TCB Debriefing 10/17/23: Debra DiGiovanni, Katherine Blanford Tour, Demi Adejuyigbe Halloween Costumes, Nate Bargatze,

October 17, 2023
News
debra digiovanni, demi adejuyigbe, don't tell comedy, katherine blanford, nate bargatze, snl

1. Debra DiGiovanni demonstrates why most comedians these days opt to not follow her if at all possible in this exclusive Don’t Tell Comedy set. Her rhythm, exuberance, and irrefutable command of the mic/stage makes her a force to be reckoned with/throughly enjoyed via copious amounts of laughter. Please enjoy it over and over here.

2. Even though we’re so glad that the marvelous Katherine Blanford is in LA now, we are thrilled that the rest of the country is also getting blessed with her sweet and crafty comedy stylings. Dates below and tickets at katherineblanford.com.

3. Demi Adejuyigbe has given the assignment for Halloween Costumes, which, honestly, could and should be themes for next year’s Met Gala.

4. Nate Bargatze is set to host the 10/28 episode and we have a feeling his monologue will probably be one of the best the show has had in recent memory.

5. We’ll leave you with this: We’re all done with Twitter, right? It’s Threads now? Yeah, it’s Threads.

Please Enjoy Jon Dore as Comedy’s HR Rep on “Humour Resources”

There has has to be a lot of ingenuity in making any sort of content throughout the pandemic (that isn’t over yet). Necessity being the mother of invention has led to tons of Zoom comedy, but also given us some genuinely funny shows such as Baited with Ziwe on Instagram Live.

Another such show that attempted to deal with the creative conundrum of COVID-19 and very much succeeded is the new CBC comedy series, Humour Resources starring Jon Dore and created by Adam Brodie, Dave Derewlany, and Dore. With the obstacle of so many things having to rely on the front facing cameras for any sort of human interaction, Dore stars as an alternate universe version of himself that has retired from stand-up comedy and chooses to become an HR representative for all of “Comedy” (if all of comedy was housed under one umbrella corporation).

The show is centered around Dore having HR meetings of all shapes and sizes with beloved Canadian and American comedians including Sarah Silverman, Courtney Gilmour, Dave Merheje, Nikki Glaser, Casey Corbin, The Lucas Brothers, Tom Green, Ronny Chieng, DeAnne Smith, Scott Thompson, Sophie Buddle, Eric Andre, Debra DiGiovanni, Arthur Simeon, Rory Scovel, Kyle Brownrigg, Aisha Brown, and Reggie Watts. Even though it’s technically an HR meeting, this feels like Dore’s über clever version of how he would do a late night panel interview if he were given the slot for a talk show.

Thus, there’s a delightful mix of The Office and Conan throughout, especially since Dore has to deal with a quietly chaotic suburban home life while trying to maintain the appearance of a professional member of a Human Resources department. For awhile, if you were in the U.S., you couldn’t really watch it freely, put Just For Laughs is graciously streaming episodes for free on their YouTube channel, releasing them one by one.

At the accommodation of your very busy schedule, you can (and should) enjoy Humour Resources here.

At this side of the pandemic with a good deal of live, in-person comedy happening every night, the prospect of tuning into virtual comedy has to be something really special. Fortunately, Sara Schaefer’s night of stand-up done completely in miniatures at her beautifully crafted miniature comedy club “The Haha Hole” is very much that very, very special thing that’s worth going back on Zoom for.

Sara has another Evening at the Haha Hole lined up for this Thursday, Sept. 23rd via Nowhere Comedy on Zoom, with another dive into our conception of what a comedy club is or might be as well as some really great stand-up, performed in miniature of course, from the likes of Naomi Ekperigin, Danielle Perez, and Debra DiGiovanni.

Do not miss out on this one-of-a-kind virtual comedy show no matter where you are in the world. This edition of Evening at the Haha Hole is set for 9/23 at 6PM PT/9PM ET and tickets are $15. All the early bird tickets already sold out, so you best snag your tickets pretty soon.

As the prospect of travel to more than wherever you can drive in your car becomes better and better, we fully expect to see comedy festivals pop up in some pretty exotic locales. Just For Laughs is already leading the way by taking themselves all the way on down from Canada to the sunny beaches of Cancún, Mexico.

From Nov. 3rd-7th, Jim Jefferies, Nicole Byer, Tom Segura, Nikki Glaser, Ron Funches, Debra DiGiovanni, The Goddamn Comedy Jam, and more will be taking over to do comedy shows for what we normally thought of just as spring break destination. In addition to shows, there will be a whole package that provides 5-star resort accommodations, parties of all kinds, and other JFL exclusive events.

