Pick of the Day: Morality with Jo Firestone (in NYC) 9/24

September 9, 2022
News
brooklyn, jo firestone, ny comedy, stand up comedy

Throughout the last few years, you’ve seen Jo Firestone branch into a truly brilliant comedy multi-hyphenate. From being perfectly cast in Joe Pera Talks With You to stoking the fires at Ziwe to teaching old folks stand-up comedy in what might be the most adorable comedy special of all time, Good Timing, Jo has been quite busy with so many great things.

That said, getting to see Jo take the stage for a whole night of just herself hasn’t happened in a minute and one ought to know from listening to her album The Hits that Jo headlining is funny on a transformative level.

So, with all of that in mind, do not miss Jo headline The Bell House in Brooklyn this month, Sat. Sept. 24th at 7PM. Tickets for what will be called Morality with Jo Firestone are $15 and you better go snag them here right now.

Pick of the Day: Josh Gondelman: What’s New? (in NYC) 7/31

July 22, 2022
News
brooklyn, josh gondelman, ny comedy, stand up comedy, union hall

For all that is said about how gritty NYC is and how much hustle and grinding goes in on NYC comedy specifically, Josh Gondelman is living proof that you can be one of comedy’s nicest folks and also be one of the funniest people throughout all of NYC (and beyond).

Gondelman has not only killed it on so many stages around the scene with his sweet demeanor, but has written for so many of the best shows on TV including Last Week Tonight and Desus & Mero. Come Sun. Jul. 31st at 8PM ET at Union Hall, you can watch him, up close and personal, work on brand new jokes along with other grand NYC comedy staples Hari Kondabolu, Ophira Eisenberg, and Mohanad Elshieky.

Tickets are only $12 right now and you can (and should) go get them here.

Pick of the Day: NY Laughs @ Little Island (in NYC) 6/16

June 14, 2022
News
gina yashere, joyelle johnson, kenice mobley, LeClerc Andre, little island, ny comedy, ny laughs, stand up comedy

Though, technically, Summer doesn’t officially start until a week from now, it definitely feels like it’s here (thanks to climate change?). That definitely means there’s plenty of outdoor happenings that you can (and should) attend, especially in places that have seasons that aren’t LA.

For NYC, the season for live events at the man made treasure Little Island (near Chelsea/Meat Packing District) is subsequently upon as well and they’ve got big comedy show to help kick off this round of programming. NYLaughs, a wonderful org putting up free comedy shows all around the city, is putting up Gina Yashere, Kenice Mobley, LeClerc Andre, and Joyelle Johnson this Thurs. Jun. 16th at 9:30PM ET at Little Island.

That’s the sort of line-up you’d normally have to pay a 2 drink minimum for while packed in tight as possible in a dark, cramped room. Instead, you can watch this completely for free while pretty much standing on the Hudson.

Pick of the Day: Tim Platt Presents a Night of Wedding Speeches (in NYC) 6/3

May 26, 2022
News
alise morales, brooklyn, danny groh, eudora peterson, Ike Ufomadu, Joe Castle Baker, Karolena Theresa, ny comedy, peter mills weiss, sarah wilson, tim platt, union hall

Wedding season is upon us and, despite everything, we’re pretty sure that most folks that put their wedding on hold because of COVID-19 are now getting hitched this year (even though COVID-19 hasn’t been eradicated).

As such, you shouldn’t miss the show dedicated to one of the major cornerstones of any wedding, the speeches. The endlessly imaginative Tim Platt started putting together a very special evening of wedding speeches delivered to a comedy couple by a bunch of comedians, sometimes in character and sometimes not, and it’s more fun than nearly every wedding we’ve ever been witness to.

Tim’s latest edition of A Night of Wedding Speeches will be happening at Brooklyn Comedy Collective on Fri. Jun. 3rd at 8:30PM ET with an astounding wedding party of Joe Castle Baker, Eudora Peterson, Ike Ufomadu, Sarah Wilson, Karolena Theresa, Peter Mills Weiss, real life married comedy couple Alise Morales & Danny Groh, and, of course, Best Man Tim Platt.

Tickets are only $15 and you really ought to snag your tickets/save the date here.

