Pick of the Day: TCB 12 Yr. Anniversary (in LA) 11/5

November 4, 2022
News
anniversary show, Best Actress, chris estrada, guy branum, ian karmel, little secret, los angeles comedy, max beasley, natalie palamides, Rachel Kaly Roz Hernandez, stand up

Just starting from not exactly where open mics where outside of the one coffee shop in Long Beach that we started at to being as central a hub for all the comedy info you need in LA and NYC as can be, 12 years of The Comedy Bureau has been almost indescribable (mostly because pretty much all the work at TCB rests on the back of Jake Kroeger and he doesn’t have that much time to think about 12 years of doing this when there are listings to update).

It seemed prudent that we should celebrate the occasion and we’re doing exactly that this Saturday, Nov. 5th at the ultra cool Little Secret in Hollywood with the brilliant comedic talents of Natalie Palamides, Chris Estrada, Best Actress, Guy Branum, Rachel Kaly Roz Hernandez, Max Beasley, Ian Karmel. Oh yeah, TCB’s very own Jake Kroeger will be taking a slight break from having 200 or more tabs open on his web browser to host the show.

Also, this is the perfect way to party out the end of Daylight Savings Time.

The show is at 8PM. Tickets are $12. Go get ’em here.

Pick of the Day: All Fantasy Everything (in NYC) 12/16

One of the most fun podcasts around, All Fantasy Everything, is back, out-on-the-road, in-person bringing non-sports fantasy draft joy to the whole world. Ian Karmel, Sean Jordan, and David Gborie have really made comedy gold out of pondering what your absolute favorite things are within hyper specific (and sometimes hilariously vague) niches. You have a rollicking, knee-slapping time over the debate of over the Taco Bell drive thru menu or best band names if they weren’t a band and the added bonus of knowing yourself that much better.

There are hundreds of episodes for you to binge on if you’re the uninitiated, but there are two very special live episodes coming to the Bell House in Brooklyn on Fri. Dec. 16th. The early show already sold out, but there’s a late show with tickets still available at $30.57. Make it an early holiday gift and go buy them here before they sell out.

Ian Karmel Thanks Folks for Wedding Presents While Doing a Tight Late Night Set on Weddings

Ian Karmel is such an integral part of The Late Late Show and a force on the podcast he co-hosts, All Fantasy Everything, that you might need a reminder that Karmel is quite the hysterical stand-up comedian. That’s actually the thing that got him to elevated station he’s at now and he hasn’t lost a step while being one of the funniest co-hosts on TV and in your headphones.

This latest late night set from him on last night’s Corden is proof positive. Karmel does one of the best sets on weddings, perfectly observed and written bits sandwiched in between legitimate expressions of gratitude for wedding gifts he has received before his wedding this week.

Please enjoy his set here and make sure you take every chance you can to see Ian live.

Pick of the Day: Lance Bangs Presents (in LA) 9/2

June 28, 2022
News
brandon wardell, Caleb Hearon, david gborie, elysian, fred armisen, girl god, ian karmel, la comedy, lance bangs, moses storm, natalie palamides, reggie watts, stand up comedy

If you Google “Lance Bangs”, you’ll first read that he’s an American Filmmaker. While that’s very true, Bangs is also a curator of the underground, seeking out those thrilling voices, often in and around comedy that you hope to bare witness to at a live comedy and/or music show. Having worked with the likes of Jackass to Tyler the Creator to Marc Maron to Nirvana to George Harrison to John Hodgman to his latest work on Moses Storm’s acclaimed HBO special, Trash White, Bangs is one of the most respected figures behind the scenes.

So, the fact that he’s curating a very special night of comedy at The Elysian come Fri. Sept. 2nd should be something you mark down on your calendar immediately, right after you immediately get tickets.

The line-up features some of the best folks he’s worked with that happen to be some of the best, most clever, most subversive, funny voices in comedy.

That includes:

  • Fred Armisen
  • Reggie Watts
  • Girl God
  • Natalie Palamides
  • Caleb Hearon
  • Moses Storm
  • Brandon Wardell
  • Ian Karmel
  • David Gborie

It’s such a stellar line-up and you can see all of that for only $20. Go get your tickets for Lance Bangs Presents @ The Elysian on 9/2 right here.

The Late Late Show Finally Puts That Cracked-Egg-Is-Your-Brain-on-Drugs Ad In Its Place

Long ago, in the last era of big time anti-drug campaigns, there was one particular ad that suggested that your brain on illegal controlled substances was like an egg being cracked and fried on a pan.

