MTV’s Newly Launched MTV Studios Looking to Revive ‘Daria’ Amongst Other Properties

Not only is a Daria revival/reboot officially a priority for MTV, but they might be taking a stab at bringing back Beavis and Butt-Head as well. This probably means that MTV is going to put new, original sitcoms on the backburner for awhile.

We almost thought we hit peak 90s nostalgia, but, as it turns out, not quite yet.

That being said, maybe they’ll let Bo Burnham do something connected to a reimagining of Zach Stone Is Gonna Be Famous.

If you’ve seen Nicole Byer’s stand-up, you might think that it’s the sort of crazy life that is worthy of its own sitcom.

Well, that sitcom has been created and it’s called Loosely Exactly Nicole and you can see what we’re talking about with her roller coaster of a life in this first trailer.

Look for the series premiere of Loosely Exactly Nicole on Monday, September 5th at 10:30PM on MTV.

The prank show Ladylike is not only going to do hidden camera shenanigans, but do so in a way to balance out the sexes. Catcalling, being treated as crazy for being a woman, etc. are going to get flipped by Nicole Byer and a whole great team of comedians including Megan Gailey, Jade Catta-Preta, Blair Socci, and more.

You saw a bit of that in the first trailer, but there’s more in this latest teaser.

Ladylike premieres Thursday, June 9th at 10:30PM on MTV.

The MTV Movie Awards Show where Hollywood not only lets its hair down, but dyes it in some radical color and put it in spikes. Still, that doesn’t stop certain winners like Comedic Genius Award Recipient Melissa McCarthy giving a heartfelt speech and name checking the women in comedy whose shoulders she stands upon including Carol Burnett, Julia Louis Dreyfus, and even her own mother.

All in all, it was a well-executed speech amidst the controlled chaos of the telecast that also happen to include Melissa McCarthy crowd surfing.

Comedians seeing if they can hack it at various day jobs is almost always is a good starting point for a show.

MTV has just ordered an unscripted comedy pilot, Backup Plan, where stand-up comedian Leonard Ouzts will be trying different jobs with the idea that his 15 minutes of fame might be up soon and he’ll have to get a day job outside of comedy again.

Hopefully, this will fill that void left by Comedy Central not going forward with the show that had Hannibal Buress doing various hard jobs.

It doesn’t even have a title yet and MTV still has ordered it to series.

What is now known as ‘Untitled Nicole Byer Project’ is one of MTV’s latest new scripted comedy series. It’ll follow Nicole Byer living in the suburbs with her sister and her four children after burning down her own apartment in NYC.

No matter what it ends up being called, we’re really glad to see Byer has her own series.

MTV is getting further into the Nicole Byer business.

MTV just announced the newest additions to their development slate, two of which include the very funny Nicole Byer.

One is an untitled sitcom project that will star Byer and follow her having to live in the suburbs after burning down her apartment.

The other is a hidden camera show called Ladylike featuring Jade Catta-Preta, Nicole Byer, Matteo Lane, and Blair Socci running pranks that are meant to challenge social norms.

We’re curious to see how all this pans out as there could be promise in either of these projects.

Paul Scheer’s recreation of some of the craziest episodes of MTV’s Total Request Live continues on Scheer-RL with awkward conversations between host Carson Daly and guests who had, at the time, never been on TRL before like Celine Dion and Eminem paired with Mark Wahlberg. There was also a time where P. Diddy ran on a treadmill during an interview in preparation for running a marathon.

On top of that, Casey Wilson plays Celine Dion, Terry Crews and Katie Lowes play P. Diddy and Britney Spears, and Randall Park and Joe Lo Truglio play Eminem and Mark Wahlberg, which turns out to be as ridiculous and great as you think it would be.

MTV Trying a Late Night Talk Show Again with “Middle of the Night Show”

College Humor’s Big Breakfast is developing MTV’s latest late night talk show that will trade a sound stage and audience for a bedroom.

