Will Smith’s Stand-Up Series “This Joka” Will Actually Get to See the Light of Day

Well before COVID-19, there was a weekend where many of LA and NYC’s very best comedians that you needed to know were swept up to Vegas to tape a special stand-up comedy series that was entirely put up by the one and only Will Smith. Called This Joka, it was going to be a new introduction to many of our absolute favorite comedians that we personally try to highlight whenever we can here at TCB.

So, not only did COVID-19 put a pause, interrupt the scheduling of, or even outright shut down so much comedy, but This Joka temporarily fell victim to originally be at the ill-fated short form streaming service, Quibi. When the news broke that Quibi was closing up shop, This Joka was still on the docket to premiere and we were worried that this whole series would never get to be seen by you, us, and everyone else that needs to see the future of stand-up comedy.

Thankfully, Roku bought up Quibi’s library including This Joka and we will all get treated to see Will Smith’s curated stand-up series that features Baron Vaughn, Sam Tallent, Punkie Johnson, Rosebud Baker, Clayton English, Chris Estrada, David Gborie, Sean Patton, Megan Gailey, Rell Battle, Shane Torres, Vanessa Gonzalez, Daphinque Springs, Martin Urbano, Jackie Fabulous, and Christi Chiello.

Many have since gone to new heights in their career by the way. Estrada has his own Hulu series in the works, Rosebud got her own special, and Sam became an acclaimed author.

Come Fri. Mar. 4th, you’ll be able to stream This Joka for free on Roku. You can get a taste of what’s to come (and get nostalgic about comedy right before COVID) with the trailer here.

Pick of the Day: Picture This! 9 to 5 Anniversary 4/17

March 17, 2021
News
9 to 5 anniversary, animated comedy, baron vaughn, joel kim booster, kati prescott, live comedy, mike hollingsworth, mike l mayfield, virtual comedy

One of the best shows that we went to in or out of the pandemic was the live animation/live comedy hybrid experience lovingly known as Picture This! For the uninitiated (or those who have spent so much time in quarantine that they’ve forgotten the before times), some of the best animators around would live-animate based on stand-up comedy that was being performed and their animations would be projected on a screen behind the comedian. The results were, with no irony at all, magical (and, of course, hysterical).

There have been a number of virtual versions of the show throughout lockdown, but Picture This! has been on a bit of a break. That all ends next month when they simultaneously celebrate a 9 year anniversary in LA and a 5 five year anniversary in NYC.

To mark the occasion, they have a stellar line-up of comedians and artists, which include:

Baron Vaughn (Superstore)
Joel Kim Booster (Search Party)
Mike Hollingsworth (BoJack Horseman)
Mike L. Mayfield (Midnight Gospel)
Brandie Posey (Lady to Lady)
Kati Prescott (Showtime)
Bryan Brinkman (SNL)
Dan Pinto (Nickelodeon)
& more!

The Picture This! 9 to 5 Anniversary is set to stream Sat. Apr. 17th at 6PM PT/9PM ET and tickets are only, GASP, $10. Go get them here right now.

In the search for a way to safely celebrate and somewhat adequately celebrate Halloween, might we suggest a special virtual adaptation of one of the most renowned cult films of all time, Plan 9 From Outer Space.

The amazing Dana Gould will be at the helm for this special live-stream event presented by, as they’re foregoing an in-person festival when they would normally have it in January, SF Sketchfest. Gould has led live-reads of Plan 9 From Outerspace over the years, but this edition will be special as there will be an original cast member, a real prop flying saucer which was used on set in Ed Wood’s shoot as well as a cast chock full of stars including Maria Bamford, Bobcat Goldthwait, Jean Grae, David Koechner, Tim Meadows, Laraine Newman, Oscar Nunez, Bob Odenkirk, Jonah Ray, Paul F. Tompkins, Janet Varney, Baron Vaughn, Kat Aagesen, plus musical accompaniment by Eban Schletter.

This very special edition of Plan 9 From Outer Space is set for Thurs. Oct. 29th at 6PM PT/9PM ET. Tickets are $10 and you can (and very much should) get them here.

News

Undoubtedly, you’ve seen that there have been long lines for early voting and the ones for the official Election Day on Nov. 3rd is very likely to be no different and possibly even worst.

So, Abortion Access Front is swooping in to help folks past the time (in many cases several hours) while they’re waiting to vote in one of the most important elections of our lifetime. They’ll be doing a 12 hour live-stream marathon of comedy to aid in making it through some of the longest lines that people will have ever had to stay in with the comedy stylings of Baron Vaughn, Alonzo Bodden, Jenny Yang, Judy Gold, Jessica Kirson, Erin Foley, DeAnne Smith, and many more.

