Dan Harmon’s Krapopolis Gets a Third Season Renewal Order Before Even Premiering

March 2, 2023
News
dan harmon, fox, krapopolis

At this point, we’ve been teased plenty for Dan Harmon’s non-Rick & Morty animated series, Krapopolis, that has set to premiere on Fox indefinintely. That’s the thing; it hasn’t even premiered yet. Despite years of first looks, exclusive clips, and even exclusive NFT Krapopolis content, the show itself has actually hit the air/streaming platforms and, this week, Fox announced that Krapopolis will be getting a third season.

Fox has long since been a network titan when it comes to adult animation and continue to do so with a programming block of The Simpsons, Bob’s Burgers, The Great North, and Family Guy. Adult Swim and Netflix have made their mark with several series from Aqua Teen Hunger Force to Big Mouth, but they haven’t lasted as long as the dynasty that is Fox Animation. With that in mind, it’s quite the to see top brass at Fox, especially in a time where TV is shrinking their production and programming slates for cost saving measures, to hand out a third season to Harmon’s show that envisions the pettiest version of various gods across cultures trying to make the ideal human city.

As astounding as that is, it’s hopeful to see a broadcast network actually have faith enough in their product to give it room to grow, evolve, and, perhaps, become another legacy adult animated series to follow in the footsteps left by Matt Groening and Loren Bouchard.

Get Your First Look at Dan Harmon’s Latest Creation, “Krapopolis”

News

Community, Rick and Morty, and Harmontown are all proud hallmarks for Dan Harmon that will likely stand the test of a very long time. So, naturally, whatever he’s on to next will be so highly anticipated that there’s probably not even a fully accurate metric for it. Krapopolis, his latest series that will premiere on Fox next year, is no exception even though it feels like we’ve heard about it being in the works for years now.

Krapopolis will follow an attempt by Greek gods to not run one of the world’s first cities into the ground. Both Greek mythology and history point towards plenty of narrative that is ripe for Harmon’s blazing, searing, meta-satirical style. You can see for yourself in this first look, unveiled at SDCC, here.

Pick of the Day: Harmontown Reunion Show 2/21

News

Looking back from this moment, it would seem that the last bit that you’ve heard from Harmontown was eons ago. Actually, it was just near the end of 2019, just as the before times were coming to an end.

Then, we all have had a collective lived experience of living the longest days and weeks of our lives leading up to what seems like a decade later for a Harmontown reunion. Yes, you did read that right. There will be a virtual gathering of Dan Harmon, Jeff B. Davis, Spencer Crittenden, Rob Schrab along with very, very special guests Emily Gordon and Kumail Nanjiani later this month via live-streaming platform, House Seats.

For the uninitiated or those who it has been so long that the memory of the before times seems like a faint candle in the distance, Dan Harmon and the Harmontown gang really made an official session of Harmontown whatever they’d like, which might anything ranging from in-depth conversation the inner-workings of entertainment to the complexities and nuances of life to Dan using a vocoder to freestyle.

So, do not miss this Harmontown Reunion set to live-stream Feb. 21st at 5PM PT/8PM ET (it’ll be available to watch up afterwards until 2/28 9PM PT/12AM ET). Tickets for live-stream access are only $15 and you best get them here.

Fox’s Latest Animated Comedy Will Be Set in Mythical Ancient Greece from Dan Harmon & Bento Box

February 8, 2021
News
adult animation, bento box entertainment, dan harmon, fox

(via Deadline)

With Dan Harmon’s track record at this point, odds are that you’ll catch whatever animated comedy that’s he putting out. The sheer domination of Rick & Morty across television is enough hold up this claim.

So, Fox is betting big on this notion as they have given a series order to a Harmon series that will be produced by acclaimed animation studio Bento Box Entertainment (the folks behind Bob’s Burgers). You can see that Harmon has built quite the sandbox to play with (and alternatively destroy and reframe) with the show’s setting in mythical Ancient Greece following mortals, gods, and monsters trying desperately to not ruin one of civilization’s first attempts at a city.

We can already imagine the whipsmart writing and the sort of play within and outside of the tomes of Greek Mythology. If you can think of Rick Sanchez as a flawed god, Harmon ought to have a field day with a whole crew of them.

An interesting tidbit to this series order is that Fox will own the whole series and thus broadcast it on their channels as well as funnel it through on the streaming end through their very own streaming service, Tubi. If you have followed the rise and fall of streaming of services in recent years, they do seem to depend on marquee shows (i.e. what would Disney Plus be without The Mandalorian and conversely, look what happened to Quibi).

