1. A slight break from the horrors of the world is coming because Maria Bamford is coming out with a new special, Local Act, next month, taped lovingly at one of LA comedy’s most intimate venues, Public Displays of Altadena.

2. SF Sketchfest, one of the world’s biggest comedy festivals, just made its first (of many) line-up announcements, and it’s already more than stuffed than any stocking will be this holiday season. Take a peep at (many of) your favorites coming to SF from Jan. 18th-Feb. 4th. Tickets go on sale this Sun. at 10AM at sfsketchfest.com.

3. Nathan Fielder calls out NY Times for correction for calling his acting “stale” on Kimmel alongside Emma Stone. Please enjoy Fielder looking like Leon the Professional and forcing Jimmy to call the NY Times after hours here.

4. Take a gander at the trailer for Netflix’s latest stand-up series that, per usual, has the most bland sounding, uninspiring name, Verified Stand-Up, but pretty great comics in Asif Ali, Dulcé Sloan, Gianmarco Soresi, Isiah Kelly, Leslie Liao, Nimesh Patel, Robby Hoffman, Rosebud Baker, Sabrina Wu, and Vanessa Gonzalez. Look for it on Netflix on Nov. 28th. *Please never forget that Netflix could come up with something slicker and catchier that could be translated into however many dozen languages they stream in.

5. Eric Andre is headed out on the road once again with The Eric Andre Show Live next month, which means America better get ready for a bunch of desks getting annihilated. Get tickets at ericandretour.com.

6. Taika Waititi won’t be doing a Thor 5 even if the MCU wants to do one (THR). Given the reception of Love and Thunder and the MCU’s lukewarm 2024, it’s best that they go back to the drawing board for their next phase (or reimagine the idea of doing 10 years of movies that coalesce into one 20 minute battle scene).

7. David Letterman will be the guest on a post-Thanksgiving ep. of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert after nearly 9 years after signing off from the Ed Sullivan Theater. Any takers on if he’s going beard or no beard for his big reunion?

Eight and a half years after David Letterman signed off as host of CBS’ The Late Show, the comedian is returning to the Ed Sullivan Theater on Monday, Nov. 30, to be interviewed by his successor, Stephen Colbert, for the first time https://t.co/fCYuTJnojI

9. We’ll leave you with this: R.I.P. Dex Carvey, who made his way with a full heart through the LA comedy scene over the last several years.

Reservation Dogs Season 3 Trailer Promises More of What Everyone Loves About Reservation Dogs

July 6, 2023
News
fx, reservation dogs, season 3, sterlin harjo, taika waititi, trailer

Finally, in less than a month, Sterlin Harjo and Taika Waititi are returning with the third season of Reservation Dogs starting Wed. Aug. 2nd. This latest round of their critically acclaimed and award winning FX series follows the eponymous Reservation Dogs finding themselves yet again, though, back at where their started (not to tip the hat to those who haven’t binged their way through the first two seasons already).

From the looks of this first official trailer for this latest season, more of the magically real, offbeat indigenous humor and captivating pathos are on display, so much so that it might actually make up for the bad taste that Taika’s latest Thor movie has left in our mouths.

See for yourself with a first full length at season 3 here and try and see if there’s something to FX focusing on the name “Bear”. Again, look for this latest season of Reservation Dogs to get going on Aug. 2nd.

Taika Waititi’s Next Great Movie Might Be “Next Goal Wins”

April 27, 2023
News

Understandably, there’s a lot of pressure that comes with making something as daring and imaginative as JoJo Rabbit and pulling off an original, critically acclaimed box office hit like Thor: Ragnarok. Everyone in Hollywood/the world wants the Waititi touch as a director, writer, and actor. According to IMDB, Taika is in production on the long awaited Akira adaptation and a TV series Interior Chinatown. That’s in addition to being in pre-production on Tower of Terror, The Incal, Time Bandits, and developing a TBD Star Wars flick to boot.

That said, what we’re looking forward to isn’t his next tentpole, big franchise movie (cough cough Thor: Love and Thunder left so very much to be desired), but something more along the lines of what put Taika on the map in the first place (i.e. comedies close to home, both in heart and in physical location). Hunt for the Wilderpeople and the original What We Do In The Shadows movie.

Lucky for us all, that’s exactly what’s queued up next with Next Goal Wins. Taika follows the real life story of what has been heralded as one of the worst losing streaks of all time by the American Samoa soccer/football team. Michael Fassbender plays a coach who gets relegated from coaching for the U.S. to the lowly ranks of coaching for an American territory that hasn’t even scored a goal an international match, much less won. It has all the makings of signature charming, underdog, heartwarming, yet sassy comedy that Waititi is known for.

