TCB Debriefing 11/6/23: Rufat Agayev, Catherine Cohen, The Bear, Peaches, James Corden

November 6, 2023
News
catherine cohen, don't tell comedy, emma corrin, james corden sirius, lucie zhang, peaches, rufat agayev, stand up comedy, the bear

1. One would think that, as artists, comedians would have a vast and colorful imagination, but, alas, there are plenty of examples of comedians simply “painting by numbers”. Rufat Agayev is a very refreshing break from the rote examinations of everyday life with pondering our common human ancestry and better uses for the “one chip challenge” and delivering it with authority (comedically undercut with brazen goofiness). All of this is on display in his Don’t Tell set that just dropped today. Please enjoy it here.

2. Come for Catherine Cohen and her Come for Me U.S. tour coming all over the nation starting next year. Maybe get a whole posse to come all at the same time? Tickets at catherine-cohen.com/tour.

3. The Bear is renewed for its 3rd season and we still haven’t figured out whether it’s a comedy or not (even though it’s rightfully one of television’s most acclaimed series).

4. Emma Corrin is taking a massive departure from her previous work by embarking on a dark comedy where she plays a scamming gold-digger who, along with French star Lucie Zhang, gets scammed herself. It’s a trio of international firsts as it will be Hong Kong writer/director Jenny Suen‘s first English language film, Emma Corrin‘s first comedy with top billing, and Hollywood icon Cate Blanchett’s first comedy as a producer (Deadline).

5. James Corden will be returning to interviewing celebrities, but not on TV. Instead, he’ll be doing a SiriusXM show called This Life of Mine with James Corden (USA Today). Guess Conan O’Brien has blazed the trail for post late night life in doing podcasts/radio?

6. We’ll leave you with this: Both John Oliver and Matt Rife are guests on The Tonight Show this Wednesday and, for what it’s worth, we actually would have loved to see this pairing on The Late Late Show with James Corden because both of them would have to share a couch and, presumably, roast each other?

Pick of the Day: Stamptown (in LA) 11/30

November 3, 2022
News
bonavega, catherine cohen, chad damiani, christina catherine martinez, Dylan Adler, los angeles comedy, Mae Martin, natalie palamides, stamptown, zach zucker

Returning victoriously from Europe, Zach Zucker and Stamptown his traveling, rotating circus of clowns, stand-ups, characters, out there musical acts, and more is coming around to LA once more. The last time Stamptown was in town was six months ago back when Netflix Is a Joke Fest finally happened, which, honestly feels like two years ago at this point.

Per usual, Zucker has gone above and beyond to stack the line-up with the most daring and illuminating acts in town, which will include (so far for this 11/30 edition):

Mae Martin
Catherine Cohen
Natalie Palamides
Dylan Adler
Bonavega
Chad Damiani
Christina Catherine Martinez

It’s at the nice and big and raucous Bourbon Room in the heart of Hollywood on Hollywood Blvd. (perhaps one of the only reasons to go there?) and tickets are only $20 right now. Go get ’em while you still can here.

Catherine Cohen: The Twist… ? She’s Gorgeous, The Special, Is Only a Week Away

News

Catherine Cohen has been such a maven of her particular brand of high gloss, yet vulnerable cabaret/musical comedy for so long that she has built a die-hard following that has packed out both Club Cumming as well as IG Live when she had to live-stream her main stay show, Cabernet Cabaret. That being the case, an hour special has been a long time coming and that, in of itself, is a twist for all the years passing until now when this special, The Twist… ? She’s Gorgeous is debuting on Netflix.

Cohen put this very first hour up at the hallowed NYC comedy staple, Joe’s Pub, which we’re thrilled that Netflix subscribers (and friends w/Netflix passwords) will get to see just in case they haven’t seen its intimate majesty.

There’s only a week and change before we get to see Cohen in one of her shiniest get-ups to do her debut hour one-woman comedy special. For now, you can pass the time with a taste of what’s to come with the official trailer for Catherine Cohen: The Twist… ? She’s Gorgeous here before the Mar. 15th premiere.

Pick of the Day: Cabernet Cabaret with Catherine Cohen (in NY) Wednesdays

News
cabernet cabaret, catherine cohen, club cumming, ny comedy

Once more, the indie comedy shows in LA and NYC are making their way back and so too are their loyal audiences who so loved packing in from wall to wall to watch of either city’s vast treasure chest of comedy.

Cabernet Cabaret, an institution for alt comedy in NYC, has been back in full force on Wednesdays at 8PM ET at its home Club Cumming with its loving mother Catherine Cohen for weeks now, going up for sold out crowds. Actually, there are several weeks of the show that are already sold out stretching out all the way to mid-August. So, you best set a reminder to check Cohen’s socials @catccohen on IG and @catcohen on Twitter or the calendar at Club Cumming regularly so you can get a ticket to a fantastic edition of Cabernet Cabaret in the not so distant future.

Pick of the Day: Seek Treatment Live! A Valentine’s Day Post Mortem 2/19

February 16, 2021
News
catherine cohen, pat regan, seek treatmentt

Now that the devastation of Valentine’s Day is over, it might be a good time to heal with you’re in a relationship in quarantine or you’ve been going this whole time of lockdown all alone.

