Pick of the Day: Guys We F****D Live in LA 2/14

January 22, 2024
News
comedy store, corinne fisher, krystyna hutchinson, live podcast

Without a doubt, when all is said and done, one of the best, most revered podcasts about dating will be Krystyna Hutchinson and Corinne Fisher‘s Guys We F****D. So, it would stand to reason that a special Valentine’s Day live taping of their lauded, unfiltered dating and relationship show at the world famous Comedy Store should not be missed.

That is actually happening, by the way. Krystyna and Corinne are doing a live Guy We F****D on Valentine’s Day at 8PM in the Main Room of The Comedy Store and tickets are almost gone. You best go get them at $25 a pop (plus 2 drink min.) right now right here.

Pick of the Day: 50 First Jokes (in LA) 1/7

December 29, 2023
News
50 first jokes, comedy store

If you were wondering if the annual big show at the beginning of the year where 50 or so comedians tell the first joke they wrote in the new year was going to happen, indeed it is. 50 First Jokes is an institution around the country where the best comics in their respective scenes gather for an extravaganza.

This year’s LA edition will happen at The World Famous Comedy Store, a new destination for 50 First Jokes (and actually the first time it has happened at an actual comedy club in LA). 2024’s 50 First Jokes is slated for Sun. Jan. 7th at 7:30PM. Tickets are $20 and you can (and should) go get them here.

TCB Debriefing 12/28/23: Neel Nanda, Tommy Smothers, Comedy Store, Sean Patton

December 28, 2023
News
comedy store, neel nanda, paid regulars, russell brand, sean patton, tommy smothers

1. R.I.P. Neel Nanda. His tragic passing comes only a few days and change after Kenny DeForest’s death. It’s so much all at once and all out of nowhere. Please take care of yourself and each other and definitely cherish your favorite comedians (and let them know how much they mean to you).

2. Also, R.I.P. Tommy Smothers of the storied Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour. If you’ve only heard of The Smothers Brothers brought up in comedy documentaries and books on the history of comedy, you should probably take a watch and listen to their show/records and see why they always get referenced as a milestone in comedy as an art form.

3. The Comedy Store has officially passed its latest round of Paid Regulars. Thrilled to see that Kyle Kinane is getting long overdue due.

4. More so than a lot of New Year’s resolutions that probably won’t go the distance, you should resolve to see way more of Sean Patton in 2024 (and lucky for you, he’s got more dates for his Material Tour)

5. We’ll leave you with this: Despite loads of controversy and allegations, Russell Brand’s production company, Pablo Diablo’s Legitimate Business Firm, reported a $6 million+ profit (Deadline). Also, the name of his company is officially Pablo Diablo’s Legitimate Business Firm.

Pick of the Day: Filth with Steph Tolev (in LA) 12/5

November 28, 2023
News
comedy store, filth, los angeles comedy, steph tolev

Go figures as there is John Waters: Pope of Trash exhibit at the Academy Museum that there would be an ascent of a Queen of Filth just up the road at a comedy club. That’s right, Steph Tolev is a well-earned, self-styled Queen of Filth with the perfect husky voice to compliment and she’s doing a very special, very blue night of stories and stand-up at The Comedy Store this coming Tues. Dec. 5th.

When it comes to going dirty, Tolev isn’t so much wheeling and dealing in going graphic just for the sake of it or for schadenfreude, but is so exquisitely talented at sourcing comedy out of the filthiest crevices she can find every month with the aptly named, Filth.

Also, this night will be double as a toy drive for the WeHo LAFD, so you can do some good while listening to something that’s unequivocally NSFW.

Tickets are $10 (plus 2 drink min.) and you can (and should) go get them here.

Pick of the Day: Jay Larson Live Taping (in LA) 9/17

September 7, 2023
News
comedy store, jay larson, live taping, los angeles comedy, stand up

One of the keenest observers and storytellers in comedy is, without a doubt, Jay Larson. To this day, he still has one of the most popular sets on Conan and, for our money, has some of the best crowd work questions. Larson has been the type of comedian for several years now, making his performances a delight whenever/wherever they happen.

With that in mind, Larson is doing a very special taping of his “signature bits” in the intimate space of the Belly Room at The Comedy Store. Don’t miss Jay essentially doing his “greatest hits” once more on Sun. Sept. 17th at 7PM & 9:30PM. Tickets are only $10 (+ 2 drink min.). Go get them here and here, respectively.