See for yourself in this first trailer for Next Goal Wins here, then look for it in theaters near you beginning Nov. 17th.

Reservation Dogs Season 2 Trailer Promises a More Than Worthy Follow-Up

July 7, 2022
News
fx, reservation dogs, season 2, sterlin harjo, taika waititi

Sterlin Harjo & Taika Waititi’s dramedy, Reservation Dogs, set on a reservation in Oklahoma captured the hearts and minds of so many and shone a much needed and very human light on modern day life “on the res”, especially during those teen years. With plenty of acclaim and awards that came with the series’ first run, there is almost endless amounts of anticipation for season 2 following the journeys of Elora Danan, Bear, Willie Jack, Cheese, and all of their friends, families, and enemies.

The official trailer for season 2 of Reservation Dogs dropped yesterday and it seems to hit a sweet spot of grounded absurdity and pathos, maybe even more emphatically than season 1. Elora Danan continues her perhaps impossible quest for the promise land of California, Bear wrestles with adulthood having no manual, and there’s a much better indigenous version of a Zoltar-machine. Give it a watch and see for yourself here, then look for its premiere on FX/Hulu on Wed. Aug. 3rd.

Rhys Darby Is Your New Favorite Pirate in Teaser for “Our Flag Means Death”

January 20, 2022
News
david jenkins, hbo max, leslie jones, our flag means death, rhys darby, taika waititi

Year and years ago, back when Johnny Depp was mostly scandal free, the world fell in love with him as Jack Sparrow, a free-wheeling, fun loving pirate at the heart of the Pirates of the Caribbean film franchise.

Of course, on this of 2022, things are much different and Depp doesn’t curry the same sort of a favor with his movies (or his band Hollywood Vampires). Fret not though as there is a new fun loving set of pirates on the horizon that could very well take place of the slot that everyone held for the Disney adaptation of their famous ride.

Our Flag Means Death from David Jenkins (People of Earth) will have the very lovable pairing of Rhys Darby and Taika Waititi play real life pirates Stede Bonnet and Blackbeard, respectively. Bonnet, though nowhere near as famous as Blackbeard, ditched his life as an aristocrat for the high seas and a black flag and ought to be a damn good time with Rhys Darby bringing him to life in this series. Also, this would mark Taika’s second time as a famous villain, previously playing Hitler in Jojo Rabbit and now, the infamous Blackbeard.

Get a taste of what all that comedic piracy will be like with this teaser here.

That should be enough for you to make sure you have HBO Max when Our Flag Means Death drops. In case it’s not, know that Leslie Jones will also be showing up in this historical pirate comedy to, of course, regulate.

Taika Waititi’s on Board for Another Space Epic, The Incal, Even More Out There Than Thor

News
alejandro jodorowsky, jemaine clement, taika waititi, the incal

When all is said and done, Taika Waititi’s imagination might be one of the most captivating and entertaining of this century (and most certainly of the last two decades). Whether it be wayward vampires, MCU heroes, or WWII Germany, Taika has ceaselessly dazzled with his films, which brilliantly paint with all of the emotions, but also happen to be very funny.

I'm honoured to announce I’ll be bringing the maestro, the hero, the true creator, Alejandro Jodorowsky’s masterpiece THE INCAL to the big screen. Also stoked to be teaming up again with @jemaineclement and @peterbwarren on this. @alejodorowsky #Moebius https://t.co/a6rvCqV5jq pic.twitter.com/I8cbafw5hO

— Taika Waititi (@TaikaWaititi) November 4, 2021

That’s why it’s exciting that Taika is going back into outer space, sans the MCU, with his next film and will be teaming up with long time collaborator/accomplice Jemaine Clement as well as Peter Warren and is going to be an adaptation of another monumental imagination of our times, the one from Alejandro Jodorwosky.

Jodorowsky’s attempt to adapt Dune decades before David Lynch and Denis Villeneuve unfortunately didn’t amount to any sort of finished film (or footage at all, for that matter). That said, Alejandro took the spirit of what his adaptation was going to be into a graphic novel, L’Incal. Similar to its inspiration Dune, it had quite the success as a comic book and is often hailed among the best of the art form. L’Incal doesn’t follow a magical prince, but rather a bumbling detective in the middle of an existential crisis who just happen to stumble on one of the most powerful artifacts in the whole of the universe.

As irony would have it, all these years later, a massive, studio backed adaptation of Dune has hit theaters, despite the ongoing presence of the pandemic, and L’Incal is not only be made into a full fledged movie, The Incal, but being done with the sheen and marvel of Taika Waititi attached. There is so much potential here for something truly great, perhaps more indelible than the film adaptation of Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy.

