TCB Debriefing 2/5/24: Laura Peek, Grammys, Dick Turpin, Stand Up NY, Materialists, Alan Partridge, Worth the Wait, Jenny Slate, Karen Gillan, Joe DeRosa

February 7, 2024
News
alan partridge, amazon, dave chappelle, dick turpin, don't tell comedy, grammys, jenny slate, joe derosa, karen gillan, Laura Peek, mary tudor, materialists, noel fielding, stand up ny, ticket giveaway, worth the wait

1. Dave Chappelle won another Grammy for Best Comedy Album. Apparently, Chappelle has achieved a new milestone in his storied career of reframing the category of “Best Comedy Album” to award excellence in being massively out-of-touch and somehow failing upwards anyhow (as well as not recording a comedy album, but doing a special, then releasing the audio from said special to count as an “album”).

2. You’ll know the comedy category in The Grammys is fixed when people like the fan-f’n-tastic Laura Peek have a legit shot at winning. Just watch this Don’t Tell set and you’ll know what we mean.

3. Noel Fielding is returning to something more in his late (as opposed to hosting the Bake Off) with starring as one of history’s more charming highwaymen, Dick Turpin, in The Completely Made-Up Adventures of Dick Turpin. Kind of seems like Our Flag Means Death, but on land, no? Take a gander for yourself with the first official trailer here, then look for it to premiere on Apple TV+ on Mar. 1st.

4. The staffers of Stand Up NY are owed so very much and, as such, are going on strike. Please support them in earning a living wage through their GoFundMe here. Stay in the loop/share @stand_up_ny_strike on IG.

5. Celine Song is moving from her critically acclaimed feature debut of Past Lives into rom com territory with, potentially, Dakota Johnson, Pedro Pascal, and Chris Evans starring in a project called, The Materialists (Variety). Perhaps, Song will bring prestige back into romantic comedies (because well, Woody Allen isn’t going to do that).

6. Even though you didn’t know you needed more of him, Alan Partridge, Steve Coogan‘s most famous bumbling radio DJ character, is set to make a return and what a relief it is (Deadline).

7. Lana Condor is fashioning herself into a rom com star with her latest role in Worth the Wait, a “modern take on Love Actually (which hopefully means it’s less problematic)” boasting a majorly Asian American cast (Variety).

8. Get your full first look at Jenny Slate‘s hour, Seasoned Professional, here. This might be making comedy history as the first special to be taken seriously while done in shorts starting Feb. 23rd on Amazon Prime.

9. The coolest version of Mary Tudor is going to hit the big screen soon as one Karen Gillan will be playing one of history’s most famous Marys (Variety)

10. Free Joe DeRosa tickets! WE GOT FREE JOE DEROSA TICKETS HERE! GET YOUR FREE JOE DEROSA TICKETS HERE! (seriously, we got some free tix to Joe DeRosa at the swanky Peppermint Club; if you want ’em, just let us know at thecomedybureau@gmail.com)

11. We’ll leave you with this: One way to host SNL is get fired from it, appeal to whole demographic of disenfranchised men and libertarians with, admittedly, good comedic technique, get a Netflix special, and have SNL feel like they need to balance out their center left perspective for some reason?

TCB Debriefing 1/14/24: Critics Choice Awards, AI Carlin, Get on Your Knees, Mr. & Mrs. Smith, Laurie Kilmartin, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Jenny Slate, Wes Anderson, Laid, Snowflakes, Drew Barrymore

January 14, 2024
News
ai, critics choice awards, curb your enthusiasm, donald glover, drew barrymore, george carlin, jacqueline novak, jenny slate, kelly carlin, laid, laurie kilmartin, maya erskine, mr and mrs smith, snowflakes, stephanie hsu, wes anderson

1. Barbie and The Bear win for Best Comedy, film and TV show respectively, for the Critics Choice Awards. Barbenheimer was Summer 2023 and Winter 2024 will be “The Barbear”?.

2. AI tried impersonating George Carlin for a whole hour and called it a “George Carlin special” only to offer a disclaimer that it was an impersonation. Suffice it to say, it didn’t go well (stick to original, human Carlin) and Kelly Carlin responded in “kind”.