Sure, you’ll be able to watch it on linear TV, but are you going to go in on another streaming service w/Tubi? We’ll just have to wait and see how fervent Harmon’s fans are in the next year and how good of a trailer they cut for the show.

Pick of the Day: Heat Vision and Jack Reunion 10/18

News

Heat Vision and Jack is perhaps one of the most renowned TV pilots that never got made into series (The Hollywood Reporter named their entire comic books/sci-fi column after it, FYI). Created by Dan Harmon and Rob Schrab with Ben Stiller directing and Jack Black starring, Heat Vision and Jack was one of those cult favorites that definitely signaled something special for everyone involved. Those in the know got their first glimpse of the meta and irreverent humor that would become a sort of signature of Harmon and Schrab in the years to come with this pilot.

So, in support of World Central Kitchen, an org dedicated to feeding folks who have fallen victim to natural disasters, Harmon, Schrab, and Black are doing an exclusive, virtual Heat Vision and Jack Reunion to reminisce and doing a live table read.

This very special reuniting of Heat Vision and Jack is set for Sun. Oct. 18th at 5PM PT/8PM ET. Tickets are $12.50 and you ought to snag them up quick here.

“Seven Stages to Achieve Eternal Bliss” Trailer Hints at a Dark, Yet Fun “Cult” Comedy

March 27, 2020
News

Having played the festival circuit two years ago, Seven Stages to Achieve Eternal Bliss from director Vivieno Caldinelli and writers Clayton Hewitson, Christopher Hewitson, and Justin Jones came out last week, online of course (at Amazon), as a curious, dark (yet slightly upbeat?) comedy. It follows a couples’ new home that also seems to be a site for a cult’s ritual suicide. Rather than pack everything back into boxes, they opt to stick around and maybe help the cult members in their journey? A nice, absurdist premise could be pretty handy right now.

Featuring a very robust cast of comedy favorites including a star turn from Kate Micucci as well as Dan Harmon, Taika Waititi, Maria Bamford, Dana Gould, Mark McKinney, and more, the trailer for Seven Stages to Achieve Eternal Bliss has our curiosity peaked. See for yourself here.

If anything, seeing Taika Waititi as a cult leader is an oddly refreshing image.

It has been so long since the season 3 finale of Rick and Morty, it feels like perhaps we’re in an alternate dimension from October 2017.

However, as far as we can tell, we’re still in dimension C-137 and, thankfully, new episodes of season 4 are just around the corner. In fact, 5 new episodes are coming, starting Sunday, Nov. 10th at 11:30PM on Adult Swim.

Get delicious, very gooey, juicy taste of what’s to come with Rick and Morty’s season 4 trailer here.

Dan Harmon EP’ing Rap Album by Comedian (and Big Harmontown Fan) Rob Tanchum

Dan and Harmontown Comptroller Jeff B. Davis will be on the album that started by Rob Tanchum recording and releasing his own song referencing Dan’s own freestyle raps on Harmontown. The album itself has a concept that seems like a fresh scheme from Rick’s lab.

The record sees Tanchum play a depressed loser from Earth, who is abducted by alien scientists, played by Harmon and Jeff Davis, who probe his unconscious mind and extract a concept album of self-loathing, id-driven rap songs.

August 21st is when Disturbed, Depressed, and Inadequate comes out via Starburns Industries’ SBI Press.

This sure looks like one of those rare, but wonderful cases where dreams do come true.

Justin Roiland Says There Will Be No More Big Hiatuses Between Seasons of “Rick and Morty”

Since there’s more of a guarantee of Rick and Morty to come along (i.e. Adult Swim ordering more than 70 eps.), the wait time between seasons will be way less.

Hopefully, that will satiate even the most extreme of Rick and Morty fans and perhaps avoid another McDonald’s Szechuan sauce debacle.

Rick And Morty Renewed for 70 Episodes in Long Term Deal Between Dan Harmon, Justin Roiland, and Adult Swim

Just like you shouldn’t really worry about that annoying Avengers: Infinity War cliffhanger, you shouldn’t have worried about the long-awaited renewal of TV’s most popular comedy (a feat made more impressive by the fact that Rick and Morty aired on Adult Swim, a far cry from primetime on a traditional broadcast network).