Keep tabs on Taika’s The Incal at theincalmovie.com and see the announcement between Taika and Jodorowsky here.

Get Your First Look at Sterlin Harjo and Taika Waititi’s “Reservation Dogs”

The return of the film festival circuit has kicked up such a dust that one might have overlooked the very first glimpse of a brand new comedy, Reservation Dogs (yes, they do their own take on the iconic walk in Reservoir Dogs), that charmingly takes on what life is for indigenous Gen Z kids on the reservation.

Coming from the minds of Sterlin Harjo and Taika Waititi, the trailer has the sort of promise that keeps FX’s track record for original comedies pretty damn good (Atlanta, What We Do In The Shadows). You can sense Waititi’s touch (maybe a bit akin to Hunt for the Wilderpeople) in a world that isn’t quite seen a lot, especially from the perspective of indigenous people. Above all, Reservation Dogs looks like a good bunch of a fun with a lovable crew of misfits.

See for yourself in the Reservation Dogs trailer here, then look for it to start streaming on Aug. 9th on Hulu.

A What We Do In The Shadows Spin-Off “Wellington Paranormal” Returns To Where It All Started, New Zealand

March 24, 2021
News

(via Deadline)

If you have followed us for any amount of time, we make no secret about our deep love and affinity for What We Do In The Shadows. Both the 2014 movie and the hit FX series are some of the funniest pieces of comedy to be committed to screen in recent memory. Taika Waititi and Jemaine Clement have made, what we believe, a foundational comedy franchise in this era of comedy defined by its own meta-textuality as well as managing to stand out in the increasingly crowded TV field in this ongoing, new Golden Era of television.

The original movie took place in New Zealand and the series followed a new unlikely bunch of vampires all the way to Staten Island. The success of the film led to the adaptation for TV for American audiences and now, that has excitingly led to a new spin-off series from Waititi and Clement that will take the What We Do in the Shadows universe back to NZ, but will air on the CW and then stream on HBO Max right after. This brand new spin-off, Wellington Paranormal, will harken from the movie following those very same police officers in Wellington, New Zealand that unfortunately are beset with the responsibility of having to deal with supernatural hijinks perpetrated by vampires, werewolves, witches, etc. while trying to just get by.

So, What We Do In The Shadows didn’t get nearly the amount of recognition it deserves this awards season thus far, but this expansion of the WWDITS universe might make up for it.

FX’s Orders Latest Series “Reservation Dogs” from Sterlin Harjo and Taika Waititi

News

(via Deadline)

FX has been near flawless with their comedy programming over the last several years. Better Things, Atlanta, and What We Do In The Shadows all serve as critical and commercial hits for the network (often getting nominated or winning Emmys and the like). They don’t look to stop their streak any time soon as the cabler just picked up what we suspect will be golden nugget for them in Reservation Dogs, a series following the lives of Indigenous kids in Oklahoma causing trouble (and also fixing it), from the minds of Sterlin Harjo and Taika Waititi.

The series will draw from Harjo’s childhood, but we’re sure Waititi’s trademark subversive cleverness will be well woven into the show.   Waititi, of course, is one of the minds behind the aforementioned What We Do In The Shadows (as well as JoJo Rabbit and Hunt For the Wilderpeople), and collaborated with Harjo on the pilot for FX. It’s intriguing as both Harjo and Waititi come from indigenous backgrounds, though from different sides of the planet.

With all of this in mind, we can’t wait to see what the show really is and hope that it’s timed out so it airs in between seasons of What We Do In The Shadows.

Desus & Mero Bring the Hype in Announcing This Year’s Black List

Every year around this time, The Black List announces the most popular screenplays around Tinseltown that have yet to be produced into actual movies. Normally, it would just be announced on social media and a .PDF would make the rounds with titles, names, and loglines.

Yet, Franklin Leonard, the creator of The Black List, has opted for a much slicker announcement, even slicker than most award shows by tapping Desus Nice & The Kid Mero. Awards shows like The Emmys and The Oscars have a couple celebrities get dressed up way too early in the morning and plainly read nominees. In contrast, Desus & Nice bring the signature riffing off-the-cuff while reading off all the screenplays that made it into the 2020 edition of The Black List.

Leonard himself predicts that Desus & Mero will host The Oscars and we sincerely, deeply hope that he’s right.

Please enjoy the whole Black List announcement with Desus & Mero here.

Watch Trailer for Latest New Zealand Export “Baby Done”

News
baby done, rose matafeo, taika waititi

Over the last several years, New Zealand has give us Americans quite a bit of heartfelt and brilliant comedy whether it be Flight of the Conchords or Taika Waititi.

