Pick of the Day: Comedy Central Featuring (in LA) 1/31

January 25, 2024
News
amberia allen, amy silverberg, andrea jin, comedy central, derrick stroup, gus constantellis, kalea mcneill, la comedy, lodge room, lorena russi, madison sinclair, morgan jay, orion levine, papp johnson, sean patton, stand up comedy, sydney castillo, zach noe towers

Comedy Central is still indeed a center for comedy in 2024. This will be reaffirmed by the their latest round of tapings for their short form stand-up digital series, Comedy Central Featuring, taped beautifully in gorgeous venues in LA and NYC. The latest round of CCSUF will return to LA’s Lodge Room complete with its ornate wood accents and warm atmosphere on Wed. Jan. 31st.

On the bill is a combo of all time favorites and great newcomers including Sean Patton, Morgan Jay, Zach Noe Towers, Amberia Allen, Andrea Jin, and more for a hot 5-7 minute set that will find its way to YouTube probably months from now.

Per usual, it’s free to attend (with RSVP) and an open bar for an hour. There are two tapings, one at 7PM and another at 9PM. Make sure you’ve got a reservation here.

TCB Debriefing 12/28/23: Neel Nanda, Tommy Smothers, Comedy Store, Sean Patton

December 28, 2023
News
comedy store, neel nanda, paid regulars, russell brand, sean patton, tommy smothers

1. R.I.P. Neel Nanda. His tragic passing comes only a few days and change after Kenny DeForest’s death. It’s so much all at once and all out of nowhere. Please take care of yourself and each other and definitely cherish your favorite comedians (and let them know how much they mean to you).

2. Also, R.I.P. Tommy Smothers of the storied Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour. If you’ve only heard of The Smothers Brothers brought up in comedy documentaries and books on the history of comedy, you should probably take a watch and listen to their show/records and see why they always get referenced as a milestone in comedy as an art form.

3. The Comedy Store has officially passed its latest round of Paid Regulars. Thrilled to see that Kyle Kinane is getting long overdue due.

4. More so than a lot of New Year’s resolutions that probably won’t go the distance, you should resolve to see way more of Sean Patton in 2024 (and lucky for you, he’s got more dates for his Material Tour)

5. We’ll leave you with this: Despite loads of controversy and allegations, Russell Brand’s production company, Pablo Diablo’s Legitimate Business Firm, reported a $6 million+ profit (Deadline). Also, the name of his company is officially Pablo Diablo’s Legitimate Business Firm.

TCB Debriefing 9/29/23: Joe Zimmerman, Sean Patton, Toxic Avenger, Invisible Fight, Perfect Amount of Wrong

September 29, 2023
News
invisible fight, joe zimmerman, mike bridenstine, perfect amount of wrong, sean patton, toxic avenger

1. Without a doubt, Joe Zimmerman has one of the best comedy specials of this year with Cult Classic. In 2023, believe it or not, Zimmerman achieved that on the strength of classical joke writing/telling/delivery alone. The most stodgy old guard comedy snobs and modern day comedy fans alike should love this special. We’ll leave our thoughts at that for now and expound how much we dig Zimmerman’s latest hour for later. For the time being, just enjoy Cult Classic, free of charge and streaming service on YouTube right here.

2. Rain, sleet, or snow, we’ll probably endure any conditions to go see the brilliant Sean Patton, a master of both tall tales and hysterical, heart-wrenching true stories. He’s on tour come November across the U.S. of A. You need to go tickets now at meseanpatton.com and plan accordingly on how to get to any of these cities if you don’t already live relatively close to them.

3. The Troma classic The Toxic Avenger from Lloyd Kaufman is getting a modern/actually budgeted update with a star-studded cast that includes Peter Dinklage in the title role, that includes Jacob Tremblay, Taylour Paige, Julia Davis, Jonny Coyne, Elijah Wood, and Kevin Bacon. It almost feels like part of the Suicide Squad Universe derived from the DCEU with its plethora of delightful viscera. Take a gory gander here.

4. Mike Bridenstine’s Perfect Amount of Wrong, a wondrous detailed chronicle of the rise of alt comedy in Chicago’s North Side (that includes the ascent of Pete Holmes, John Mulaney, Kyle Kinane, Cameron Esposito, and Kumail Nanjiani) is out now. Go get a copy for yourself or as a present for the holidays for family or friends or, again, yourself.

5. We’ll leave you with this: Some folks might have taken the advice of the screenwriting how-to book Save the Cat a little too literally?

Pick of the Day: David Cross-Worst Daddy in the World Tour (in LA) 3/24

David Cross only comes to LA every once in awhile and it’s incumbent on us to notify you anytime he makes a stop in town as it’ll be a year or years until he stops in again. The same could almost be said for another one of NYC comedy’s very best, Sean Patton. Even in NYC where they go up all the time, no chance to see them should be missed.

