Pick of the Day: How Did This Get Made? 12/11 & 12/18

November 19, 2020
News
how did this get made, jason mantzoukas, june diane raphael, paul scheer

How Did This Get Made? stands as a cornerstone to both comedy and movie podcasts and it has been that way for several years now thanks to the wit and passion of Paul Scheer, June Diane Raphael, and Jason Mantzoukas. Their dissection of movies that present a mystery as to why they even exists is a standard for podcasting that delves into the “best of the worst”.

Next month, HDTGM will be doing two special virtual live-streams via On Location Live that will dive into the holiday movie bargain bin with A Very Nutty Christmas and The Knight Before Christmas. Honestly, tickets for live-stream access would be a pretty swell holiday gift either to friends/family or yourself.

These virtual HDTGM will happen Fri. Dec. 11th & Dec. 18th at 6PM PT/9PM ET. Tickets are $15 (or $25 for both shows). Go get them here before they sell out.

Big Mouth’s Season 4 Trailer Is Here (and Introduces the Anxiety Mosquito)

November 13, 2020
News

Though it is one of the most explicit animated series of all time, Big Mouth has proven over three seasons that it also has plenty of heart, depth, and humanity in following the horrific time that is puberty and playing it out hilariously with a flair of magic realism.

Normally, waiting for this fourth season to come out would have been a little excruciating, but there has been plenty of things in 2020 that kept our minds more than occupied (probably overloaded to be quite frank). So, the arrival of an entire new season of Big Mouth on Fri. Dec. 4th on Netflix is the second of early holiday gifts (the first being a Trump loss of course).

This trailer promises a season that delivers on the high bar that Big Mouth has set for itself as well as introducing a new imaginary character that will surely hit us all way to close to home, the “anxiety mosquito”

Get a taste of all of that here.

Even though they won’t get the gorgeous space of a venue like the Theatre at the Ace Hotel, Young Storytellers will still put on their annual, pull-out-all-the-stops evening, The Biggest Show, that combines your favorite actors and comedy folks with the best stories written by students in their program in benefit of Young Storytellers’ upcoming programs.

This year, they will be doing The Biggest Show virtually with a cast that’s just as biggest and wonderful as any other year. That’ll include Jason Mantzoukas, Aparna Nancherla, Baron Vaughn, Judy Greer, Marcel Spears, Randall Park, and Tony Hale.

Pick of the Day: Young Storytellers: The Story Clubhouse

April 22, 2020
News
jason mantzoukas, john cho, young storytellers

Young Storytellers is a lovely, lovely organization that mentors children into creative writing and kicks it up notch by having their stories read and voiced by some of the best, most accomplished, funniest adults around.

Even in this time of COVID-19, they’re doing spirited, very fun live reads of stories written by their students. This Thursday will feature Feline Invasion by Cairo Raines (mentored by Michael Keller) along with the voices (and Zoom windows) of John Cho, Jason Mantzoukas, and more.

It’s not the normal live stage show that get to dazzle crowds with, but over the weeks that they’ve gone live-streaming and it still has the same charm, but with an arguably more intimate setting with all the talent performing from the comfort of their own homes.

You can watch the latest Young Storytellers: The Story Clubhouse this Thurs. 4/23 at 5PM PT (they have a show every Thurs. right now) on Zoom. Check their Instagram @youngstorytellers for the specific link and updates.

If you’d like to support Young Storytellers, you can donate here.

Pick of the Day: Brighter Comedy (BIG SUNDAY Benefit)

If you can believe it (and we hope that you can because of how much we’ve got listed at our site), there is still plenty of comedy going on and lots of shows are raising money for great causes that are so deserving of your support.

One such event is happening this weekend called Brighter! It’ll be an atypical talk show that features Mickey and Robin Bright (Dannah Phirman, Seth Morris) who are divorcing while in quarantine and getting in touch with the likes of Maria Bamford, Nick Kroll, Jason Mantzoukas, Kate Micucci, Phil LaMarr, Carl Tart, Betsy Sodaro and more playing their neighbors in their “artist commune apartment building” to check-in/get advice to cheer up, especially given their situation. For those missing the sort of fare you’d get to see at UCB in the before times, this might be what you’re looking for.

The show will be in support of BIG SUNDAY, a Los Angeles-based non-profit, organizing free meal delivery for doctors, nurses and staffers who work in the ER in LA. Anyone can watch the show, but they will be taking donations.

Brighter! will be streaming live this Saturday Apr. 11th at 6PM PT at www.brightercomedy.com.

Well, there’s probably not going to be another chance for you to see all these folks on stage together to do improv and it’s for such a great cause (The Improv Project, a free performing arts program for Detroit youth). Also, Mike Schur and Manny Jacinto (also from The Good Place) will be special guests.