The Middle of the Night Show makes its twist on the late night talk show format by getting rid of desk, couches, sound stage, audience, etc. and, instead, goes to the bedroom of guests while they are sleeping and waking them up to have them host a show from their home.

It seems like some sort of cross between this Rihanna prank on Jimmy Kimmel and The Late Late Show episode where Corden did an entire episode in someone’s house and Matt Oswalt’s Pre Dawn Show.

College Humor’s Brian Murphy will co-host as they’re trying to catch celebrities in the middle of their REM cycles and need someone to guide the show along.

Supposedly, the celebrity host that will be woken up to do the show will have no prior warning as to exactly when the crew will come in. If that’s true, we’d imagine that there would be a few episodes where the crew and Brian will set off an alarm.

Jill Soloway who has deservedly received bushels of accolade for her Amazon series Transparent is now developing a new series that follows two women that reconnect after getting struck by lightning and their fervor for feminism.

The more intriguing thing to note about this project is that it’s going to MTV and not Amazon.

Hopefully, Soloway along with writers Lyle Friedman and Ashley Skidmore can bring the edgy, but smart comedy that MTV has tried for over the last few years (i.e Zach Stone Is Gonna Be Famous)

Matt Porter and Charlie Hankin have done many things that we’ve enjoyed here at The Comedy Bureau over the years. They both comprise the amazing Good Cop Great Cop and have made the grounded post-apocalyptic CC:Studios series New Timers.

Now, Matt and Charlie have cooked something new for MTV Other called Door Boys. Technically, they play door men, but, given how their disposition towards the gig, they more accurately are door boys.

Paul Scheer already did a bang up job reenacting The Arsenio Hall Show with the ArScheerio Paul Show, so it would make complete sense that he would do reenact another 90s show where things were live and could go awry.

From this tweet/picture above, it looks like that MTV’s TRL, or Total Request Live, is going to get the same treatment as SRL from Scheer, JASH, and director Payman Benz.

Hopefully, if this is all of what they’re up to, they will hopefully reenact that one time Mariah Carey crashed the studio live on air, unannounced with a popsicle cart.

After getting rid of Nikki & Sara Live and Zach Stone Is Gonna Be Famous, MTV is still trying to figure their angle for comedy. Their latest pilot is centered on Ken Jeong playing himself as a role model in a coming-of-age comedy.

It’s called, and perhaps you guessed it, Ken Jeong Made Me Do It. We’re curious to see if this will touch on Jeong once being a full fledged medical doctor.

Hopefully, Conan gets in on the Best Kiss action.

MTV Didn’t Pick Up ‘Nikki & Sara Live’ For a 3rd Season

First Totally Biased is off the air and now Nikki & Sara Live won’t get a 3rd season. The announcement comes from Nikki Glaser and Sara Schaefer on their great podcast You Had To Be There, which was part of the reason they got a show in the first place, with their staff at Sara’s apartment.

We know that there are probably solid financial aspects, demographic and branding research behind why MTV isn’t keeping Nikki & Sara Live on the air, but we’re really shocked about this and probably whatever MTV is going to have as a replacement.

The Truth Behind Daft Punk’s Cancelled Appearance on The Colbert Report

It wasn’t a ruse that Stephen Colbert had cleverly planned and kept on the down low when Daft Punk cancelled last minute on appearing on The Colbert Report.

If anything, you’ll somehow have an even deeper appreciation what Colbert and his writing staff attempted to go through to get the duo, helmets and costumes all, on screen with their bizarre diva like requests.

Watch Entire First Episode of MTV’s Hey Girl Now

MTV’s latest comedy show, Hey Girl, is promoted as a talking head/sketch hybrid series aimed at girls, but in watching the first episode, we have to say there’s plenty of fun to be had for both genders. We’re crediting the very smartly put together cast, staff, and crew of the show for making that possible.

Go see for yourself how funny Shelby Fero taking flirting advice or Laura Willcox challenging her boyfriend vs. her BFF on knowledge of her ex-boyfriend can be at the link.
