One of the best recurring collections and publications of short form humor and literature adjacent to that has been, for a quarter of a century, McSweeney’s Quarterly Concern. Authors and humorists alike including Michael Ian Black and Joyce Carol Oates have been included in its pages for two and a half decades.

To celebrate, McSweeney’s has enlisted celebrated and renowned humorist John Hodgman and The Magnetic Fields’ Stephin Merritt to mark their 25th Anniversary to be held live (and on live-stream) at Symphony Space (Peter Jay Sharp Theatre) on Wed. May 10th at 7:30PM ET/4:30PM PT.

Join in for the high brow merriment and esteemed evening of the written word (and many other art forms) starting at $32 (and $25 for live-stream). Discounts for Symphony Space members available. You can and should go get tickets here and make this Wednesday in May one of your classiest evenings that entire month.

News

Justice John Hodgman has always stood for the people where other courts, whether government sanctioned or simply on daytime television, fall short. This Summer, the Honorable Justice John Hodgman is coming to the people more than he ever has with a big live episode at NYC’s venerable Lincoln Center.

The problems that are very valid, but other lawyers and legal professionals would deem to banal for a courtroom will be heard by Hodgman and his bailiff Jesse Thorn on Wed. Jun. 29th at 8PM ET. Best of all, this show is completely FREE to attend (a true treat when it comes to being at the Lincoln Center). You can just show up or snag one of a limited amount of advance reservations.

Also, if you would like the chance to have your day in Hodgman’s court and solve that nagging problem that all your friends don’t want to hear about anymore in front of big NYC live audience, submit your claim here.

Pick of the Day: Get Your Pets with John Hodgman 5/14

Even after all this time and so many iterations of virtual comedy on so many different platforms and platforms on top of platforms as to make it seem you’re not watching comedians in their living quarters, one of the best live-streams to come from this time is, without question, Get Your Pets with John Hodgman.

Humorist/author/(hopefully) former deranged millionaire John Hodgman would indeed interview pets and not their owners/masters/parents on IG Live for an unbridled delight of a time. Dogs, cats, birds, horses, reptiles, and more would get a nice afternoon chat with Hodgman and it’s truly hard to get more charming than that.

Hodgman did this series quite a bit at the start of lockdown, but went on hiatus in order to take on the several other projects on his very full plate. Yet, Get Your Pets with John Hodgman returns this Friday at 1PM PT/4PM ET as part of Maximum Fun’s annual membership #MAXFUNDRIVE.

Do not miss a second of it @johnhodgman on IG Live.

Handy Dandy Guide to Weekly/Daily Comedy Livestreams (While We’re All Hunkered Down))

Though it was for a terrible reason, the world of comedy has pretty much pivoted on a dime (with growing pains to be sure) into a cornucopia of live-streaming through several online platforms. Two weeks into a good majority of the major comedy hubs of LA and NYC being sheltered in home, there have already been a whole row of weekly and even daily livestreams featuring your favorite comedians and comedy folks. Best of all, you don’t have to live in LA or NYC or really anywhere to see these. Many are free or for donations and can be seen so long as your WiFi is solid. Also, that means many of the best comedians around the country will be showing up on all sorts of shows as they just have to join in on Instagram Live, Twitch, Zoom, etc.

For the time being, these livestream shows have set up shop and will be here every week or most days of the week to keep you from going entirely insane while being stuck at home. Take note that there are plenty of one-off special events that are happening as well not mentioned here. Check our listings frequently for when and where those shows will be happening.

Obviously, we’ll update this post the more that we find.

Comedy Quarantine-daily stand-up show, Monday-Friday at 7pm PST/10PM on Instagram Live @comedyquarantine, hosted by Barbara Gray and Teresa Lee, donations accepted for comedians and COVID-19 relief.

Eddie Pepitone: Live From the Bunker-live rants and guest interviews from Eddie Pepitone, Monday-Friday, 4PM PST/7PM EST on Instagram Live @eddiepep, free.

Hot Tub with Kurt and Kristen (Home Edition)-same great weekly stand-up show with Kurt Braunohler and Kristen Schaal on Mondays at 8PM PST/11PM PST at http://holdthephone.tv/, donations accepted for comedians and COVID-19 relief.

New Material Show with Maria Bamford-Maria Bamford works out 1/2 hour of new material Monday-Friday 3PM PST/6PM EST on Zoom, donate $5 or more to food bank or Venmo $1 to @maroo-bamfoo.

Please Get and Enjoy John Hodgman’s Latest Book “Medallion Status”

Often, memoirs and autobiographies can seem self-aggrandizing and overly indulgent. Yet, the curious life of one John Hodgman and the charming way in which Hodgman himself examines it really makes him exempt from such a notion.

This latest book, Medallion Status, offers up another fun dive into Hodgman’s life where he’s famous, but not quite too famous and the sort of surreal experience that can be.

It’s almost like if a much less toxic (and definitely human) character on BoJack Horseman succinctly and delightfully recounted how they racked up an astonishing amount of frequent flyer miles.

Medallion Status by John Hodgman is out now and available in hardcover, Ebook, audiobook from Penguin Random House. Get it here.

John Hodgman is set to return to our coast once more, this time with a brand new book in hand, Medallion Status (release date-Oct. 15th), which follows his time in becoming one of the best contributors on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, traveling the country with a certain level of fame, and, hence the title, gaining Medallion Status as a very frequent flyer.

He’ll be on a book tour for Medallion Status and, for his LA stop, will be chatting it up with the one and only Aimee Mann at the Aratani Theatre, Thurs. Oct. 24th.

Tickets are as follows:
$50.00 Reserved Section  (includes book)*
$40.00 General Admission Section  (includes book)*
$20.00 General Admission Section (on sale Sept 24, 10am)

His honor Judge John Hodgman will presiding once again within LA county for another live episode of his eponymous MaxFun podcast, this time at The Regent Theater in DTLA on Thurs. Jun. 6th at 8PM.

-is a machine gun a robot?

It’s a pretty damn great time (even if you’re a plaintiff or defendant).

Oddly enough, the world seems closer to ending than when John Hodgman jokingly mused about it a few years ago.

That being said, you can still enjoy his writings with his latest book Vacationland that’s decidedly less apocalyptic. It follows Hodgman through a layered journey to the “most painful beaches” of Maine.

The juxtaposition of ‘painful’ and ‘beaches’ alone has us on board.

Vacationland is available for pre-order now for a release on October 24th. Hopefully, Ragnarok doesn’t become real in that time.

Seeso is wasting no time in getting the second season of live comedy showcase series Night Train with Wyatt Cenac going. The renewal announcement was made today along with the line-ups feature much of the best in NYC and around the country. The tapings are all set up all around Valentine’s Day.

What makes us most excited about this new batch of Night Train is plenty more opportunity for Wyatt to spit the fire that he did with his immediate-post-election album, One Angry Night in November (you can still get it for free here).

You can get tickets, from which the proceeds will go to charity, here.
