TCB Debriefing 9/26/23: WGA Strike Ends, Rick & Morty S7, Dr. Strangelove Live, The Office, Relax, I’m From the Future Moonlighting, Brad Wenzel

News

*before we begin, WordPress is a dinosaur and, as such, we apologize for the massive amount of “dust” in trying to make some fixes to such an old hunk of junk.

1. WGA votes to ratify interim agreement and rescind strike order. This has the return of late night, including the Jimmys, Stephen, Seth, and John as well as SNL, set in motion for the next month or so. More importantly, that means Greg Gutfeld will no longer be #1 on late night anymore.

2. Here’s your official gander at Rick and Morty season 7 with the kickoff set for Oct. 15th. Not sure if Arm Rick will be as popular as Pickle Rick, but we didn’t think that Schezuan sauce debacle would actually get out of hand as much as it did (as well as hearing the new voices of Rick & Morty because of Justin Roiland…, well, you know by now).

3. Um, Steve Coogan will star in an Armando Iannucci/Sean Foley live stage adaptation of Dr. Strangelove that is set for an Oct-Dec. run in London’s Noel Coward Theatre (Deadline). Honestly, this is kind of worth the airfare, hotel, and ticket.

4. Apparently, there is a reboot of the U.S. version of The Office in the works (Collider). Something tells us if we let this reboot fly, we’re going to have another decade of reboots. Please go watch originals.

5. Speaking of originals, Rhys Darby continues to be a one-of-a-kind with the full length feature adaptation of the critically acclaimed time travel comedy short, Relax I’m from the Future. Take a gander here, then look for it in limited release right now.

6. One of Bruce Willis‘ crowning achievements in his very long, decorated career is one of his earliest, Moonlighting, co-starring a paragon of her time, Cybill Shepherd. You’ll be able to see why soon as the entire series will be on Hulu as of Oct. 10th (Indiewire).

7. One of the best one liner comedians/artisanal joke tellers out there today is Brad Wenzel. He’s currently on the road and you really ought to go see him live. After all, you have to be a very special Brad in comedy to have the URL bradcomedy.com (where you’d go get tickets to go see at these shows).

A post shared by Brad Wenzel (@bradwenzel)

8. We’ll leave you with this: Seriously, we’re working on a better TCB for all of you (and us too because updating everything has been a nightmare for a long time). Once more, please pardon our dust.

Steve Coogan Set to Tour UK & Ireland as Alan Partridge in 2022

Live, in-person shows are happening sporadically and with varying degrees of caution (Lollapalooza this Summer, for instance, seem a bit hasty) throughout the rest of 2021. However, looking towards 2022, you can expect a lot more out of, well, everything.

Just announced today, Steve Coogan will once more take up the mantle as his beloved character, Alan Partridge, and tour all around the UK and Ireland in April & May of 2022. As Partridge says in this announcement, he wants to lay out a “stratagem” on how the UK can heal from all the turmoil and havoc of the last year. Partridge, as a stubborn, self-important broadcaster, will, of course, have the answers.

Tickets for Stratagem with Alan Partridge go on sale this Saturday at 1AM PT in the morning at www.alanpartridgelive.com.

Steve Coogan To Receive This Year’s Charlie Chaplin Britannia Award for Excellence in Comedy

For everything Alan Partridge and The Trip movies alone, Steve Coogan has done the world of comedy a great service and provided so many fans with endless quotable moments for years to come.

Thus, he is deserved getting this lifetime achievement in comedy at the Britannia Awards from BAFTA. Whether you’re unfamiliar or not with Partridge or The Trip, it’s always a good time to dive into that part of Coogan’s filmography.

BBC Having Steve Coogan’s Alan Partridge Return, This Time as a Host of History Series

When the BBC seeks to send-up its own history documentaries, who better to tap than Coogan’s legendary character (perhaps one of the most renowned characters in UK comedy history) Alan Partridge?

We can’t wait to see Partridge attempt doing something educational and can only hope that it finds it way to the States sooner rather than later.

Shooting gets underway next month and we’ll keep you posted on premiere dates, especially the ones for us Yanks.

