December 12, 2023
News
bell house, fundraiser, gaza, medglobal, nyc comedy, stand up comedy

If you were wondering if and when there was going to be a humanitarian aid fundraiser comedy show for those in crisis in Gaza, wonder no longer. The Bell House is stepping up to host one such big fundraiser for MedGlobal’s Gaza Emergency Appeal that is wholly dedicated to addressing the dire lack of and diminishing hospital resources in the region due to the war.

Simply called a Comedy Fundraiser for Gaza, the evening will be summoning the comedy talents of Katie Boyle, Mohanad Elshieky, Maeve Higgins, Joyelle Nicole Johnson, Phoebe Robinson, Sabeen Sadiq, Nataly Aukar, and Fareeha Khan for a damn fine evening of NYC comedy’s best and brightest.

Comedy Fundraiser for Gaza is set for Sun. Jan. 28th at 8PM. Tickets are $50.90 and you best go get them here.

Pick of the Day: All for Armenia Live Comedy Fundraiser (in LA) 11/3

October 20, 2023
News
armenia, benefit show, fundraiser, los angeles comedy, stand up comedy, ucb

The world isn’t technically at war, but it’s hard to feel like that the whole of the planet is even remotely close to being at peace. One could spin a globe with eyes closed and probably land on a location rife with violent conflict. As such, supporting any and all of the humanitarian aid you can, wherever it may be, is crucial.

That’s why James Adomian is leading a benefit for All for Armenia at UCB on Fri. Nov. 3rd at 10pm, since the horror in Armenia perpetrated by Azerbaijan still continues with ethnic cleansing of Armenians living in the surrendered territory of Artsakh (though you wouldn’t know it from the news).

Joining Adomian is a very stacked line-up of Reggie Watts, Phil Hendrie, Chris Estrada, Alyssa Limperis, Mary Basmadjian, and Nate Craig all for the nice price of $15 (right now). 100% of ticket sales go to All for Armenia.

Go get tix here before they inevitably sell out and, if you’re feeling generous, directly donate to All for Armenia.

Pick of the Day: Secret Movie Club Theater Presents A “Holiday Special” Fundraiser for Vidiots (in LA) 12/8

November 30, 2022
News
dtla, fundraiser, los angeles comedy, secret movie club, vidiots

It has been a long time coming, but the reimagining of Vidiots as a full fledged rep movie theater in Eagle Rock will be coming soon. That said, they still need some help leading up to giving the Eagle Theater a facelift and opening and the good folks at The Secret Movie Club in DTLA are doing a very special screening of a certain infamous holiday special to raise some money for them.

For those that pine for the days of Cinefamily (before we all knew what was going on behind closed doors), Vidiots is poised to fill the roll of ultra exclusive screenings and events to Eastsiders in LA that feel like making the trek to the New Bev or Brain Dead Studios will take all of their energy for a whole day.

So, make a trek to the Arts District next Thurs. Dec. 8th at 7:30PM PT to enjoy a truly awful holiday special with a group of like minded folks. Oh, how about that? Their little flyer is using a similar font to Star Wars. What a festive coincidence…

Pick of the Day: Hugo Let the Dogs Out! (in LA) 10/6

October 5, 2022
News
amber rollo, andrew michaan, demetri martin, el cid, fundraiser, gareth reynolds, hugo soto martinez, joe mande, josh androsky, los angeles comedy, matt christman, megan koester, will menaker

The midterm elections are just a month away and it’s crucial to be aware of what is at stake (and that you should really vote, maybe even do so early).

With that in mind, one thing you could do leading up to Election Day, Tues. Nov. 8th, 2022 is go to a comedy show fundraiser Hugo Let the Dogs Out! for a choice progressive candidate for LA’s CD13, Hugo Soto-Martinez, at El Cid on Thurs. Oct. 6th with doors opening at 7PM featuring the comedy stylings of some folks you might have heard of including Joe Mande, Demetri Martin, Gareth Reynolds, Will Menaker, Matt Christman, Andrew Michaan, Megan Koester, and Derek & Dril along with hosts Amber Rollo and Josh Androsky.

You don’t have to pay to enjoy such a spoil of comedy riches (note that El Cid has a 2 item min.), but they’ll obviously be taking donations for Hugo’s campaign. If you can’t make the show, you can donate to Hugo at hugo2022.com.

