Get Your First Look at Mark Duplass and Sterling K. Brown in a Gentler(?) Post-Apocalyptic Dramedy, “Biosphere”

March 27, 2023
News

For very apparent reasons these days, the post-apocalypse is one of pop culture’s favorite themes. Whether it be any iteration of zombies or nuclear fallout or asteroids or Thanos, etc. etc. the fascination with what to do after the world ends is undeniable.

Though, it doesn’t all have to be such fire and brimstone/doom and gloom and, like any genre/sub-genre, there can be a less explosive/gore-filled imagining of what being the last people on earth might be like. That seems to be the goal of Mel Eslyn and Mark Duplass‘ upcoming feature, Biosphere, starring Duplass and Sterling K. Brown. It’s not quite the out-and-out comedy of the Will Forte vehicle of Last Man on Earth or, as it’s set in an glass-and-steel-sealed structure, that similarly named 90s comedy, Bio-Dome, but rather a mysterious dramedy that sees the last two men trying to survive in a shiny cage and figure out what’s next for them/humanity. It also seems like part of a slow roll out of minimalist movies made during the pandemic, which has been a nice change of pace from studio tentpoles that have dominated multiplexes whether people are actually going to watch them or not.

Take a gander at what fun mysteries might come from the genre-bending Biosphere in the teaser, just released today from IFC Films, then look for a release sometime this July.

It was our hope that the biggest and brightest names in comedy would be coming out to do big fundraiser in the fight against COVID-19. Indeed, they have and continued to do so.

The latest star-studded comedy fundraiser is Americares’ COVID Is No Joke that will air LIVE on covidisnojoke.org and Americares YouTube channel at 5PM PT/8PM ET on Fri. May 1st.

COVID Is No Joke will be a jam-packed hour of a comedy variety live-stream spanning stand-up, stories, sketches, etc. from the likes of:

Elizabeth Banks, Ike Barinholtz, Jack Black and Tenacious D, Wayne Brady, D’Arcy Carden, Kristin Chenoweth, Tom Cotter, Mackenzie Davis, Mark Duplass, Will Ferrell, Gal Gadot, Kyle Gass, Linda Hamilton, Chelsea Handler, Mindy Kaling, Kerri Louise, Jonathan Mangum, Patton Oswalt, Natalia Reyes, Adam Scott, Finn Straley, Paige Weldon, Jenny Yang and more with actor/director/producer and Americares own Tony Goldwyn set to host.

That line-up really spans so many different corners of comedy and even includes names of comedians that we really dig that you ought to know going forward.

The funds raised will go to providing essential equipment and support (including mental health) for frontline health workers here in the U.S. and across the globe. $100K worth of donations has already been guaranteed FYI.

You can support Americares now or during the event by making a donation on americares.org or by texting “JOKE” to 20222 to make a $25 donation.

By now, you ought to expect the unexpected with The Duplass Brothers’ HBO anthology series that bends genre, tone, etc. all in the confines of one room.

This upcoming third season should prove no different as you can see in the trailer. Also, you might dig that featured in the cast will be Arturo Castro, Paul F. Tompkins (perhaps a vintage one w/o facial hair), Sam Richardson (with an almost Detroiters-like moment), Luke Wilson, and Steve Little

If you’re on board, get ready to set sail when the new season premieres Fri. Sept. 13th on HBO.

Netflix Secures Worldwide Rights to Next Four Movies from The Duplass Brothers

We wondering what The Duplass Brothers were up to after having a long dalliance with television over at HBO.

With Netflix’s ability to release a movie simultaneously in well-over 100 territories, don’t be surprised to see more and more indie auteurs, especially in the comedy space, find their way to Netflix.

By the way, one of these films includes a bromance comedy with made-up sports starring Ray Romano, which definitely has our interest peaked.

As The Duplass Brothers first Sundance short film that got that attention was shot as lo fi as possible with no crew and in one day, you might know that some of Jay and Mark Duplass’ best work comes out of having restrictions.

With their upcoming HBO anthology series, they have a lot more resources at their disposal, but made sure to stay true to their roots by imposing a handful of rules in making and shooting each episode. Based off how the show looks and feels already, we think this was probably a pretty good call on their part.

See what the rules are here, then look for the series premiere of Room 104 on July 28th.

It would seem anthology series have never been more popular than they are now and The Duplass Brothers are going to take their crack at it with Room 104 on HBO.

The show, which seems to have some hints of Twin Peaks, is centered through one, supposedly average motel room following several different characters and their offbeat lives. Get a taste of it with this very first teaser.

Look for the premiere of Room 104 on Friday, July 28th at 11:30PM on HBO.

Also, as this will be an anthology set at a chain hotel, this will be a fascinating, possibly more free sandbox for the Duplass brothers to play in.

We can’t wait to see what they come up with in 2017 when the series is set to debut.