So, it looks like we’ll be getting enough Rick and Morty to last us through the Trump Administration and whatever other horrors lie ahead in the future. Thank goodness. Now that you know that 70 episodes are guaranteed, you can rest easy (i.e. watch a bunch of other TV) until season 4 and beyond arrive.

‘Corpse Tub’ Appears to Be a Dark Comedy About a Cult That You Will Be Obsessing Over

‘Corpse Tub’ Appears to Be a Dark Comedy About a Cult That You Will Be Obsessing Over

On one level, you have Kate Micucci and Sam Huntington dealing with the fact that the tub in their suspiciously cheap apartment is a key component in a ritual of suicidal cult with a leader played by Taika Waititi.

On another level, you have Dan Harmon actually starring as a cop trying desperately to sell his life story in a script.

On yet another level, the rest of the cast is rounded off by such wondrous comedy folks as Maria Bamford, Mark McKinney, Rhea Seehorn, Brian Posehn, Dana Gould, Josh Brener, J Lee, Brian Girard, Lilan Bowden, Jon Dore, Mindy Sterling, Michael St. Michaels, Craig Cackowski, Britney Young, Ryan Simpkins and Ron Lynch.

We try to stop ourselves from getting too preemptively excited about a film that has yet to be made, but this does sound pretty magical in a darkly funny way, maybe akin to The Lobster. So, suffice it to say that our hopes are indeed up for this.

Rick & Morty Scores Highest Ratings in Adult Swim History and Is Now TV’s #1 Comedy

Finally, something in this godforsaken year is going right.

“Sunday’s Season 3 finale drew a 3.9/821 in adults 18-24 and a 3.2/1521 in adults 18-34 in Live+ same day, and was the most-watched telecast of the day across cable with adults 18-24, 18-34 and 18-49, according to Adult Swim and Nielsen.”

Keep in mind that this is especially impressive given Rick & Morty’s late night time slot that’s on a network that uses a limited time slot on another TV network.

One can only hope that this will be where a tide could possibly turn toward making more quality, original series rather than reboots, revivals, etc.

As part of a chat with Vulture, Justin Roiland, Dan Harmon, Ryan Ridley, Spencer Grammer, and Sarah Chalke (AKA cast and creators of Rick and Morty) not only improvised what a few scenes from a crossover of Rick and Morty and SpongeBob Squarepants might be like, but also got some accompanying animation to really bring it to life.

Spoiler alert, the crossover is definitely more Rick and Morty than it is SpongeBob.

In case you weren’t aware, Rick and Morty had its humble beginnings from a beautiful thing called Channel 101.

Channel 101 is the indie TV institution created by Dan Harmon and Rob Schrab that still runs to this day with its own self-sustaining creative community. It’s also the place where Harmon met his Rick and Morty co-creator Justin Roiland.

Get more of that story in this first part of an Adult Swim behind-the-scenes series that explains how the brilliant hit, Rick and Morty came to be.

Rick and Morty Had Its Own After Show “Ricking Morty” for Season 3 Premiere

Uncategorized

First off, take note of a few things to take away from the headline on the Rick and Morty after-show, Ricking Morty.

Rick and Morty is the first animated series and the first comedy series (outside of some late night bits and some sketches from sketch comedy shows) to get a legitimate (i.e. put on by the network) “after show” a la Walking Dead, Breaking Bad, Mr. Robot, Game of Thrones, etc.

Though not as serialized as all the other dramas we just name-checked, every episode of Rick and Morty has so much to unpack and analyze underneath the brightly colored, uber-clever, hilarious exterior, which makes room for plenty of discussion in an after show.

We can only hope that this is a recurring thing and not just a special one-off for the premiere only, especially since it’s billed as the Official Rick and Morty After-Show.

Also, you’ll note that the host is the very funny Sam Jay (and not Chris Hardwick or any other famous TV personality). We’re glad to see that whoever made the call gave Jay a shot that is well deserved.

Watch Ricking Morty here (after you watch the premiere of season 3 here).

An integral part of the premiere episode of Rick and Morty season 3, as you might know, is McDonalds promotional Szechuan Sauce.

Well, after the livestreaming of the premiere on April Fools’ Day this year, it would seem McDonalds got in on the fun and sent this package to Rick and Morty co-creator Justin Roiland.

We can only imagine what other multinational companies will bend to the will of Rick and Morty season 3.

We shall see as the season premiere is tonight at 11:30PM on Adult Swim.

There is no official release date yet, but, if it comes out before or during this year’s holiday season, we’re guessing it’ll be one of the more popular gifts that people will be buying up.
