TCB Debriefing 12/1/23: Blair Socci, Jamie Lee/Nikki Glaser, JFL Vancouver, Chelsea Handler, Arclight/Cinerama Dome?

December 1, 2023
News

1. We’ve seen Blair Socci be a comedic force to be reckoned with (especially if you’re a fan of Triscuits) ever since we first saw her years and years ago. She just came out with her first hour special Live from the Big Dog and, we have to say, Blair is worth trying to figure out another streaming service (Veeps)

3. Jamie Lee and Nikki Glaser co-starring in a sitcom, Unsettling, where they go in on co-parenting a kid since they reached their 30s childless? Even though we’d never ever have children (don’t @ us, please), we’re on totally on board for anything Lee and Glaser do, both together or separately. (Deadline)

3. JFL is really back in full force, huh? Both Moontower JFL Austin and JFL Vancouver line-ups just had their first announcement and both are jam packed. Get tickets for the Mid-Feb festival if you’re in and around Vancouver at jflvancouver.com.

4. Chelsea Handler will return to host The Critics Choice Awards (Variety). If she gets a third go around hosting this, will that be enough holes on her awards show punch card to get another late night show?

5. We’ll leave you with this: You can uncross your fingers if you were hoping the ArcLight/Cinerama Dome in LA was going to reopen next year. Try 2025. (Deadline). It’s pretty much the last movie theater to reopen if it was indeed going to reopen.

The Daily Show Announces Schedule for First Round of Fill-In Hosts for Trevor Noah

January 5, 2023
News

Trevor Noah had indeed bid adieu to The Daily Show and the search for his replacement is well underway. As announced late last year, Comedy Central has opted to take their time with finding the next successor to The Daily Show mantle and, in the mean time, have a stable of hosts to take on hosting duties (potentially auditioning themselves for the role, perhaps?).

The first round of these hosts will go as follows

Leslie Jones 1/17-1/19
Wanda Sykes 1/23-1/26
DL Hughley 1/30-2/2
Chelsea Handler 2/6-2/9
Sarah Silverman 2/13-2/16

That very well could be a wide expanse of The Daily Show could and will feel like over the next month and a half as Leslie Jones’ Daily Show is probably going to be a tad different from Sarah Silverman’s. One should note that Handler has enthusiastically expressed interest in returning to late night and having a more socio-political bent on top of covering pop culture and Silverman ostensibly had her own version of The Daily Show with the amazing I Love You, America on Hulu.

Also, don’t be surprised if Comedy Central sneaks in some experimentation with the format itself. We personally hope they sneak the panel debate that The Nightly Show used to have back into this sort of show.

In any case, if you’d like to see this up close and personal for yourself and you happen to be in the NYC area, you can get free tickets from 1iota here.

The Comedy Bureau Field Report Ep. 95: Ruby Karp & Actual Hope

It’s one thing to think of young people as the future, but it’s a whole other thing to actually talk to them about what the prospect of the coming years has in store for them. Taking a cue from C’mon C’mon, we talk to Ruby Karp, a comedian who is both Gen Z and has had more experience in doing comedy than people in their 30s and 40s. Karp has an inspiring passion for comedy that is both captured through her own very genuine hope for the future of comedy and convinces that there is something actually better to come with 2022 onwards. It also helps that she is an unstoppably bubbly person to talk to.

Also, “hot” takes on Daniel Radcliffe as Weird Al Yankovic, the fame of Pete Davidson, Chelsea Handler’s memoir being adapted into a Peacock series, and more.

It was our hope that the biggest and brightest names in comedy would be coming out to do big fundraiser in the fight against COVID-19. Indeed, they have and continued to do so.

The latest star-studded comedy fundraiser is Americares’ COVID Is No Joke that will air LIVE on covidisnojoke.org and Americares YouTube channel at 5PM PT/8PM ET on Fri. May 1st.

COVID Is No Joke will be a jam-packed hour of a comedy variety live-stream spanning stand-up, stories, sketches, etc. from the likes of:

Elizabeth Banks, Ike Barinholtz, Jack Black and Tenacious D, Wayne Brady, D’Arcy Carden, Kristin Chenoweth, Tom Cotter, Mackenzie Davis, Mark Duplass, Will Ferrell, Gal Gadot, Kyle Gass, Linda Hamilton, Chelsea Handler, Mindy Kaling, Kerri Louise, Jonathan Mangum, Patton Oswalt, Natalia Reyes, Adam Scott, Finn Straley, Paige Weldon, Jenny Yang and more with actor/director/producer and Americares own Tony Goldwyn set to host.

That line-up really spans so many different corners of comedy and even includes names of comedians that we really dig that you ought to know going forward.

The funds raised will go to providing essential equipment and support (including mental health) for frontline health workers here in the U.S. and across the globe. $100K worth of donations has already been guaranteed FYI.

You can support Americares now or during the event by making a donation on americares.org or by texting “JOKE” to 20222 to make a $25 donation.