Pick of the Day: GAYME SHOW! (in NYC) 6/12 & 7/22

May 9, 2022
News
bell house, brooklyn, dave mizzoni, game show, gayme show, matt rogers, ny comedy

It has been a long and winding road, though it absolutely shouldn’t be, for one of the absolutely, most delightful, hysterical comedy game shows around, GAYME SHOW! Before lockdown, they were ascending as they should be how fun hosts Dave Mizzoni and Matt Rogers made testing the extent, if any, of straight men’s queer knowledge and sensibilities. They got ordered to series, which they deserved, but it unfortunately happened at the now defunct Quibi (though you can and should watch it now for FREE on the Roku Channel).

Thankfully, both Dave and Matt have made it to this side of the pandemic as stellar as ever and are bringing back the classic, in-person experience of GAYME SHOW! to NYC at The Bell House. They’ve got two dates lined-up, Sun. Jun. 12th & Sat Jul. 22nd at 8PM ET. Though they don’t have the line-up yet, you really better buy your tickets up fast because they will absolutely sell out. Get tickets here and here respectively for $30 a pop.

Pick of the Day: Weirdo Night (in NYC) 4/21

March 21, 2022
News
ana fabrega, experimental comedy, haggs, holland andrews, illustrious pearl, ny comedy, performance art, viva ruiz

Dynasty Handbag has been the ringleader of a wonderful, bizarre entity known as Weirdo Night for several years all in and around LA. The fringe variety showcase has been a refreshing oasis if you’re the sort of person that is looking for something truly different than the traditional forms of stand-up, sketch, and improv (not that there are anything wrong with those).

Next month, Dynasty Handbag is bringing Weirdo Night to spread some strange delight to NYC, specifically the Bell House in Brooklyn. From all corners of performance, the likes of Holland Andrews, Ana Fabrega, HAGGS, The Illustrious Pearl, Sarah Squirm, and Viva Ruiz will assemble to make this a beautifully off-kilter night to remember.

This special NYC edition of Weirdo Night is set for Thurs. Apr. 21st at 8PM ET and we bet it’ll sell out. Go get your tickets for $25 right now.

Pick of the Day: 69 Filthy Minutes with Steph Tolev (in NYC) 3/10

March 4, 2022
News
asylum nyc, ny comedy, sketch comedy, stand up comedy, steph tolev

If you’re in and around LA comedy at all, it should be no mystery or surprise to you that Steph Tolev is one of the funniest people in the scene. Her brash, bold, and yet very vulnerable comedy that’s delightfully accented by Steph’s one-of-a-kind voice has been such a joy to Los Angeles for years now and we’ll never forget that she is very likely the only comedian that had a show done for her where dozens of her favorite comics in town did an impersonation of her in tribute.

So, NYC is going to get their own bit of Steph next week as she’ll be doing a very special evening of sketch and stand-up at Asylum NYC on Thurs. Mar. 10th at 7:30PM ET. Very specifically she’ll be doing a special 69 minutes that Steph would like it to be very clear that it’s “not PG” (in case the “69” didn’t make it clear).

Tickets are $18.81 (including fees) and you can (and very much should) go get them here.

Pick of the Day: Nore Davis’ 5th Stand-Up Album Recording (in NYC) 1/29

December 21, 2021
News
album recording, brooklyn, live taping, nore davis, ny comedy, stand up comedy, union hall

If there was ever an uplifting voice of comfort in comedy that also kept it completely honest and vulnerable and, most importantly, so very hysterically funny, there would be a very tiny short list with the name Nore Davis clearly on it.

For the dozens of times we’ve seen him live and all the hours/specials/albums we’ve heard/seen, Nore has been a constant in offering a rare hopeful outlook threaded through his deftly crafted material and undeniable charm and finesse on stage. His comedic artistry even shined through on Zoom, the rare feat during this time of COVID-19, and he made a thoroughly enjoyable album via Zoom.

So, that said, you shouldn’t miss his latest album recording (it’ll be his fifth one) at Union Hall on Sat. Jan. 29th at 7:30PM ET & 10PM ET when, one can only hope, the current Omicron surge will have subsided. Get tickets for $20 here.

Pick of the Day: The Jackie and Laurie Show LIVE (in NYC) 1/16

December 1, 2021
News
bell house, jackie kashian, laurie kilmartin, live podcast, ny comedy

At this point, The Jackie & Laurie Show is a comedy institution for how insight it gives into every facet of comedy throughout the decades and the present through the lens of two of best comedians working today, Jackie Kashian and Laurie Kilmartin. Also, their friendship through the pod is one of the most dynamic and entertaining we’ve listened to (no matter how chippy it might get).

