Get a Better Look at Bob Odenkirk’s Latest “Lucky Hank”, Which Will Probably Be the Funniest Series He’s Starred In (in Awhile)

February 15, 2023
News
amc, bob odenkirk, lucky hank

Given that the name of his recently released memoir is Comedy Comedy Comedy Drama, Bob Odenkirk has spent his most recent years becoming an iconic dramatic actor (and a bit of a badass in Nobody) in stark contrast in his days making his mark with Mr. Show. That said, Odenkirk still makes time for bits including some pretty great cameos in I Think You Should Leave.

Still, Odenkirk hasn’t had top billing for a comedy series since 2015’s With Bob and David, a long-awaited follow-up to Mr. Show. This AMC adaptation of a Richard Russo novel, Lucky Hank, will be a return to leading comedy role, but one that’s also informed by Bob’s critically acclaimed years on Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul. It’ll be hysterical as you can see in the first official trailer for Lucky Hank here, but in a much more grounded way than Odenkirk’s sketch comedy days.

Looks like we’ll all have to find a way to get AMC+ access starting Sun. Mar. 19th.

Here’s the Very First Teaser for Bob Odenkirk as ‘Lucky Hank’

January 24, 2023
News
amc, bob odenkirk, lucky hank, teaser

There was a whiff of a teaser that we’ve gotten for Bob Odenkirk‘s next big thing AMC, Lucky Hank, but there wasn’t much more to go off of other than seeing Bob’s face as the character and the source material, Richard Russo‘s novel Straight Man. That’s especially intriguing considering whether the split between comedy and drama would be for this show.

Seems like, from this very first teaser, that Odenkirk, as the titular Hank Devereaux, will be falling more into the comedy side of things. That seems explicitly clear as Hank seems inundated with the sort of life that makes his nickname ironic (especially the final moment of the teaser).

It’s just a tiny morsel, but it’s a pretty tasty one and one that is signaling perhaps a third acclaimed show Bob Odenkirk has been in on AMC.

Look for the premiere of Lucky Hank on Mon. Mar. 19th on AMC and AMC+.

See Bob Odenkirk as Unlucky English Chair Dept. Head in His Next AMC Series “Lucky Hank”

January 10, 2023
News
amc, bob odenkirk, lucky hank

Between Saul Goodman/Jimmy McGill from Better Call Saul and Breaking Bad, Hutch Mansell from Nobody, Bob Odenkirk has taken on a number of career defining characters that wheel and deal with a life of violence for a decade now. Now, standing upon a career that spans him being a celebrated thespian as well as a generation defining comedian/writer, it would seem that he could do whatever he wants (especially if it’s at AMC)

That next thing is just around the corner in the form of a new series, Lucky Hank, that might marry the comedy and drama halves of his life. Set for a March 19th premiere on AMC+, Odenkirk plays the titular character that is the chairman of English department in the Rust Belt that is having a mid-life crisis. While that could be the premise for a character that Odenkirk could play on I Think You Should Leave, Lucky Hank might have a little less absurdity and more pathos as it was developed as a dramedy.

There is plenty to imagine from this teaser here (especially with how off the rails this show might go compared to everything else Bob has done in the last ten years), but it doesn’t change the fact that we’ll have to ponder about how to get AMC+ without increasing our streaming service bill too much before March 19th.

Bob Odenkirk Is Officially Returning to (Kind of) Comedy with ‘Straight Man’ Series Order

April 21, 2022
News
amc, bob odenkirk, series order, straight man

(via THR)

For how iconic Bob Odenkirk is as a seminal figure in comedy history, a founder of so-called “alternative comedy”, and the co-star and co-creator of one of the most renowned sketch comedy series, Mr. Show, it’s strange to know that there is a whole generation of people that know him primarily for his work on Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul. Odenkirk has been hailed as one of TV’s great characters Saul Goodman in this latest Golden Age of Television (and is pretty damn great in the not-praised-enough Undone), but that doesn’t mean that Bob will go the route of Richard Belzer (a lauded stand-up that is most known now for Law & Order).

Odenkirk has done bits here and there (and even done another round of sketch comedy via Netflix with With Bob & David), but it has been a long time since he has set his sights entirely on comedy. This next project at AMC (smart move on AMC’s part by keeping him in the fold) will be a dramedy that will have Bob at an English Department head at and underfunded rust belt college. Perhaps, a darker, more adult, college version of Abbott Elementary? Maybe, it’ll be a bit like the cameo he had on I Think You Should Leave?

