirty Dancing themed treats, Eunice Paper Dolls, popcorn, stickers, and more!”

So with all of that said, go get tickets/access/info ASAP.

Abortion Access Front will be live-streaming Vote. No Joke. on Nov. 3rd 9AM PT/12PM ET to 9PM PT/12AM ET. You’ll be able to watch it all for FREE via Abortion Access Front social media platforms on Youtube, Facebook, @abortionfront on Twitter, as well as Comedy Hub’s Twitch channel.

Pick of the Day: Do Re #MeToo: Sexist Songs Reclaimed by Righteous Feminists 9/17

September 4, 2020
News
abortion access front, laura benanti, laura jane grace, lizz winstead, margaret cho

It should be no secret that some of the most popular songs, the ones that people hum until they sing the part of the chorus that they remember, further affirm the patriarchy and limit women to traditional gender roles and expectations in subtle and very not so subtle sexist ways.

Do Re #MeToo is a special evening, presented by Abortion Access Front (AAF), that combines comedy and music to highlight how truly toxically masculine some of music’s hits/bangers/etc. are.

Slated to perform thus far are:

Margaret Cho, Peppermint (RuPaul’s Drag Race, Broadway’s Head Over Heels), Tony Winner Laura Benanti (Gypsy, Into the Woods), Kathy Valentine (The Go-Go’s), Veruca Salt, Bethany Thomas, Laura Jane Grace (Against Me!), Ambrosia Parsley, Holly Miranda, and Jackie Venson.

Lizz Winstead, AAF founder and co-creator of The Daily Show, is set to host and the marvelous Michelle Buteau is set to be a virtual bar tender.

Do Re #MeToo will stream via Crowdcast on Thurs. Sept. 17th at 6PM PT/9PM ET. Admission is pay what you can! Go get your tickets right now right here.

Pick of the Day: Operation Save Abortion 4/30

April 27, 2020
News
abortion access front, beth stelling, dana gould, elizabeth banks, greg proops, jenny slate, josh gondelman, lindy west, lizz winstead, margaret cho, nikki glaser, operation save abortion, sandra bernhard, w kamau bell

The far reaching effects of the COVID-19 pandemic go beyond just the virus spreading and the deaths it causes or even the terrifying economic disruption. For instance, access to independent abortion providers is getting shut down even though it’s an essential, crucial service. It’s heinous to do this sans pandemic, it’s particularly despicable to do during these times with the most devastating pandemic nearly anyone has lived through.

So, Lizz Winstead, the co-creator of The Daily Show, will be leading as the head of Abortion Access Front and hosting this Operation Save Abortion fundraiser to raise money for said independent abortion providers to stay open and operating in these dire times. It’ll be 12 hour live-stream on Instagram Live at the AAFs Instagram @abortionfront going from Thurs. Apr. 30th 7AM PT/10AM ET-7PM PT/10PM ET.

Slated for the fundraising live-stream event is a marvelous row of comedy folks including: Elizabeth Banks, W. Kamau Bell, Nikki Glaser, Jenny Slate, Sandra Bernhard, Margaret Cho, Beth Stelling, Dana Gould, Josh Gondelman, Samantha Irby, Shannon Woodward, Greg Proops (Whose Line Is It Anyway?), Jessica Kirson, Krystyna Hutchinson (co-host of the Guys We F’cked podcast), and Lindy West (Shrill).

That’s not even the whole line-up that already includes many of comedy’s finest, which should make for one damn fine marathon live-stream chock full of stand-up, stories, bits, and more (on top of supporting a very important cause that might have otherwise easily gotten swept under the radar of the COVID-19 news cycle).

FYI, you can support this cause during the live-stream or even before then at keepourclinics.org.