The early bird package prices for everything are starting at $859, but note that you will be fully refunded if the festivities get rescheduled due to COVID-19 (as that pesky pandemic is still not over).

Go get more details/book a package here.

A line-up of Debra DiGiovanni, MK Paulsen, Kimberly Clark, Atsuko Okatsuka, Troy Walker, Brad Wenzel, and hosts Lynn Maleh and DJ Paul Antonio is such a fantastic, wide-ranging, hysterical collection of comedians from wire-to-wire that’s very much worth good money, end of story. Just take our word for it if you’re worried about what their “credits” might be.

This coming Sunday, April 18th, you’ll get a chance to see this crackling line-up from wherever you are during this pandemic and you get the added bonus of supporting the critical work of the LLS (Leukemia and Lymphoma Society) that has been fighting blood cancer around the world since 1949 via Chelsea Derkacz’s Woman of the Year Fundraiser.

Laughs for LLS will go live on Sun. Apr. 18th at 5PM PT/8PM ET. Tickets are going for $20 and you can (and very much should) go get them here.

The wondrous and hysterical Canadian transplant Debra DiGiovanni and TCB’s Jake Kroeger have quite the hopeful chat about her numerous gigs doing live-streaming comedy in the last several weeks and how she might specifically imagine to take the stage again and what that might really look like (especially for someone who has played comedy venues of all sorts of sizes). Also, they touch upon the tragic closure of the Upright Citizens Brigade in NYC, the rescheduling of some major comedy festivals, as well as what’s new and/or noteworthy in comedy this week.

Follow Debra @debradg on Instagram & @debradigiovanni on Twitter. Tune in to her daily Instagram Live check-in show Afternoon Delight with Zach Noe Towers at 4PM PT via her Instagram handle. “The Jay Larson and Friends Christmas Special” Gives You Two-Christmas-Specials-for-One

When it comes to making a holiday TV special, you could just have a bunch of great comedians/storytellers share their holiday memories/do bits (and some stripped down version of a Christmas standard) or you could have jaunty recipes and tips for the perfect holiday party.

Thanks to Jay Larson, we could have our Mid-Century Modern Gingerbread House (a real thing that Larson makes in this special) and eat it too (i.e. enjoy the comedic stylings of Jesus Trejo, Debra DiGiovanni, Dan Soder, Lara Beitz, and Nick Thune and music of Suzanne Santo). Always the crafty, clever one, Larson made an all-in-one sort of half-hour holiday special that celebrates (and subtly roasts) this time of year.

Please enjoy it at your leisure, for free, here.

The backroom of the Blue Rooster Art Supplies was poised to be the heir apparent to Nerdmelt @ Meltdown. Alas, such a fate was not to come to pass as construction and expansion will prohibit the space from being a live venue.

Thus, Faded, On Deck, live tapings of All Fantasy Everything, and more will be moving on to a new home in the Mid City Arts Center next month.

However, before they go, they’re throwing a big farewell this Saturday in the form of an all female comedy marathon featuring 30 of LA’s best female comedians telling one joke. Signature Drink, another Blue Rooster show alum, and its hosts Courtney Karwal and Megan Gailey will be presiding over what should be quite the swan song.

Seriously, this would be a show that you shouldn’t miss without the whole prospect of a venue closing. As this is a living wake of sorts, it’s even more imperative that you enjoy yourself at a damn fine stand-up show.

Best get your tickets here quick.

Steph Tolev and Debra DiGiovanni are two of the funniest comedians exported from Toronto to LA in recent memory. Wherever they take the stage around town, they’ve always crushed it by unapologetically being themselves on stage.

So, this Comedy Central digital series Steph and Deb takes a cue from that and fully realize some of their best bits and stories. Get into it here.

This comedy debate show, Straw Men, really pushes the envelope with how hilariously childish you can get in a debate and it’s all the more brilliant for it. The catharsis you’ll get from seeing adults resort to name calling in debates over the weirdest topics is just so damn fun.

So, don’t miss this latest edition of Straw Men, which has a killer line-up as well. Go get your tickets here.

Ever since Debra DiGiovanni arrived in LA, she has destroyed stage after stage often prompting many other comedians on the line-up to not want to follow her. Debra’s undeniable charm and rapid fire cadence pretty much has every watching her busting up from the get go. She’s absolutely one of the best folks to come down from Canada

Lady Jazz, her latest release fresh off the presses from AST Records, showcases these abilities and more in a big theater and definitely is worth a listen (probably more than a few actually).

While she wildly popular in Canada, she is now making headway stateside having made her way through a few rounds of Last Comic Standing and, as of last night, had her American late night debut on Conan.

Please watch and enjoy Debra like we’ve had the pleasure of doing so over the last couple of years.