With all the years that have passed, such an ad seems even more ridiculous. Corden’s The Late Late Show reminds us of that and points out what probably happened during the shooting of said ad.

Watch it here.

You Should Be Listening to “All Fantasy Everything” If You Need Some Positivity In Your Life

It’s a hard feat within the realm of comedy to be both positive and being funny at the same time. The crux of so many jokes comes rely on a critical, yet pithy and/or clever angle of the world by the comedian/writer/humorist/etc.

Still, that doesn’t mean that being funny about something that’s good can’t be done. That’s where the podcast All Fantasy Everything comes in.

Wonderful comedian and writer Ian Karmel hosts a fantasy draft like you would for football, but, as the title suggests, for everything else. That includes: Taco Bell menu, moments in songs that give you chills, what you would do with a billion dollars, what fictional character you’d date, movie soundtracks and treating yourself just to name a few. The draft itself has a bit of drama kind of like an actual Fantasy Football draft, but nothing too heavy as the podcast is a round-robin of what and why one loves what they love in a certain category.

Karmel is often joined by David Gborie and Sean Jordan along with great guests who really swing for the fences with their pick. They’re 72 episodes in, and, just this past weekend, did a live episode at SXSW, which should give you plenty of reason to binge All Fantasy Everything. Do so here.

Competitive Erotic Fan Fiction to Be Featured on Seeso

It’s about time this happened.

One of the many new, exciting things that are happening at NBC’s comedy streaming service, Seeso, is a thing called The Comedy Show Show, which will feature plenty of different formats of comedy shows that have grown over the last few years.

Bryan Cook’s Competitive Erotic Fan Fiction is a prime example of such a format with comedians writing erotic fiction of a pop culture subject of their choice or by random. Having toured the country and becoming a hit podcast, it’s only logical that it would get to be featured in a series at some point.

So, a taping for Seeso’s Comedy Show Show will take place at the Competitive Erotic Fan Fiction’s current home, The Virgil, on Sunday, April 17th at 8PM (doors are at 7:30PM).

The stellar line-up features past winners including such notable comedians as:

Moshe Kasher (Netflix special “Live in Oakland”)
Eliza Skinner (@Midnight, writer ‘The Late Late Show’)
Ben Roy (Star/Co-creator ‘Those Who Can’t’ on TruTv)
Dave Hill (Author, ‘Tasteful Nudes,’ Host ‘The God Damn Dave Hill Show’ on WFMU)
Ian Karmel (Conan, writer ‘The Late Late Show’)
Guy Branum (writer, ‘Another Period,’ ‘The Mindy Project’)
Andrés du Bouchet (Writer/performer on Conan)
Jackie Kashian (Conan, album ‘This Will Make An Excellent Horcrux’)
Solomon Georgio (Conan, Viceland)

The taping is free to attend, which should give you more incentive than you already have to go to this.

Blizzard or not, you should go watch this right now.

Years ago, Paul Scheer and Rob Huebel rented a giant bus and taped an entire comedy special for their live show Crash Test while driving around LA. They had anyone from Aziz Ansari to Natasha Leggero to Thomas Lennon/Robert Ben Garant to Ian Karmel and much more join them/run into them while the special was happening.

While it was only available to stream after paying for quite some time, you can now watch the whole Crash Test special over at CC.com.

So, go do that.

In addition to Emily Heller’s Good For Her, Kill Rock Stars is also putting another great comedy album, Ian Karmel’s 9.2 on Pitchfork.

This is Ian’s very first comedy album and it leaves a damn fine impression of Karmel and his stand-up. The hour weaves through every bit of Ian and gets quite personal, but Ian’s upbeat spirit and colorful attention to detail makes for one fun ride. Certainly, we think music tastemakers Pitchfork should entertain a special case for their rating system as the title of this album subtly suggests.

9.2 on Pitchfork comes out tomorrow, but if you’re really hankering for it, you can pre-order it from Kill Rock Stars here.

James Adomian as Sen. Bernie Sanders

Heather Anne Campbell as Sec. Hillary Clinton
Seth Morris as Gov. Lincoln Chafee
Fortune Feimster as Donald Trump
Ian Karmel as Gov. Chris Christie

Chris Schleicher as Gov. Martin O’Malley
Daniel Van Kirk as Gov. Jeb Bush
Jerry Minor as Dr. Ben Carson
Mike Still as Gov. Mike Huckabee