3. Witness the poesy of fellatio in the celebrated Jacqueline Novak solo show Get On Your Knees that’s due out as a Netflix special on 1/23.

4. The Donald Glover/Maya Erskine version of Mr. & Mrs. Smith is different than the Brad and Angelina version (and definitely the Hitchcock one), but, then again, is it? (it is, it’s more grounded and they’re not such expert level spies) Take a gander at the first full-length trailer here, then look for it on Amazon Prime starting Feb. 2nd.

5. Laurie Kilmartin is coming out with her latest special, the wonderfully named Cis Woke Grief Slut on Jan. 30th, which will probably make it the first noteworthy special of 2024 (sorry Pete Davidson).

6. Here’s the trailer for season 12 of Curb Your Enthusiasm, which is supposedly the final season, but, then again, how many Cher farewell tours were there? Look for what might be the final episodes of Larry David on Curb starting Feb. 4th on Max.

7. Jenny Slate makes shorts classy as they’ve ever been in the first look of her new special Seasoned Professional. Take a gander here, then look for it on Amazon Prime on Feb. 23rd.

8. Wes Anderson already has a cast so stacked that it would be more than enough star power as is with Bill Murray, Michael Cera, and Benecio Del Toro (Deadline). Expect at least 10 more of Hollywood’s biggest stars to sign on.

9. Stephanie Hsu will be the star of Peacock’s latest comedy series, Laid, from Nahnatchka Khan and Sally Bradford McKenna (Variety). Since it’s a comedy that involves confronting the past as a result of all of her former lovers dying all of a sudden, it’s a pretty nice middle ground for Hsu between Everything Everywhere All At Once and Joy Ride.

10. Since Atlanta is over and who knows exactly when the next round of What We Do in The Shadows will be coming, you might be wondering what’s going on with comedy at FX. Cue in the Nick Kroll produced pilot from Ben Kronengold and Rebecca Shaw, Snowflakes (THR).

11. Guy Maddin, the mind behind one of the trippiest documentaries/meta pieces of art we’ve ever seen (My Winnipeg), has a G7 comedy in the works called Rumours with Cate Blanchett and Alicia Vikander already attached (Deadline).

12. Drew Barrymore is getting a fifth season of her daytime talk show (Variety). Daytime is still way more diverse than late night. Weird, isn’t it?

13. We’ll leave you with this: Maybe Jo Koy should have opened with AI written jokes to set expectations lower before launching into his Barbie joke?

Meta Comedy Goes Soft (Kind of) (for the Better) with John Early & Kate Berlant, Joel Kim Booster, and Marcel the Shell

July 1, 2022
News
dean fleischer-camp, jenny slate, joel kim booster, john early, kate berlant, marcel the shell with shoes on, meta comedy, netflix, would it kill you to laugh

Baked in the very DNA of comedy is a mechanism to question that which is largely taken for granted, especially when it shouldn’t be.

As such, comedy can self-regulate as an art form as it is ready, at a tweet’s notice, to make fun itself if any mode of it becomes too commonplace or popular. Getting “meta” in comedy, (i.e. doing comedy about comedy), can serve this purpose and make sure that prevent too many comedians sounding like Seinfeld or skewer edgelord, free-speech-defending comedians that love wheeling-and-dealing with shock or calling out clapter-seeking comedy for being more “brave” than funny.

All that said, the comedic examination of comedy can do more than just satirize form’s well-worn tropes and archetypes. John Early & Kate Berlant’s Peacock special, Would It Kill You to Laugh?, Joel Kim Booster’s Netflix hour, Psychosexual, and the feature length Marcel the Shell with Shoes On film are all amazing displays where examining comedy can actually enlighten and even provide an emotional gravity on top of being so damn funny.