Alan Partridge to Return to BBC with ‘This Time With Alan Partridge’

Years from now, Steve Coogan’s two characters that will stand out from his career will be himself from those Trip movies and, of course, his DJ/host creation Alan Partridge.

Coogan has been playing Partridge for a quarter century now and BBC One is looking to extend that run even further with a six-part series where Alan co-hosts a weekday show This Time.

As he is back on TV rather than radio, you can completely expect things to go even more off the rails for Partridge than they normally do.

We can only hope that this series makes its way to the U.S. in a timely manner.

A New Alan Partridge Special and Series Will Be Coming to BBC

Steve Coogan’s iconic character Alan Partridge will be bringing a whole new TV special and a new series to the BBC later this year and in 2018 respectively.

With an Alan Partridge having done a movie and Coogan have had a different sort of success with Philomena, we weren’t quite sure what might happen to Partridge in the future.

Now, at this point in 2017, it looks like Coogan will be continuing as Partridge and himself in The Trip (Trip to Spain is great and you should go see it FYI) franchise for a little while longer.

Watch Trailer for Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon’s Latest “The Trip to Spain”

Though the idea of two funny people doing voices and riffing while heavenly food and visiting gorgeous locales might not sound like the foundation for a film franchise, that’s pretty much what Steve Coogan, Rob Brydon, and writer/director Michael Winterbottom have done with “The Trip” and it seems like that there are very few reasons why the franchise couldn’t just keep going.

They’ve gone to Greece and Italy, and now they’re going to Spain carrying all their antics with them.

See for yourself in the trailer for The Trip to Spain.

A U.S. release date has yet to be announced.

Seeso continues a healthy stream of UK comedy imports with the Alan Partridge’s Scissored Isle mockumentary. It follows Steve Coogan’s hilarious, long-running, bumbling radio DJ character Alan Partridge in his latest escapades, which are mostly his own fault.

Get a taste of the special here and here, then go watch (or sign-up, then watch) on Seeso.

Help Make Sure “The Adventures of Drunky” Gets Finished on Indiegogo

Earlier this year, we reported on an enticing R-rated animated feature in the works called The Adventures of Drunky that follows a bet for the fate of the planet between God and The Devil and a drunk.

From top billing to cameos, the cast is stellar including Sam Rockwell, Steve Coogan, Jeffrey Tambor, Dave Attell, Tyler The Creator, Abby Elliott, John Leguizamo, Jon Glaser, Jay Pharoah, Noel Wells, and James Adomian.

Sounds pretty great, right?

Well, Augenblick Studios has the script done and the dialogue recorded, but need funds to finish animating the whole thing. Thus, an Indiegogo campaign was born.

So far, they’ve raised $27,331 at the time of this post out of their minimum $100K goal. That will get them through the next step of production, but they’re looking to raise $2 million to finish the entire movie. They have just over three weeks to reach their goal and have fabulous rewards at various donations levels including lunch with Jeffrey Tambor, a personal insult voicemail from Dave Attell, digital copy of the movie and more.

Here’s God, as voiced by Jeffrey Tambor, and director Aaron Augenblick filling you in on all the details.

You can (and should) donate here.

Steve Coogan and Paul Rudd to Play Couple in Dramedy “An Ideal Home”

Even though it’s a dramedy, we’re still imagining Steve Coogan trading Michael Caine impressions with Paul Rudd.

Rudd and Coogan actually play a well-to-do couple that has to deal with a surprise grandson in a script from the writer and director of Hamlet 2, Andrew Fleming, who has also signed on to direct.

Coogan and Rudd on screen together ought to be a really good time as is. The two of them playing a couple should be

Coogan and Reilly does have a nice ring to it.

Jon S. Baird’s “Stan & Ollie” will follow the historic comic duo of Laurel and Hardy going on tour and Steve Coogan and John C. Reilly, comedic stars in their own right, have signed on to play the pair.

We really can’t wait to see what Steve and John will look like full in costume. Our guess is that’ll it be spot on.

