Pick of the Day: Brett Goldstein (near LA) 12/10 + *Tix Giveaway*

December 6, 2023
News
brett goldstein, los angeles comedy, pasadena, stand up comedy

If you’re nestled in the cozy heights of Pasadena surrounded by a much more classic LA aesthetic, we get that you probably don’t want to leave all that often to LA proper or even hike it to something cool at Highland Park. That leaves limited comedy options for you if that’s the case. The Ice House, LA’s oldest comedy club is back in action, but they can only give you so many options.

Suffice it to say that it isn’t every night or even every week or every month that someone like Brett Goldstein (i.e. Roy Kent and Hercules) comes through the Pasadena city limits. Yet, Goldstein is headlining the classic Pasadena Civic Auditorium this Sun. Dec. 10th at 7PM. It’s a hop, skip, and not even a jump from Old Pasadena, so you can get in a stroll and probably some very expensive wine in before you head to the show.

Tickets start at $72 and you can buy ’em here, but we actually have a couple pairs of tickets if you want them. Just let us know at thecomedybureau@gmail.com!

Pick of the Day: Pasadena Doo Dah Parade (near LA) 11/19

November 18, 2023
News
doo dah parade, los angeles comedy, pasadena

Lots of pomp and circumstance surround the annual Rose Parade in Pasadena, one of the first things that greets the new year in LA. Yet, not enough is said about the more underground and free spirited procession that is the annual Pasadena Doo Dah Parade.

Several weeks before the legendary march of elaborate rose floats and various marching bands and horses, a certain Burning Man vibe comes through Old Town Pasadena with arguably more color and exuberance than the Rose Parade (and a whole lot more tongue and cheek fun). Also, you can enter to be in the parade for $10 and you won’t have to deal with college football fans!

The Doo Dah Parade is happening this Sun. starting at 11AM, is free to attend, and is starting at Raymond Ave. x Holly St then turning onto Colorado Blvd and going through to Pasadena Ave. Get more info @pasadenadoodah.

The Ice House Is (Probably) Reopening in Early February

December 23, 2022
News
comedy club, ice house, los angeles, pasadena

(via Pasadena Now)

At this point, nearly every single comedy venue in LA and NYC that was going to reopen after lockdown from COVID-19 was lifted has returned to doing business in our “new normal”. In fact, The Ice House in Pasadena, LA’s oldest comedy club, is an intriguing case and exception as they closed to renovate in 2019, got caught by quarantine and COVID-19 lockdown, then had to go finish up their renovations (further prolonged by the fact that LA county does not make getting through building permits and construction easy or fast whatsoever).

That said, the wait looks to be over as claimed in a Pasadena Now interview with current Ice House owner Johnny Buss (yes, he’s the son of Dr. Jerry Buss). The legendary comedy club is still finishing up construction, but will likely be done in January and then take a few weeks to train up staff for a project Feb. 9th opening. When the doors swing back open, look for the bathrooms, the bar, and the patio to all be expanded, a fresh new look for both show rooms, and a much needed spot for open mics in Pasadena.

The reopening of The Ice House will be the final reopening of a comedy club in LA, which we’re thankful to hear that will put a cap on any sort of comedy venue in LA not surviving from 2019.

Pick of the Day: Thundercat and Hannibal Buress at Rose Bowl Drive-In 10/24

October 6, 2020
News
drive in show, hannibal buress, live comedy, los angeles, pasadena, rose bowl, thundercat

As far as drive-in shows have gone in the LA area, The Rose Bowl is kind of as high class as it gets thus far. As such, Comedy Dynamics went ahead and shot four different comedians for specials that will be released on a date TBD. Later this month, the fun and funky co-headlining pair of Thundercat and Hannibal Buress will be taking the drive-in stage at The Rose Bowl.

Buress and Thundercat together, drive-in or not, make for an unforgettable night of grooves and shenanigans that is worth the price per car and/or person and making the trek to Pasadena. There are two shows lined-up for Thundercat  and Hannibal on Sat. Oct. 24th at 4:30PM and 8:30PM. Tickets are almost sold out for the late show, so they just added an afternoon show.

Tickets per car (price per person ranges depending on size of car) start from $120 and go up to $325 for VIP tickets. Go snag them before they’re all gone here.