So, the perfect thing, along those lines, my being a special live-stream edition of the amazing dating/relationship/love podcast Seek Treatment marvelously hosted by comedians Catherine Cohen and Pat Regan. In fact, they are doing a Valentine’s Day Post Mortem episode to soothe our souls with some lovely, lovely banter and dissecting the aftermath of this past Sunday.

Seek Treatment LIVE: A Valentine’s Day Post Mortem will stream this Fri. Feb. 19th at 5PM PT/8PM ET on YouTube via Dynasty Typewriter. Go get tickets (they’re only $10) and access/here.

Pick of the Day: Cabernet Cabaret with Catherine Cohen 8/12

At the outset of quarantine, one of the instant live-stream hits was Cabernet Cabaret with Catherine Cohen. Her transition of her subversively whimsical weekly comedy variety show to an IG Live show was successful with a weekly audience that dwarfed the actual live-in person crowd at Club Cumming.

Cohen took a hiatus for her show over the last several weeks as the current cultural uprising took hold across the world. Now, she’s back this week and has shifted Cabernet Cabaret to YouTube. She still has another stellar line-up of Meg Stalter, Chris Murphy, Sydnee Washington, and Blair Socci, with music from Palehound for any and all in virtual attendance this Wed., Aug. 12th 5PM PT/8PM ET.

Tickets for the return of Cabernet Cabaret are $5-$10 and profits will go to supporting the performers and the show as well as the Marsha P. Johnson Institute. Go get them here.

Pick of the Day: Dynasty Confidential 5/29

News
amy zimmer, bryan yang, catherine cohen, joel kim booster, karen chee, marie faustin

The mighty Dynasty Typewriter is expanding their live-streamed offering and have got it a very special show with Dynasty Confidential coming this Friday. The close and personal secrets of comedians will be revealed to Joel Kim Booster and then, he’ll do with it whatever he pleases.

Hearing secrets is already enough for a show, but giving free reign for Joel Kim Booster to do something with those potentially damning words will be so much damn fun. Those brave enough to be on this line-up are Catherine Cohen, Amy Zimmer, Bryan Yang, Marie Faustin, and Karen Chee (this special NYC line-up would dazzle even if they were just doing stand-up, FYI).

Dynasty Confidential is set to stream this Fri. May 29th 6PM PT/9PM ET. Tickets are $8.68 and you can and should go get them here (they’ll send you a Zoom link w/purchase of tickets).

Handy Dandy Guide to Weekly/Daily Comedy Livestreams (While We’re All Hunkered Down))

Though it was for a terrible reason, the world of comedy has pretty much pivoted on a dime (with growing pains to be sure) into a cornucopia of live-streaming through several online platforms. Two weeks into a good majority of the major comedy hubs of LA and NYC being sheltered in home, there have already been a whole row of weekly and even daily livestreams featuring your favorite comedians and comedy folks. Best of all, you don’t have to live in LA or NYC or really anywhere to see these. Many are free or for donations and can be seen so long as your WiFi is solid. Also, that means many of the best comedians around the country will be showing up on all sorts of shows as they just have to join in on Instagram Live, Twitch, Zoom, etc.

For the time being, these livestream shows have set up shop and will be here every week or most days of the week to keep you from going entirely insane while being stuck at home. Take note that there are plenty of one-off special events that are happening as well not mentioned here. Check our listings frequently for when and where those shows will be happening.

Obviously, we’ll update this post the more that we find.

Comedy Quarantine-daily stand-up show, Monday-Friday at 7pm PST/10PM on Instagram Live @comedyquarantine, hosted by Barbara Gray and Teresa Lee, donations accepted for comedians and COVID-19 relief.

Eddie Pepitone: Live From the Bunker-live rants and guest interviews from Eddie Pepitone, Monday-Friday, 4PM PST/7PM EST on Instagram Live @eddiepep, free.

Hot Tub with Kurt and Kristen (Home Edition)-same great weekly stand-up show with Kurt Braunohler and Kristen Schaal on Mondays at 8PM PST/11PM PST at http://holdthephone.tv/, donations accepted for comedians and COVID-19 relief.

New Material Show with Maria Bamford-Maria Bamford works out 1/2 hour of new material Monday-Friday 3PM PST/6PM EST on Zoom, donate $5 or more to food bank or Venmo $1 to @maroo-bamfoo.

Not only is Pop-Up Magazine a super neat concept that combines so many creative disciplines into one amazing live show, this will be a chance for you to see both the absolutely hysterical Catherine Cohen and Jo Firestone in LA.

So, you get both of them, which could be a great bill on its own, plus a live score and so much more. If this sounds pretty swell to you, tickets are $39-$49 (but you can knock off $5 w/code LIVESTORIES). Go get those tickets here.

Last night, Catherine Cohen got to show the world what many comedy circles around the country have gotten to enjoy for a few years now. Cohen performed one of her songs from her solo show, accompanied by Henry Koperski on piano, and showed off her wonderfully sarcastic panache and, of course, her voice as well.

So, please enjoy this lovely debut of Catherine Cohen on Seth Meyers here.

The comedic forces of Patti Harrison, Mitra Jouhari, and Catherine Cohen are assembling once more for their show known as It’s A Guy Thing, happening this time at The Bootleg on Thurs., May 9th at 7:30PM.

On their own, you shouldn’t miss their experimental, absurdist, dark, musical-forward comedy and certainly shouldn’t miss it when they’re together (i.e. this will probably sell out soon).

Tickets are $10. Go get ‘em here.
