Pick of the Day: 9th Annual High and Mighty: Thanksgiving Eve Power Hour! (in LA) 11/22

November 6, 2023
News
dynasty typewriter, high and mighty, improv, jon gabrus, thanksgiving

Halloween is done and dusted and we’re on to the thick of the holiday season with Thanksgiving approaching fast. That actually means a lot of things for comedy, but one of the main things is Jon Gabrus’ annual High and Mighty: Thanksgiving Eve Power Hour, a true blue hour of 6 friends doing 60 shots of beer each and then letting the most hysterical Turkey Day ridiculousness unravels on stage.

This 2023 edition will be the 9th year that Gabrus and company endeavor on downing a lot of brew in just an hour’s time and will be doing so in the lovely walls of Dynasty Typewriter on Wed. Nov. 22nd at 7:30PM. It’s such a rip roaring good time that a livestream will be available as well (7:30PM PT/10:30PM ET). In-person tickets for Jon Gabrus’ annual High and Mighty: Thanksgiving Eve Power Hour are $20 and live-stream are $15 and you can (and should) go start in on the holiday gift buying by snagging a pair here.

Pick of the Day: Joe Kwaczala Album Release (in LA) 9/28

September 26, 2023
News
comedy album, dynasty typewriter, joe kwaczala, los angeles comedy

With his prolific output of sketches at a single given time (31 for 31 and 21 for 21) and Joe’s simultaneous balancing that with his ever-so-clever stand-up, you’d think that he’d have a few albums under his belt.

If that’s what you’re thinking, then you’d be genuinely surprised to know that his very first album, the aptly named, Funny Songs & Sketches, is just about to come out. Kwaczala is having a very special night this Thur. Sept. 28th at 7:30PM at Dynasty Typewriter to celebrate the release that will very likely be every bit as magical as when we first saw Joe do The Wheel Show at Nerdmelt Showroom, a sketch variety show whose fate was decided by the spin of a wheel.

Tickets for Joe’s album release are $20 a pop and you better get them here soon as Thurs. 9/28 is coming up real quick.

Pick of the Day: Luke Null: Live Special Taping (in LA) 10/2

September 14, 2023
News
dynasty typewriter, los angeles comedy, luke null, musical comedy

For all the well earned misgivings that come with musical comedy, especially the kind done with a guitar, Luke Null is a bright and shining exception. He subverts the songwriting form in a subtle, but masterfully comedic way and has penned and sung some of the best comedy songs we’ve heard in recent memory. Innovative, poignant, and devastatingly satirical, Null makes up (and then some) for so much hackneyed guitar comedy that you’ve very likely been subjected to over the last several years.

With that in mind, you really need to be at his taping to see and laugh at and tap your toe with on Mon. Oct. 2nd at Dynasty Typewriter. There are two tapings, 7:30PM & 10PM, and you can (and very much should) get tickets at $20 here and here respectively.

Pick of the Day: Superego: Forgotten Classics (in LA w/Livestream) 8/24

August 7, 2023
News
dynasty typewriter, improv, los angeles comedy, paul f tompkins, superego

When it comes to watching improv live on stage, there should be no question when it comes to catching one of the most renowned troupes/groups/improv podcasts around, Superego. Comprised of improv superstars Jeremy Carter, Matt Gourley, Mark McConville, Paul F. Tompkins, and James Bladon, they beautifully relish their own special brand of tasteful chaos.

It has been quite some time, even pre-pandemic since we’ve been all graced with their improv majesty, but the time for their return is nigh. Not only will be they taking the Dynasty Typewriter stage once again, but they’ll be improvising their version of James Joyce’s Ulysses, one of the most revered pieces of literature that’s also considered by many to be one of the most dense and confounding literary works of all time.

Thus, it should be one hell of a night of comedy to remember on Thurs. Aug. 24th at 7;30PM. Tickets are $20 right now and there’s a livestream option available for $15. Do not waste time in snagging your tickets right now here.