The Duplass Brothers’ Togetherness is pretty much everything you would want from a TV show from Jay and Mark Duplass in how they unflinchingly explore the real and comedic tension of everyday life.

From the looks of this promo, Season 2 will be doubling down on that notion.

Catch the season premiere on Sun. Feb. 21st at 10:30PM on HBO.

As there are a couple of weeks before HBO premieres the highly anticipated animated series Animals from The Duplass Brothers, these fantastic character posters were tweeted out by Mark Duplass.

They all give you a pretty good sense of the show and might make you secretly wish animals are like this when us humans aren’t looking.

Finally, Here’s the First Teaser for The Duplass Brothers’ “Animals”

With BoJack Horseman and a multitude of web series that have talking animals, it would seem anthropomorphized animated series are becoming their own sub genre.

That being said, there’s still room for more such shows as you can see with this teaser of The Duplass Brothers’ Animals.

Not only are NYC animals talking like regular New Yorkers a clever concept, but having the voice talents of Nick Kroll Matt Walsh, Steve Zissis, Adam Scott, Colbie Smulders, Marc Maron, Zach Woods, Jessica Chastain, Horatio Sanz, Kumail Nanjiani, Katie Aselton, Wanda Sykes, Paul Scheer, Rob Corddry, and Molly Shannon definitely pushes it to the next level.

Look for the premiere of Animals on Friday Feb. 5th at 11:30PM on HBO.

Looks like grounded, unflinching looks into family, relationships, love, sex, etc. are not going away in TV comedy. There’s You’re the Worst, Transparent, and Catastrophe in addition to The Duplass Brothers’ Togetherness that all do the above so well.

By the way, Jay Duplass stars in Transparent and Mark Duplass stars in Togetherness on top of working the behind the scenes with his brother just in case you want to know Jay and Mark’s imprint on this sub genre.

Here’s a trailer for season 2 of Togetherness, which promises things are only going to get more off the rails.

Look for the premiere on Sun. Feb. 21st at 10:30PM on HBO.

The Duplass Brothers Set to Write Book of Essays

There’s a certain method to the madness of going from independent film to premium cable to essays.

Coming from Ballantine Books, Mark and Jay Duplass will publish a book filled with essays focused on their life experiences from childhood until now. If they’ve been able to make great art of their lives like they did with This Is John, we’re sure that this will be worth a read, if not several.

It’s going to be awhile though until this book comes out. The release date is set for sometime in 2017.

The Orchard Gets The Rights to Distribution Aside From Netflix For Seven Movies From The Duplass Brothers

Once more, there is proof of the indie empire, whether they’re aware of it or not, that Mark and Jay Duplass show are building.

The Duplass Brothers already have a four picture deal at Netflix and an overall deal at HBO. Why not get worldwide theatrical and non-online streaming distribution for seven of their movies?

The Orchard already will be releasing their swingers comedy The Overnight and will now take on six other movies from Mark and Jay to release theatrically as well as through any other media that isn’t Netflix/online streaming.

At this rate, we wouldn’t be surprised if Mark and Jay start a full fledged studio in the not so distant future.

HBO Orders Two Seasons of Animated Comedy Series “Animals” From Phil Matarese, Mike Luciano, and The Duplass Brothers

Props to HBO for decisiveness.

Both The Duplass Brothers and HBO are expanding their comedic scope by going two seasons in on an animated comedy series created by Phil Matarese and Mike Luciano. Apparently, it’s good enough to warrant the entire first season being picked up by HBO as well as the order for a second one all in one feel swoop.

As Animals follows NYC based animals and is targeted at adults, we’re curious how many animal jokes they’ll be firing off as compared to BoJack Horseman.

Nick Kroll, Katie Aselton, and Mark Duplass are all set to voice various animals.

We hope this is a hit not only to have a good show, but to encourage networks to give bigger season orders to new shows or have faith in new shows at all.

Things are just coming up Mark and Jay Duplass right now. Not only did they just land a historic four picture deal at Netflix, but Togetherness, their first full foray into TV, just got picked up for a second season.

This is all on top of Jay starring in Transparent and Mark starring in so many movies as well as The League and the pair producing movies left and right.

Are they a new power duo in comedy?

When it comes to pushing the boundaries of comedy, The Duplass Brothers, Mark and Jay, have not only push boundaries, but do so in an unexpected, but delightful way.

From The Puffy Chair to Jeff Who Lives at Home to Cyrus to their latest project, an HBO series, Togetherness and so much more (both together and individually), Mark and Jay find the comedy in life in some of the most organic ways possible.

So, of course we’re going to watch a nice, long intimate conversation that they have with Paul F. Tompkins on his nice, long intimate conversation web series Speakeasy.

From first time feature director Charlie McDowell and first time feature writer Justin Lader, we’re on board for this wherever it’s taking us.