Luckily for Angelenos, the two are coming to LA together this Friday, Mar. 24th at 8PM at the gorgeous Palace Theater in DTLA on David Cross’ adorably named Worst Daddy in the World Tour. Tickets are going for $42 and you really ought to snag them ASAP here since many of the best seats are already sold out.

Sean Patton’s First Hour Special “Number One” Proves This Shouldn’t Have Been His First Hour Special

December 5, 2022
News
comedy special, number one, peacock, sean patton, stand up

Between three full length albums, a Comedy Central half hour, a handful of late night sets, and a This Is Not Happening story, Sean Patton has served up, time and time again, truly grand stand-up comedy that has hints of more traditional joke structure scaffolding, but is also, at the same time, so colorful, imaginative, and beautifully tangential that it feels that it’s in a class all its own. Suffice it to say that Sean Patton, as far as The Comedy Bureau is concerned, should have gotten an hour special several years ago.

Thankfully, we don’t have to say that any more as his very first hour special, the aptly named Number One, just landed on Peacock.

Patton’s nearly unrivaled storytelling prowess and knack for some of the most wildly colorful imagery and panache-laden details are presented unadorned on a charmingly rustic stage in New Orleans, Patton’s hometown. Sean is one of a shrinking group of comedians that are so good at stand-up that they can do a straight-forward, classical stand-up special and leave an indelible mark as the credits roll. The sheer power of his voice/presence and delivery make the long winding rivers of his bits about his childhood and Hurricane Katrina are truly arresting and, of course, so damn funny at every bend.

If anything, Sean Patton’s Number One is worth going in on Peacock if you haven’t done so already (or gotten a friend’s pw).

Finally, Sean Patton Has a Comedy Special Coming Out, “Number One”, on Peacock

We have a list here at TCB that’s, well, not specifically written down anywhere, but has an ever-growing collection of names of comedians that are well past due for an hour special for how consistently and unbelievably hysterical they are. One of our all time favorite comedians, someone who we’d urge you to go out of your way to watch, Sean Patton is thankfully not on that list anymore.

Patton is simultaneously one of the best tale weavers, then also has one of the most colorful imaginations in all of comedy these days and the combination of those two qualities has been one of our favorite things to see on any stand-up stage anywhere. Listen to any of his albums or watch his This Is Not Happening ep. and you’ll hear why we’re thrilled that Peacock has given him an hour special due out Fri. Dec. 2nd.

Speaking of which, here’s the first gander you can take of Sean Patton: Number One here. Then make a reminder for Dec. 2nd to stream this on Peacock.

Will Smith’s Stand-Up Series “This Joka” Will Actually Get to See the Light of Day

Well before COVID-19, there was a weekend where many of LA and NYC’s very best comedians that you needed to know were swept up to Vegas to tape a special stand-up comedy series that was entirely put up by the one and only Will Smith. Called This Joka, it was going to be a new introduction to many of our absolute favorite comedians that we personally try to highlight whenever we can here at TCB.

So, not only did COVID-19 put a pause, interrupt the scheduling of, or even outright shut down so much comedy, but This Joka temporarily fell victim to originally be at the ill-fated short form streaming service, Quibi. When the news broke that Quibi was closing up shop, This Joka was still on the docket to premiere and we were worried that this whole series would never get to be seen by you, us, and everyone else that needs to see the future of stand-up comedy.

Thankfully, Roku bought up Quibi’s library including This Joka and we will all get treated to see Will Smith’s curated stand-up series that features Baron Vaughn, Sam Tallent, Punkie Johnson, Rosebud Baker, Clayton English, Chris Estrada, David Gborie, Sean Patton, Megan Gailey, Rell Battle, Shane Torres, Vanessa Gonzalez, Daphinque Springs, Martin Urbano, Jackie Fabulous, and Christi Chiello.

Many have since gone to new heights in their career by the way. Estrada has his own Hulu series in the works, Rosebud got her own special, and Sam became an acclaimed author.

Come Fri. Mar. 4th, you’ll be able to stream This Joka for free on Roku. You can get a taste of what’s to come (and get nostalgic about comedy right before COVID) with the trailer here.

Please Enjoy Sean Patton’s Saucy Latest Album, “King Scorpio”

January 25, 2022
News
comedy album, helium comedy, king scorpio, sean patton, stand up comedy

Due to the way that stand-up comedy behaves as an industry, especially in the U.S., there is a tendency of comedians to not fully flesh out ideas or see them through all the way into completion (even from the comedians’ own perspective). Stage time is at a such premium that most comedians that have an hour to present to you that is a hastily stitched together quilt of their best bits from various 10 minute sets that they’ve done over the last few years. This unfortunate dynamic disincentivizes exploration of material and finding hidden gold in what might feel like a well-worn premise or topic.

