Taika Waititi’s on Board for Another Space Epic, The Incal, Even More Out There Than Thor

November 4, 2021
News
alejandro jodorowsky, jemaine clement, taika waititi, the incal

When all is said and done, Taika Waititi’s imagination might be one of the most captivating and entertaining of this century (and most certainly of the last two decades). Whether it be wayward vampires, MCU heroes, or WWII Germany, Taika has ceaselessly dazzled with his films, which brilliantly paint with all of the emotions, but also happen to be very funny.

I'm honoured to announce I’ll be bringing the maestro, the hero, the true creator, Alejandro Jodorowsky’s masterpiece THE INCAL to the big screen. Also stoked to be teaming up again with @jemaineclement and @peterbwarren on this. @alejodorowsky #Moebius https://t.co/a6rvCqV5jq pic.twitter.com/I8cbafw5hO

— Taika Waititi (@TaikaWaititi) November 4, 2021

That’s why it’s exciting that Taika is going back into outer space, sans the MCU, with his next film and will be teaming up with long time collaborator/accomplice Jemaine Clement as well as Peter Warren and is going to be an adaptation of another monumental imagination of our times, the one from Alejandro Jodorwosky.

Jodorowsky’s attempt to adapt Dune decades before David Lynch and Denis Villeneuve unfortunately didn’t amount to any sort of finished film (or footage at all, for that matter). That said, Alejandro took the spirit of what his adaptation was going to be into a graphic novel, L’Incal. Similar to its inspiration Dune, it had quite the success as a comic book and is often hailed among the best of the art form. L’Incal doesn’t follow a magical prince, but rather a bumbling detective in the middle of an existential crisis who just happen to stumble on one of the most powerful artifacts in the whole of the universe.

As irony would have it, all these years later, a massive, studio backed adaptation of Dune has hit theaters, despite the ongoing presence of the pandemic, and L’Incal is not only be made into a full fledged movie, The Incal, but being done with the sheen and marvel of Taika Waititi attached. There is so much potential here for something truly great, perhaps more indelible than the film adaptation of Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy.

Keep tabs on Taika’s The Incal at theincalmovie.com and see the announcement between Taika and Jodorowsky here.

A What We Do In The Shadows Spin-Off “Wellington Paranormal” Returns To Where It All Started, New Zealand

(via Deadline)

If you have followed us for any amount of time, we make no secret about our deep love and affinity for What We Do In The Shadows. Both the 2014 movie and the hit FX series are some of the funniest pieces of comedy to be committed to screen in recent memory. Taika Waititi and Jemaine Clement have made, what we believe, a foundational comedy franchise in this era of comedy defined by its own meta-textuality as well as managing to stand out in the increasingly crowded TV field in this ongoing, new Golden Era of television.

The original movie took place in New Zealand and the series followed a new unlikely bunch of vampires all the way to Staten Island. The success of the film led to the adaptation for TV for American audiences and now, that has excitingly led to a new spin-off series from Waititi and Clement that will take the What We Do in the Shadows universe back to NZ, but will air on the CW and then stream on HBO Max right after. This brand new spin-off, Wellington Paranormal, will harken from the movie following those very same police officers in Wellington, New Zealand that unfortunately are beset with the responsibility of having to deal with supernatural hijinks perpetrated by vampires, werewolves, witches, etc. while trying to just get by.

So, What We Do In The Shadows didn’t get nearly the amount of recognition it deserves this awards season thus far, but this expansion of the WWDITS universe might make up for it.

Things Get a “Little” Strange When Craig Robinson Wears a Tam O’Shanter Hat in ‘Beverly Luff Linn’ Trailer

Often times, the best trailers get you intrigued with a movie without really telling you what’s going on. You’re confused, yet, maybe you want to see more.

Such is the case with the trailer for An Evening with Beverly Luff Linn, directed by Jim Hosking and co-written by Hosking and David Wike. There seems to be a caper afoot, but the hype over a stage show that stars a man named Beverly Luff Linn (played by Craig Robinson) in Scottish garb seems to take precedence over any confusion (even though it’s not quite clear what the show is).