Psychosexual specifically takes on a certain establishment of comedy for a greater truth on top of laughs. Joel Kim Booster examines the concept of identity and the responsibility and reception of jokes depending on who is telling them and who is listening. This comes in opposition to simply having a devil-may-care attitude about it, which has been a prevailing attitude amongst stand-ups for decades. Booster specifically takes a pit stop during his hour special to check in with the crowd, especially one lone straight, cis-white man and how he feels about the various intersectional-ities (i.e. being boisterously queer, Asian, adopted, bipolar, and a comedian) that Booster plays with. Even knowing that this one guy is having a good time and being a good sport, Joel genuinely engages with him to see where he might feel marginalized, depending on how queer or how blue Joel jokes gets. The notion of a single comedian being representative of an entire community of any kind gets turned on its head with satirically putting that responsibility on the audience. The greater truth that Booster so cleverly gets to is that there is no single monolith to any identity and true inclusion means not invalidating someone’s experience no matter what your bias may be.

Alternatively, John & Kate present a collection of deftly crafted sketches with a narrative through line making fun of self-mythologizing as a comedian. Would It Kill You to Laugh? is presented somewhat as a some exclusive primetime TV event that reunites John Early and Kate Berlant, in conversation, after being an internationally renowned comedy duo made famous with a long running 90s network sitcom only to lead to a tragic estrangement lasting several years. Early and Berlant take on all the traditional trappings of comedy success and how they can potentially lead to a unwieldy ego, especially if the comedy that made you famous hasn’t aged so well (their fictional sitcom was called He’s Gay, She’s Half-Jewish playing up every single stereotype they could possibly think of). The precision of John and Kate’s observations on comedy through their looking back at their ridiculous fictional careers make the special a mischievous delight, but shows a path forward for the art form with making sure it never takes itself too seriously no matter what. They even go so far to skewer their own efforts in Would It Kill You To Laugh? with some off-screen narration of scene directions that, in a way, check themselves from getting too overly serious about making sure comedy-at-large doesn’t have an overinflated sense of importance.

Marcel the Shell with Shoes On has always been, above all else, one of the most adorable things that was ever put on the Internet. Thanks to the collaboration of Dean Fleischer-Camp and Jenny Slate and their endlessly creative vision of how to live in a world as a sentient shell, Marcel the Shell has captured the hearts of millions around the world. That’s part of why A24 made a whole movie about him that’s thankfully now in theaters. The fashion in which Marcel is presented in this feature length adaptation of the character is a scripted story following the making of a documentary about the one and only Marcel. Thus, the sort of moments that often would typically get cut out of documentary for time or story progression, despite their emotional resonance, are all shown here. The result is one of the best and most affirming expressions of the human experience that has shown up in your local movie theater this year (or last year or the one before that). The arguments between Camp, the shy documentarian, and Marcel about the value of capturing certain footage or being open and honest on both their parts provide an fascinating emotional through line that you might not get if this was just a montage of Marcel living the cutest life in existence. This sort of trick of seeing the documentary behind the documentary achieves a level of gravitas and humor that truly kept us smiling for nearly the film’s entire running time.

Being “meta” in comedy used to be Andy Kaufman’s game that would be mostly predicated on pranking on a possibly, unsuspecting audience and, for a long time, that was the only way “being meta” was approached (ex. Tim & Eric), but comedy’s essence forces its own examination and, in this case, a reinvention of how it even looks in at itself for greater artistic truth and purpose. Also, in the spirit of this piece, this is admittedly all kind of as intellectually dressed-up of an excuse as we can muster to tell you all that Would It Kill You to Laugh?, Psychosexual, and Marcel the Shell with Shoes On are absolutely fantastic and worth watching immediately and repeatedly.

Even Just the Trailer for Marcel The Shell With Shoes On Will Make Your Day So Much Brighter

Years and years ago, Dean Fleischer-Camp, Jenny Slate, and some of the most adorable stop motion animation we’ve seen since Chicken Run all came together to give the world the wondrous creation that is Marcel The Shell With Shoes On. No matter where you’re coming from, it was near impossible to resist Marcel’s innocent charm and perfectly twee persona.

All the way here, in 2022, Marcel still has kept his very genuine sweetness and hope and is embarking on a full length feature movie of an adventure. Fleischer-Camp and Slate reunited for the film and brought the likes of Isabella Rossellini, and 60 Minutes’ Lesley Stahl (to play herself). The cleverness of the documentary that has Dean following Marcel and his grandma (voiced by Isabella Rossellini) is irresistible and, despite the havoc of the world, had us heartily giggling (and subsequently very much excited to see this Marcel adventure).

