TCB Debriefing 1/14/24: Critics Choice Awards, AI Carlin, Get on Your Knees, Mr. & Mrs. Smith, Laurie Kilmartin, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Jenny Slate, Wes Anderson, Laid, Snowflakes, Drew Barrymore

January 14, 2024
News
ai, critics choice awards, curb your enthusiasm, donald glover, drew barrymore, george carlin, jacqueline novak, jenny slate, kelly carlin, laid, laurie kilmartin, maya erskine, mr and mrs smith, snowflakes, stephanie hsu, wes anderson

1. Barbie and The Bear win for Best Comedy, film and TV show respectively, for the Critics Choice Awards. Barbenheimer was Summer 2023 and Winter 2024 will be “The Barbear”?.

2. AI tried impersonating George Carlin for a whole hour and called it a “George Carlin special” only to offer a disclaimer that it was an impersonation. Suffice it to say, it didn’t go well (stick to original, human Carlin) and Kelly Carlin responded in “kind”.

3. Witness the poesy of fellatio in the celebrated Jacqueline Novak solo show Get On Your Knees that’s due out as a Netflix special on 1/23.

4. The Donald Glover/Maya Erskine version of Mr. & Mrs. Smith is different than the Brad and Angelina version (and definitely the Hitchcock one), but, then again, is it? (it is, it’s more grounded and they’re not such expert level spies) Take a gander at the first full-length trailer here, then look for it on Amazon Prime starting Feb. 2nd.

5. Laurie Kilmartin is coming out with her latest special, the wonderfully named Cis Woke Grief Slut on Jan. 30th, which will probably make it the first noteworthy special of 2024 (sorry Pete Davidson).

6. Here’s the trailer for season 12 of Curb Your Enthusiasm, which is supposedly the final season, but, then again, how many Cher farewell tours were there? Look for what might be the final episodes of Larry David on Curb starting Feb. 4th on Max.

7. Jenny Slate makes shorts classy as they’ve ever been in the first look of her new special Seasoned Professional. Take a gander here, then look for it on Amazon Prime on Feb. 23rd.

8. Wes Anderson already has a cast so stacked that it would be more than enough star power as is with Bill Murray, Michael Cera, and Benecio Del Toro (Deadline). Expect at least 10 more of Hollywood’s biggest stars to sign on.

9. Stephanie Hsu will be the star of Peacock’s latest comedy series, Laid, from Nahnatchka Khan and Sally Bradford McKenna (Variety). Since it’s a comedy that involves confronting the past as a result of all of her former lovers dying all of a sudden, it’s a pretty nice middle ground for Hsu between Everything Everywhere All At Once and Joy Ride.

10. Since Atlanta is over and who knows exactly when the next round of What We Do in The Shadows will be coming, you might be wondering what’s going on with comedy at FX. Cue in the Nick Kroll produced pilot from Ben Kronengold and Rebecca Shaw, Snowflakes (THR).

11. Guy Maddin, the mind behind one of the trippiest documentaries/meta pieces of art we’ve ever seen (My Winnipeg), has a G7 comedy in the works called Rumours with Cate Blanchett and Alicia Vikander already attached (Deadline).

12. Drew Barrymore is getting a fifth season of her daytime talk show (Variety). Daytime is still way more diverse than late night. Weird, isn’t it?

13. We’ll leave you with this: Maybe Jo Koy should have opened with AI written jokes to set expectations lower before launching into his Barbie joke?

TCB Debriefing 12/18/23: Ziwe/Santos, Mo Welch, Colin From Accounts, Emma Willmann

December 18, 2023
News
colin from accounts, curb your enthusiasm, dad jokes, don't tell comedy, emma willmann, fox nation, george santos, mo welch, ziwe

1. Breaking: Ziwe proves that Showtime was indeed idiotic for cancelling her show with this old-school Baited style interview with disgraced former Congressman George Santos. Please enjoy what should take up at least a paragraph in upcoming American History textbooks.

2. Sometimes, a hat on a hat works. Mo Welch made an entire comedy special featuring a clever subversion of the “dad joke” trope that is intercut with documentary footage of her reconnecting with her dad, 20 years estranged (oh yeah, it’s called Dad Jokes). Equal parts brash, hilariously dark, heart-string-tugging, and enthralling, Welch amazingly brings all these disparate tones and elements into a beautiful dramedic harmony for a mesmerizing hour special that really lives up to the moniker of a “special”. Watch Dad Jokes now on demand on Veeps.

2. The international Aussie rom com Colin from Accounts gets on with production of its second season (Deadline). Perhaps, in its 3rd season, people will be convinced to pay for Paramount +?

3. Curb Your Enthusiasm will be ending with a 12th season, which means it went 3 seasons further than Seinfeld. Had Seinfeld gone 12 seasons, would it have had a better finale?