Pick of the Day: Bad Behavior (in LA) 8/16

August 4, 2023
News
bad behavior, blair peyton, dynasty typewriter, live podcast, los angeles comedy, sterling mulbry

NYC’s Sterling Mulbry and Blair Peyton have carved quite a specific niche with issuing judgment to comedians stories where they are, shall we say, not quite the hero with their wickedly delightful podcast, Bad Behavior.

It’s especially fun when Sterling and Blair get to dish out their verdict live and in-person, which they’ve been doing in NYC. Later this month, Bad Behavior makes its way to the LA comedy scene for a special night at Dynasty Typewriter.

They’ll be adjudicating the moral scruples of Mary Beth Barone, Natasha Leggero, Dylan Adler, and Alyssa Limperis on Wed. Aug. 16th at 7:30PM. It should be beyond a devilish good time and you won’t even have to personally get in touch with your own personal demons.

Tickets are on sale for $20 a pop and you really ought to go get them here.

Pick of the Day: Free Screening of “Strange Man Bicycle Caper” In Celebration of Pee Wee (in LA) 8/5

August 2, 2023
News
dynasty typewriter, la comedy, pee-wee herman

With millions still mourning the loss of one dear Paul Reubens, there are all sorts of tributes honoring his memory, especially when it comes to Pee Wee Herman.

So, with that in mind, we hear that the good folks down at Dynasty Typewriter are doing a special free screening of “Strange Man Bicycle Caper” this Sat. Aug. 5th at 10PM. Is that a certain famous movie about trying to find some sort of two wheel dedicated mode of transporation or not? You’d have to (and probably should) go see for yourself.

There is an RSVP, but admission is still first come, first served. No matter if you make it in or not, you should ready a red bow tie, just in case.

Pick of the Day: Murderfist (in LA) 9/23

July 18, 2023
News
dynasty typewriter, la comedy, murderfist, sketch comedy

One score ago, a rag tag crew of FSU students banded together to take their college party hijinks and antics and honed it into the no holds barred comedy sketch lore gifted to us mere mortals by those that shall be known as Murderfist.

Yes, John Moreno, Walter Replogle, Holden McNeely, Henry Zebrowski, Jackie Zebrowski, Amber Nelson, Ed Larson, Jared Warner, Kelan Maloney and Adam Wirtz together made something of the most absurd, satirical, hard hitting sketch comedy that has ever been under the moniker of Murderfist. You can watch their stuff of legend here and read an oral history of their exploits (albeit from 10 years ago) from Paste Magazine here.

The group is coming upon 20 years since their creation and the venerable members of Murderfist, all individually successful in their own right, are reuniting once more for what should be a show for the comedy history books. Come Sat. Sept. 23rd at 10PM, Murderfist will take over one of LA comedy’s classiest venues, Dynasty Typewriter, with their hysterically dark comedy (perhaps, some of the darkest in all of sketch comedy?).

Tickets are only $20 for such a momentous event and you really better snag tickets now right here.

Pick of the Day: Robin Tran (in LA) 6/16

June 13, 2023
News
dynasty typewriter, los angeles, robin tran, stand up comedy

If you’re in and around LA or NYC comedy, you ought to know that one of the trade-offs to seeing your favorite comedians perform night in and night out, often at no cost to you, is that you don’t get to seem them do longer, extended, or even headlining sets.

Suffice it to say, that you should get to see more of Robin Tran than just morsels of 10-15 minutes at a time. Tran’s brilliant satirical humor about trans and Asian-American identity as well as the general absurdity she’s surrounded by everyday has made her stand out in the LA comedy scene for years now, deserving of a stage that will give her the canvas of an hour to deliver her jokes.

Fortunately, for us all, Robin will be headlining Dynasty Typewriter this Fri. at 10:30PM and it’s something you truly shouldn’t miss. Tickets are $20 and you better get them here before they sell out.

Pick of the Day: WGA Strike/Entertainment Community Fund Comedy Benefits (in LA & NYC)

May 16, 2023
News
dynasty typewriter, entertainment community fund, los angeles comedy, new york comedy, planet showbiz, ucb, wga strike, writer's strike

All signs point towards the Writers’ Strike lasting for quite some time. Don’t be surprised if this one goes as long as the last one (more than a couple months) or even longer.