Billy Wayne Davis is one of our favorite comedians working today with his sly comic sensibilities masked by his welcoming voice (as well as being one of the rare comedians to record an album at Jack White’s Third Man Records).

He’ll be taping his brand new special this Wednesday at an old chapel at Mountain View Mortuary & Cemetery in Altadena, CA.

That’s right, you’ll get to see Billy tape his hour at a funeral home’s chapel.

There are two tapings, 7:30PM and 10:30PM, and they aiming to start on time. Admission is free so long as you RSVP at BookingBWD@gmail.com. We’re going to say that this will be worth the trek to Altadena if you’re not close.

Well, looks LA, or Pasadena more specifically, is getting its very own comedy show on its a golf course because indie LA comedy has to do be “field-of-dreams-y” about where it does shows (don’t worry the rain will be well over by then).

These days, it’s kind of rare to see Marc Maron do a headlining set in town.

So, perhaps, you don’t want to miss out on the four shows that Maron will be doing Thurs. Jul. 19th-Sat. Jul. 21st. at The Ice House and it’ll be worth going out to Pasadena next weekend.

Tickets are $20 (plus 2 drink min.) and we’re pretty sure this will sell out. So get your tickets ASAP here.

Perhaps, this Jan. 1st, you might want to either pull an all nighter on New Year’s Eve or not get so hammered on champagne that you sleep through the morning.

That way, you can watch Will Ferrell and Molly Shannon, in character as Cord Hosenbeck and Tish Cattigan, bring some mischief to the time honored New Year’s Day tradition of the Rose Parade.

You’ll be able to watch their hijinks at 8AM PST live via Amazon Prime.

3) The Earwolf Challenge is here. America’s First Reality Podcast.

“Earwolf announced ‘Project Tippy-Toe’ where we asked for comedy podcasters to send us applications for a ‘super secret Earwolf project’. We were inundated with podcasts; over 120 to be exact – and we listened to all of them. Needless to say, it took a long fucking time; emphasis on the ‘fucking’.

After we sifted through the silt and the shit (silt being the good ones), we found the ten best podcasts to compete in the challenge. Matt Besser graciously agreed to be the host of the show, and we flew the ten competitors to Los Angeles and put them up in a local mansion.* Thus is where we begin the show.”

11) Transformers 3 becomes the highest grossing movie of 2011. You do know that means that the rights to Transformers 6, 7, 8, all the way up to Transformers 10 are probably locked down by Michael Bay?  Thanks to everyone who watches shiny things shoved down your throat because it’s been marketed to you every second of your waking life, we’ll be watching 2 hour music videos on the big screen for years to come. Yes, I graduated from film school and am still somewhat pretentious and have most likely forgotten what childhood was like, but I’m OK with that.

8) Yesterday, the Comedy Bureau posted the article, “Why are THEY on the Show?” about the unfortunate trading of spots on shows that happens in LA and some readers were wondering a few things.  Specifically, The Comic’s Comic wondered about comics who struggle to get stage time starting their own room.  I have no problem with other comics starting their own room to get their own stage time if they can’t get it elsewhere.  Again, I reiterate stay away from trading spots.  Whether they are good or bad as comics is a matter of subjectivity to me really, but, as I point out in the article, if they can find an audience of their own, my opinion doesn’t really matter.  Another reader wondered that if a person works the Haha, Ice House, Comedy Store, Improv that they should get a shot at performing at another room.  First off, there are plenty of comics that are (and I’m putting this very politely) raw that get to perform at all of those clubs.  Once more, as I pointed in the article, plenty of comics can get laughs, but if they’re not funny to the booker, why should the booker put them up?  Last week, I saw someone do nothing but offensive material jumbling up the most controversial topics to date (i.e. Libya, Tsunami, and Liz Taylor’s Death) into one dick joke ridden mess and kill.  Did I laugh? I didn’t even smile.  Just because this comic happened to do good on a certain night because they had a good spot on the show, I don’t feel obligated or guilted to promote their comedy as, plain and simple, I don’t find them funny.  If you have any further questions regarding this article or anything else, please send them to thecomedybureau@gmail.com.