4. Emma Willmann tells the truth about not being the best taxpayer (technically, a criminal?) in a damn fun Don’t Tell set. Please enjoy here.

5. We’ll leave you with this: Welp, Fox Nation is putting on a comedy tour.

TCB Debriefing 11/4/23: Jessica Sele, Atsuko Okatsuka, James Austin Johnson, Curb Your Enthusiasm, F Marry Kill

November 4, 2023
News
atsuko okatsuka, blonde medicine, comedy album, curb your enthusiasm, james austin johnson, jessica sele, lucy hale, seth meyers, stand up comedy, weird vibes

1. Nailing a comedy album title is often a quietly difficult challenge. Many a comedian try sidestepping it by just going the “Live at…” route while others fall short of the mark with a goofy name coupled with a corny pose for the album cover. For our money, the deeply funny Jessica Sele not only comedically lives up to the pitch perfect album title of Weird Vibes, her brand new record from venerable comedy record label Blonde Medicine, but she embodies it. Sele never ceases to surprise and has us snickering throughout the whole hour in fully embracing her own strangeness in every aspect of her life and presenting so frankly, but doing so with a gleeful awkwardness. All told, Weird Vibes radiates pretty sweet vibes. Weird Vibes is now streaming and available now wherever you get your comedy albums.

2. Not only is Atsuko Okatsuka full grown, but she is a bonafide comedy star. Just look at this tour schedule and sold out dates (and those added dates that you should get tix for if you’re anywhere around those cities).

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Atsuko Okatsuka (@atsukocomedy)

2. James Austin Johnson, yet again, proves that he’s the perfect weapon at SNL on his Late Night with Seth Meyers appearance this week.

3. Season 12 of Curb Your Enthusiasm is set for Feb. 2024. Perhaps, it’ll be an early Valentine’s gift on 2/12?

4. Turns out F*ck Marry Kill will be the latest game to be adapted into feature film (THR). This adaptation will, of course, not shy away from the nature of the game and, instead, lean into it with star Lucy Hale trying to figure out which of the three guys she’s dating is a local serial killer and which are F or marriage material. With all of that in mind, we are curious as to who owns the trademark to F Marry Kill if anyone.

5. We’ll leave you with this: Yes, this TCB Debriefing is a day late because we run this site all on our own and book a theater, so apologies for this and any future delays (and thank you kindly for reading).

Larry David Is Getting His Own HBO Doc “The Larry David Story”

February 17, 2022
News
comedy documentary, curb your enthusiasm, hbo, larry david

The prospect of a Larry David documentary that follows his rise to some of the highest echelons of comedy success might be attractive just off the idea that you might hear and see Larry take a step back from his Curb Your Enthusiasm persona or any sort of bits or riffing that he is celebrated for.

Also, his rise from being a comedian to creating Seinfeld to following that up with Curb will undoubtedly be a tale that you’ll have to hear as any sort of person doing, involved in, or a fan of comedy.

We’ll get a portrait of Larry’s long and distinguished comedy career in the upcoming HBO doc, The Larry David Story, which is the latest in the row of comedy docs that have come out recently (Phat Tuesdays, We Need to Talk About Cosby, The One and Only Dick Gregory, The Comedy Store, The Real Charlie Chaplin). Larry’s doc ought to stand out as he is not only still alive, but still very much working and thriving own his own terms and at his own whims.

Case in point that this docu-special will be shown in two parts titled “American Jewboy” and “The Jewish Fountainhead” on Mar. 1st at HBO at 9PM (and HBO Max). Get a look of the “real” Larry David talking about Larry in the trailer for The Larry David Story here.

The latest TCB Field Report has the amazing comedian/writer/podcaster Naomi Ekperigin zooming with TCB’s Jake Kroeger this week. Naomi and Jake take time to remember the late, great Carl Reiner and also dissect what lies ahead with comedy on TV with the renewal of Curb Your Enthusiasm (i.e. how relatable will Larry be in a post-pandemic world?) as well as how Hollywood is still missing the mark in achieving true racial equity. Ekperigin also lets us in on how her podcast and now, weekly Twitch live-stream, Couples Therapy, has been fostering community in quarantine and her personal experience finding connection through doing comedy on Zoom.

Also, Jake would like to apologize for referring to the character Lawrence on Insecure as Louis. Please forgive him.

Shout outs: Eddie Pepitone’s For The Masses, Chris Fairbanks’ Rescue Cactus, Eric Andre’s Legalize Everything, John Mulaney & The Sack Lunch Bunch.