Thankfully, there’s Sean Patton to remedy that.

His painterly attention to detail and endless curiosity makes for marvelously full-bodied bits, dare we say, passages (for their breadth and girth) in his stand-up that offer up so much to savor upon several listens. His latest album, King Scorpio, does a bang up job exploring every single crevice and corner of very broad premises, getting hilariously specific to a point where you might not even be able to tell whether he’s riffing or deftly delivering well rehearsed jokes.

Also, Patton is no stranger to the bluer side of comedy, but it always comes from a genuine place as opposed to being blue or edgy for being blue or edgy’s sake and that’s thoroughly evident through this hour. Sean revels in the drunk or horny possibilities of a near future, per his colorful imagination here. Any comedic dissection of sex and drugs might seem tired these days, but, again, Sean’s specificity and very playful sense of wonder makes it fresh. Arguably, pulling that sort of feat off, going where there seems to be no surprises left and then still uncovering those hidden comedy truffles, is the mark of great comedy for us.

King Scorpio is both a raunchy dive into the unfettered desire-driven imagination of an artist of the night and a joyous, hopeful hour of stand-up comedy from Sean Patton. With that in mind, you should enjoy it and give it a listen as soon as you can.

Pick of the Day: Mint Comedy x Comedy Cellar 1/1/21

No matter how lauded or venerable it may be, seeing any comedy venue survive these times is a blessing. There have been plenty of closures of celebrated comedy institutions around the country and there will very likely be more as the latest stimulus bill will likely fall short of what many venues need in terms of relief.

With that in mind, it’s great to see that The Comedy Cellar, one of the most respected comedy clubs in the country, is still standing as they get ready to earnestly put on a new round of virtual shows via Mint Comedy.

The very first one of these will happen on the first day of the new year at 12PM PT/3PM ET. The line-up is worthy of you being up that early post-NYE with Sean Patton, Dan Soder, Jessica Kirson, Mike Yard, Matthew Broussard, and Cipha Sounds (the sort of line-up that you’d see at the Cellar in the before times)

Tickets for live-stream access are only $7.99 and you can (and should) get them here.

Will Smith Hosted Stand-Up Series “This Joka” Coming to Quibi

(via Deadline)

Quibi was about to tape its own stand-up series at the Hollywood Improv right when this current pandemic shut all live entertainment down for the time being.

Fortunately, there was a stand-up series that had already been shot by Will Smith’s Westbrook Studios several months ago in Las Vegas and that series, called “This Joka”, has found its way to the just-about-to-launch mobile streaming platform Quibi (set to launch next week on Apr. 6th).

Many of our favorite comics that we’ve gotten to see up close in the before times will be featured on this series including:

Baron Vaughn
Chris Estrada
Christi Chiello
Clayton English
Daphnique Springs
David Gborie
Demi Adejuyigbe
George Wallace
Jackie Fabulous
Martin Urbano
Punkie Johnson
Rosebud Baker
Sam Tallent
Shane Torres
Shawn Wasabi
Vanessa Gonzalez

Per Quibi’s platform, episodes won’t be longer than 10 minutes and there are 16 of them ordered, which probably means that each episode will be a showcase set and conversation with the comics line-up. Also, Will Smith hosted all of This Joka and the one and only Lance Bangs directed the whole thing, making this stand-up series just all the more intriguing.

Sean Patton Delivers Another Damn Fine Album with “Scuttlebutt”

Sean Patton is pretty much an unparalleled master of blending stories with riffing into beautiful flights of fancy. He has maintained such a status for us for several years now and, as such, his name really should be showing up way more when it comes to those “best of” lists and on the line-ups for specials at networks/streaming services. Set-by-set, Patton never fails to have us bust up laughing as he did with this latest hour.

Scuttlebutt, his brand new album and follow-up to the brilliant Standard Operating Procedure, furthers all such notions as Patton takes everyone down a winding river of his imagination and his deepest, most vulnerable parts of himself for some truly beautiful, wildly colorful comedy. As with any Sean Patton set, Scuttlebutt is a breathtaking, hysterical journey that you almost won’t believe you went on once it’s over.

So, go get Sean Patton’s Scuttlebutt, fresh off the presses from Helium Records here.

Part of a great comedy cultural exchange between the U.S. and Canada comes around during the JFL Montreal Comedy Festival when JFL also shoots their stand-up showcase series, Funny as Hell.

As past episodes have been streamed plenty on Seeso, Seeso has opted to make the series more known in the States, especially because of its heavy use of U.S. talent, to order a sixth season that’ll offered on NBC’s comedy streaming service.

There will be more names that’ll be added to the series during the festival, but that line-up alone is reason enough to go watch it.
