The Comedy Bureau Field Report Ep. 95: Ruby Karp & Actual Hope

January 19, 2022
News, The Comedy Bureau Field Report
bandera animation, chelsea handler, daniel radcliffe, gen z, greg daniels, mike judge, millenials, ruby karp, weird al yankovic

It’s one thing to think of young people as the future, but it’s a whole other thing to actually talk to them about what the prospect of the coming years has in store for them. Taking a cue from C’mon C’mon, we talk to Ruby Karp, a comedian who is both Gen Z and has had more experience in doing comedy than people in their 30s and 40s. Karp has an inspiring passion for comedy that is both captured through her own very genuine hope for the future of comedy and convinces that there is something actually better to come with 2022 onwards. It also helps that she is an unstoppably bubbly person to talk to.

Also, “hot” takes on Daniel Radcliffe as Weird Al Yankovic, the fame of Pete Davidson, Chelsea Handler’s memoir being adapted into a Peacock series, and more.

Classic MTV Animated Series Continue to Make Comeback with Revivals of Clone High and Beavis and Butt-Head

July 2, 2020
News

Possibly following the lead from the Jodie, the upcoming Daria spin-off at Comedy Central, other MTV animated properties are getting another shot, specifically Phil Lord and Chris Miller’s Clone High (via  Deadline) and Mike Judge’s Beavis and Butt-Head (via THR).

Beavis and Butt-Head is already in the works for its return at Comedy Central with series creator Mike Judge back overseeing the revival that supposedly will include specials and spin-offs. Clone High’s reboot has been announced by MTV Studios, but it has yet to find a network to call home.

Given the need for new content and animation being suddenly one of the best, safest ways to produce a TV series while quarantine continues, it’s not entirely surprising to see a new wave of nostalgia-baiting additions to development slates. Those that grew up with Clone High hold on to the series very fondly and the success of Lord and Miller (making things like The LEGO Movie be better than anyone could have possibly imagined) after that has probably made Clone High fans even more loyal. Mike Judge has also had a monumental career following Beavis and Butt-Head including Office Space, King of the Hill, Idiocracy and Silicon Valley and has expanded his fan base beyond the Beavis and Butt-Head crowd. It’s a unique situation for both series as not only is the strong pull that many millennials and even some Gen X-ers will have to at least binge a few episodes, but the curiosity of fans from all of their other work to check out these upcoming revamped versions of their early work.

How the production and release of these two series will be a curious case to watch. Animated production does take a bit of time and we do wonder how these shows will fare if there is already a vaccine in place and people just want to stay outside for awhile.

If you’re not familiar with Tales From the Tour Bus, the crazed, yet true stories of musicians get animated by Mike Judge and company. Last year, they delved into the weird and insane lives of country music’s most outlandish acts.

This year, Tales From the Tour Bus steps into the funk (and yes, that does include a story from Rick James). Get a taste of it with the season 2 trailer here.

If you want to see how wild the world of funk music can get, check it on Cinemax at 10PM tonight.

Mike Judge Presents: Tales From The Tour Bus Renewed at Cinemax for Second Season, Will Focus on Funk/R&B This Time Around

Enough folks had fun seeing animated tales of some of the wildest acts that country music ever had thanks to Mike Judge’s Tales From The Tour Bus that we will all be treated to second round.

For the second season, as mentioned above, the focus will be on the tall tales of James Brown, George Clinton, etc. If Charlie Murphy’s stories of Rick James and Prince on Chappelle’s Show serve as any indication, there ought to be one heck of a season on the way.

So, however you do, make sure you get Cinemax before season 2 arrives.

It’s more than a couple of months away, but you can start looking forward to a whole brand new season of Silicon Valley. It’ll even feel a little newer than usual as there will be a noticeable absence of one Erlich Bachman.

See what that looks like in this trailer here.

The first season of Silicon Valley premieres on Sunday, March 25th on HBO.

While rock stars and rappers have plenty wild tales of their lives going awry, those on the country music side of things also have many such stories.

Thus, Mike Judge has taken to not only sharing these stories of Waylon Jennings and Jerry Lee Lewis with the world through his new series, Mike Judge Presents: Tales From the Tour Bus, but also accompanying the stories with animation.

Get a taste of what’s to come with this teaser.

Mike Judge Presents: Tales From the Tour Bus premieres Friday, September 22nd at 10PM on Cinemax.

Both shows will be coming in 2018 and have yet another year where real events that transpire might be weirder than their plot lines.

Mike Judge Will Be Receiving a WGA Lifetime Achievement Award For Animation

Mike Judge has done so much post-animation with Idiocracy and Silicon Valley and this WGA Lifetime Achievement Award for Animation is a great reminder that Judge also brought King of the Hill and Beavis and Butthead to TV during the animation period of his career.

This is probably the first of multiple lifetime achievement awards that Judge will receive in the years to come.

