The Comedy Bureau Field Report Ep. 151: Joel Mandelkorn & The Re-Rebirth of Hot Tub

February 15, 2023
News, The Comedy Bureau Field Report
hot tub with kurt and kristen, la comedy, midnight

One of our favorite guests/people/minds in comedy, Joel Mandelkorn, returns as has one of LA’s biggest comedy shows, Hot Tub with Kurt Kristen, the show he has co-produced for almost a decade here in LA. Joel fills us in, as part of the “new normal” we live in, on moving the show from its historic time of 8PM on Mondays (it had that time in NYC for all the years that it ran there as well) to Wednesdays, being permanently outside, and his thoughts on Angelenos being properly prepared for any wintry conditions.

Also, “hot” takes on the return of @midnight, Tina & Amy’s four city tour, and more.

Follow Joel @cleftclips and follow Hot Tub with @hottub_show across socials.

CBS Looking to Replace Late Late Show with Rebooted Version of @midnight with Stephen Colbert as EP

February 7, 2023
News
late late show, midnight

(via Deadline)

Rather than find someone else from the UK to take over their 12:30AM slot, CBS is looking into following up Stephen Colbert’s Late Show with, surprise surprise, a reboot of a popular series from years ago. This one will supposedly be the Comedy Central hit @midnight where three comedians went head-to-head to see who was the funniest (or best at word play) in satirizing the Internet that day. Chris Hardwick hosted hundreds and hundreds of episodes of @midnight as well as making one of Twitter’s most popular hashtags #hashtagwars in the original series run.

Other than that Hardwick won’t really be involved in this iteration, should it get a greenlight, and that Colbert himself will EP this reboot, there are no other details of what this iteration of @midnight will be or who might host it or what sort of contestants will play. It would spell the end of decades of The Late Late Show and would make NBC the only network with two late night talk shows back-to-back. Overall, it follows the trend of TV shrinking due to cutthroat write-offs and cancellations in order to balance the books/budget/etc.

What this will mean or how it will affect the late night landscape and comedy-at-large has yet to be seen, but don’t be surprised if @midnight comes back and ends up saving Twitter from losing users if they choose to do #HashtagWars like they used to.

Often, what happens at midnight at UCB is some of the most intriguing, rewarding experiments.

We have a hunch that this live presentation and panel discussion from Cait Raft about Bradley Cooper’s remake of A Star Is Born in an ALTERNATE REALITY where 9/11 never happened might just be one such show. Certainly, they have a great line-up to pull off this stunt including Birthday Boys’ Mike Mitchell and Drew Spears.

It’s definitely a case of “this is so crazy, it just might work”.

So, get ready to stay out late this Saturday and go get your tickets here.

It looks like the time for the Trepany House at Steve Allen Theater is actually coming to an end, and, with it, The Tomorrow Show with Ron Lynch (an LA comedy institution as far as we’re concerned) seems to be ending as well.

Though it has been running for over a decade every Saturday at midnight, there’s only a month’s worth of ‘Tomorrow’ left and, as such, this week’s show is a special “MASH-UP!” that gives a sampling of Crapshoot!, Five Minutes or Die!, and Hook-Up! (i.e. the various fan favorite formats of Tomorrow).

So, please make sure you see this or one of the three other Tomorrows. You can (and should) get tickets for this week’s MASH-UP! here.

Chris Hardwick and Comedy Central Agree to End @midnight at 600 Episodes

Yes, @midnight has made it to 600 episodes. In its time, it has made an indelible mark on Twitter with #HashtagWars, influenced the direction of game shows in the age of the Internet, and highlighted many great comedians by giving their very first TV appearance.

Alas, both network and host agree that the comedy game show has run its course leaving an open slot for Comedy Central up at midnight after the show’s final week on July 31st.

There isn’t any official word on what might take that slot as of yet, though we hope it’ll be a bit of departure from the pairing of The Daily Show with Trevor Noah and Jordan Klepper’s new show at 11PM and 11:30PM.

Doug Benson Comes Out on Top in @midnight 2017 Tournament of Champions

In many ways, it would seem as if Doug Benson was made for @midnight. Excelling at quick wordplay and riffing on the Internet has lead to him being one of the go-to competitors for the show and, for 2017, the @midnight champ. Take note that @midnight has been on the air for over 3 years, meaning that they have a deep, deep pool to pull from for this now annual contest.

Benson won this week in the final round of The Tournament of Champions over at Moshe Kasher and Milana Vayntrub.

Paul F. Tompkins has been the only other @midnight Tournament of Champions winner.

‘@midnight with Chris Hardwick’ Renewed Through 2017

For now, @midnight will also stay at 11:30PM.

The show that Chris Hardwick hosts the most will now continue for another 40 weeks in a season 4 cycle going through 2017.

What we’re excited to see come out of this is the potential for more experimentation a la that week where Anthony Atamanuik as Donald Trump “sponsored” the show.

Comedy Central is leaving it open as to whether they’ll go back to airing at midnight or 11:30PM. In either case, as this year has shown, the show should be fine.

There are so many Emmy categories that some have to be announced on separate days in advance, especially when it comes to new categories like Multiplatform Storytelling or Social TV Experience.

These awards went to Archer and @midnight with Chris Hardwick respectively and are the signs of the Emmy Awards acknowledging the changing landscape of television.