Oh, we should mention that Sam Rockwell, Jeffrey Tambor, and Steve Coogan are the starring voice talents.

In addition to that, the movie will also feature the likes of Dave Attell, Tyler The Creator, Abby Elliott, John Leguizamo, Jon Glaser, Jay Pharoah, Noel Wells, and James Adomian amongst others and comes from the bonkers (in a good way) animation studio that brought you Wonder Showzen, Augenblick Studios.

All of those elements plugged into a story that has God, the Devil, and a drunk betting for the fate of the planet and all those living on it has us on board.

Showtime’s “Happyish” To Follow Middle Aged Ad Man That’s Not Don Draper

April 21, 2015

The Hollywood Reporter chatted with the cast of Showtime’s upcoming Happyish which gave a little more insight into the show and how it might be, according to star Steve Coogan, an “…antidote to Mad Men…”

We got a brief glimpse of Happyish with the trailer posted over a month ago, but the specific plot details were a little fuzzy.

The cast made the story all the clearer in this THR interview as Coogan plays Thom Payne, middle-aged man working at an ad agency that apparently is going to confront many of the questions that Mad Men posed in the era, but answer them with more present day morality in mind. Kathryn Hahn who has been on a role over the last couple of years including arcs on Transparent and Parks and Recreation, is the wife of Thom that won’t be like Sally or Betty either as their marriage will be focal point for keeping things together on the show.

On top of all of that, they’ll be taking on real brands like Dora The Explorer, etc. and serving them up satirically.

Now that’s all cleared up, we’ll be looking forward to the premiere on Apr. 26th on Showtime at 9:30PM.

Watch First Trailer for Showtime’s HAPPYish

This series has taken more than its fair share of bizarre turns as the original starring role was going to Philip Seymour Hoffman until he suddenly and tragically passed away.

Showtime opted to not give up on the show and brought the great Steve Coogan on board in place of Hoffman. You can see by this trailer that Coogan will be just fine in this role.

Now, HAPPYish is set to premiere Apr. 26th on Showtime at 9:30PM.

Also, it’s interesting to note that along with the upcoming Blunt Talk, Last Week Tonight, Episodes, there’s a pretty interesting trend of Brits rising in premium cable comedy series.

Showtime is really, quite literally picking up its comedy line-up. They already re-upped Inside Comedy with David Steinberg for a fourth season.

Now, they also have Tig Notaro’s traveling live comedy show docu-series and the dramedy that was set to star Philip Seymour Hoffman on deck for this year.

In April, Knock Knock, It’s Tig Notaro will premiere on the 17th (via TV Guide) and Happyish, which just got a series pick-up now starring Steve Coogan will premiere on the 26th (via Deadline).

So, it would appear that we should all be on the look out for Showtime in 2015.

Earlier this year, Showtime landed something big when they ordered the dark comedy series Happyish that was going to star Philip Seymour Hoffman.

As you probably know, Hoffman passed away tragically not long after Showtime picked up the series.

Steve Coogan has now been appointed in filling the role that Hoffman was set for and given just his recent work on Philomena and Alan Partridge, he’ll fill in quite nicely.

There’s a Sundance Film Festival in London Featuring Many of The Great Indie Comedies From U.S. Sundance

Since 2012, there has been a Sundance Film Festival in London that brings many of the films discovered in Park City, UT at the flagship Sundance Film Festival.

As there is a lack of exposure of our own indie films in general here in the States, there’s definitely a lack of exposure over in the U.K. That’s why, if you’re in London are going to be there in late April, maybe you can check out, catch, discover the likes of David Cross’ Hits, Frank with Michael Fassbender, They Came Together with Paul Rudd and Amy Poehler, Obvious Child with Jenny Slate, The Trip to Italy with Steve Coogan and Michael Winterbottom, and plenty of other indie comedies that made their U.S. festival debut earlier this year in Jan.

Not to mention that Veep’s own Armando Ianucci as well as Coogan are writers on the movie, you should get all excited for a potential 2014 release.

Here’s the trailer for Alan Partridge: Alpha Papa by the way if you haven’t seen it yet.