Curb Your Enthusiasm Season 10 Trailer Gives You the Yelling At/From Larry That You Know That You Want

December 12, 2019

It’s season 10 of Curb Your Enthusiasm and the trailer looks pretty, pretty, prettyyyy satisfying. Larry is a catalyst for subtle chaos that explodes to not-so-subtle chaos (and Jon Hamm does a pretty great Larry impression next to Larry).

You know the drill by now.

See for yourself in the first full, official trailer.

Season 10 of Curb Your Enthusiasm premieres Sun. Jan. 19th 10:30PM on HBO.

Curb Your Enthusiasm Renewed for 10th Season at HBO

Officially, this means that Curb Your Enthusiasm will have had more seasons than Seinfeld. Also, think about how rare it is that live action scripted series get to double digit seasons these days. Truly, Larry David has built a comedy empire off of being annoyed about things.

Production for the tenth season of Curb Your Enthusiasm will start Spring 2018.

6 Years After Season 8 Ended, Season 9 of Curb Your Enthusiasm Premieres Tonight

Honestly, Larry David might have just set a record for “Comeback of a TV Series After Longest Hiatus That Isn’t a Reboot or Revival”. Season 8 of Curb Your Enthusiasm had its finale air in 2011 and now, over 6 years later, is kicking off season 9 tonight on HBO at 10PM.

You can see on this red carpet that Larry, sans sarcasm, is genuinely excited for this.

Curb Your Enthusiasm is coming back for season 9 on HBO on Sunday, October 1st.

As you can clearly see in the season 9 trailer, Larry David hasn’t lost in step in being a grouch. If anything, he may have actually upped his game a bit in being curmudgeon.

It’s hard to imagine anyone else bringing as much joy to people by being a grouch as Larry David.

Season 9 of his series Curb Your Enthusiasm is slated for its premiere on Sunday, October 1st at 10PM on HBO and, as this teaser shows, he’s pretty ready, once more, to be the charming stick in the mud that is the core of Curb.

John Oliver and his crack staff at Last Week Tonight couldn’t come back sooner this year.

However, we have a few more weeks before Oliver takes up his desk behind one of the best satirical news shows ever on television. Season 4 of Last Week Tonight premieres on Sunday, February 12th at 11PM.

While we won’t have an episode of Last Week Tonight commenting on the inauguration of Trump right after it happens, Oliver made a great teaser (some might say pretty, pretty good) to tide us over in the meantime.

“Curb Your Enthusiasm” Returning for Season 9 at HBO

Finally, something has happened that’s pretty, pretty, pretty good.

Announced this morning, HBO and Larry David have come to an agreement to bring back America’s favorite curmudgeon for a ninth season of Curb Your Enthusiasm.

Of course, Larry offered a perfect explanation for his return. “When asked why he decided to come back, David said, ‘In the immortal words of Julius Caesar, ‘I left, I did nothing, I returned.’”

SNL’s “Curb Your Enthusiasm” Parody with Larry David Might Be the Closest Thing to New ‘Curb’

With Larry David hosting last night’s SNL, it’s imperative that the show do something involving Larry’s HBO series Curb Your Enthusiasm and/or Larry as Bernie Sanders, since he was such a hit doing it the first time this season.

Thus SNL checked off two boxes with one Bern Your Enthusiasm.

It definitely plays more like an episode of Curb than a Bernie Sanders sketch, but, ehh, you’re probably ok with that.

Curb Your Enthusiasm’s David Mandel will be taking the reins upon Iannucci’s exit.

With family back home in London and an itch to do more movies, Armando Iannucci is stepping down from his own series Veep after four stellar seasons.

We can only hope this will go notably better than what happened in season 4 of Community and that maybe Iannucci will give British intelligence agencies another course on comedy in his spare time.

Larry David is making the rounds to promote his new play Fish In The Dark and his latest interview on The Late Show with David Letterman is the closest you’ll get to a new episode of Curb Your Enthusiasm at this current moment.

The episodes could be called The Theater or The Maid and watching him talk with Dave over it, you can just imagine very vividly it like an episode of Curb.

Larry David Might Still Be Up for Another Season of ‘Curb Your Enthusiasm’

While in conversation with David Steinberg last night at the Ace Hotel in Downtown LA, Larry David was hounded about the future of Curb Your Enthusiasm.

David already has his upcoming Broadway play Fish in the Dark on his plate and admitted that he isn’t quite sure where he’d take the series, but he’s not closing the door on Curb yet. To Steinberg and the crowd, David commented, “I haven’t given up the hope.”

Though it’s sort of off-brand for HBO, if Curb Your Enthusiasm intended on returning for another season, a crossover episode with The Comeback might be a good starting point.

According to a conversation between Larry David and HBO programming president Michael Lombardo, David isn’t done with Curb Your Enthusiasm yet. However, a new season won’t be happening in 2014.