As such, more support will be needed for many TV/movie writers who primary source of income will be on, shall we say, on hiatus for quite some time. Many a comedy writer is affected in this strike and, thankfully, there are plenty of benefits for the Entertainment Community Fund that will be supporting said comedy writers and writers of all ilks coming up.

Three in mind have caught our attention between LA and NYC.

On Wed. 5/17 at 8:30PM, UCB Franklin in LA will have writers from the likes of A.P. Bio, Ted Lasso, Never Have I Ever, The Sex Lives of College Girls, Loot, and New Girl do an improvised writers room. Cast includes Beth Appel, Phil Augusta Jackson, Kassia Miller, Zeke Nicholson, Mike O’Brien, Lamar Woods. All profits go to Entertainment Community Fund. Tickets are $15.

For Tues. 5/23 at 8:30PM ET, Planet Showbiz in NYC will be putting on a special showcase of Tonight Show writers bringing you their best jokes with all proceeds goin to the Entertainment Community Fund. More specficially Mike Drucker, Martin Urbano, Kylie Brakeman, Becky Krause, Brooks Allison, Zahid Dewji, and Mike Hanford are all on the bill.  Tickets are $15.

Later this month, the cast and writers of dark horse reality/game show secret Jury Duty will be assembling to do a blend of stand-up and improv for the Entertainment Community Fund. That includes Susan Berger, David Brown, Kirk Fox, Marcos Gonzalez, Pramode Kumar, Brandon Loeser, Sheedz Olayiwola, Kerry O’Neill, Ben Seaward, and Ron Song all coming to Dynasty Typewriter in LA on Fri. May 26th @ 10:03PM PT. Tickets are once more $15.

Also, on 5/26, will be a stellar showcase of fantastic NYC comics who pay their bills as TV writers including Emmy Blontick, Karen Chee, Cole Escola, Larry Owens, Jes Tom, and Jeff Wright as well as music from Japanese Breakfast’s Michelle Zauner. Called Writers… On Stage?! No Way, it’s set for 7:30PM and tickets are $25.

Pick of the Day: Jaddy Live! with Brett Gelman (in LA) 5/8

April 24, 2023
News
brett gelman, dynasty typewriter, experimental comedy, los angeles comedy

Before taking on breakout roles in Fleabag and Stranger Things, Brett Gelman engaged in and pulled off some of the most exciting comedy that you’d ever see live in person (shout out to any and all who attended Gelmania).

Gelman has become a beloved actor both for live action and animation since then, but it has been years since we’ve seen Brett electrify a crowd with whatever complex, often voice-modulated bit he has been cooking up. Finally, that time is coming to an end as Brett Gelman has a very special evening booked at Dynasty Typewriter next month on Mon. May 8th, Jaddy Live!, where he’ll embark, once more, on a wild comedic odyssey (along with special guest Ari Dayan).

Go get your tickets for $20 a pop here to have what will likely be one of the most significant Monday nights in your life.

Pick of the Day: The Addie Show (Featuring Special Guest: The Audience) (in LA) 3/24

March 16, 2023
News
addie weyrich, dynasty typewriter, los angeles comedy

When it comes to outside-of-the-box, interactive bits, where you may or may not learn Karate or other useful skills, one need not look further than the comedic wares of Addie Weyrich. Weyrich has carved out a niche for herself through doing such things as a martial arts routine versus her phone in the morning, playing Ted Cruz waking up from a coma, and doing storytelling while doing an impromptu giveaway of her old clothes and sundries.

Thus, you’re not going to miss out on Addie’s very special show where the audience is the special guest, the aptly names The Addie Show (Featuring Special Guest: The Audience).

Weyrich is summing up all of her comedic acumen, powers, charm, and unabashed desire to have fun and then wrangling any and all in attendance to be part of the show as much as possible. According to various promotional posts, the first 150 audience members will be given special envelopes upon entrance and (at the very least) 10 folks will learn Karate.

$20 for a ticket to this sounds like more than bargain if you ask us.

