Pick of the Day: How to Start a Fire with Sydnee Washington (in NYC) 9/20

September 6, 2023
News
nyc comedy, solo show, storytelling, Sydnee Washington, union hall

Though Sydnee Washington has indeed returned to NYC, she is far from a prodigal daughter. It was wondrous having her comedic spirit in and around LA for her limited stint, but, alas, her heart is in New York and is at home.

To mark her momentous homecoming, Sydnee is putting up her fantastic solo show, How To Start a Fire, once again at Union Hall. For the uninitiated, yes, the title is literal (and a little metaphorical as well) and a damn great collection of stories from Sydnee’s early years leading up to the eponymous event.

Welcome Sydnee back to NYC and please enjoy/re-enjoy this solo show on Wed. Sept. 20th at 10PM. Tickets are $18.98 and you can and should go get ’em here.

Pick of the Day: Must Love Dogs and Comedy (in LA) 8/18

August 17, 2022
News
danielle perez, jolie dudley, los angeles comedy, mateen stewart, must love dogs, robby hoffman, stand up, Sydnee Washington, theresa bateman

Both live comedy and one’s dog bring a very concentrated dose of joy on their own. Together, potentially, they could make for an evening that will leave you smiling bigger than you ever imagined you might smile (so long as the pooches don’t bark at the comics?).

Must Love Dogs and Comedy, a dog friendly show based out of NYC, is giving Angelenos a chance at having their pups with them in addition to a stellar line-up of the LA comedy scene’s finest (as well as raise money for the Annenberg PetSpace Emergency Vet Fund).

This Thurs. Aug. 18th, host/creator Jolie Dudley will take over the Wallis Annenberg PetSpace at 6PM PT (doors at 5:30PM PT) with the likes of Danielle Perez, Mateen Stewart, Robby Hoffman, Sydnee Washington, and Theresa Bateman.

Not only is your dog welcome, but their will be free treats from JustFoodForDogs (as well as libations for humans too)

Tickets start at $25 and you can (and should) go get them here.

Pick of the Day: Big Wig with Caleb Hearon and Brian Robert Jones (in LA) 8/24

August 15, 2022
News
beth stelling, brian robert jones, Caleb Hearon, dtla, illuminati hotties, los angeles comedy, Mae Martin, Sydnee Washington

Caleb Hearon and Brian Robert Jones have gotten more than a few months under their belts of putting on one of the hands down, most fun, truly expansive variety shows (they did a live tattoo on stage of a more than willing audience member on top of stand-up and a handful of beautiful music acts) with Big Wig.

This month, they’re really upping the ante in their new DTLA/Arts District secret location with an absolutely stellar comedy line-up of Beth Stelling, Sydnee Washington, and Mae Martin, but they’re also bringing Illuminati Hotties, a damn good punk band that really feels like it actually holds on to a punk ethos in a world increasingly devoid of it, to their stage

So, you’re never going to want to miss any sort of Big Wig, but you definitely want to make extra sure that you’re not going to miss this one on Wed. Aug. 24th at 9PM PT. Tickets are $17 and you better snag them here.

Pick of the Day: Big Rox (in LA) Tuesdays Starting 5/31

May 19, 2022
News
addie weyrich, cameron esposito, christine medrano, dana donnelly, free show, jared goldstein, los angeles comedy, milan patel, stand up comedy, Sydnee Washington

Comedy in LA has gotten to a point now where there’s a bevy of weekly comedy shows for you to catch every night of the week. Well, almost every night of the week has that, save for Tuesday. If Roast Battle isn’t your speed (and you don’t want to pay for cover, parking, and 2 drink min.), you might want something else.

Well, cue in Big Rox, a brand spanking new weekly FREE stand-up show from an amazing LA based trio of Addie Weyrich, Dana Donnelly, and Christine Medrano on the Eastside at the lovely restaurant aptly named, Jewel.

They’ll be taking on the mantle of the free weekly stand-up show you should be catching on Tuesdays and will be kicking off their run on May 31st at 7:30PM PT (doors 7PM PT). Their inaugural line-up including Cameron Esposito, Sydnee Washington, Jared Goldstein, and Milan Patel is a pretty perfect for a first show.

So, set a weekly reminder to go to Jewel, a jewel in the hidden jewel of a neighborhood, Rampart Village.

