The beloved, award winning, internationally acclaimed clowning duo Zach & Viggo are back in LA and are doing a (somewhat) secret show with one of their favorite bands, the funk punk outfit known as Thumpasaurus.

On Wednesday, October 17th at 8:30PM, you should probably find yourself over at Artshare LA (801 E. 4th Pl., Los Angeles, CA) for one hell of a silly, out there, downright fun, groovy, dance filled night, Where Does The Love Go.

You can (and should) get tickets starting at $10 here.

Sure, a cash prize Super Smash Bros. tournament is already pretty enticing on its own.

However, comedians riffing, talking trash, etc. is a pretty damn nice frosting on a solid cake.

Game On is promising all of this and more with the likes of Jak Knight and Jamel Johnson and more on that aforementioned panel of comedians.

Best of all, it’s FREE to watch. Get more details here.

Field of Dreams of Comedy (in a Living Room and the Warehouse)

September 20, 2011
Uncategorized
cheap, comedy news, comedy shows, downtown, echo park, free, independent, live, what to do

According to LA based comedian Andrew Solmssen, it’s “in the tradition of LA comedy to take place where it has no business being.” Currently, that tradition is firmly upheld by the comedy community in the Greater Los Angeles Area by comics big and small, experienced and green. There are shows that have taken place in garages, on rooftops, in the back of comic book stores, in sex shops, and more. Yet, while the cavalier independent spirit of LA comedy being fed up with relying on someone else for stage time, few shows are set-up and run so perfectly that you wouldn’t know that you were in someone’s living room.

While shows like Meltdown in the back of Meltdown Comics (AKA the Nerdist Theater) have been featured on Last Call with Carson Daly, there are other shows that also “do it right” in the most unlikely spaces. One-Two Punch, a comedy variety show taking place in a repurposed living room, and Neighbors, a stand-up show that takes place at an independent clothing store called the Warehouse, are two such shows that, luck would have it, you can catch both this week for less than $5. If you’ve never seen live comedy or you’re a borderline obsessive comedy nerd, these are two shows that need to be on your comedy bucket list. Also, you need to start making a comedy bucket list if you’re going to continue to live in or near LA.

Barbara Gray and Whitney Teubner put together an almost seasonal comedy show at their lovely Benton Manor that has become one of those urban myths that happens to be true. Moving all the furniture in their living room, renting chairs, setting up proper lighting, draping a traditional red curtain with a wonderfully homemade sign that spells out letter by letter One-Two Punch already makes for a great set-up for a night of comedy. Then, there’s a punch bowl and LA’s best comedians to make a great night of comedy, a one-of-a-kind night of comedy. The likes of Maria Bamford, Rory Scovel, Matt Braunger, and Kyle Kinane have graced their stage and have made audiences at “One-Two” feel like they’re at a normal comedy venue. Featuring random characters and sketches as well, there is no excuse to miss out on this show, especially after it’s been featured in the LA Times and only costs $3. Well, if you can’t get in because there is no room left to sit or stand is the one and only reason you should miss out this Saturday with the amazing Brent Weinbach and Eric Andre who both were on Lopez Tonight before it went off the air as well as Johnny Pemberton who was one of the Just for Laughs Montreal’s Fresh Faces.

Though only on their sophomore edition, Neighbors had such a fantastic inaugural show that it needs to be the word-on-the-street in Echo Park, Downtown and beyond. For all of this year, comedian/producer Abbey Londer has run several one-off comedy shows throughout LA from the Hollywood Improv all the way to the XRT theatre in the Warehouse District to success. Along with earning her stripes proving that Abbey knows how to put on a show, Neighbors is co-produced by up-and-coming, touring comedian Karl Hess who has been on the road with the aforementioned Kyle Kinane and has been also an aforementioned JFL Fresh Face. The duo make their night of comedy at the patio of a clothing store an event that no one would have the slightest idea wasn’t a Comedy Central taping. Though there isn’t a roof, but a great vibe is already set by the brick walls, a firepit, a professional DJ, and a food truck. Neighbors takes place tomorrow night at the Warehouse (1197 W. Sunset Blvd., Los Angeles, CA), free of charge, with a fantastic line-up including Laurie Kilmartin who writes for Conan, TJ Miller who has an upcoming Comedy Central Special, Pete Holmes who already had a Comedy Central Special, and more.

Whether comedy actually has business in living rooms and patios is up for debate, but that should be no reason to go against tradition, especially this one.

1) Aubrey Plaza is “one of the most fascinating people” that Conan’s talked to into awhile.

2) Don Rickles on Jimmy Kimmel Live (including Parts 1 & 2).

3) Over the last few months, there has been a lot of talk about the consequences of talking about sexual assault and rape on stage and being aware of the sensitivity of audience members. Today, Barbara Holm gives an interesting flip on the debate in regards to hecklers sexually harassing comedians at Laughspin.

4) A guy sells punny-one liners in a park. There was a guy in Venice who just used to take donations and would make a living performing his act on the street. Is America prime for “street comedy”?

5) Laughter Against the Machine, a comedy tour bringing laughs to political hot spots around the U.S., is only a few days away from needing to meet their donation goal. If that wasn’t enough, hear what Marc Maron had to say about it.