The Addie Show (Featuring Special Guest: The Audience) is set for Fri. Mar. 24th at 10:30PM at Dynasty Typewriter in LA. You really ought to go get your tickets quick for what might be one of the most memorable experiences you have in 2023 because, after all, you’d be the special guest.

Pick of the Day: Maybe This Is Something? A Workout Show w/ Your Pal, Aparna (in LA) 3/13

February 20, 2023
News
aparna nancherla, dynasty typewriter, los angeles comedy, stand up comedy

Long, long ago, Aparna Nancherla made her home here in LA and the LA comedy scene was all the better for having her intelligent and sensitive comedy on a regular basis. Then, she got hired on Totally Biased with W. Kamau Bell and had to move to NYC and has made her mark throughout the city ever since then. In fact, Aparna still has one of the best “having your New York moment” stories/bits that we’ve heard.

Well, Angelenos, you’ll be happy to hear, as of 2023, that Aparna has returned to the City of Angels and we’ll be treating the scene to her beloved whipsmart humor more than a few times a year.

You can actually catch Aparna work out her new hour (and welcome her back) at Dynasty Typewriter on Mon. Mar. 13th at 7PM. Tickets are only $15 and you better go get ’em here.

Pick of the Day: Scary Little Krampus (in LA) 12/16

December 2, 2022
News
dani colucci, dynasty typewriter, holiday comedy, krampus, los angeles comedy

Whatever your flavor of holiday “cheer” is, there is a comedy show to go right along with it. Case in point, if you’re more into the, shall we say, Nightmare-Before-Christmas-side-of-things, you would be thrilled with Dani Colucci‘s spooky Christmas variety show where she hosts as the demon known to folklore as Krampus. Dani’s get up as Krampus is actually one of the best Krampus costumes we’ve ever seen as well as one of the best costumes we’ve seen at a live show (it’s at the same level as those famed Masked Singer costumes).

With or without the visage of Krampus, Dani always curates a splendid variety show (including her other shows Everybody’s Weird and Cult Potential) and this upcoming hysterical and eerie winter wonderland of a show should be no different.

Scary Little Krampus is set for Fri. Dec. 16th at 10PM. Tickets are $20. Go get them here.

Pick of the Day: Thanks But No Thanksgiving (in LA) 11/11

November 1, 2022
News
brian bahe, dash turner, dynasty typewriter, los angeles comedy, native american heritage month, tai leclaire

November 1st marks the beginning of Native American Heritage Month and, as such, you best not forget about the rest of history outside of the first Thanksgiving involving the Indigenous Peoples of North America and all the folks that came over on boats, claiming they “discovered” this place.

One of the ways you could honor this month is going to Dash Turner, Brian Bahe, and Tai Leclaire’s perfectly coined Native American comedy variety show, Thanks But No Thanksgiving, coming to Dynasty Typewriter next Fri. on Nov. 11th at 10PM PT. There will be all sorts of wonderful native stand-up, sketch/characters, and even some games (which will probably be as fun as it’ll be educational about Native American Heritage Month).

Tickets are $20 right now, you better go get’em here.

Pick of the Day: Too Soon: Comedy After 9/11 Screening (in LA) 9/11

Even though it’s a rather new addition to the comedy documentary genre, Too Soon: Comedy After 9/11 is one of the best examinations on the art form of comedy. Following the progression of healing with the country as correlated with jokes about one of the most horrific attacks on U.S. soil ever is enthralling and should be watched by any and all, no matter what your interest level in comedy is.

Lucky for you, there will be a special screening in LA on this year’s anniversary of 9/11 on Sun. at 7PM at Dynasty Typewriter with special performances by comedians featured in the doc including Jeff Ross, Laurie Kilmartin, Ahmed Ahmed and Rory Albanese and a Q&A with directors Julie Seabaugh and Nick Scown.

Tickets are $20 and you really ought to go get them here.

Pick of the Day: Danny Jolles Films His Second Comedy Special (in LA) 6/4

May 31, 2022
News
danny jolles, dynasty typewriter, live taping, los angeles comedy, stand up comedy

It was a rarity, but there were really great comedy specials that came out during the thick of the pandemic. One of those specials was Danny Jolles’ 6 Parts. It wasn’t only us that was saying that. Both Paste Magazine and The New York Times picked it as one of their favorite specials last year.

