The Comedy Bureau Field Report Ep. 78: The Comedy Co-Op & Sociocracy

September 22, 2021
News, The Comedy Bureau Field Report
comedy co op, emmys, joan rivers, kathryn hahn, the comedy store

Just a bit over a few weeks ago, a mysterious entity only known as The Comedy Co-op was announced as a group that sought to make comedy better on nearly early level for performers, fans, and people working in comedy.

That was about all when knew back then, but they’ve slowly pulled back the curtain over the weeks explaining exactly who they are (including their ever burgeoning Steering Committee) and what they’re about (as well as what sociocracy is). This week’s TCB Field Report has Jake Kroeger get even a deeper explanation how they’re trying to break some of the more debilitating cycles in the art of comedy with The Comedy Co-op’s very own Blake Wilding, Yaki Margulies, and Nikki Osborne (and a special guest appearance/explanation from Jessica Zepeda).

Also, “hot” takes on the Emmys, The Comedy Store Records, Kathryn Hahn as Joan Rivers, and NYC venues vs. New York City.

Follow The Comedy Co-op @thecomedycoopla on IG, visit thecomedycoopla.com for more info, and get tickets for The First Show on 10/3 @ Junior High here. Follow Blake Wilding @blakewilding, Yaki Margulies @yakimargulies, Nikki Osborne @nikki0h, and Jessica Zepeda @creditcardmommy.

Over their extensive filmographies, both Paul Giamatti and Kathryn Hahn have played a plethora of complex characters while still managing to leave an indelible stamp on every role. Whether it be Sideways, Billions, Transparent, or I Love Dick, Giamatti and Hahn have a knack for playing people that are doing their best in spite of their circumstances.

Private Life, an upcoming film that pairs these two together, provides a big canvas for them to show off and it sure looks like they show off exquistely. Also, it’ll be the latest offering from writer/director Tamara Jenkins, who also wrote and directed one of our favorite dark comedy/dramas, The Savages.

Get a taste of what’s to come in this trailer, then look for Private Life to begin streaming on Netflix starting October 5th.

Equal parts coming-of-age story and thriller involving an alleged sex criminal, Flower not only seems like a timely movie for this year, but yet another welcome work that is co-written by Matt Spicer (co-writer/director of Ingrid Goes West) and a film that also appears to be a breakout role for Zoey Deutch.

See for yourself in the trailer.

Flower has a limited theatrical release scheduled for Mar. 16th.

The Hollywood Reporter always does a great job with these big roundtable discussions and this go around is no different.

They did probably more than an hour of discussion that was only slightly cut down between Kathryn Hahn, Issa Rae, Pamela Adlon, Emmy Rossum, Minnie Driver, and America Ferrera, for the comedy actresses, and William H. Macy, Kumail Nanjiani, Anthony Anderson, Ted Danson, Kevin Bacon, and Brian Tyree Henry, for the comedy actors.

It’s fascinating conversation that spans the current deconstruction of inherent expectations within female roles all the way to Kevin Bacon’s feeling on Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon.

Watch them here and here, respectively.

Showtime’s “Happyish” To Follow Middle Aged Ad Man That’s Not Don Draper

April 21, 2015
Uncategorized
happyish, kathryn hahn, showtime, steve coogan

The Hollywood Reporter chatted with the cast of Showtime’s upcoming Happyish which gave a little more insight into the show and how it might be, according to star Steve Coogan, an “…antidote to Mad Men…”

We got a brief glimpse of Happyish with the trailer posted over a month ago, but the specific plot details were a little fuzzy.

The cast made the story all the clearer in this THR interview as Coogan plays Thom Payne, middle-aged man working at an ad agency that apparently is going to confront many of the questions that Mad Men posed in the era, but answer them with more present day morality in mind. Kathryn Hahn who has been on a role over the last couple of years including arcs on Transparent and Parks and Recreation, is the wife of Thom that won’t be like Sally or Betty either as their marriage will be focal point for keeping things together on the show.

On top of all of that, they’ll be taking on real brands like Dora The Explorer, etc. and serving them up satirically.

Now that’s all cleared up, we’ll be looking forward to the premiere on Apr. 26th on Showtime at 9:30PM.

Kathryn Hahn Joins Adam Scott’€™s Next Greatest Event in Television History

After Jon Hamm dying, getting into fights with Amy Poehler, we can’t think of what Adam Scott will do with Kathryn Hahn in his next Greatest Event in Television History in two weeks at Adult Swim.

Maybe after this, he’ll do a movie version and do a shot for shot remake of the opening title sequence of Better Off Dead?