Pick of the Day: The Tops! A Top Surgery Fundraiser for Ever Mainard (in LA) 1/7

December 27, 2021
News
alysia brown, danielle perez, ever mainard, fundraiser, la comedy, libbie higgins, Meg Stalter, naomi ekperigin, nori reed, solomon georgio, stand up comedy, tony soto, top surgery

The weird week between Christmas and NYE has begun and on top of there being little going on and the little that was going on getting canceled due to Omicron, one has to wonder if there’s any hope to bring into 2022.

Well, one thing you could do is bring hope to the hysterical Ever Mainard and their upcoming top surgery so they can fully realize themselves as the amazing non-binary person and splendid comedian that they are. They’ve got a massively stacked line-up for their The Tops! A Top Surgery Fundraiser for Ever Mainard slated for Fri. Jan. 7th at 8PM at The Elysian with the likes of:

  • Meg Stalter
  • Libbie Higgins
  • Nori Reed
  • Naomi Ekperigin
  • Solomon Georgio
  • Lindsay Adams
  • Danielle Perez
  • Silver Lake Icon, Tony Soto
  • Alysia Brown

Ever will be presiding over hosting duties and it should be a good time (fingers crossed that it still gets to happen). In any case, you should buy a ticket to support Ever (oh yeah, there will be a bake sale to boot) for $20 and you can do so right here right now.

Pick of the Day: Community Power: Hugo Soto-Martinez Fundraiser (in LA) 11/16

November 12, 2021
News
andrea more, atwater village, club tee gee, dan mintz, demi adejuyigbe, fundraiser, hugo soto martinez, james adomian, kate berlant, los angeles comedy, sandy honig, stand up comedy, steve hernandez

Many of the very best line-ups for comedy shows often come with the purpose of raising money for a worthy cause. That was definitely true all of last summer as gala level line-ups assembled on Zoom to raise money for mutual aid, undocumented relief, and local representative campaigns.

That will be true yet again as Hugo Soto-Martinez is raising money for a run at LA City Council (quick reminder that two LA City Council members were indicted on federal charges in the last year or so and we need good folks in those seats) as someone who is a more fair, equitable, and safe life for Angelenos. Thus, he has been doing pop-up comedy fundraisers as of late.

This latest edition of Community Power will feature the stellar comedy stylings of:

Dan Mintz (Tina from Bob’s Burgers!)
Kate Berlant
James Adomian
Demi Adejuyigbe
Sandy Honig
Steve Hernandez
Andrea More

That’s beyond a stacked show on Tues. Nov. 16th at 7PM PT at Club Tee Gee and one that you pretty much shouldn’t miss for any reason. Tickets start at $10 and sales all go towards Hugo Soto-Martinez for City Council 2022!

Go get them here before they sell out (Tee Gee is a beautiful and very intimate venue, so space is limited, FYI).

Pick of the Day: Laughs for LLS 4/18

April 14, 2021
News
atsuko okatsuka, brad wenzel, debra digiovanni, fundraiser, kimberly clark, leukemia lymphoma society, mk paulsen, Troy Walker

A line-up of Debra DiGiovanni, MK Paulsen, Kimberly Clark, Atsuko Okatsuka, Troy Walker, Brad Wenzel, and hosts Lynn Maleh and DJ Paul Antonio is such a fantastic, wide-ranging, hysterical collection of comedians from wire-to-wire that’s very much worth good money, end of story. Just take our word for it if you’re worried about what their “credits” might be.

This coming Sunday, April 18th, you’ll get a chance to see this crackling line-up from wherever you are during this pandemic and you get the added bonus of supporting the critical work of the LLS (Leukemia and Lymphoma Society) that has been fighting blood cancer around the world since 1949 via Chelsea Derkacz’s Woman of the Year Fundraiser.

Laughs for LLS will go live on Sun. Apr. 18th at 5PM PT/8PM ET. Tickets are going for $20 and you can (and very much should) go get them here.

Pick of the Day: StandUP for Autism 4/24

April 5, 2021
News
41presidnetfun, ali clayton, autism, fundraiser, irene morales, kirk smith

April is World Autism Month and, as such, there is a great comedy live-stream coming up to celebrate any and all on the Autism spectrum.

Presented by Asemblco, Ali Clayton and her best friend/man with autism, Bradley will be joined by other wonderful comedians that are a loud and proud part of the Autism community. The line-up for this exclusive live-stream called StandUP for Autism will include Ron Funches, Irene Morales, and Kirk Smith.