Abortion Access Front will be live-streaming Vote. No Joke. on Nov. 3rd 9AM PT/12PM ET to 9PM PT/12AM ET. You’ll be able to watch it all for FREE via Abortion Access Front social media platforms on Youtube, Facebook, @abortionfront on Twitter, as well as Comedy Hub’s Twitch channel.

If you’ve already voted, you can just enjoy a madcap marathon of great comedy that whole day while trying to not think about the results taking probably a week or two to count.

Even though they won’t get the gorgeous space of a venue like the Theatre at the Ace Hotel, Young Storytellers will still put on their annual, pull-out-all-the-stops evening, The Biggest Show, that combines your favorite actors and comedy folks with the best stories written by students in their program in benefit of Young Storytellers’ upcoming programs.

This year, they will be doing The Biggest Show virtually with a cast that’s just as biggest and wonderful as any other year. That’ll include Jason Mantzoukas, Aparna Nancherla, Baron Vaughn, Judy Greer, Marcel Spears, Randall Park, and Tony Hale.

SF Sketchfest Is Going Virtual (and Postponing What Would Have Been Their 20th In-Person Festival)

September 21, 2020
News
baron vaughn, bobcat goldthwait, dana gould, david koechner, janet varney, jonah ray, maria bamford, paul f tompkins, plan 9 from outer space, sf sketchfest

Though some big time festivals and awards ceremonies have happened in the last month or so, they have been done so in a strange fashion with largely no audience, limited attendees, and everyone in masks, observing social distancing when possible, and still relying largely on remote interviews/guests/presenters.

One of the world’s biggest and most renowned comedy festivals, SF Sketchfest happens at the beginning of the year and, a few months ago, late January might have seemed like a safe time for when the pandemic might have been over, but that more and more seems to be not the case given the progress of vaccines and the continued return of COVID-19 case numbers rising around the world. So, SF Sketchfest has opted to postpone what would have been their 20th year and their big shindig for 2021 and, as you might guess, go virtual with live-streaming events to give the SF Sketchfest loyal something to look forward to.

They’ll be starting this virtual SF Sketchfest programming with a bang by doing a very special adaptation of cult movie classic Plan 9 From Outer Space that will feature miniature special effects and a marvelous cast including Maria Bamford, Bobcat Goldthwait, Dana Gould, David Koechner, Jonah Ray, Paul F. Tompkins, Janet Varney, Baron Vaughn and more TBA & musical accompaniment by Eban Schletter. This special virtual edition of Plan 9 From Outer Space is set for Thu. Oct. 29th at 6PM PT.

Tickets are $10 and can be snagged here.

“Super Serious” Offers an Oral History of LA Indie Stand-Up Scene in a Gorgeous Coffee Table Book

July 14, 2020

It’s unclear as to exactly what was going on in 2010 in LA comedy, but it was the starting point of almost everything that makes it special now (well, right before COVID-19 struck anyway). The Meltdown with Jonah and Kumail started around then, WTF with Marc Maron was picking up steam and kickstarted LA’s comedy podcast explosion, and even we had our humble beginnings around then. Also, so many indie comedy shows popped in and around LA giving the LA comedy scene the sort of connective tissue that it was missing years prior.

One such show is The Super Serious Show and, as they’ve kept their high flying variety show going for a decade between a handful of unique, wondrous venues around LA, they’ve seen the ebbs and flows, the new, the old, the highs, the shifts, the rumblings, the lows, and everything in between that has been going in the venerable indie LA comedy scene, especially when it comes to stand-up. Thus, Super Serious Show co-creator and portrait photographer Mandee Johnson assembled a lovely and exhaustive oral history of the comedy scene here in LA, accented by her signature polaroid portraiture of the hundreds and hundreds of performers that have stepped on The Super Serious Show stage. Contributors to this special oral history entitled Super Serious: An Oral History of Los Angeles Independent Stand-Up Comedy include Hasan Minhaj, Rory Scovel, Anthony Jeselnik, Karen Kilgariff, Baron Vaughn, Dave Anthony, Andy Kindler, Natalie Palamides, Kristen Schaal, Ron Funches, Reggie Watts, Rachel Bloom, Dana Gould, Eddie Pepitone, Cameron Esposito and dozens more.

If you’re as obsessive about comedy as we are, it’s definitely a must have for your coffee table (or whatever table you have). Super Serious: An Oral History of Los Angeles Independent Stand-Up Comedy is available for pre-order now and will be released on Aug. 18th from Andrews McMeel Publishing. Given how there are plenty of shipping delays for non-essential items these days in the U.S., best to put your order in now. Get more details and get your copy here.

Fun news alert: We have a BOOK!