It’s hard to say at this point, but the possibilities given Bob’s path that has wound thoroughly through praise and success in both sides of the comedy/drama spectrum leaves the world wide open. AMC’s penchant for anything comedy is more on the darker/dramatic side as shown by Kevin Can Go F Himself.

We’ll just have to wait for a teaser/trailer to see what Bob has up his sleeve with this project that’ll be called Straight Man, but we’re excited that Bob is coming back to, even partially, to comedy.

Editor and Littlefield booker Gabe Henry not only loves both comedy and haikus, but saw that similarities between the precision of a joke and the 5-7-5 structure of a haiku and wanted to marry the two.

Gathering dozens and dozens of comedy’s very best and renowned including Aparna Nancherla, Roy Wood Jr., Maria Bamford, Bob Odenkirk, Janeane Garofalo, Jerry Seinfeld, Aubrey Plaza, Ziwe, Chris Gethard, and so many more, Eating Salad Drunk: Haikus for the Burnout Age by Comedy Greats gives you perfect morsels of comedic minimalism. alan sepinwall, bob odenkirk, memoir

Bob Odenkirk, now a comedy legend turn celebrated drama thespian/action star, has recounted his wild, topsy turvy career (it’s almost as unpredictable as an episode of Mr. Show at this point) in his upcoming memoir Comedy Comedy Comedy Drama. Not only will this book undoubtedly be on the reading list of any comedy fan this year and beyond, but Odenkirk is going on an in-person book tour (yes, we’re doing those again) that ought to be a must see event.

For LA & NYC, Odenkirk will be stopping into The William Vale in Brooklyn, with the heralded critic Alan Sepinwall in conversation, on Mon. Feb. 28th at 7:45PM ET and the Aratani Theatre in Little Tokyo here in LA on Mar. 9th 8PM PT. Tickets are $35 and $50 respectively and includes a signed copy of the book. The Comedy Bureau Field Report Ep. 97: Erik Abriss & The Actual Good Fight

If you’ve listened to the nearly 100 episodes of The Comedy Bureau Field Report that have been recorded and released, you ought to know that there are an unbelievable amount of forces pushing and pulling at each other underneath the shiny, delightful surface of comedy. As of 2022, there is stil no real union that comedians have largely organized behind and, as such, fairness and equity for labor in comedy is one of its most critical issues (and is connected to inclusivity, access, safety, etc.). Intrepid LA indie comedy producer Erik Abriss and TCB’s Jake Kroeger get into the thick of these intersections of comedy, labor, representation, and really trying to figure some sort of North Star to look for and follow to a better future in comedy.

Yes, that means we talk about Joe Rogan’s mess with disinformation on The Joe Rogan Experience and ignorantly the potentially dangerous level of influence he has on his listeners. Also, “hot” takes on Ali Wong’s new special and Bob Odenkirk and David Cross’ new project.

Bob Odenkirk and David Cross Reunite to Develop Cult Mockumentary Series “Guru Nation”

February 1, 2022
News
bob odenkirk, david cross, guru nation, paramount plus

(via Deadline)

If you thought With Bob & David would be the work from the legendary comedy duo of Bob Odenkirk and David Cross (since Odenkirk seems more than busy as a highly sought after dramatic actor for both TV and film), then, as of today, you are now wrong.

Odenkirk and Cross, who first rose to fame with their seminal sketch series Mr. Show are teaming up once again, this time to develop a new mockumentary series that follows rival cult leaders leading their zealots to whatever ridiculous ends they dream up (and we have no doubt that they’ll be flat out absurd if this is coming from David Cross and Bob Odenkirk and have Jason Woliner, director of Borat Subsequent Moviefilm and Eagleheart attached). We wouldn’t be surprised if they went to the extremes of Jonestown, but done competitively.

We hate to burden you with more reason to make sure you have another streaming service, but, since this is being developed for Paramount +, you just might have to go in for it.

It’s the first day of 2021 even though it feels like 2020 is still going on and doing it’s terrible, terrible thing, you can, if you’re up for it, try to start the year anew.