Also, the live-stream will wonderfully double as a fundraiser in support of autism awareness. StandUP for Autism is set to go live on Sat. Apr. 24th at 4PM PT/7PM ET. Tickets are $12 and you can (and very much should) go get them here.

Pick of the Day: Riffing for the Georgia Runoffs 12/18

December 8, 2020
News
dulce sloan, fundraiser, georgia runoffs, jon ossoff, patton oswalt, Sarah Cooper, sarah silverman

One of the final chapters of the 2020 General Election comes down to a run-off Senate race in Georgia between Jon Ossoff and Sen. David Perdue. As such, there will be accompanying benefit shows where comedic heavy hitters join in to raise money for the fate of the U.S. Senate.

Riffing for the Georgia Runoffs is another such comedy live-stream, brought to you by The Comedy Resistance, that aims to support Ossoff to unseat the incumbent and conservative Perdue. Thus far, this show has got Sarah Silverman, Patton Oswalt, and Dulcé Sloan and we’re sure that many more very special guests will join the show as Fri. Dec. 18th 5PM PT/8PM ET, the night of the live-stream, gets closer.

You can get access and support The Comedy Resistance’s fundraiser for the Georgia Runoffs for $15 right here.

Pick of the Day: Ground Game LA Winter Fundraiser 12/10

December 2, 2020
News
adam conover, comedy livestream, d'arcy carden, fatima iobal zubair, fundraiser, ground game la, Ira Madison, konstantine anthony, Mal Blum, nicole byer, nithya raman, quinta brunson, rhea butcher

The election is well past us now and Biden is going to be 46th POTUS, which means Trump won’t thankfully be President anymore. In LA, a lot of progressive measures/candidates got voted in. Yet, as you might very well know, there is plenty of more organizing, strategizing, mobilizing that has to be done to actually affect real change.

Ground Game LA has been a great mutual aid LA org that will be crucial going forward in instituting and sustaining said change. Thus, they’re putting on a virtual Winter Fundraiser that will not only include appearances by newly elected LA councilwoman Nithya Raman, but a stacked row of LA comedy favorites such as D’arcy Carden, Ira Madison, Quinta Brunson, Adam Conover, Mal Blum, Nicole Byer, and Rhea Butcher.

Some of the best comedy live-streams have been benefit fundraisers, especially when Nithya has been involved, and this Ground Game LA Winter Fundraiser should be no different. The live-stream is set for Dec. 10th at 7PM PT/10PM ET and donations will be accepted for access (you can even stream for free if you’d like).

Get more details and access here.

Please Help Save The Bob Baker Marionette Theater

November 19, 2020
News
bob baker marionette theater, fundraiser

You’ve very likely seen that the enduring pandemic has taken down live venues around the country, one-by-one as the months wear on in lockdown (especially with another full scale lockdown looming). UCB in NYC, The Creek & The Cave, Cap City Comedy Club, and Improv Olympic have unfortunately made the grave decision to close down for good as the cost of trying to weather the storm and re-opening was just far too costly.

The Bob Baker Marionette Theater could be another such place that will have to close without direct support (and that doesn’t seem to be coming from the government, like it should be, any time soon). For decades, The Bob Baker Marionette Theater has been one of the more magical, hidden gems of LA that housed famous puppeteer Bob Baker and all of his creations. All sorts of puppet, marionette, and variety shows have been put up at the theater to the delight of so many folks of all ages.

Before the pandemic started creeping in, The Bob Baker Marionette Theater was just getting used to their shiny, brand new home in Eagle Rock. It would be a travesty if building up their new theater and moving across town was all for naught just because of COVID-19.

So, they’re looking to raise funds to keep them afloat into 2021 (and hopefully longer). Their goal is $365K and they’re already almost a third of the way there. Please consider keeping one of LA’s treasures around and support the Bob Baker Marionette Theater here.

Pick of the Day: Make My Day with Josh Gondelman 12/3

November 17, 2020
News
emmy blotnick, fair fight, fundraiser, gary gulman, josh gondelman, make my day, voting rights

While the election is over and Trump is due for a harsh exit, the air still hangs slightly heavy as to what to do or what will come next, especially as COVID-19 still plagues our lives quite literally. For now, there are still small things you can do, even just make a single person’s day better in some way, shape, or fashion.