IDIOCRACY’s 10 Year Anniversary To Be Celebrated with Alamo Drafthouse Screenings and Q&A with Mike Judge & Cast

It’s the 10 year anniversary of the film, but there also has never been a better time for American citizens to see this movie than now.

On October 4th, Alamo Drafthouse will be doing a special one-night only engagement screening of Mike Judge’s Idiocracy complete with a Q&A with Judge and the cast to be live streamed from the Aero Theatre in Santa Monica.

The drafthouse has theaters across the country and you can find where they are and get your tickets at the link above.

Mike Judge and Etan Cohen Are Ready to Revive “Idiocracy” in Ads to Satirize Donald Trump

Terry Crews is also on board to reprise his role as President Dwayne Elizondo Mountain Dew Herbert Camacho.

Since Donald Trump’s rise in this presidential election, plenty of people have made plenty of references to 2006′s Idiocracy from Mike Judge, who you probably now know from Silicon Valley on HBO, and Etan Cohen.

In case you forgot how much of a satirical cautionary tale that movie was, both Judge and Cohen, pending permission from Fox who owns the rights to the original movie, are ready to make new ads with President Camacho that will stick it to Donald Trump.

If they got to do it, it would be probably be another great piece of attire of this 2016 election. We just hope that it would be a bit of comedy that both those against Trump would enjoy as well as shutting up Trump supporters instead of making them dig their heels in deeper.

The highly anticipated return of something like Silicon Valley on HBO wouldn’t be complete without a high profile premiere event.

Because it’s Silicon Valley, they also can’t just throw any premiere event, which is why they pulled out a red carpet, a step and repeat, and rotating searchlights as well as have the cast and the creators gathered altogether to show a single scene from season 3 from the show.

Watch this silly event really happen here.

Once the nagging insurance salesman Ned Ryerson in Groundhog Day, Stephen Tobolowsky seems like he will be a thorn in the side of Pied Piper in the latest season of Silicon Valley as shown in this trailer.

Thomas Middleditch/Richard Hendricks goes through a bit of an early Steve Jobs phase as well.

Catch the premiere next month on Sunday, April 24th at 10PM on HBO.

It’s going to be called “TV’s Funniest Animated Stars: A Paley Center for Media Special”

Mickey Mouse to SpongeBob SquarePants to The Simpsons and several other legendary cartoon characters will be the focus of a Fox TV special put together by The Paley Center for Media. The likes of H. Jon Benjamin, Nancy Cartwright, Mike Judge, Seth Green, Pamela Adlon, Tom Kenny, Yeardley Smith, and more will chat about their various animated characters that they’ve helped put on the map.

Hopefully, they’ll do some sort of bit with some of the characters like Human Giant did all those years ago with t-shirt cannons.

Former Twitter CEO Dick Costolo Now Consults on HBO’s  Silicon Valley

Mike Judge is ensuring the satirical nature of his show Silicon Valley hits as close to home as it possibly can.

Dick Costolo, who ran in the sort of tech circles that the show sends up on every episode, now has plot and story run by him for authenticity purposes at the Silicon Valley writers’ room. In a way, it’s as almost if he’s a Neil DeGrasse Tyson for the shows portrayal of tech corporate culture.

Just like people can’t believe the source material that Another Period is actually based on, we’re sure Costolo will also bring something that shows life is stranger and probably funnier than fiction.

The sequel to Henry Phillips’ Punching The Clown has moved forward very quietly. We heard that it was going into production and then, just over two weeks ago, Phillips himself tweeted that it was “in the can”.

Punching the Clown 2 is now in the can. Look out for it next year! pic.twitter.com/joR73mq8xI

— Henry Phillips (@Henlips) November 25, 2014

So, not only do we have to look forward towards a release, perhaps, sometime next year, but, the cast for Still Punching The Clown is pretty damn great. J.K. Simmons, who you probably saw get sociopathic in Whiplash, Sarah Silverman, Jim Jefferies, Tig Notaro, Doug Stanhope, Mike Judge, Drunk History’s Derek Waters, Nikki Glaser, and more are all being featured in the film.

Hopefully, the news of a release date and the actual release date itself will come soon.

Armando Iannucci, Mike Schur, Jenji Kohan, Mike Judge, Jenni Konner, Chuck Lorre, and Marc Maron Have a Fascinating Chat

The Hollywood Reporter gathered together comedy showrunners Mike Schur from Parks and Recreation, Jenji Kohan from Orange Is The New Black, Mike Judge from SIlicon Valley, Armando Iannucci from Veep, Jenni Konner from Girls, Chuck Lorre from Two and Half Men (and so many more), and Marc Maron from Maron to chat for awhile about being a showrunner for a comedy series in 2014.

The results are pretty intriguing and enlightening. At one point, due to the modifier asking the entire group a number questions that they qualified with an exemption of Lorre’s shows, Chuck Lorre asked, “What am I doing here?”
