The Comedy Bureau Field Report Ep. 38: Jill Paiz-Bourque & Big Business in Comedy Live-streaming

December 16, 2020
News, The Comedy Bureau Field Report
bbc, boots riley, chappelle's show, i'm a virgo, jill bourque, new comedy awards, rushtix

The proliferation of virtual comedy due to the COVID-19 pandemic would naturally bring about the creation/transition of entire platforms/venues/etc. in order to serve a gradual mass exodus of comedy, for the time being, into the live-streaming sphere. Jill Paiz-Bourque founded RushTix to serve that exact purpose and has done quite well with building and creating a premium comedy live-streaming platform that aims to be a destination for comedy fans and those in dire need of that connection that they would get at any sort of live show (but especially in live comedy). Jill zooms with TCB’s Jake Kroeger to detail RushTix rise to putting on comedy live-streams that boast thousands of attendees as well as get in “hot” takes on Chappelle’s Show being taken off HBO Max, BBC’s new New Comedy Awards, and Boots Riley getting the green light for his new series I’m a Virgo.

Follow @RushTix across socials & visit RushTix.com for schedule/tickets/info & follow Jill @jillbourque on Twitter.

BBC Comedy Association to Revive New Comedy Awards & Appoint a “Young People’s Comedy Laureate”

December 15, 2020
News
bbc, bbc comedy association, new comedy awards, young people's comedy laureate

Just over the weekend, the BBC’s BBC Comedy Association announced the plans for the next year and going forward with the rebooting their New Comedy Awards, a comedy competition dedicated to finding new talent. It has been off the air since 2006, but it will be brought back to UK audiences (and, hopefully, us Yanks via some streaming service?) as part of a fresh commitment by the BBC to “promote inclusion and representation”.

New comedy talent getting a legit chance on TV or just a set of awards dedicated to comedy is hard to come by these days, so we’re intrigued at what this new version of BBC’s New Comedy Awards will bring in the coming year.

Additionally, BBC Comedy Association Controller of Comedy Commissioning  Shane Allen announced that a Young People’s Comedy Laureate will be appointed next year to head up outreach for workshops, masterclasses, and the like all around the UK. From the looks of it, we’re guessing that’ll be a UK comedian of note, but we’re also excited to see who that might be. After all, Fleabag had its TV roots at the BBC.

Seeing what comes of this, maybe U.S. based networks/streaming services will have to do better than another season of Last Comic Standing or Bring the Funny.

Netflix Takes Down Select Chris Lilley Series Due to Use of Brownface

News

(via Deadline)

After the announcement of Little Britain being taken down on streaming services because of racist portrayals of POCs, streaming services going through their entire archives to clean house in regards to shows and content that hasn’t aged all that well, especially at a time where anti-racism is on everyone’s mind, shouldn’t come as a surprise.

The latest shows to come under this sort of scrutiny all come from Australia’s Chris Lilley. Specifically, Jonah From Tonga, Summer Heights High, We Can Be Heroes, and Angry Boys have all been taken off of Netflix for featuring characters, often Lilley himself (especially in Jonah From Tonga), in brownface or depictions of other races. Other series from Lilley that don’t feature Lilley in a bunch of brown make-up will remain on Netflix including Ja’mie Private School Girl.

Both Little Britain and all of these shows have been out now for years and their removal is a sign of what’s to come in changing the media landscape to be clearly anti-racist, especially after several days of BLM protests across the world. That being said, BBC is keeping a handful of these Lilley series, namely Summer Heights High and We Can Be Heroes on their streaming platform as well as a music video where Lilley invokes the use of the N-word.

Undoubtedly, there will be several weeks, if not months, of corrective behavior and apologies for all sorts of shows, movies, etc. and many of those will undoubtedly be in the realm of comedy that attempted to shock or provoke. The effect of such a gesture might be a tad bit performative in the long run, so we’re more curious to see what Hollywood, and the world at large for that matter, will do going forward (seriously producing and promoting more diverse BIPOC voices and the stories they want to tell, the way they want to tell them would be a pretty great start).

Phoebe Waller-Bridge dazzled the world with the first season of groundbreaking Fleabag and we’ve been jonesing for season 2 ever since the season finale.

It’s been a while, but Waller-Bridge was busy doing her other brilliant show, Killing Eve.

Finally, there’s a bit of a glimpse of season 2 and it looks to be the same absolutely riveting dark comedy that Waller-Bridge pulled off so well (maybe even more so).

There is no American premiere date yet, but we’ll definitely keep you posted.

Correction: Amazon premiere date for season 2 is on May 17th according to EW.

Fleabag Reupped for Season 2 by Both BBC and Amazon

What started out as a play by Phoebe Waller-Bridge is now getting a second season in both the UK and the US after a very well received first season as a TV series.

In case you didn’t know, Fleabag is indeed a fantastic dark comedy and one of Amazon’s best original series offerings.

A New Alan Partridge Special and Series Will Be Coming to BBC

Steve Coogan’s iconic character Alan Partridge will be bringing a whole new TV special and a new series to the BBC later this year and in 2018 respectively.