Pick of the Day: How to Start a Fire from Sydnee Washington (in NYC) 8/14

July 30, 2021
News
nyc comedy, solo show, Sydnee Washington

Fresh off being named one of the New Faces of Comedy by the Just For Laughs Festival, it’s more imperative than it already was to go watch Sydnee Washington whenever and wherever she plays (you ought to know that Comedy at the Knitting Factory on Sundays is the place to be in Brooklyn). Sydnee’s panache and vulnerability in her comedy together truly demand your attention and why she is a fast rising star right now.

Sydnee has just started in on a solo show, How to Start a Fire, that follows a very specific thread of her childhood that lead to “an infamous fire that could have ruined her family” (as opposed to that one in Manchester By the Sea). The first performance of it sold out almost instantly and, thusly, you should snag tickets to her latest date for How to Start a Fire set for Sat. Aug. 14th at 10PM ET.

Tickets are $15 and you can (and very, very much should) go get them here.

Grindr Enters Into Comedy Special Arena with “Gag Reflex”

April 2, 2021
News
grindr, jay jurden, joel kim booster, Sydnee Washington

(via THR)

Though original comedy specials haven’t been released during this time like they used to be, it doesn’t change the fact that streaming services and premium cable networks alike we’re trying their hand at producing some sort of comedy special. Netflix, HBO, Amazon, EPIX, etc. have been plenty busy over the years, which has led to more comedy specials coming from places that you might not expect (Facebook Watch even dipped their toe into this awhile ago with Chris Fleming’s Showpig).

The latest entry comes from a very unlike place, Grindr, in such an unlikely time of the pandemic. Their very first live-stream special, Gag Reflex, features the queer comedy stylings of Joel Kim Booster, Sydnee Washington, Jaye McBride, Zach Zimmerman, and Jay Jurden. Due to the pandemic, it had to be done, as most comedy has been done over the last year, virtually. Still, it does mark a step forward for Grindr as a brand instead of just a gay dating app that usually is relegated in comedy to how promiscuous its users usually are.

Also, kudos to them for picking quite the line-up.

It’s hard to say whether other dating apps will start making similar content or if other brands will enter the comedy space, but we wouldn’t be surprised to see more of such a thing happen as the comedy space is going to be flooded with comedians wanting their time in the spotlight when things get far to the safe side of the pandemic.

In the meantime, you can watch Gag Reflex at your convenience, without Grindr, on YouTube here.

Pick of the Day: Syd Can Cook Anniversary 3/20

March 18, 2021
News
marie faustin, syd can cook, Sydnee Washington

The anniversary of lockdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic is not something that’s really all that much to celebrate or be happy about.

However, the anniversary of Sydnee Washington’s wondrous comedy cooking/panel show, Syd Can Cook, is indeed something to actually excited for. Since the beginning of lockdown, Sydnee has dove into uncharted waters by broadcasting her cooking in her apartment as someone who was not an expert chef and allowed an esteemed panel of the funniest people she knows help/roast her during the whole process.

Normally, the show would stream on IG Live, but this particular edition is getting a nice upgrade by live-streaming from Streamyard. The Syd Can Cook Anniversary is going to be a primetime event (on Sat. Mar. 20th at 4PM PT/7PM ET) with a primetime line-up that includes co-host Marie Faustin and Rachel Sennott, Laci Mosely, Dulce Sloan, Dee Nasty, Devon Walker, Naomi McPherson, and Delina Medhin.

Tickets are $5 and you can (and very much should) go get them here.

January 27, 2021
News
pick of the day, syd can cook, Sydnee Washington

Sydnee Washington is gracing us with another special edition of her IG Live cooking/panel show, Syd Can Cook this Sunday. They haven’t been weekly in awhile, so you best savor them whenever you can.

Not only will there be a whole bunch of special guests giving Sydnee the business while she cooks so much food up at once, but it will be her birthday where she will be “…turning 35 again.” Karolena Theresa will be by Sydnee’s side to serve up the full Syd Can Cook experience. It’s absolutely what you should be looking forward to this Sunday as another week in quarantine passes.

Syd Can Cook: The Birthday Show will be popping off on IG Live @justsydbw at 4PM PT/7PM ET, Sun. Jan. 31st.

Pick of the Day: Dynasty Confidential for KTown For All 2/2

January 22, 2021
News
dynasty typewriter, jes tom, joel kim booster, josh sharp, ktown for all, megan gailey, mitra jouhari, Sydnee Washington

Now that 2021 has REALLY begun, transparency is going to be crucial if we are to actually “form a more perfect union”. In other words, let’s not keep so many secrets.