In that regard, we’d like to remind you of the first real big comedy event of the year (it’s still virtual, FYI): SF Sketchfest’s Festpocalypse. Coming in at the end of January right around when SF Sketchfest, one of the world’s biggest comedy festivals would normally happen, Festpocalypse will be a virtual event at a proportion that SF Sketchfest hasn’t ever done. Just take a gander at that line-up on the flyer. Even though it’s taking place over one day only, it really is a bill that they’d have at their normally scheduled, three week comedy festival extravaganza that takes over San Francisco.

Also, you should note that Festpocalypse is a fundraiser for SF Sketchfest to keep going in the future when doing a big time festival will be allowed.

Festpocalypse is set for Jan. 30th and will begin streaming at 5PM PT/8PM ET. Tickets start at only $20, but go up if you want to snag some merch. Go get them here.

In the search for a way to safely celebrate and somewhat adequately celebrate Halloween, might we suggest a special virtual adaptation of one of the most renowned cult films of all time, Plan 9 From Outer Space.

The amazing Dana Gould will be at the helm for this special live-stream event presented by, as they’re foregoing an in-person festival when they would normally have it in January, SF Sketchfest. Gould has led live-reads of Plan 9 From Outerspace over the years, but this edition will be special as there will be an original cast member, a real prop flying saucer which was used on set in Ed Wood’s shoot as well as a cast chock full of stars including Maria Bamford, Bobcat Goldthwait, Jean Grae, David Koechner, Tim Meadows, Laraine Newman, Oscar Nunez, Bob Odenkirk, Jonah Ray, Paul F. Tompkins, Janet Varney, Baron Vaughn, Kat Aagesen, plus musical accompaniment by Eban Schletter.

This very special edition of Plan 9 From Outer Space is set for Thurs. Oct. 29th at 6PM PT/9PM ET. Tickets are $10 and you can (and very much should) get them here.

Mr. Show is having a reunion.

That should be enough of a sell for you to buy a ticket to, well, anything that has the seminal, foundational, legendary sketch series from David Cross and Bob Odenkirk gather once again. This Zoom live-stream show will not only have Bob and David, but the storied Mr. Show writers/performers including: Paul F. Tompkins, Scott Aukerman, Tom Kenny, Jill Talley, Jay Johnston, Brian Posehn, Brett Paesel, and John Ennis.

Also, the Mr. Show Zoomtacular Annual Business Call Event for Charity will actually be for a real charity (and not just some meta bit). Proceeds will be going to LIFT, an organization dedicated to specifically breaking the cycle of poverty, which is more crucial than ever in these times.

On top of that, tickets for this special Mr. Show reunion will only cost $12.20 (that includes the service fee), when you’d probably pay at least triple if you were to see this in person. So, with all of that said, support a great cause and see a historic comedy event this Wed. May 13th at 5PM PT/8PM ET and get your tickets here already.

For every Bob Odenkirk late night appearance, it isn’t satisfactory enough to just do a straightforward panel interview.

The co-creator of Mr. Show has to sneak in some mischief in some way, shape, or form and Odenkirk opted for taking the idea of “trading places” and adding a Mr. Show-With Bob & David twist to it while on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.

It seems to put Odenkirk in the same sort of chaos that he’s accustomed to on AMC, but in the role of a greeting card writer trying to recapture his former greeting card glory. See all the absurdist comedy madness in the trailer here.

If that’s your idea of Valentine’s, it’s now streaming on Netflix.

Bob Odenkirk to Write a Book of Personal Essays

Odenkirk actually thinks of this more as a ‘comic bildungsroman’, which is a label that’s more often applied to coming-of-age stories in a much more dramatic sense.

Still, Odenkirk worked his way up to be a cult comedy legend then transitioned into being a celebrated dramatic actor and that journey will be an undeniably engrossing one.

We’ll also be curious to see how, if at all, meta he gets in this first book.

Netflix is smart to stay in the Bob Odenkirk business.

WIth Bob & David has only been on Netflix for a little bit and already, Netflix is planning their next move with Bob by picking up the film he stars in and co-wrote with Philip Zlotorynski and Eric Hoffman, Girlfriend’s Day.

In the movie, Odenkirk, as a greeting card writer, tries to clear his name from being accused of murder.

Like, Beasts of No Nation, you’ll have the chance to see it in limited release in theaters as well as on Netflix.

Between Better Call Saul, With Bob & David, this film, and probably more on the way, we’re glad to see Odenkirk back in the limelight as big as he has ever been.
