Jim Hamilton-Tip of the Hat 4/9/11

The Comedy Bureau “Tips Its Hat” this week to JIM HAMILTON:

@Jim_Hamilton

“I should tell my neighbors that I’m a registered sex offender. I’m not, but at least the parents would tell their kids to avoid me.”

“No, I’m not stalking you. I made this marionette from memory.”

“Drop everything you’re doing and grab a broom. You just made a mess.”

As Twitter continues to rise in prominence in the comedy world, more and more comedians utilize the microblogging giant in developing material and few are so good as Jim Hamilton.

Though he may not have the following of more famous comedians who tweet only sporadically and often don’t tweet jokes or funny non sequiturs, Jim Hamilton applies his comedic prowess deftly in under 140 characters everyday.  Through this process he’s one of the few that have refined a comedic voice online appreciated by many as he was nominated by Punchline Magazine as one of the Best Tweeters of 2010.

Jim mixes dark observations on himself, extremely clever puns, and minutia throughout his feed along with jokes I’ve heard him tell live that echo of Mitch Hedberg, but are completely and uniquely Jim.  I’m sure Hedberg would never write a joke about having bartenders announce, in place of last call, “Jim Hamilton’s here.”

On stage, Jim takes these very precise one-liners and, unlike many one-liner comics that adopt an almost pretentious persona, is just himself.  His noticeable pauses in between jokes and fleeting glances to seemingly random portions of the room are genuine, only adding a rare nuance of vulnerability and, also, the hilarity.

Though having been on Comedy Central’s popular series Premium Blend, Jim has admitted that if it weren’t for Twitter, he might have quit comedy altogether.  Now, Jim has built up such a reputation that when I once told a comic about starting a tweeting competition between comics here in LA, they simply told me, without any hesitation, that Jim would win.

So, follow @Jim_Hamilton and then take the opportunity to catch him at French Toast @ Taix for free tomorrow Sun. Apr. 10th 8:30PM or at The 4 & 20 @ All Star Lanes Mon. Apr. 11th 8PM also for free.  You can also get some “extended” Jim Hamilton on Tumblr here.

robdelaney:

THURSDAY (St. Patrick’s Day) at the UCB: Come see me, Dave Holmes, Maria Bamford, Megan Amram & Sharon Horgan, co-writer & star of my FAVORITE comedy series, the BBC’s “Pulling.” I am SHITTING that Sharon Horgan is doing our show because she’s such a brilliant comet. Our show is always fun, but this one will be bananas. My oldest comedy pal Dave Holmes who taught me how to be funny, candidate for most amazing living writer Megan Amram, towering space genius Maria Bamford, and the dangerous legend to whom I look for spiritual comedic guidance, Sharon Horgan. I am straight up jizzing all over the place. I hope you will come see us and do the same. I’d be grateful to anyone who reposted this.

The Comedy Bureau “Tips Its Hat” this week to MEGAN AMRAM:

“@meganamram I’m giving up spell check for Lant.”

As far as escalating the art of being funny on the still new canvas of Twitter, there are few people that have mastered it quite like Megan Amram.

I’ve heard many people, especially avid Twitter users express hesitation at following comedians on Twitter as they only want to read gold instead of what’s about to be possibly tried out at an open mic.  With Amram, there is no such worry as she has refined her wit to where most everything she tweets “from the hip” usually gets a solid 3 minutes of me busting up in laughter while slapping my knees profusely.

Being featured quite often in “who to follow” lists of who’s the funniest on Twitter, Amram is of a rare breed that has actually found a comedic voice through the microblogging site, often times well under 140 characters, which is a feat that some of the most established and revered comedians have not even developed yet.  Perfectly absurd in her precise choice of words, references, and execution of the comedic twist within a joke, it’s no wonder that she has over 25,000 deserved followers without a network sitcom and a deranged personality to back her.

Megan also writes and contributes for other online publications in much longer form, which is equally as farcical and hysterical, as she’ll make a hilarious list of various topics including recently discovered unpublished Shakespeare plays, her own personal “bucket list” (included on that list: die), and stains.

Basically, you should follow anything she does online via Twitter, Tumblr, or anything else, which will most likely find its way somehow to the Comedy Bureau.  If you’re wondering what this elusive tweeter/blogger is like live, you can check her out on Dave Holmes and Rob Delaney’s UCB LA show “Mapping the Heavens” Thursday Mar. 17th 9:30PM $5.