TCB Debriefing 7/25/23: Comedy Store Paid Regulars, Strange Planet, Rachel Bloom, Poor Things, Craig Ferguson, Sam Bee

July 25, 2023
News

1. The Comedy Store just celebrated Names Night, christening their latest round of Paid Regulars. That includes Dulce Sloan, Luke Schwartz, Hormoz Rashidi, Saul Trujillo, Matt Lockwood, Dave Waite, King Congdon, Sara Weinshenk, Bruce Gray, Shapel Lacey, Laura Peek, Amy Miller, and Quincy Weekley.

2. Strange Planet, the webcomic sensation turned best selling book is now going to be the latest reason that you’ll have to go in on  if you don’t already have it. See for yourself with the first official trailer here with what might be the best comic adaptation we’ve seen in quite some time (yes, that does mean shots fired at MCU and DCEU).

3. Rachel Bloom set the TV world ablaze with the beautifully genre-bending, hilarious Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, and is set to do the same with her one-woman musical comedy, Death, Let Me Do My Show at the Lucille Lortel Theatre, Off Broadway (Deadline). Bloom’s time on Broadway or on Off-Broadway is far past due. Previews begin Sept. 6th, so you best watch for tickets on her socials very soon.

4. Poor Things, the latest work from one of the great comedy auteurs of our time, Yorgos Lanthimos, will be an early holiday gift as the release date just got pushed back to Dec. 8th (Collider).

5. A mockumentary feature about producers not getting their act together gets a SAG-AFTRA waiver to move forward with production (Deadline). Can’t imagine this being done without addressing the strike and AMPTP.

6. A brand new podcast for iHeart simply called, Joy, marks the official entry of once late night talk show mainstay Craig Ferguson into the podcast realm (even though he did a SiriusXM radio show that you could listen to like a podcast online). Just a polite reminder here that some of the best interviews and monologues in late night came from Ferguson and CBS barely put any of it on YouTube.

7. Though Full Frontal has been gone from TBS for some time now, Samantha Bee is still front and center with her current live show Your Favorite Woman: The Joys of Sex Education. If you’re just hearing about it for the first time, fret not, as she has just extended her tour by adding 17 more dates in North America (Deadline).

8. Speaking of late night, it’s undeniable that there’s a bit of a void without topical jokes being delivered in some fashion on a nightly basis by someone who isn’t Greg Gutfeld.

Pick of the Day: Family Dinner with Jodie Sweetin (in LA) 3/11

February 28, 2023
News
comedy store, jodie sweetin, los angeles comedy, mike binder, rob haze, vanessa guerrero

The overwhelming majority of what you can see at the legendary Comedy Store on the Sunset Strip is some of the biggest names and the up-and-comers nipping at their heels doing stand-up. That said, there are things that a little offbeat that happen upstairs in The Belly Room such as an entire family style dinner/comedy talk show that the one and only Full House star Jodie Sweetin hosts.

Each comedian on the line-up brings their very own dish to share and enjoy (or, conversely, be curious about?), which provides for the wondrous experience of getting all the fun of a chaotic family dinner, but not having to deal with your very own family. This round of Family Dinner with Jodie Sweetin is set for Sat. Mar. 11th at 8PM at The Comedy Store with comedians LA scene favorite Rob Haze, director of Comedy Store docu-series Mike Binder, and delightful comedy multi-hypehate Vanessa Guerrero.

Tix are $15 (plus 2 drink min.) and you can (and very much should) go get them here.

Pick of the Day: Fictional Roast: Santa (in LA) 12/22

December 14, 2022
News
comedy roast, comedy store, eddie furth, fictional roast, historical roast, los angeles comedy, ryan pigg, santa

If you’re more into the Violent Night or Christmas Bloody Christmas this holiday season, you’re probably not in the market for a typical yuletide-tinged comedy show that’s perhaps just stories about dealing with your family during December.

What you might be more into is a full tilt roast of the figure head of Christmas himself, Santa Claus. Thankfully, that exact thing is happening at The Comedy Store thanks to Eddie Furth and Ryan Pigg, the minds behind Historical Roasts on Netflix, with a Fictional Roast: Santa Claus. Comedians donning the characters of Mrs. Claus, The Grinch, Scrooge, Rudolph, Frosty, and a Christmas Tree will all assemble as the dais for sending up the jolly saint.

This Fictional Roast of Santa Claus is set for Thurs. Dec. 22nd at 8PM, up in The Belly Room of The Comedy Store. Tickets are $15 and we suggest you go snag them now here as space there is limited.