With an Alan Partridge having done a movie and Coogan have had a different sort of success with Philomena, we weren’t quite sure what might happen to Partridge in the future.

Now, at this point in 2017, it looks like Coogan will be continuing as Partridge and himself in The Trip (Trip to Spain is great and you should go see it FYI) franchise for a little while longer.

John Cleese to Co-Star in BBC Sitcom “Edith” from Charles McKeown, The Writer of “Brazil”

John Cleese to Co-Star in BBC Sitcom “Edith” from Charles McKeown, The Writer of “Brazil”

In this new Golden Age of television, John Cleese is indeed returning to the realm of sitcom with a new show from the writer of Brazil, Charles McKeown.

The premise, the engagement of an elderly couple is interrupted by an old son moving in with them, seems kind of straightforward and a bit classical in a sort of Odd Couple, Three’s Company sense.

That being said, with Monty Python alums Cleese and McKeown on board, we wouldn’t be surprised if there’s something special that they’ve got hidden up their sleeve for this series in tone, writing, etc.

You Can Now Binge Watch “Absolutely Fabulous” on BBC and ITV’s New Streaming Service BritBox

Seeing the writing on the wall, BBC and ITV have launched their very own streaming service that will serve as a way to get all the British TV you could ever want. They’re hitting that notion on the noggin by calling in BritBox.

Now, Seeso does already offer up a good deal of great British comedy from Alan Partridge to Blackadder to Garth Marenghi’s Darkplace and so much more. However, they didn’t get access to one of the most beloved comedies under the Union Jack, Absolutely Fabulous.

If you don’t have the DVDs, you’ll now be able to binge Ab Fab through BritBox as well as Fawlty Towers and Gavin & Stacey.

If you truly are an Anglophile, the $6.99 per month subscription fee might just be worth it to you.

BBC Orders Comedy ‘Motherland’ Co-Written by Sharon Horgan to Series

Sharon Horgan has quietly built a trans-atlantic comedy empire.

On top of having a couple of seasons of the much lauded Catastrophe under her belt with Rob Delaney and overseeing the new HBO series Divorce, Sharon Horgan has co-written a brand new show with Graham Linehan, Helen Linehan and Holly Walsh called Motherland that just a series order from the BBC.

It’ll be a more unfiltered take, probably a la Catastrophe, on motherhood and it probably won’t be too long before the show finds its way stateside.

Absolutely Fabulous, the renowned BBC sitcom from the early 90s and 2000s with Jennifer Saunders and Joanna Lumley, is apparently going to be made into a movie.

Saunders has just finished a script, which is very good to hear, and is looking to have go into production in 2015. If that happens, this will be at least one TV series movie adaptation we can look forward to.

Howard Read, the star and voice of BBC One’s Little Howard’s Big Question, manages to pull off doing improvised stand-up on Set List live as the animated character, Little Howard.

That’s right, using a controller, an extra TV, and his voice talent, Read does Set List as a cartoon and manages to keep the material from possibly R-rated topics relatively PG rated. Watch it here.

David Cross Cast as Dead Boss on Fox’s ‘Dead Boss’ Pilot

As David Cross has played Todd Margaret in The Increasingly Poor Decisions of Todd Margaret that was set in the UK, he’ll almost do the flip of that as he will play a horrible boss that’s mysteriously dead in the U.S. (based off a series in the UK of the same name).

Still, the prospect of seeing David Cross back on network TV is one were excited for.

Unlike trying to redo The 3 Stooges, BBC is making a bunch better move by just revisiting the lives of Laurel and Hardy.

We have a feeling that will go much better.

Casey Wilson & June Diane Raphael Comedy Series Closer to Happening at ABC

One of the higher profile projects during this past pilot season, Pulling, an adaptation of a BBC comedy series, is one step closer to happening at ABC with the wonderful Casey Wilson and June Diane Raphael after signing their latest deal at the network.

It’s not quite picked up to series just yet, but we’re hopeful given that it’s gone through this many hoops and still has Wilson and Raphael involved.

BBC Comedy Chief Doesn’t Like Criticism of New Shows Online/Doesn’t Get the Internet

Though we don’t really try to encourage the negativity that festers on the Internet, it does seem ridiculous that the head of comedy at BBC is basically asking the Internet to be nicer to brand new shows.

We say: Why don’t you have a little more faith in the projects you’re backing instead of keeping them on a short leash/canceling them based off of vicious comment threads?

robdelaney:

THURSDAY (St. Patrick’s Day) at the UCB: Come see me, Dave Holmes, Maria Bamford, Megan Amram & Sharon Horgan, co-writer & star of my FAVORITE comedy series, the BBC’s “Pulling.” I am SHITTING that Sharon Horgan is doing our show because she’s such a brilliant comet. Our show is always fun, but this one will be bananas. My oldest comedy pal Dave Holmes who taught me how to be funny, candidate for most amazing living writer Megan Amram, towering space genius Maria Bamford, and the dangerous legend to whom I look for spiritual comedic guidance, Sharon Horgan. I am straight up jizzing all over the place. I hope you will come see us and do the same. I’d be grateful to anyone who reposted this.