New Zealand comedian Rose Matafeo was set to be next in line of Kiwi comedy exports to the U.S. and she had just started making headway in America as the pandemic took hold. She already had an appearance on Conan and her debut special, Horndog, was set to drop on HBO Max.

Everything came to a grinding halt/got postponed/rescheduled/cancelled in March and Matafeo’s ascent in the States had to slow down, but only a little. Her special still went ahead and premiered on HBO Max, thanks to Team Coco, and now, Matafeo is starring in a movie, Baby Done, from Sophie Henderson and Curtis Vowell and presented by none other than Taika himself.

As you can see in the Baby Done trailer for this coming-of-age-into-motherhood tale, it very much could be a vehicle for Matafeo as she shines just in two minutes.

Taika Waititi to Direct and Co-Write a Star Wars Movie

May 4, 2020
News
may the fourth be with you, star wars, taika waititi

(via Deadline)

This news almost seems inevitable as Taika Waititi has not only proven his worth in the billion dollar tentpole franchise realm with Thor: Ragnarok (on top of being a beloved indie comedy writer/director), but has also done right by the Star Wars universe with voicing a droid and being the season finale director of The Mandalorian.

So, Waititi will indeed putting his particular golden touch (that always seems to include his beloved off-beat sense of humor) with an entire Star Wars feature film by directing and co-writing with Krysty Wilson-Cairns (1917). It has yet to be even slightly detailed as to what Taika might be tackling in the Star Wars canon, but we do hope that, whatever it would end up being, that it would be the comedic jewel that Thor: Ragnarok is to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Maybe he’d take a stab at redoing/reviving/rebooting the Star Wars Holiday Special? We have full faith that he’d be able to do something truly magical with that.

“Seven Stages to Achieve Eternal Bliss” Trailer Hints at a Dark, Yet Fun “Cult” Comedy

News

Having played the festival circuit two years ago, Seven Stages to Achieve Eternal Bliss from director Vivieno Caldinelli and writers Clayton Hewitson, Christopher Hewitson, and Justin Jones came out last week, online of course (at Amazon), as a curious, dark (yet slightly upbeat?) comedy. It follows a couples’ new home that also seems to be a site for a cult’s ritual suicide. Rather than pack everything back into boxes, they opt to stick around and maybe help the cult members in their journey? A nice, absurdist premise could be pretty handy right now.

Featuring a very robust cast of comedy favorites including a star turn from Kate Micucci as well as Dan Harmon, Taika Waititi, Maria Bamford, Dana Gould, Mark McKinney, and more, the trailer for Seven Stages to Achieve Eternal Bliss has our curiosity peaked. See for yourself here.

If anything, seeing Taika Waititi as a cult leader is an oddly refreshing image.

Taika Waititi Horror Comedy “The Auteur” Starring Jude Law in Development at Showtime

After JoJo Rabbit, it seems as though Taika Waititi will be given an infinite sandbox to play with (as it should be). This latest project (adapted from the eponymous graphic novel from Rick Spears, James Callahan, and Luigi Anderson) will star Jude Law, but also follow a production of horror movie gone gonzo as the cast and crew get stuck with a serial killer on the backlot where they’re shooting. With Waititi’s touch, we’re sure that, if this gets a series order, it’ll be some truly twisted fun (maybe a bit like Sion Sono’s Why Don’t You Play in Hell? where a filmmaker makes a mob movie during a real mob war).

Truly, we would love to see what Waititi gets to do with a potentially even darker than What We Do In The Shadows horror comedy.

Jojo Rabbit Is a Great, Definitive Piece of Satire for 2019 and Cements Waititi’s Legacy as an Auteur

Even though you probably are well aware of JoJo Rabbit’s premise of a fledgling Nazi Youth, who has a goofy Hitler as an imaginary friend, having to confront the inherent flaws in his ideology and its branding as an “anti-hate satire” (and that they’ll be playing David Bowie’s Heroes at some point), Taika Waititi still manages to delight, surprise, pull your heart strings oh-so-tight, have you double over laugh, and question your own biases and tolerances with his latest film.

Waititi makes a very effective piece of satire (almost Jonathan Swift-life in concept) for our times and also manages to be both edgy and uplifting at the same time. Such a range might actually be his signature style as an aforementioned auteur and wonderfully singular voice in comedy when all is said and done. Hunt for the Wilderpeople, What We Do in Shadows, Thor: Ragnarok and now JoJo Rabbit do make for a damn fine resume.