It makes you wonder when, not if, will The Streamys and Primetime Emmys have a bunch of crossover.

In a very special hour long edition of @midnight, Anthony Atamanuik and James Adomian donned their wigs and perfect impressions of presidential candidates Donald Trump and Bernie Sanders to try, for a night, to win the Internet rather than the presidency.

From the looks of it, you could see pretty much Trump vs. Bernie is one of the best pieces of comedy to come from this year’s maelstrom of an election.

Having been on the air since 2013, comedians have battled it out with puns, one-liners, riffs, and shenanigans to win @midnight. After nearly two and a half years, the winningest competitors finally went in for a “March Madness” style tournament, appropriately held in March, to see who would be the best @midnight player of them all.

So, after a week, the brilliant Paul F. Tompkins has appropriately become the first winner of The @midnight Tournament of Champions Two Girls Won Cup Trophy. If this win means that Paul has won the Internet until further notice, we’re completely fine with that.

Watch him win the crown in the extended, uncut final round of @midnight’s Tournament of Champions.

We’re guessing that might give them a little more breathing room when it comes to censors.

While doing a special live edition of @midnight with Chris Hardwick down in SXSW, Hardwick, Doug Benson, Arden Myrin, and Chris Cubas will mark a first in late night by broadcasting the whole episode exclusively over live broadcasting app Periscope.

As Periscope will be essentially utilized as an over-the-top service in this instance, it’ll be fascinating to see what @midnight does with no traditional commercial breaks or specific time limits, etc. while all still be a TV show being broadcast live.

‘Adele Carpool Karaoke’ Record Is Milestone in New Era of Late Night

As of this post, Adele Carpool Karaoke is almost at the 70 million view mark on YouTube, which, according to Deadline, is now the new pinnacle of viral late night clips.

For decades, the format of the late night talk show had pretty much stayed the same with all the trappings of monologues, well tailored suits, desk pieces, celebrity guests, bands.

Now, in the 2010s, the tried and true format of late night is no longer tried and true. Rather than hanging out and hearing the crazy stories of famous people, viewers of late night seem to want to see something crazy actually happen on the show and perhaps only that.

James Corden took over The Late Late Show from Craig Ferguson only last year, relatively unknown in America, and has now scored a viral video that has out performed all the silly games that Jimmy Fallon, the late night leader pretty much from his start at The Tonight Show, plays with A-listers pretty much every night that he tapes an episode.

When Corden inherited The Late Late Show, there was scarcely any online presence for The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson as brief out-of-context interview clips were the only thing that would CBS would bother uploading on to YouTube. There is a reason that Corden went from pretty much zero to 70 million hits in a matter of a months.

The Internet and, more specifically, YouTube and social media, have commodified late night TV into more of a spectacle than it ever was. Remote segments, games, trips outside the studio are all things that are resonating with the current landscape of late night. Adele singing and joking around with James Corden being the most watched late night YouTube clip perfectly illustrates this change.

Such things specifically include Conan O’Brien doing any of his segments out in the wild or going abroad, Jimmy Fallon’s Lip Sync Battle, the pranks that Jimmy Kimmel hatches or his ongoing faux feud with Matt Damon, the deep segments on Last Week Tonight with John Oliver that are uploaded early Monday morning. You’ll note that you’ve probably seen all of these an almost innumerable times on your various social media feeds, both in embedded video and in .gif form.

Sure, Letterman used to throw random things off of a roof and Leno used to find dumb people out on the street who didn’t know what we’d all assume is basic common knowledge for JayWalking. However, in 2016, you don’t have to watch all of The Late Show or The Tonight Show just to get to watch those segments or bits. At any time of the day, you can watch just those specific parts, over and over and over, and nothing else.

With this being the case, many of those aforementioned late night tropes like the opening monologue of topical jokes and desk pieces are slowly fading in relevance in favor of what makes for the most viral sounding headline.

When Conan does entire special episodes where he travels to remote locations, it more resembles something that Anthony Bourdain would do rather than The Tonight Show starring Johnny Carson.

Last Week Tonight, @midnight, and now, Full Frontal with Samantha Bee all offer something also atypical of what late night has been for so very long by trading chats with celebrities for dozens more topical jokes that aren’t merely delivered while standing on stage without a video package to throw to. Their success is signs of the winds of change at 11PM onwards.

With all of that being said, the old guard late night talk show is, for now, still in tact. Stephen Colbert is, in a surprising turn from The Colbert Report, presenting a very high brow, well executed version of the traditional late night talk show. In fact, Colbert pulls off many feats as a late night talk show host, especially when it comes to who he books and how he interviews or interacts with who he books, that his competition cannot because they’re off focusing on all the things mentioned above. Whether he can ascend to the top of the mountain of late night like his predecessor David Letterman did and stay there has yet to be seen, but Colbert definitely has the brilliance to do so.

Oh yeah, because of Trevor Noah, Larry Wilmore, and Samantha Bee, there is finally more than one late night show right now not hosted by a white guy.

Though they’re inevitably some doubters and skeptics, all these new trends are probably for the best. When it’s easier to watch live TV and stream content on the Internet on the same device (and that’s probably pretty soon), know that late night is only going to get more shaken up.