A member of the Groundlings Main Company, Comedy Store regular, and Taurean on Insecure, Leonard Robinson joins TCB’s Jake Kroeger  to talk on how the Groundlings have survived/thrived through both virtual improv/sketch shows almost kind of like they used to do in person (with a few clever changes for Zoom) and how they’re moving forward with diversity and inclusion measures (even beyond what they were already doing before last summer). Also, Robinson gives just a little insight on Insecure season 5 and “hot” takes on the Phoebe Waller-Bridge/Donald Glover reboot of Mr & Mrs. Smith and the reopening of Cap City and The Creek & The Cave down in Austin, TX.

It’s so rare to seem someone great actual headline in LA, much less at The Comedy Store.

So, you really ought to not miss your chance to see the one and only Eric Andre, harbinger of (comedic) chaos, do his latest hour up in The Comedy Store’s Belly Room next Fri., Nov. 15th at 8PM. We’re not sure exactly what’s going to happen, but that is part of the thrill of seeing Eric Andre live these days, especially on this Legalize Everything Tour.

Tickets are only $15 (+ 2 item min.). Go get them before they sell out here.

Since Historical Roasts just dropped on Netflix today, we only feel it only appropriate to give you a heads up on what certainly will be an inappropriate evening, a Historical Roast of Mother Teresa at the Comedy Store this week. This might actually be the most prestigious dais they’ve had on a roast with Gandhi, Princess Di, Mr. Rogers, Jesus, Oprah, Martin Luther King Jr., and Pope John Paul II.

The original co-reators and hosts Eddie Furth and Ryan Pigg of the show will be presiding over the evening in the Belly Room of The Comedy Store (so you best get your tickets quick). Do so here.

We’d bet that you’ll both wonder how they got away with it to tell you the tale and be glad that you’re not part of the story.

Julie Seabaugh’s “Ringside at Roast Battle” Captures the History of the International Comedy Phenomenon

Roast Battle is, at this point in time, one of the most exciting series on Comedy Central’s schedule, a partial lifeblood of The Comedy Store, officially franchised to several countries around the world, and proof positive that any taboo subject can be made into comedy.

It wasn’t too long ago that two open mic’ers were stopped short of a full brown brawl at the parking lot of The Comedy Store and subsequently told to write and deliver roast jokes about each other.

Ringside at Roast Battle: The First Five Years of LA’s Fight Club for Comedians by Julie Seabaugh (one of the most veteran comedy journalists around) captures all of that history from inception to its current status as an international sensation in this book. it should only come as a little surprising that the rise of a trash talking contest is fraught with drama and Julie, one of Roast Battle’s most frequent attendants, tackles it all in wondrous detail. The accompanying photos in the book are taken by Roast Battle’s photographer, Troy Conrad.

Ringside at Roast Battle, just released today, is a marvelous edition of comedy history that’s still happening and you can and very much should go get it here.

So Here Are Some Clips of That “Roast Battle” That Everyone Keeps Talking About

April 26, 2015
Uncategorized
brian moses, comedy store, jeff ross, rell battle, roast battle

If you haven’t been able to cram yourself into The Comedy Store’s Belly Room on late Tuesday nights, you have been missing out.

Brian Moses and Rell Battle have made one of LA’s truly hottest shows (just check LA Weekly and Vulture),  by pitting comics together a la a rap battle and have switched bars for roast jokes.

Roast Battle is probably one of the best things The Comedy Store has had in a long time and it’s only a matter of time before it gets even more notoriety. Roastmaster General Jeff Ross has become a regular fixture on the show as a judge.

So, as many folks can’t get out to the Sunset Strip by midnight on a Tues., here are choice clips of some memorable past Roast Battles including:

Candice Thompson vs. Virginia Collins

Jamar Neighbors vs. Jesus Trejo

Sarah Tiana vs. Pete C

So far, they keep making “to watch” lists and have been to SXSW, Riot LA, and will go to the NY Comedy Fest.

Both of Ari Shaffir’s most recent stand-up specials, Passive Aggressive and Paid Regular, will be premiering on network TV on Comedy Central in 2015.

Though Passive Aggressive was shot years ago, it’s still rare for a single comedian to have two specials premiere on the same network in the same year.

Paid Regular will air on Fri. Jan. 16th at midnight and Passive Aggressive will air on Fri. Mar. 13th also at midnight.

Along with the premiere of the storytelling show that Shaffir hosts, This Is Not Happening, Ari should have quite the 2015.