See for yourself in the trailer here, then look for An Evening with Beverly Luff Linn in theaters and On Demand & Digital starting October 19th.

A big dose of the Flight of the Conchords might be a great thing to serve folks right now.

Luckily, an entire special, Flight of the Conchords: Live at the London Apollo is arriving at the beginning of October on HBO.

We’ll let Bret and Jemaine take it from here.

What We Do In The Shadows Gets Series Order at FX

Ten episodes based on one of the 2010s funniest comedies is coming to FX next Spring. Taika Waititi and Jemaine Clement are at the helm and setting the TV series adaptation in NYC.

FX’s comedy line-up is already pretty damn strong, but this will somehow, probably, make it better.

Taika Waititi’s & Jemaine Clement ‘What We Do In The Shadows’ Gets FX Pilot Order

A few things to note here.

1) If this goes to series, FX’s comedy line-up will be Baskets, Atlanta, Better Things, Archer, and What We Do In The Shadows (not to mention It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia and You’re The Worst on FXx). That’s nearly flawless as far as we can see.

2) What We Do In The Shadows has an actual shot of being made into a TV show stateside. If you enjoyed Thor: Ragnarok at all (and somehow don’t know about What We Do In The Shadows), you could be in for a very wonderful surprise.

3) This is a great reason to go rewatch one of the funniest movies in recent memory.

The Flight Of The Conchords Will Be Returning to HBO in the Form of a Comedy Special

This special will actually have Bret McKenzie and Jemaine Clement perform live in front of a big crowd in the UK that will air in May.

Details beyond that are sparse, but we can only hope that Kristen Schaal and Rhys Darby make some cameos as well.

Jemaine Clement and Bret McKenzie Are Deveoping a “Flight of the Conchords” Movie

The project is in infant stages, but the fact that it’s in stages at all is hope that we’ll all get to see the Flight of the Conchords once again.

Both Jemaine Clement and Bret McKenzie, best known as the musical comedy duo Flight of the Conchords, are at work on developing a feature length project centered around the Flight of the Conchords.

As we said before, there isn’t anyone else involved at this point, but we think it would be a big opportunity missed by anyone who passed on this and didn’t make sure that it not only got greenlit and made, but fast tracked as well.

Judd Apatow To Produce Jemaine Clement and Taika Waititi’s HBO Anthology Series

Though still largely under wraps, the series that Jemaine and Taika have been working on seems to be coming together.

Similar to the way American Horror Story uses the same cast for different stories, the episodes of this series from Clement and Waititi will use the same cast for stories ranging from time travel to dance contests.

The addition of Apatow should mean that this project is picking up steam and hopefully that will bring the series to the screen relatively soon.

A lot of misrepresentations about vampires have been floating around in our media for decades, but with the arrival of the “documentary” What We Do In The Shadows, Taika Waititi and Jemaine Clement can finally bring to light what it’s like being a vampire in the 21st century.

Specifically, they’d like to inform us all of 7 specific truths that you may or may not know about.

Also, go see What We Do In The Shadows as it’s playing in even more theaters now.

A few days ago we posted the Kickstarter campaign for Jemaine Clement and Taika Waititi’s What We Do In The Shadows to expand its U.S. release.

With only 5 hours to go before the campaign ends, they have exceeded their goal of $400K by raising $433,848. So, that means several cities throughout the country will get the benefit of seeing their vampire mockumentary that’s getting critical acclaim left and right.

Which cities and when it will come to said cities have yet to be all announced, but we will keep you updated.

So, along with David Cross’ Hits, score two for Kickstarter funded independent film releases in 2015.

Though the hilarious vampire mockumentary What We Do In The Shadows from Jemaine Clement and Taiki Waititi is going to play in limited release in LA and NYC on Feb. 13th, both Jemaine and Taika want to follow suit with David Cross’ Hits and expand the release to as many cities as possible around the good ol’ U.S. of A. They’re aiming for about 70.