So, with that in mind, we don’t think you will want to miss Jolles and Don’t Tell Comedy doing another hour special this weekend on Sat. Jun. 4th. This time, Danny will be getting to sharing his wonderfully crafted comedy offerings to us all on a proper stage, the grand Dynasty Typewriter (as opposed to a surf shop, art store, etc.).

There will be an early and late show, at 7PM PT & 9:30PM, and tickets are going for $15 right now. Go get them ASAP here and here, respectively.

If it is pure silliness you seek as a salve and an escape from the constantly mutating terror of our waking reality these days, one should look no further than the sketch duo of Joe McAdam and Chris Stephens, better known as BUTT.

Their ridiculousness is so often transcendent in such a hysterical way and has their absence due to the pandemic has left a void in our soul. Just thinking about their Yoda dating app sketch keeps us going many days that we’re particularly down.

It’s just fortunate for us all that Joe and Chris and their butts are returning to Dynasty Typewriter come next Fri. May 27th at 7:30PM PT with special guests Eddie Pepitone and Steph Tolev. It should be an undeniably rambunctious night of comedy that will make you forget, above all else, people are trying to distract themselves from the world by watching a horridly messy celebrity defamation trial.

Pick of the Day: The George Lucas Talk Show (in LA) 6/3

March 24, 2022
News
connor ratliff, dynasty typewriter, george lucas talk show, griffin newman, la comedy, patrick cotnoir

Since it endures through the pandemic as a virtual show on top of it already being a beloved live show in-person for several years before COVID-19 was even a thought, The George Lucas Talk Show should be commended for its resilience, agility, and longevity as well as being thoroughly enjoyed as one of the most humorous curiosities to come in the last 15 years or so.

Connor Ratliff as George Lucas joined by Griffin Newman’s Watto and producer Patrick Cotnoir are actually going to be doing The George Lucas Talk Show live and in-person, once more, in LA, a rare occurrence even without a pandemic. If you’re not anywhere near Dynasty Typewriter, you’ll be happy to know that they’ll also be live-streaming the show as well, which should be pretty swell getting to see/hear it with a live crowd.

This very special live, LA edition (the last one was probably in 2017 or 2018 at UCB Sunset?) of The George Lucas Talk Show is set for Jun. 3rd at Dynasty Typewriter at 8PM PT (streams 8PM PT/11PM ET). Go grab your tickets for $20 right now ($15 for live-stream) here.

Pick of the Day: Chris Redd: Why Am I Like This? (in LA) 2/15

February 2, 2022
News
chris redd, dynasty typewriter, los angeles comedy, snl, stand up comedy

Throughout every season of Saturday Night Live, there are bye weeks that allows the cast and writers to, well, do whatever they want. Sometimes, they take some well earned rest, but many of them choose to go back to the things that brought them to the institution that is SNL in the first place.

Thus will be the case when SNL’s Chris Redd returns to LA and headlines Dynasty Typewriter this month with his vibrant and colorful observational stand-up comedy. Redd had been making his way in LA right before he got cast a few years ago (or over a decade ago if you feel like the pre-pandemic times were a very long time ago) and you’ll have a small window here to see him live.

Redd is set for a special evening of stand-up comedy that he’s calling Why Am I Like This? on Tues. Feb. 15th at 8PM PT, thankfully saving us from any residual, forced schmaltz of Valentine’s Day.

Tickets are $25 and you can (and should) go get them here.

Pick of the Day: Maria (Bamford) in the Morning (in LA) 1/29

News
dynasty typewriter, los angeles comedy, maria bamford, stand up comedy

If you’ve been going out to stand-up shows recently, you might have noticed that one and only, almost magical Maria Bamford has been popping up here and there. Throughout so much of this time, Maria has been a graceful presence that has not only kept her legendary comedy chops, but shepherded so many of us through the darkest times since 2020 (and probably even longer than that).