So, any live edition of the pod that always features Jackie, Laurie, and some splendid handpicked comedians is a must see and NYC is going to get a round of Jackie & Laurie at the top of 2022. That’s right, come Sun. Jan. 16th at 7:30PM ET, Kashian and Kilmartin will take to Brooklyn’s hallowed comedy stage, The Bell House.

That might seem like a ways away, but don’t waste time in getting tickets now, which also would make for a great holiday gift. They’re going for $20 right and you can (and very, very much should) go get them here.

Pick of the Day: Sad Sacks (in NYC) 12/1

November 18, 2021
News
anthony devito, casey james salengo, chris gethard, doug smith, ny comedy, solo show

With the exposure of solo shows from the UK and Australia and the ever changing DNA of comedy specials these days, we hope that you’ve expanded your consideration of what constitutes an hour of comedy these days. Certainly, in America, it can be quite difficult to develop such material as there has been historical expectation at comedy shows of cut and dried jokes, honed or raw. The inclination towards vulnerability in comedy, even though that was Richard Pryor’s bread and butter, has only really become a trend over the last decade.

With that in mind, it’s important to have space for such genre bending, more emotionally deep works of comedy that fall into that age old label of “solo show”. Thus, Sad Sacks @ Caveat in NYC’s LES is born. Celebrated and seasoned comedians Chris Gethard, Casey James Salengo, Anthony Devito, and Doug Smith all have their solo shows that they’re working on and will be performing excerpts of it together at this very special showcase. It’ll be a comedy show that has the whole range of emotional color that, we’d argue, makes for a much more enriching experience.

So, do not miss out getting tickets for Sad Sacks on Wed. Dec. 1st at 7PM ET. They’re $15 and you can go get them here.

Pick of the Day: Thanks But No Thanksgiving (in NYC) 11/20

November 11, 2021
News
BIPOC, comedy show, indigenous, native american, ny comedy, thanksgiving, union hall

We sincerely hope that, at this point in time, especially with all the reckoning that we all were supposed to be going through with racism in America, that you know the history behind Thanksgiving isn’t the idyllic picture that you were very likely shown when you were a kid.

That said, there’s a comedy show coming up that’s being put up by all Native American comedians on Lenape land at Union Hall. Brian Bahe, Dash Turner, Tai Leclaire will put on this non-Thanksgiving holiday variety show that will still be a great time, but free of any whitewashed American Turkey Day make-em-ups.

Thanks But Not Thanksgiving: A Native American Variety Show is set for Sat. Nov. 20th at 7:30PM ET at Union Hall. Tickets are $10, $12 on the day of.

Also, the event says “One free horse per audience member.” You should go for a lot of reasons, but one of those reasons should definitely be to find out if you actually get a horse of some kind.

Get tickets here now.

Pick of the Day: Butterboy 4 Year Anniversary (in NYC) 11/15

November 4, 2021
News
aparna nancherla, jo firestone, littlefield, maeve higgins, ny comedy

The Monday night 8PM slot at Littlefield in Brooklyn has been a historic one and stewarding it is to be an beloved anchor for the NYC comedy scene. Eons ago, seemingly, it was Hot Tub with Kurt and Kristen on Mondays at Littlefield, then it was Night Train with Wyatt Cenac, and, for the last four years, it has been Aparna Nancherla, Jo Firestone, and Maeve Higgins as the smashing trio behind Butterboy.

The NY Comedy Festival is indeed next week and that edition of Butterboy will be part of the festival, but the week after, on Mon. Nov. 15th, Aparna, Jo, Maeve, and their DJ Donwill are going to mark the fourth year of doing Butterboy and making sure NYC comedy has the perfect panacea for any sort case of the Mondays.

Already, they’ve got Joe Pera, fresh off the season premiere of Joe Pera Talks With You, Joyelle Nicole Johnson, fresh from her on The Tonight Show, and Lili Michelle, who just finished her run of one of the best and longest running outdoor shows throughout the pandemic, Peaches & Cream. Undoubtedly, there will be some great surprises TBA.

So, you ought to snag your tickets quick for this one. Yes, they are still $10 right now.