2) If you follow everything that I write, I spend quite a bit of time defending what comedians say, even if I think it’s hack, bigoted, etc., but somehow has made other people laugh. However, this latest case of an audience member telling a story of date-raping a girl at the show ASSSSCAT during the Del Close Marathon in NY is something that I can’t and won’t intellectually defend even if he was somehow kidding and made the whole thing up. From all accounts, people were cringing, verbally booing, and more in an attempt to get him to stop, which really breaks the main rule that I stand behind, which is “no matter what you talk about, you have to be funny.” Get the full story from Halle Kiefer at Splitsider.

12) OK, I love this city dearly and inhabitants, often transplants, are resentful of LA not living up to their expectations. It’s an unfortunate circumstance for any metropolis this size and I sincerely wish anyone that whines about being guilted to live here because they felt they had to in order to accomplish something would go back to where they came from. Even with that in mind and making my peace with all the shortcomings of Los Angeles, freeway construction at 1AM at every fucking off-ramp and on-ramp causing bumper to bumper traffic can go fuck itself once we make that possible.

12) So, we got the most traffic we’ve ever gotten here yesterday and it was all because of a reblog/retweet of a PDF of a great article by Zach Dionne on the WTF Podcast. As it was misinterpreted by a few people as to who wrote the piece (it’s wasn’t us), we feel compelled to have an actual piece about Marc Maron here written by us, which will be a review of his new album “This Has To Be Funny”, to be posted very soon.

People in 2011 Still Don’t Understand What An Open Mic Is

July 26, 2011
Uncategorized
arts district, cancelled, comedy news, downtown, little tokyo, los angeles, open mics

“So we decided that we’re not going to have a comedy night anymore.”

That is what the management of Señor Fish told Russell Corona and me, Jake Kroeger, yesterday when we asked if we’re going to be allowed to run the Big Trouble in Little Tokyo Open Mic today. No matter how many times we posted and how many times it was even written on their dirty sandwich board that it was an open mic, Señor Fish failed to grasp the idea of open mic, especially one that focuses on comedy.

Open mics in general, no matter what art form is being performed, are supposed to be safe environments where one has the freedom to fail.  When it comes to being a comedian, an open mic is invaluable for not only hearing what you thought was such a genius comic book hero joke and finding it’s clunky as hell all the way to just getting comfortable talking to a room full of strangers a few minutes at a time.  With that in mind, both Russell Corona and myself asked about language and content restrictions for our show.  Though we were told we weren’t restricted in such regard, we were never told or hinted to the idea that Señor Fish was a “family friendly” restaurant.  Perhaps “family friendly” etched somewhere on a lone brick that was painted over in the gauche blue they have been using as of late.

If we had knew that, we would have gone elsewhere because open mics, in the truest sense, are not family friendly.  The idea that Señor Fish, which is a Mexican Seafood Bar & Grill hardly ever had a family friendly vibe, especially with the numerous DJ showcases, the stocking of more high end tequila, is quite shocking to both Russell and me.  The bigger point to be made is that the open mic took place in the back room of the bar section of Señor Fish (which has a separate address from the actual restaurant).  We were in a bar where they serve alcohol at great happy hour prices. That’s not “family friendly” no matter how you spin it.

We had been running the Big Trouble in Little Tokyo Open Mic successfully every single week at the same exact time with a consistent flow of comics coming through that bought beer and food without a minimum being imposed on them.  Yet, last week, after including an awesome sketch with hilarious and immensely talented Davey Johnson in which he bumped into a few chairs, mimed auto-erotic asphyxiation with his shirt and pants off, management found the reason that they were perhaps looking for to never have comedy again at their “family friendly” establishment.  Before I continue, though Señor Fish didn’t like Davey’s bit, everyone else that was witness to it did; some saying it was one of the most hilarious things they had ever seen.  I, as co-producer of the show, don’t regret for an instant having Davey Johnson do what Davey Johnson does and I urge each and everyone of you to catch him every Saturday at the Tomorrow Show as part of the Doorknockers with Randy Liedtke.

Though Davey did knock over some chairs and mime a sex act without most of his clothes, there have been way worst things that have been performed on that stage.  Horribly sexist, racist, threatening, and, most importantly, terribly unfunny garbage has been spat out at our open mic because, once again, it’s an open mic.  The good, the amazing, the bad, the insecure, the assholes, the comics who have no idea what they’re doing up there, pretty girls singing songs that sound like very Starbucks PA system ever, the guitar comic, the erotic magician, rappers just starting out, and more were all taken in like they’re supposed to at an open mic.

So, there will be no more live comedy at the Señor Fish located at the southwest corner of 1st St. and Alameda in the Little Tokyo neighborhood of Downtown LA.  Though it is sad as we had a great time running it and giving artists a space to work on their art (even to the point where we mentioned briefly in the LA Times), Señor Fish’s decision is more than fine by us as we were never paid beyond some beer and food that wasn’t fish for our efforts to actually drag a stage from across a parking lot, flip rooms full of furniture, just try to ignore the fact their on-call handyman is painting the room during our show without any notice ahead of time, and more bullshit that we just had to put up with in addition to the running one of the more popular open mics on the LA comedy circuit.

Undoubtedly, this will be hardly the last live comedy mic/show we will ever run and the Comedy Bureau will keep you updated on where the next one will be, but thank you to all who came and performed, especially the booked “special guests” that could have dropped in at a club for a better spot, watched, supported, or even thought about coming down to check it out and could never make it.  Our efforts were validated because of all of you and, one more time, we thank you.

And yes, this “tagged” flyer above is my lame attempt at being Banksy (even made lamer by the fact that I made the original flyer).