Trailer for “Chelsea” on Netflix Shows That Chelsea Handler Will Be Venturing Outside of a Studio a Lot

There’s a lot of anticipation over Chelsea Handler’s new show Chelsea. It’s Netflix first talk show as well as their first show that will be releasing episodes three times a week as opposed to their traditional all-episodes-streaming model. Also, there will be no commercial breaks, which isn’t unprecedented, but further prompts a departure from the traditional late night talk show format.

More intriguing than all of that, it appears from the trailer that Handler will be venturing from behind a desk quite a bit for a ton of remote segments, not unlike what she did with those Chelsea Does specials. Given the ‘clip-focused’ direction of late night these days, that’s probably a smart move.

You won’t have to wonder what Chelsea was up to for all this time for much longer. Chelsea starts streaming this Wednesday on Netflix.

Chelsea Handler’s Announces New Netflix Talk Show via a Letter to Herself

Chelsea Handler is about to simultaneously break new ground and make a comeback. Following her four topical Chelsea Does specials on Netflix, she’s going to premiere a new talk show on Netflix on May 11th that that will run on Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays.

So, for once, you won’t be all to stream the episodes in one go.

She made the announcement in a quasi-press release that’s in the form of a bullet-pointed letter to herself.

If you still have more questions about the series (i.e. When will the episodes start streaming?, What’s the name of the show?, Is there anything you couldn’t get away with at E! that you’re going to try to get away with at Netflix?), Chelsea will be answering questions via Twitter tomorrow at 9AM PST.

E!’s Next Comedy Talk Show To Be Hosted by Grace Helbig

(via Deadline)

Chelsea Handler and Chelsea Lately have left E!, but, apparently, E! is not done with talk shows hosted by comedians. They have tapped Internet sensation Grace Helbig to host her own traditional format talk show though she’ll be ditching the traditional sound stage for real world locations.

Maybe it’ll be a more upbeat, positive PG-13 version of Insomniac with Dave Attell with celebrity guests? This Daily Grace talk show will air in primetime, for now, rather than go against the boys club in late night or tangle with daytime, which is almost entirely filled by female hosts.

With that all being said, it’s very intriguing to see that E!’s next talk show will be hosted by someone that is arguably the antithesis, tone-wise, of Handler.

A Ton of Celebrities and Comedians Sing a Farewell to Chelsea Handler and Chelsea Lately

Last night was the very last episode in Chelsea Handler’s 7 year run at E! as the titular host of Chelsea Lately. To mark the occasion, she got 50 Cent, Miley Cyrus, Tim Gunn, Gwen Stefani, Dave Grohl, Melissa McCarthy, Sandra Bullock, Gerard Butler, Fergie, Jennifer Aniston, Avril Lavigne and so many other A-listers as well as so many of the comedians who have been/worked on the show including Fortune Feimster, Kurt Braunohler, Sarah Colonna, Kevin Nealon, Ian Karmel, Claire Titleman, Matt Braunger, Ron Funches, and way more to do a big farewell musical number.

It’s a touching sentiment that all these people came together and sang a song all about Chelsea Handler, but we would like to point out that around 1:27, TJ Miller is wearing the best suit ever and around 2:15, Natasha Leggero might be holding the best portrait that’s ever been held up during a farewell song.

IFC Developing ‘Rabbit Hole’ From Jamie Denbo and Kerri Kenney

IFC’s latest addition to their development slate is a project from Chelsea Handler’s Borderline Amazing Productions, created and written by Jamie Denbo and Kerri Kenney called Rabbit Hole.

While the Bunny Ranch is known as the most famous brothel in Nevada, Rabbit Hole would follow the second most famous brothel. What that in mind, this could be like Reno 911 is to Cops, but to Cathouse.

TJ Miller Guest Hosts Chelsea Lately

If you’ve wondered what TJ Miller hosting a late night talk show sans a blue demon costume would be like, wonder no more. Miller filled in for Chelsea Handler on Chelsea Lately last night and definitely brought his wonderfully absurd comedic sensibilities with him.

Watch him open the show and interview Whiz Khalifa and make a case for being a host of a certain 11:30PM spot that will open up next year at Comedy Central should TJ be up for such a thing.

Chelsea Handler To Not Renew Contract at E!

Chelsea Handler To Not Renew Contract at E!

Chelsea Lately has had many a great comedian on, either as writer or panelist, including Greg Proops, Matt Braunger, TJ Miller, Fortune Fiemster, Jen Kirkman, Kurt Braunohler, Ryan Stout, and way more over the last several years during Chelsea Handler’s stint at E!.

However, Handler is looking to move her show elsewhere once her contract is up at E! around the end of this year, which might offer an expanded format (i.e. radio, etc.). Wherever she ends up moving, it will be a big move, especially as the only female late night host.

Jen Kirkman To Star In & Create FXx Comedy

Jen Kirkman To Star In & Create FXx Comedy

FX/FXx has found their next comedian that they want to develop a series around thankfully in Jen Kirkman. Much along the way Legit and Louie are focused on the comedy of Jim Jefferies and Louis C.K., ‘Jen’ will be seemingly very much centered on Jen Kirkman’s stand up.

It’s also good to see that FXx is keeping their development slate robost and moving. If anything, this should emphatically prove that Jen Kirkman, as her podcast suggests, is indeed fun.
