The weather in LA’s a lot more reliable (fingers crossed) these days and, as such, one of LA’s coolest hidden gems, Little Secret, is getting things going again. Always seamlessly blending comedy, music, and social justice, Little Secret will be hosting a special benefit for Hollywood Food Coalition with Gift Horse Project called Pre-Pride Proud to Feed LA.

On the bill is astounding line-up of Margaret Cho, Nick Thune, Ashley Ray, Dylan Adler, Luke Rathborne, & Escape Artist Lovers along with Michael Imperioli, Rain Phoenix, Jena Malone, and Rooney Mara (and tunes from DJ Allie Teilz).

All that show can be enjoyed for only $16 right now and all proceeds go to Hollywood Food Coalition. Go get them here.

Pick of the Day: Fools’ Circle (in LA) 10/10

One of Brooklyn’s favorite outdoor shows had been happening in Prospect Park, but has been touring around the country for last few months. Host Teklai has been leading off the best way to spend your Sunday afternoons with a great blend of comedy and DJs, rappers, and more.

Luckily, one of the stops in LA and at the amphitheater at Pan Pacific Park (right next to The Grove) this Sun. Oct. 10th. Music starts at 2PM PT and the comedy goes up at 3PM PT and we have no doubt there’ll be a nice hang in one of LA’s pristine parks post-show.

On the bill:

Comedy Chloe Hilliard, Rell Battle, Sasha Merci, James Davis, Ashley Ray, and more

Music: American Matthew ( Believe in Yourself Do It Yourself Records)

Get more info, RSVP for the show here, and clear out your Sunday brunch plans.

Please Enjoy Ashley Ray’s Set on HBO Max’s Human By Orientation Series for Pride Month

June 21, 2021

As a show of support, HBO Max is lifting up the voices of queer people of all backgrounds via their Human By Orientation series for the month of June.

One of the things that they did for said series was put some of the best queer comedians that need to be spotlighted, put them on a rooftop that has the DTLA skyline in the background, and have them do a set. One of those comedians is Ashley Ray, who put on such a delightful set (in spite of coming out of quarantine and having this do that on a somewhat breezy LA evening) focused on how hard it is to be a saint on all fronts these days.

Since there seems to be way less stand-up on late night and less places for short stand-up sets to live with the branding of a major network or streaming service (i.e. less opportunity for up and comedians to get discovered on big platforms that used to have way more comedy), we’re glad to see HBO Max highlighting queer comedians with Human By Orientation and we hope that they keep it up.

Please watch Ashley Ray’s HBO Max set here.

HBO Max to Release Specials from Meg Stalter and Ashley Ray as Part of Pride 2021

June 4, 2021
News
ashley ray, comedy special, Meg Stalter

Pride 2021 or not, (Happy Pride, by the way) both Meg Stalter and Ashley Ray both deserve their own comedy specials.

You very likely have seen Stalter play a gloriously oblivious assistant on Hacks, but she has been a delightful agent of chaos on comedy stages for years (and also on her fantastic podcast, Confronting Demons). Ray has had a sharp, whip smart voice when it comes to dissecting pop culture from a black, queer lens and has also been sharing her pinpoint observations on stages all across the country for quite some time.

Now, HBO Max will have their latest specials from Meg and Ashley as part of their nod, as a network, to Pride 2021. Again, no matter the month or what we’re celebrating, we’re very much looking forward to see what both Stalter and Ray have cooked up for their very first specials in the coming weeks.

Pick of the Day: The Yard Theater Fundraiser 9/25

The Yard Theater in LA was just getting on its feet with building out its live programming schedule featuring comedy, music, theater, etc. just before lockdown started. They had plenty of classes and open mics as well and were poised, under the guidance of one John Ennis, to return this space (The Yard Theater used to be another multi-purpose variety venue called The Fake Gallery, FYI) to being a beloved, go-to indie venue.
You already know the story from there when March of this year came around and as we are in our sixth months of all venues being dark in LA, The Yard Theater is putting together one hell of a live-stream fundraiser to keep the ability to reopen in the future.
Slated for The Yard Theater Fundraiser Fundstacular are:

The Pixies’ Black Francis
Erica Rhodes
Jon Huck
Mark Fite
Ashley Ray
Amrita Dhaliwal
Brett Johnson
Michael Rayner
Neal Dandade
John Tottenham
Ellen Sugarman
Chris Walsh
Dean Evans
& More
That’s pretty damn great and brings in some of LA’s best from all sorts of corners of performance. Tickets range from $15-$31.50 (will include an exclusive button and poster) and you can and very, very much should get them here.