Take a gander for yourself with the first official trailer for the Marcel The Shell With Shoes On movie here, then look for it in theaters on Jun. 24th.

Fifi Dosch has taken one hell of a road to get where she is now as a trans woman who, after achieving her goal of getting to the status of paid regular at one of the most legendary comedy clubs in the world, The Comedy Store, found that there was something still very much missing in her life. Dressing up as a woman on stage brought Fifi to the realization that of who she really was and prompted her transition to being an out trans woman. Additionally, that was followed up with, just a week or so before recording this very episode, a decision by Fifi to move on from stand-up entirely, despite being well on her way to her previous goals, to focus on writing and spending more time with the simple pleasures of her life. Fifi takes TCB’s Jake Kroeger through this whole journey as well as dishing out hot takes on this year’s Emmy winners in comedy, SF Sketchfest going virtual for 2021, the “rally to reopen”, and Jenny Slate’s newest hosting gig at Quibi.

Jenny Slate To Host Docu-Series About Organic Aphrodisiacs, “Sex Plants”

September 22, 2020
News
jenny slate, quibi, sex plants

(via Deadline)

Though Quibi has been having quite the tough time launching and getting their sea legs (at a time when the entire entertainment industry is trying to get a new set of sea legs in the world under COVID-19) and are entertaining the idea of potential options to keep going (i.e. a sale or new sources of funding) and, very likely, The Social Dilemma is encouraging people to spend less time on their phones (i.e. the only place you can watch Quibi), they did manage to score some Emmy nominations and a couple of wins as well and they do keep ordering very intriguing things.

Today, the announced another very interesting thing with the order of travel docu-series, Sex Plants. Comedian/actress/writer/voice of Marcel the Sea Shell with Shoes On Jenny Slate will be serving as host and touring the world to explore natural aphrodisiacs as well as having open conversations about, of course, sex. Slate’s vulnerability and frankness should be a pretty entertaining pairing with this topic.

It’s series order like this from Quibi that makes us wonder if they’re going to keep access to their content library limited to mobile devices only.

Pick of the Day: Operation Save Abortion 4/30

The far reaching effects of the COVID-19 pandemic go beyond just the virus spreading and the deaths it causes or even the terrifying economic disruption. For instance, access to independent abortion providers is getting shut down even though it’s an essential, crucial service. It’s heinous to do this sans pandemic, it’s particularly despicable to do during these times with the most devastating pandemic nearly anyone has lived through.

So, Lizz Winstead, the co-creator of The Daily Show, will be leading as the head of Abortion Access Front and hosting this Operation Save Abortion fundraiser to raise money for said independent abortion providers to stay open and operating in these dire times. It’ll be 12 hour live-stream on Instagram Live at the AAFs Instagram @abortionfront going from Thurs. Apr. 30th 7AM PT/10AM ET-7PM PT/10PM ET.

Slated for the fundraising live-stream event is a marvelous row of comedy folks including: Elizabeth Banks, W. Kamau Bell, Nikki Glaser, Jenny Slate, Sandra Bernhard, Margaret Cho, Beth Stelling, Dana Gould, Josh Gondelman, Samantha Irby, Shannon Woodward, Greg Proops (Whose Line Is It Anyway?), Jessica Kirson, Krystyna Hutchinson (co-host of the Guys We F’cked podcast), and Lindy West (Shrill).

That’s not even the whole line-up that already includes many of comedy’s finest, which should make for one damn fine marathon live-stream chock full of stand-up, stories, bits, and more (on top of supporting a very important cause that might have otherwise easily gotten swept under the radar of the COVID-19 news cycle).

FYI, you can support this cause during the live-stream or even before then at keepourclinics.org.

Please Watch and Revel in the Beautiful Humor of Jenny Slate: Stage Fright

Jenny Slate is pure magnetism in such a beautiful, magical way in this very first (which is almost unbelievable given her body of work up until now) hour special Stage Fright and it’s almost as if this special is the sort of platform that Jenny has been ready to take on for quite some time.