So, to do this, they’re attempting to raise $400,000 to accomplish that goal on Kickstarter. As of this post, they’ve raised $289,863 and only have 5 more days, specifically until Feb. 12th 4:37PM, to crowdfund the rest.

The rewards are pretty great ranging from set visits and special screenings to baby onesies and cooking aprons.

So, please take the money you were going to spend on the corporate-created Valentine’s Day and make sure America gets to see What We Do In The Shadows. Your significant other will understand.

There is talk between Jemaine and Bret for The Flight of The Conchords to go on tour later this year. We hope this comes to fruition as they were both magical during their run for Funny or Die’s first Oddball Festival Comedy Tour.

Also, it would be the perfect thing to follow up the other major comedy tour this year from Weird Al Yankovic scheduled to end later this year.

New Zealand vampire mockumentary has probably not been fully formed as a sub genre yet, but, nonetheless, we’re still pretty excited that Jemaine Clement and Taika Waititi’s What We Do In The Shadows is coming stateside.

Funny or Die is now presenting the release and has made a date for Feb. 13th to roll What We Do In The Shadows out.

This is probably going to be a pretty good movie whether you’re celebrating Valentine’s Day that weekend or ardently ignoring it.

Jemaine Clement to Star in Indie Comedy ‘People Places Things’

While there was a bit of confusion as to what Jemaine Clement was up to with doing a show over at HBO, Clement next film role is clear cut.

James C. Strouse’s People Places Things will star Clement as a struggling graphic novelist that juggles family, heartbreak, etc. On top of that, there’s a very solid supporting cast in Stephanie Allynne, Jessica Williams, and Regina Hall.

It shouldn’t be surprising if this makes the rounds on the film festival circuit once it’s finished.

Jemaine Clement Clears Up All Confusion on The HBO Show He’s Writing with Taika Waititi

(via Vulture)

In a recent chat with Vulture, Jemaine Clement, after the Internet (us included) thought it might be the return of Flight of the Conchords, finally lays out what exactly he’s working on for HBO.

He and Taika Waititi, who are having a nice run with their movie What We Do In The Shadows are writing an anthology series where each episode will be completely different from each other except for the players that will be cast.

The 4 episodes that were ordered only have a script commitment and have a chance that they won’t be made.

So, now that you know that, cross your fingers that all of this comes to fruition.

Before dealing with the speculation as to what he will be doing 4 episodes of with HBO and if it’ll involve Bret McKenzie, Jemaine Clement has co-written and co-directed what seems to be a great tongue-and-cheek vampire mockumentary with Taiki Waititi called What We Do In The Shadows.

While playing at TIFF, it has picked up a distribution deal to play here in the States thanks to The Orchard and Unison Films. That’s great to hear so we’ll get to see what 4 vampires living in New Zealand dealing with modern life will be like.

Flight of the Conchords’ Bret and Jemaine might be back at it again and you might be able, in the same turn, stop holding your breath.

According to a recent interview with Jemaine Clement, HBO has commissioned four episodes of a new comedy from Jemaine. It’s unclear if it’s going to stem from the world of the series of Flight of the Conchords or if it’s going to be something different, hopefully still with delightfully funny tunes and jams.

Whatever it ends up being, we’re glad that Clement is up to something that we’ll be able to readily watch in the States and we hope it makes to HBO soon.

Despite what you may think, the movie sub genre surrounded by vampires isn’t quite finished yet. If anything, it’s only the romantic Twilight-esque notions of vampires that folks are growing tired of. Twists and redefinitions of the sub genre seem to be popping up and are pleasantly surprising.

Case in point: the New Zealand comedy What We Do In Shadows from Flight of the Conchords’ Jemaine Clement and Taika Waititi, which follows vampires living in a flat, mockumentary style. Just check the trailer and see how much fun it might just be.