Pick of the Day: Girl God with Grace Freud & April Clark Encore Show (in NYC) 11/7

November 2, 2021
News
brooklyn, brooklyn comedy collective, Grace Freud, ny comedy

We were originally going to make Grace Freud and April Clark’s album taping for Girl God at Union Hall our pick of the day, but that sold out so quick that there was not really much to do in telling you about it.

Luckily, there’s an encore show that will have some lovely, absurdist bells and whistles in the form of ridiculous powerpoint presentations, bonkers games, and more (in addition to some wondrous, hysterical stand-up). Freud and Clark, AKA Girl God, have lined up this encore show for this Sun., Nov. 7th at 7PM ET at the Brooklyn Comedy Collective.

We have a feeling this is probably going to sell out too, so, find $10 and go get your tickets right this very second here. 21+, proof of vaccination required.

Pick of the Day: Yosterbation (in NYC) 10/28-12/16

October 26, 2021
News
brooklyn, caroline yost, Dylan Adler, edy modia, hannah pilkes, ikechukhu ufomadu, Joe Castle Baker, Karolena Theresa, kate willett, ny comedy, rachel kaly, sabrina wu, solo show

Seeing someone develop an hour or a solo show can be one of the more rewarding things in the live comedy going experience. The ephemeral nature of newly forged jokes, bits, pieces, etc. for an hour of comedy solo on stage gives a certain urgency that can often be electric (and it’s often what we hope to see when we’re watching comedy these days).

Also, on the other hand, it’s pretty great seeing really funny people do shows live and in-person. Whichever school of thought you want to fall in line with, you definitely should catch Caroline Yost of the amazing NYC comedy group Ladies Who Ranch develop a solo show in the very hip, very hidden Life World in Gowanus in Brooklyn. Yost is such an absurdly fun force to watch on stage and it’s definitely worth you going to any one of the six shows she has lined-up starting this week.

Schedule and special guests are as follows:

10/28-Kate Willett, Joe Castle-Baker, Rachel Kaly
11/4-Karolena Theresa, Ikechukhu Ufomadu, Dylan Adler
11/18-Hannah Pilkes, Sabrina Wu, Edy Modica
12/2-a special split bill show with Sarah Wilson
12/9-TBA
12/16-TBA

All shows are at 8PM ET (doors 7:30PM ET) and tickets are only $11 (proof of vaccination required). Go RSVP and snag your tickets here.

Pick of the Day: Kwaczala-Palooza (in NYC) 10/25

October 21, 2021
News
brad evans, clare o'kane, irene morales, Jeremy Levick, kenice mobley, nick ciarelli, ny comedy, Rajat Suresh, tommy mcnamara

In the worlds of stand-up and sketch (and Rock N Roll Hall of Fame podcasts), Joe Kwaczala is favorite staple of the LA comedy scene for his sharply crafted and often collaborative absurdity (especially in his video short series that he’s done over the years, 31 for 31 and 21 for 21. His bringing that ingenious silliness to NYC next week at the one and only Union Hall along with many of NYC’s best that are artisans of the comedic arts themselves.

Called Kwaczala-Palooza (perhaps there will be a game with how many times fast you can say that?), Joe will be gathering the comedy stylings of:

Nick Ciarelli & Brad Evans

Tommy McNamara

Kenice Mobley

Irene Morales

Clare O’Kane

Jeremy Levick & Rajat Suresh

That’ll all go down in Brooklyn at Union Hall on Mon. Oct. 25th at 10PM ET and tickets are only $10. If you’re not going to our anniversary show in LA on 10/25 because you’re in NYC, you really ought to go to Kwaczala-Palooza.

Pick of the Day: Vulture x Union Hall: Pretty Major (Tuesdays in NYC) 9/14

August 25, 2021
News
jay jurden, live comedy, Marcia Belsky, ny comedy, stand up comedy, union hall, vulture, zach zimmerman

The importance of a stalwart, landmark weekly comedy show in a comedy scene is so vital. It acts as a linchpin  for the scene itself, a platform for deserving talent to brightly shine, and a very fun lab for the bunch that takes on the hallowed duties of hosting such an endeavor. Names such as The Meltdown, Butterboy, Comedy at the Knit, Hot Tub, and Put Your Hands Together might come to mind in this regard (feel free take a moment to get nostalgic about any and all of those shows if you were ever in attendance).

