There are plenty of options for the Greater LA Area that will very likely run you more than a few pretty pennies and mostly be people get drunk while music is played very loud up until a countdown for New Year’s somewhere in the world.

For all the extensive digging and scouring we’ve done on what might be “the” thing to go to on New Year’s Eve (unless you mostly just wanted to get drunk off of champagne and do countdowns), we think we’ve got the thing for LA. Our money is on Ron Lynch having a special exclusive night of his long running, beloved midnight variety show, Tomorrow!, head to another beloved LA institution, The Bob Baker Marionette Theater, for a special music/comedy/dancing extravaganza of a New Year’s Eve starting at 10PM.

Slated to join Lynch for the evening include Tomorrow! favorites of all kinds (comedians, carnies, magicians, non-comedic musicians, musical comedians, and more) including Jack Dagger, Sethward, Drennon Davis, Ian Abramson, Psychic Buster, Nick Stargu, Kristen Lundberg, Wesley Doloris, Blake Rosier, “The Unkillable” Jenny Lynne, Chaki.

Best of all, a ticket to Bob Baker Marionette Theater Presents NYE’s Spectacular: Tomorrow! Hosted by Ron Lynch only costs $23, which is a steal of a deal. Go get your tix now.

Bob Baker Day Is Going Virtual for 2021, But Will Explore Los Angeles With Its Marionettes

One of LA’s best treasures, The Bob Baker Marionette Theater, takes one day, Bob Baker Day, out of the year to really pull out all the stops and highlight why they are such the aforementioned local jewel.

Of course, they still can’t do their normal all day festival that would take place in person that is effectively like an entire carnival for the theater featuring puppet shows, live music, workshops, etc. Instead, while the pandemic has most of us stuck at home, they’re doing something different, but equally charming and also cleverly innovative.

The Bob Baker Marionette Theater will be putting on, in collaboration with Metro Arts, a virtual tour of Los Angeles starting at LA’s famed Union Station. This Bob Baker Day virtual LA tour will show off the city as well as feature plenty of the marionettes and puppets that the theater is famed for. Get a sneak peek of what’s in store with this featurette here.

Look for this exclusive Bob Baker Day to start on Sat. Feb. 27th and then be available to virtually watch/engage/play with for 7 days.

You’ve very likely seen that the enduring pandemic has taken down live venues around the country, one-by-one as the months wear on in lockdown (especially with another full scale lockdown looming). UCB in NYC, The Creek & The Cave, Cap City Comedy Club, and Improv Olympic have unfortunately made the grave decision to close down for good as the cost of trying to weather the storm and re-opening was just far too costly.

The Bob Baker Marionette Theater could be another such place that will have to close without direct support (and that doesn’t seem to be coming from the government, like it should be, any time soon). For decades, The Bob Baker Marionette Theater has been one of the more magical, hidden gems of LA that housed famous puppeteer Bob Baker and all of his creations. All sorts of puppet, marionette, and variety shows have been put up at the theater to the delight of so many folks of all ages.

Before the pandemic started creeping in, The Bob Baker Marionette Theater was just getting used to their shiny, brand new home in Eagle Rock. It would be a travesty if building up their new theater and moving across town was all for naught just because of COVID-19.

So, they’re looking to raise funds to keep them afloat into 2021 (and hopefully longer). Their goal is $365K and they’re already almost a third of the way there. Please consider keeping one of LA’s treasures around and support the Bob Baker Marionette Theater here.