Slate’s mere presence is crackling with energy, even before she gets into her myriad of fantastical voices/characters/impressions, and we found ourselves truly entranced by her performance on Stage Fright. The vignettes she presents of her life, whether it be on stage, in a candid interview with family, or via home videos, really make Slate shine even in her vulnerable moments discussing her relation to the name of this special. Also, she just might have more candor than we’ve seen recently with all the deep observations on her life and what she’s willing to share and Stage Fright is all the more powerful for it.

There is a certain mastery of “being in the moment” that flows throughout her entire performance here. Even though this all material that has been worked out to a certain degree, Jenny truly makes this hour feel alive and like you’re seeing something, well, special.

Go see it for yourself as Jenny Slate: Stage Fright is streaming on Netflix as of today.

Perhaps taking a cue from HBO’s latest row of comedy specials, the latest comedy special offering from Netflix, Jenny Slate: Stage Fright, will intercut between documentary footage and stand-up that paints a more complete, deeper picture of Jenny.

Slate, who jumps between starring in such movies as Obvious Child, performing live as a stand-up, and voicing wonderful characters like Marcel the Shell with Shoes On, has such a dynamic, undeniable charm, making you hang on to everything she says.

From the looks of Stage Fright in this trailer, we’ll get a bit of a better glimpse of what drives Jenny (the name of the special perhaps?).

Look for Jenny Slate: Stage Fright to drop on Netflix later this month on Tues. Oct. 22nd.

Amazon and HBO have been lighting it up in terms of announcing and releasing comedy specials over the last several weeks. However, Netflix, probably the current industry leader in releasing comedy specials has two that you really ought to look out for next month.

Nikki Glaser, the arguable reigning queen of the comedy roast, is doing her first Netflix hour special Bangin’ that drops Oct. 1st. See Nikki make the announcement for Bangin’ while in an airplane lavatory.

The wonderful Jenny Slate will also be releasing later in Oct. that will be called Stage Fright. Jenny says, “It’s part stand-up, part documentary about my family, my fears, my heart, and a lot of other things that will make you laugh. Directed by my @gillianrobespierre (the director of Jenny’s star turn Obvious Child). Here’s Jenny’s announcement for Stage Fright that just happens to feature livestock.

So, please mark down 10/1 and 10/22 (or the midnight before those days) and block out the appropriate hour to watch these specials ASAP.

Jenny Slate To Write Book of Feminist Essays

In 2019, Jenny Slate will release a book of feminist essays via publishers Little, Brown, and Company. It’ll focus on her personal experiences in the broader context of being a woman in these times.

While that does seem a far off, we have a feeling it’ll be worth the wait, especially if Slate does her own audiobook.

It would seem that Bill Burr’s F Is For Family paved the way for animated comedies dealing with childhood, but aren’t necessarily “family friendly”.

From Nick Kroll:

It’s about the beautiful nightmare that is puberty and adolescence. The show is based on me and my childhood best friend Andrew Goldberg’s real lives in middle school. Director Gillian Robespierre and Jenny Slate proved to be a winning combo on Obvious Child three years ago.

The two thankfully teamed up again along with writing from Elisabeth Holm with a fantastic cast of Edie Falco, John Turturro, Abby Quinn, and Jay Duplass for Landline.

The trailer shows this movie is as much of a 90s period piece on top of following the lives of what looks to be a very well-crafted, fully realized dysfunctional family.

Landline will have a limited theatrical release on July 21st, then expand to theaters everywhere on August 4th.

Trump has let the states decide whether they want to defund Planned Parenthood or not. So, now, so many people are stepping up to have the back of Planned Parenthood.

So, to support the cause, a special collector’s box set of vinyl records featuring the comedy of Sarah Silverman, Aparna Nancherla, Jenny Slate, Margaret Cho, Tig Notaro, Janeane Garofalo, Pete Holmes, and Zach Galifianakis in addition to music from some of the musicians around like St. Vincent, Sleater-Kinney, Björk, Matt Berninger, Elliott Smith, Sharon Van Etten, Mitski, Feist, and Chvrches will be released soon. All of the comedy comes from Largo’s archives by the way.

Also, we like that the folks behind this project made this note:

Do we know there’s a joke in the name? We do. We hope the title evokes the rich history of 7-inch vinyl records as a medium for protest music and resistance.

Pre-sale date has yet to be announced, but you can get more info here.