Vulture is now looking to join those ranks by embarking their very own curated weekly live comedy show Pretty Major at the revered Brooklyn stage that is Union Hall every Tuesday at 7PM ET, starting on Sept. 14th. A fantastic cadre of Marcia Belsky, Jay Jurden, and Zach Zimmerman will be presiding over as hosts and, already, we have a pretty good feeling about this.

Just look at the month of line-ups they’ve announced and you’ll know you’re in for a treat of their favorites of the best of NYC comedy.

9/14: Please Don’t Destroy, Taylor Garron, Kylie Brakeman, Sydnee Washington, Francesca D’Uva, and more!

9/21: Jaye McBride, Larry Owens, Jes Tom, Devon Walker, and more!

9/28: Catherine Cohen, Nore Davis, Fareeha Khan, Mary Neely, Martin Urbano, and more!

10/5: Zack Zucker, Spike Einbinder, Grace Kuhlenschmidt, Chris Gethard, and more!

Tickets are only $12 and you can (and really, really should) go get them here. They’ll likely sell out pretty quick.

FYI, to out of towners that Vulture’s own Jesse David Fox knows and loves:

FYI: Union Hall is handling the booking. HOWEVER, if you are an LA comedian I know and you're going to be in town or a SURPRISE DROP-IN type, please please please reach out to me. Love, Jesse https://t.co/chis8DNXkG

News
afghanistan aid, atheer yacoob, benefit show, ismael loutfi, mohanad el-sheiky, ny comedy, sarah suzuki harvard, usama siddiquee

The ongoing crisis in Afghanistan right now is undeniably horrifying to see, let alone to actually go through. So many Afghans are fleeing and only certain pockets of the country are resisting the takeover by the Taliban and, as such, one can feel existentially helpless in doing anything about the situation.

That said, there are a myriad of relief efforts to support, one of which can be done through just going to a comedy show.

This Tuesday, at one of NYC’s new favorite underground spots, SESH Comedy, will be hosting an exclusive live comedy fundraiser, Shut Up & Laugh, presented by Nervous Laughter, with an amazing line-up of many of NYC comedy’s finest to aid rescue/resettlement efforts.

On the bill:

Usama Siddiquee
Ismael Loutfi
Mohanad El-Sheiky
Atheer Yacoob
Sarah Suzuki-Harvard

The show starts at 7PM ET and tickets are only $10. So, go get them right here and let’s sell this thing out for a great cause (and, also, have a damn good comedy show).

Pick of the Day: Eddie Pepitone (in NYC) 10/4

We have oft praised Eddie Pepitone for his comedy mastery and reaffirmed the idea that you should go see him at any and all times. For the longest time, our shout outs of his shows were relegated to LA dates, but, since we now cover comedy in NYC, we’re thrilled to tell you that Eddie has a headlining NYC date in the not so distant future.

On Mon. Oct 4th at 7:30PM ET, Eddie will play City Winery (w/JT Habersaat featuring). The Comedy Bureau Field Report Ep. 73: Mikala Knezevich & Working the Comedy Matrix

ny comedy, ny comedy festival

Going from coast to coast more than once, Mikala Knezevich has built quite the reputation for producing comedy. She got the comedy bug after seeing one live comedy show and then asking for a job at the comedy club that very night and just wanted to be in and around comedy at all times. That has led her to taking on a plethora of shows in NYC, many of which are weekly. If you know the ins and outs of the production side of live comedy, which Mikala and TCB’s Jake Kroeger go into here, you ought to know that it’s such an ambitious undertaking to do one weekly show. Thus, you’ll be delightfully surprised to discover that Mikala paints as well.

August 11, 2021
News
comedy show, dulce sloan, ny comedy, shalewa sharpe, solo show

In comedy right now, one of the keenest observers and deft storytellers is Shalewa Sharpe. Her stand-up is just so precise and rich in its narrative and color that it captures the absurdities of Shalewa’s world and offers them up so delightfully to the any and all.

So, Shalewa doing a whole solo show, Don’t Reach in the Bag, about working several years at an adult video store is bound to be a riveting, hysterical, marvelously textured performance chock full of unforgettable tales of people’s voyeuristic desires. Oh, and you better bet that there’s a Q&A after the show as, undoubtedly, you’ll have questions.

Dulcé Sloan is putting up Shalewa Sharpe’s Don’t Reach in the Bag at Brooklyn Comedy Collective’s new home at Eris, next week on Sun. Aug. 22nd at 7PM ET.
