Comedy Central is doing another round, their 10th season in fact, of their short form digital stand-up series, Comedy Central Stand Up Featuring in LA. As the Satellite has sadly closed its doors awhile ago, CC will be going to another hip venue in LA on Tues. Mar. 1st, the even more kitschy Lodge Room in Highland Park (the place where you can catch Paul F. Tompkins on a somewhat regular basis these days).

Also, of course, they have rows upon rows upon rows of great handpicked comedians that, if you’re reading this, you’ve might have come to know and love by seeing them making the rounds in LA, NYC, and elsewhere. This gorgeous line-up will include (over 3 shows):

6PM: Brittany Schmitt, Mike Mulloy, Jes Tom, Jamel Johnson, Brandon Wardell & Chloe Radcliffe

8PM: Daniel Weingarten, Giulia Rozzi, Niles Abston, Felonius Munk, Mo Welch & Chloe Hillard

10PM: Danielle Perez, Joey Avery, Ali Macofsky, Sean Grant, Katrina Davis & Caleb Hearon

The show is FREE (almost nothing is free at the Lodge Room, FYI) with RSVP to 21+ with proof of vaccination. Go get your tickets right this second at theblacklistnyc.com/ccsufla.

The Comedy Bureau Field Report Ep. 83: Mike Mulloy & Growing Grassroots

Building your own thing in the thick of a sprawling comedy scene is beyond a tall order. If that thing is a weekly comedy show that expands into an entire brand that now has branched out to the thriving comedy scene in Denver, it’s even more impressive.

That’s exactly what one Mike Mulloy has done with Faded Comedy over the last few years, tirelessly working to make a cornerstone Friday stand-up show (one of the hardest days to pull off a weekly indie comedy show in LA, FYI) and branching out to do more shows, more cities, and do so with the comedians he digs. Faded managed to stay virtual through lockdown and keep going with a virtual presence with their weekly Happy Hours on Twitch and live-streaming in-person shows. Mulloy and TCB’s Jake Kroeger go into how Mike has carved out this niche in LA comedy as well as do “hot” (and some actually hot) takes on more Chappelle “The Closer” non-sense, the Joan Rivers biopic getting nixed, and more.

Pick of the Day: Arts & Crafts Comedy (in LA) 8/22

Though you might have seen a lot of shows get postponed or outright cancelled this week in LA due to the rise in COVID-19 cases (and breakthrough infections of fully vaccinated people), there is plenty of stuff to look forward to next month as LA’s wide swath of shows continue to return, step-by-step.

One of the latest shows to announce its return is Arts & Crafts Comedy, which has delightfully been marrying the visual arts with stand-up comedy for years around LA. Hosts Nick Skardarasy and Jon Zucker set a splendid tone for the evening where stand-ups will get some sort of artistic interpretation of their stand-up in a drawing, sculpture, artistic creation of some kind from an esteemed artist.

This first show back since lockdown will feature seasoned illustrator Charlie Hankin (half of the great sketch group Good Cop Great Cop) who has gotten plenty of work featured in The New Yorker. Hankin will be making art inspired a lovely handful of great stand-ups (Laurie Kilmartin, Will Miles, Ever Mainard, Langston Kerman, Savannah Manhattan, and Mike Mulloy).

The first of Arts & Crafts Comedy of 2021 is set for Sun. Aug. 22nd at 8PM PT at Rita House. Tickets are $10 and you can (and very much should) get them here.

Pick of the Day: Faded 7/9 (in LA)

When it came to Friday nights in LA, one of the best spots to be for live stand-up comedy was tucked away through several hallways at an acting studio on Melrose. That was where Faded Comedy had finally made their new home and was packing in crowds with truly many of the city’s best stand-ups (and whoever was great that happen to be in town). The Faded Comedy gang of Mike Mulloy, David Gborie, Sean Jordan, Zak Toscani, and Bri Pruett corralled a great weekly stand-up show no matter where it was (originally at an art supply store, then a belly dancing studio).

Now, they’re back at the Lounge on Melrose right where they left off from March 2020 and they’re doing limited capacity with proof of vaccination upon their return, scheduled for Fri. July 9th. Tickets are $15 and are being sold in pairs or groups of four. Thus, you should go get your tickets right when then go on sale this Fri., Jun. 25th at 12PM PT.

Faded, one of LA’s favorite indie stand-up shows, especially on Fridays, is back for 2020 with a whole new location. They started in the supply room of an art supplies story, then moved to a belly dancing studio, and now, are moving to their most “conventional” venue thus far, the speakeasy-ish The Lounge on Melrose (7551 Melrose Ave.).

So, join Mike Mulloy, David Gborie, Sean Jordan, Bri Pruett, and Zak Toscani and their always stacked secret line-ups for a nice price of $5 in advance (limited quantities available) and their normal cost of $10.

The first Faded @ The Lounge on Melrose will be this Fri. Jan. 10th at 8PM (doors at 7:30PM). Go get tickets here.