Also, you can watch comedians attempt to do that very thing for one of the kindest comedians around, Josh Gondelman, for a special live version of Gondelman’s podcast, Make My Day. The podcast indeed has comedians, in a game show format, try to cheer Gondelman up. 2020 has made that quite a feat no matter who it is, but it can be a whole hell of a lot of fun watching comedians, some of the most critical people on the planet, do it for other comedians.

There will be a very special live-stream edition of Make My Day on Thurs. Dec. 3rd at 5PM PT/8PM ET with the likes of other very kind hearted comedians Gary Gulman and Emmy Blotnick joining in the quest to cheer Josh up. Littlefield NYC will be virtually hosting and donations ($10 suggested) will be accepted for live-stream access. Also, a portion of donations will go towards Fair Fight, an org fiercely dedicated to defending voting rights.

Please go get your tickets for what might be one of the more heartwarming comedy live-streams you’ve seen in awhile and support a crucial cause.

Famed horror comedy troupe Helltrap Nightmare did so much leading up to this most recent election in support of local candidates and organizations. Thankfully, their work is continuing on with intersecting affecting change on a local level and putting on extravaganzas of live-stream comedy fundraisers.

This Friday, Nov. 13th, Helltrap Nightmare is partnering with LA local orgs NOLYMPICS and LA Tenants Union to support the Food Not Rent fund for their latest show. Rental assistance for Angelenos has simply not been enough during this pandemic, especially with the end of it continuing to be uncertain and this is great way to give relief to many vulnerable folks at this time.

Slated to perform for this Food Not Rent live-stream are: John Early, Kate Berlant, Everything Is Terrible!, Julio Torres, True Anon’s Bruce Belden, Liz Franczak, Seth Bogart, Jeremy Levick, Rajat Suresh,  Nick Ciarelli, Brad Evans, Claywoman, Ian Sweet, Naomidrome, Lou Wilson, Thu Tran, Anna Seregina, Mister Wallace, Drac and the Swamp Rats, and more with hosts Meg Stalter and Sarah Squirm!

This week, you’ve got a chance to not only go to a drive-in theater for one of the better screenings that we’ve come across during quarantine, but you’ll be able to support a very good and crucial cause.

Oh yeah, there will be an exclusive pre-recorded Q&A with EP/director Hiro Murai and EP/writer Stefani Robinson following the screening of Episodes 3, 5, 6, and 8 of season 2 AKA Atlanta: Robbin’ Season.

The Yard Theater in LA was just getting on its feet with building out its live programming schedule featuring comedy, music, theater, etc. just before lockdown started. They had plenty of classes and open mics as well and were poised, under the guidance of one John Ennis, to return this space (The Yard Theater used to be another multi-purpose variety venue called The Fake Gallery, FYI) to being a beloved, go-to indie venue.
You already know the story from there when March of this year came around and as we are in our sixth months of all venues being dark in LA, The Yard Theater is putting together one hell of a live-stream fundraiser to keep the ability to reopen in the future.
Slated for The Yard Theater Fundraiser Fundstacular are:

The Pixies’ Black Francis
Erica Rhodes
Jon Huck
Mark Fite
Ashley Ray
Amrita Dhaliwal

The latest star-studded comedy fundraiser is Americares’ COVID Is No Joke that will air LIVE on covidisnojoke.org and Americares YouTube channel at 5PM PT/8PM ET on Fri. May 1st.

COVID Is No Joke will be a jam-packed hour of a comedy variety live-stream spanning stand-up, stories, sketches, etc. from the likes of:

Well, the block which used to house Meltdown Comics/Nerdmelt Showroom and currently houses the lovely indie comedy theater/school The Ruby LA is being torn down into turned into condos (probably high priced with commercial space on the first floor as is the trend currently in LA).

They have to be out of 7518 W. Sunset Blvd. by Nov. 30th and they’ll need your help in moving to keep the spirit of the great all-inclusive feminist-led theater alive.

We’ll let the folks at The Ruby LA tell you a bit more.

Yes, The Comedy Bureau will have officially served the LA comedy scene for 7 years at the end of this month. That’s 56 years in dog years and (probably 70 in “bureau years”?)

This time, we actually took enough of a break to remind ourselves that we should put on a show (and actually try to make some money doing so).

As you can see from this scrawled upon napkin straight from the very desk of TCB itself, it ought to be a really good time. Also, there will be a raffle that includes fancy enamel pins, our album (more on that later), etc.

You can get tickets now for $10 or $15 cash at door. Get tickets, more details (that are more legible) here.