So, we definitely think it’s worth the $15-$75 at the gorgeous Palace Theatre as well as making the trip to DTLA. Go get your tickets for The Shirt Show here.

As they’ve already hinted at, Nick Kroll and Andrew Goldberg’s animated comedy Big Mouth, Netflix’s latest animated series geared towards adults, will revel in the surprising highs and the gross lows of puberty. In fact, there’s a bit of magical realism woven through that might just set this series apart from other coming-of-age animated series.

See for yourself in the full trailer here.

Big Mouth starts streaming on Netflix on Friday, September 29th.

It would seem that Bill Burr’s F Is For Family paved the way for animated comedies dealing with childhood, but aren’t necessarily “family friendly”.

From Nick Kroll:

It’s about the beautiful nightmare that is puberty and adolescence. The show is based on me and my childhood best friend Andrew Goldberg’s real lives in middle school. It premieres on @netflix September 29th. I cannot wait for people to see it! Cast includes: me, @johnmulaney @jennyslate #jessiklein #jasonmantzoukas @sordociego (Fred Armisen) #mayarudolph @jordanpeele and many more amazingly talented folks.

Watch these teasers and you’ll see exactly what Kroll is saying.

Big Mouth starts streaming on Netflix on Friday, September 29th.

If you’ve been missing Childrens Hospital, you’ve got something to look forward to this week.

Brian Huskey, Jason Mantzoukas, Rob Corddry, Nick Kroll, Jon Daly, Steve Agee, and Jesse Falcon all teamed up to make a live action kid’s show that takes Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood and makes it go on a really bad drug trip of sorts. Many of them last worked together on the award winning Adult Swim dark comedy Childrens Hospital making this project one you might want to check out.

Here’s a promo for Mr. Neighbor’s House. It premieres on Friday, December 2nd at midnight and goes for a full half hour as opposed to 15 minutes.

Two ex’s that are addicted to sex try not having sex with each other while reconnecting in IFC Films’ Sleeping With Other People.

Jason Sudeikis and Alison Brie push as close to the edges of the “will they/won’t they” paradigm, that exists in all romantic comedies, as they possibly can.

A supporting cast of Jason Mantzoukas, Amanda Peet, and Natasha Lyonne seems like thy offer some pretty great comic relief from the thick, thick sexual tension as well.

Watch the trailer here, then look for it in theaters on 9/11.

Underground Casino Comedy “The House” Will Have Will Ferrell, Amy Poehler, and Jason Mantzoukas

Hopefully, this will have echoes of Old School.

In “The House”, Will Ferrell and Amy Poehler play a couple that try to win back their daughter’s college tuition via an off-the-books casino. You wouldn’t be surprised to know that Jason Mantzoukas’ character has a lot to do with suggesting that idea.

So far, this has all the makings of the comedies of yesteryear that made Ferrell into the household name he is today. We can’t wait to see a trailer to see if that holds true.

Where many networks are going lax on their comedy, Adult Swim is apparently more than happy to pick up the slack.

-a new series from China, IL’s Brad Neely called “TV Sucks”
-another Brett Gelman “Dinner with…” special
–Robot Chicken DC Comics Special III: Friendship Is Magic

-a special for Jon Glaser’s Neon Joe, Werewolf Hunter
-Pilots from/with Paul Scheer, Million Dollar Extreme, Brian Huskey, Jason Mantzoukas, a Mexican border amusement park, Seth Green, Matt Senreich, Daniel Weidenfeld, DJ Douggpound, Bento Box, a children’s show hosted by a person that has rage issues, Rob Corddry, an upstart terrorist organization, and more.

We hope we get to see all of this very soon.

So, Last Call With Carson Daly Has Been Profiling Comedy Folks For Awhile Now

When it comes to various comedy folks being featured on late night, the likes of Conan, Letterman, Ferguson, Fallon, Kimmel, and more are all usually mentioned. Last Call with Carson Daly is usually not brought up because, frankly, it was, for awhile, hard to find user-friendly clips to watch that were updated frequently after they aired on TV.

Well, it turns out that is the case no longer as many of the great profiles/clips/interviews on Last Call are now on Hulu. Megan Amram, Jason Mantzoukas, Ken Marino, and Who Charted? with Howard Kremer and Kulap Vilaysack are just a few of the people that they’ve interviewed at various nicely decorated places in LA.

This year alone, they’ve also done nice profiles of:
Jim Jefferies
Sara Schaefer
Annie Lederman
Jerrod Carmichael
Fahim Anwar
Ted Melfi
Wyatt Cenac
Jason Schwartzman and Alex Ross Perry
Tone Bell
Nick Youssef
Eliza Coupe and Michaela Watkins
Mike Lawrence

Perhaps, Playing House will fare a little better NBC’s Best Friends Forever.