So, as always, any chance to see Maria, especially when she’s headlining, should not be missed, come hell, high water, COVID, etc. etc. There will be a chance to see Bamford headline Dynasty Typewriter near MacArthur Park bright and early this Saturday at 11AM PT, which, we’d bet, is the best way to start your weekend.

Tickets are only $10 right now and you best snag them while you still can.

Pick of the Day: Russell Howard (in LA) 4/8 & 4/9

December 22, 2021
News
dynasty typewriter, los angeles comedy, russell howard, stand up comedy

International superstar touring UK comedian Russell Howard was actually slated to do a whole run of shows in LA at Dynasty Typewriter in spring 2020. You know that didn’t happen and we all headed indoors to explore what virtual comedy was like.

With the Omicron variant sparking several closures of public gatherings and indoor events across the world for, at least, the rest of the year, one can only look to further in the future for an assured (probably) return, once more, to indoor comedy shows at proper venues.

So, Howard rescheduled the show far, far in advance in 2022 to get ahead, at the time, of anything might happen with the ever evolving pandemic (like the Omicron variant of COVID-19). He has four shows lined-up for Friday Apr. 8th and Saturday Apr. 9th both at 8PM PT & 10PM PT. We’re not the betting types, but we’re pretty sure that these shows will happen and the high energy, sharply funny, and positive energy of Howard is something you could probably use right now.

Go buy tickets at $25 a pop for Howard’s late shows on those dates since the early shows have already sold out.

Pick of the Day: The Jesse Miller Talk Show (in LA) 12/11

News
andre hyland, dynasty typewriter, jesse miller talk show, los angeles comedy, mitra jouhari, noel wells, talk show

To this very day, Andre Hyland‘s creation, The Jesse Miller Talk Show, remains as one of the craziest and best talk shows we’ve ever seen (that includes any of the ones on TV all the way to ones that happen in someone’s apartment).

For the unfamiliar, The Jesse Miller Talk Show puts one Jesse Miller at the monster truck driver’s seat of his very own talk show that blends the outrageous energy of self-proclaimed media mogul that you might find outside of many 7-11s in LA that celebrities may have frequented with a seemingly unlimited capacity for pop culture knowledge and wordplay. Also, there’s heavy guitar shredding from Darryl (Paul Oyen) and plenty of PDA with his sidekick/boo Tanya (Anna Lee Lawson).

In short, it’s a good time and we’re glad to see that it’ll be going back up, in-person, on this side of the pandemic at Dynasty Typewriter on Sat. Dec. 11th at 10PM PT. So far, Jesse will be putting his dazzling interview tricks on display for Noël Wells, Mitra Jouhari, and a special surprise guest.

Tickets are $15 right now, so you best go snatch them up right now.

Daniel Simonsen only comes through LA only every so often, but you shouldn’t miss one of the most original and unique voices in comedy right now whenever you can see it. Not only is Simonsen’s actual physical voice unique as he hails from Norway, but the angles in which Daniel takes to approach his comedy are also singular to him in such thoroughly funny way. There’s something so starkly dry and atypical about his delivery and cadence and that’s just skimming the surface of why and how he’s so damn funny.

Daniel is set to headline Dynasty Typewriter this week on Thurs. Oct. 7th at 8PM. Tickets are $20 right now and $25 on the day of (proof of vaccination required). Go get your tickets right now.

Pick of the Day: The Crossword Show with Zach Sherwin (in LA) Wednesdays in October

Even though it has been years since we’ve starting going and marveling at The Crossword Show with Zach Sherwin and its wizardry with words, it’s still remains as one of the most amazing feats of verbal gymnastics that we’ve ever seen in our whole tenure at TCB.

For the uninitiated, Sherwin has excellent comedians on a panel try to solve a very, very fun crossword on stage (along with the audience) and then offers truly mind-bending explanations for the answers and connections to other answers/hints. It’s one of the most enjoyable rides down a rabbit hole that we’ve had at a live show.

Sherwin is gearing up for four editions of The Crossword Show at Dynasty Typewriter this coming October on Wednesdays (10/6, 10/13, 10/20, & 10/27 all at 7:30PM PT). Tickets are $20 in advance and $25 on the day of (proof of vaccination required). Please go get your tickets right now right here.