Pick of the Day: Call & Response with Baron Vaughn and Open Mike Eagle

June 10, 2020
News
baron vaughn, blavity, call and response, funny or die, mike eagle

Whether you’re missing The New Negroes and/or you enjoy the beautiful comedy of Baron Vaughn and the fantastic music of Open Mike Eagle and/or you support the need for their to be more amplified representation of BIPOC in media, you’ll be happy to know that Baron and Mike are getting a brand new live-stream show Call & Response.

Their show New Negroes focused on presenting a class of black comedians that should been on your radar and featured plenty of sketch/music video hybrids. Call & Response is going to expand their reach and have a much more topical bent with Vaughn and Eagle talking with all sorts of creatives about this current historical moment, how they’re part of it, and what to do going forward.

Best of all, you’ll get this crucial delight of a variety talk show daily from Funny or Die and Blavity.

Specifically, the show will be live-streamed every day at 12PM PT/3PM ET starting Tues. Jun. 16th at all these places:
Funny or Die’s channels on YouTube, Twitter, Facebook, and Twitch
Blavity’s channels on YouTube, Twitter, Facebook

Pick of the Day: Hollywood Quars 6/4

News
baron vaughn, brandie posey, caitlin gill, casey ley, charity benefit, chris estrada, hollywood quars, jessica sele, madison shepard, minnesota freedom fund, sean keane, steph tolev

This brand new, weekly comedy game show, Hollywood Quars, hosted by Matt Lieb, takes trivia to a whole new level as both the contestants AND the host don’t know the answers to the questions (even when the host wrote them). It’s up to a really great line-up of comedians to make it seem like their answer is the best (or maybe even actually right?).

For this first edition of Hollywood Quars on Thurs. Jun. 4th at 7:30PM PT/10:30PM ET, they’ve assembled:

Baron Vaughn (Netflix, Comedy Central)
Steph Tolev (Comedy Central)
Brandie Posey (Lady 2 Lady Podcast)
Sean Keane (Roundball Rock Podcast)
Caitlin Gill (NPR, 2 Dope Queens)
Madison Shepard (Album “Goodnight Silverlake Lounge”)
Jessica Sele (Vice TV)
Chris Estrada (Comedy Central)
Casey Ley (Gay Power Half Hour )

Also, we gotta say, having gotten a sneak peak, this very well might be one of the slickest looking comedy game shows done via live-stream.

By the way, they’ll be raising money for Minnesota Freedom Fund (which, due to so much support, is distributing funds to other worthy causes)

Tickets are $8 if you snag them right now and you can (and very much should) go get them here.

Will Smith Hosted Stand-Up Series “This Joka” Coming to Quibi

(via Deadline)

Quibi was about to tape its own stand-up series at the Hollywood Improv right when this current pandemic shut all live entertainment down for the time being.

Fortunately, there was a stand-up series that had already been shot by Will Smith’s Westbrook Studios several months ago in Las Vegas and that series, called “This Joka”, has found its way to the just-about-to-launch mobile streaming platform Quibi (set to launch next week on Apr. 6th).

Many of our favorite comics that we’ve gotten to see up close in the before times will be featured on this series including:

Baron Vaughn
Chris Estrada
Christi Chiello
Clayton English
Daphnique Springs
David Gborie
Demi Adejuyigbe
George Wallace
Jackie Fabulous
Martin Urbano
Punkie Johnson
Rosebud Baker
Sam Tallent
Shane Torres
Shawn Wasabi
Vanessa Gonzalez

Per Quibi’s platform, episodes won’t be longer than 10 minutes and there are 16 of them ordered, which probably means that each episode will be a showcase set and conversation with the comics line-up. Also, Will Smith hosted all of This Joka and the one and only Lance Bangs directed the whole thing, making this stand-up series just all the more intriguing.

This very riveting documentary short Laughing Matters: The Funny Business of Being Sad from SoulPancake, Funny or Die, director Mike Bernstein, and producer/editor Georgia Koch shows how depression has woven its way through the lives of many of your favorite comedic writers, actors, and stand-ups and how they’ve managed to cope.

Included in the doc are harrowing stories of such celebrated funny people Chris Gethard, Sarah Silverman, Rachel Bloom, Baron Vaughn, Neal Brennan, Aparna Nancherla, Rainn Wilson, Sara Benincasa, Riki Lindhome, Wayne Brady, and Anna Akana.

It is indeed #WorldMentalHealthDay and it’s especially worth watching today, but how Laughing Matters effectively navigates the thread of everyone journey with depression, anxiety, and more in this doc is pretty amazing and worth a watch at any time. It’s yet another reminder of how prolific issues with mental health are and why it’s important to take care of it and to know that you’re not alone in how you feel (even though it might feel that way)

You can (and should) watch it here.