Also, the whole cast, Roman Griffin Davis, Scarlett Johansson, Taika, Thomasin McKenzie, and Sam Rockwell put on performances that will definitely stand out (as they balance Waititi’s sense of play and the horror of the Third Reich in WWII) in the breadth of their filmographies, which are already pretty impressive as is.

JoJo Rabbit is in now playing and you can (and should) get tickets for a theater near you.

In this chat with Jimmy Kimmel, Taika Waititi really showcases the sort of magnetism and charisma that one would need to play Hitler in a daring and innovative satire and also helm the funniest corner of the Marvel universe amongst many other things.

Even while sleeping, it’d seem that Taika is still pretty damn adorable.

JoJo Rabbit’s Full Trailer Promises a Brilliant (and Very Fun) Piece of Satire

When first hearing about Taika Waititi’s project where a kid has Hitler as an imaginary friend, one had to wonder what exactly the celebrated writer/director/actor had up his sleeve (especially in these days where white supremacy seems to be on the rise again).

That being said, over years over great pieces of cinema, we should have faith that Waititi would deliver something special. From the looks of the just released full trailer for JoJo Rabbit, Waititi might be delivering his most poignant work yet. Thus far, it appears to be a sharply crafted satire that follows why being a Nazi is bad from the perspective caught up in the Nazi Youth, but still full of Waititi’s trademark playful sense of irony.

There’s promise here that might warrant timing whatever standing ovations that JoJo Rabbit would get in its opening week

See for yourself in the trailer here, then look for JoJo Rabbit’s theatrical release on Oct. 18th.

Taika Waititi’s Next Film to Be an American Samoa Soccer Movie ‘Next Goal Wins’

No matter the genre, it seems as though Taika Waititi manages to put his stamp of offbeat humor and heart into everything he does. Hunt for the Wilderpeople to Thor: Ragnarok to the very intriguing, upcoming JoJo Rabbit showcases quite the range while still being Waititi.

So, with that said, we’re definitely on board with the idea that he’s doing an inspirational sports movie about an American Samoa soccer team transforming from losers to winners based on a documentary from a few years ago of the same name, Next Goal Wins.

In fact, this might just be the default movie that plays during school when there’s a sub or something (taking place of The Sandlot or Remember the Titans).

Taika Waititi has built up such a lovely resume with everything from What We Do In the Shadows to Hunt for the Wilderpeople to Thor: Ragnarok that he can really swing big, which is what he seems to be doing with his latest, JoJo Rabbit.

JoJo Rabbit follows a timid young child in Nazi Germany that ends up having an imaginary friend in the visage of Adolf Hitler, albeit a goofy one played by Taika. The premise has the titular JoJo reckon with himself as he finds his mother is hiding a Jewish girl. Billed as an “anti-hate satire” (perhaps the first time that’s ever been a phrase?), Waititi continues to have our interest peaked here. The tone and satirical walking-the-line seems like anything else we’ve seen before just from this teaser (we can only imagine what lies ahead with a full trailer).

See for yourself here with the just released teaser, then look for JoJo Rabbit in theaters on Oct. 18th.

We guess Thor 4 was inevitable, so we’re glad to hear that Taika Waititi will return to direct the follow-up to Thor: Ragnarok.

Terry Gilliam’s Time Bandits TV Adaptation  from Taika Waititi in Development at Apple

We all saw what Taika Waititi got to do in the Marvel Cinematic Universe with Thor: Ragnarok. Not only did he manage to please the overlords and fanboys of the MCU, but make what will probably remembered as one of the funniest superhero movies in recent memory.

To imagine what Taika might do in the endless, infinite sandbox of Terry Gilliam’s Time Bandits is just a wonderful dream and we really can’t imagine a better person for the gig. Apple’s development slate with an increasing number of projects as intriguing as this one, just keeps getting better and better.

Ten episodes based on one of the 2010s funniest comedies is coming to FX next Spring. Taika Waititi and Jemaine Clement are at the helm and setting the TV series adaptation in NYC.

Taika Waititi’s & Jemaine Clement ‘What We Do In The Shadows’ Gets FX Pilot Order

A few things to note here.

1) If this goes to series, FX’s comedy line-up will be Baskets, Atlanta, Better Things, Archer, and What We Do In The Shadows (not to mention It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia and You’re The Worst on FXx). That’s nearly flawless as far as we can see.

2) What We Do In The Shadows has an actual shot of being made into a TV show stateside. If you enjoyed Thor: Ragnarok at all (and somehow don’t know about What We Do In The Shadows), you could be in for a very wonderful surprise.

3) This is a great reason to go rewatch one of the funniest movies in recent memory.