That makes Dynasty Confidential with Joel Kim Booster a perfect show for this time as Joel will virtually assemble some of comedy’s best to divulge their secrets, and then do with them as he pleases. Also, you’ll get to bear witness to whole the thing for what is a hilarious evening of revelations.

This particular edition of Dynasty Confidential will go to benefit the amazing org Ktown For All that advocates for the unhoused population in and around LA.

So, plan for Tues. Feb. 2nd at 6PM PT/9PM ET to live-stream Dynasty Confidential after you go get your tickets here.

We told you that there would be plenty of big time comedy benefit shows for the Georgia Runoffs and, lordy lordy, there sure are. This latest one is being put up by the one and only Padma Lakshmi that’s very explicit in this regard by being called, “Padma Puts on a Virtual Comedy Show for the Georgia Runoff Elections: An Evening to Benefit FairFight”.

Stacey Abrams’ FairFight was instrumental in registering voters and contributing to Biden’s 2020 Election win and will undoubtedly be crucial in the upcoming special Georgia Senate Runoffs.

So, they tapped Padma for a live benefit show and she, in turn, got one hell of a line-up that includes:

Hasan Minhaj, Phoebe Robinson, Sarah Silverman, Chelsea Peretti, Kumail Nanjiani, Emily V. Gordon, Benito Skinner, Mike Birbiglia, John Early, Roy Wood Jr., Julio Torres, Michelle Buteau, Patton Oswalt, Aparna Nancherla, Caleb Hearon, Wanda Sykes, Joel Kim Booster, Tituss Burgess, Meg Stalter, Patti Harrison, Nikki Glaser, Ayo Edebiri, Jo Firestone, Amber Ruffin, Dulce Sloan, Naomi Ekperigin, W. Lastly, the evening’s virtual festivities will be hosted by none other than the Las Culturistas themselves, Matt Rogers and Bowen Yang.

Reads like a festival line-up, doesn’t it? Well, we still can’t do that in person right now, but you can enjoy this gigantic Padma Puts on a Virtual Comedy Show comedy live-stream on Thurs. Dec. 17th at 6PM PT/9PM ET at youtube.com/padmalakshmi and donate to FairFight here.

Pick of the Day: Syd Can Cook Holiday Extravaganza 12/20

December 10, 2020
News
comedy livestream, cooking show, syd can cook, Sydnee Washington

Many comedy livestreams have come and gone in 2020. The same goes for comedians attempting to cook during a livestream for humorous effect. Yet, one of the standout shows in this arena that have stood the test of COVID-19 time (i.e. what’s time anymore?) is Sydnee Washington’s Syd Can Cook, which is half comedy green room hang/half cooking show/whole “a real good time” that gets us through a bit more of this year.

For the holidays, Sydnee is doing a very special marathon version of Syd Can Cook on Dec. 20th at 4PM PT/7PM ET at @justsydbw on Instagram. You know that she’ll be going strong on IG Live w/Karolena Theresa through her holiday feast no matter what folks are putting up in the thread and there will be a grand virtual procession of special guests the whole way through.

Per Sydnee herself, “PLEASE SUGGEST WHAT YALL WANT TO SEE US MESS UP, I MEAN COOK” @justsydbw.

aparna nancherla, donwill, eugene mirman, halloween, jo firestone, maeve higgins, marcella arguello, Sydnee Washington

You may not get to do trick-or-treating or endless party-hopping, but you can tune in what might be the perfect comedy thing for this Halloween season. They describe it as:

Pick of the Day: Cabernet Cabaret with Catherine Cohen 8/12

August 10, 2020
News
blair socci, cabernet cabaret, catherine cohen, Chris Murphy, Meg Stalter, palehound, Sydnee Washington

At the outset of quarantine, one of the instant live-stream hits was Cabernet Cabaret with Catherine Cohen. Her transition of her subversively whimsical weekly comedy variety show to an IG Live show was successful with a weekly audience that dwarfed the actual live-in person crowd at Club Cumming.

Cohen took a hiatus for her show over the last several weeks as the current cultural uprising took hold across the world. Now, she’s back this week and has shifted Cabernet Cabaret to YouTube. She still has another stellar line-up of Meg Stalter, Chris Murphy, Sydnee Washington, and Blair Socci, with music from Palehound for any and all in virtual attendance this Wed., Aug. 12th 5PM PT/8PM ET.

Tickets for the return of Cabernet Cabaret are $5-$10 and profits will go to supporting the performers and the show as well as the Marsha P. Johnson Institute. Go get them here.
