TCB Debriefing 11/14 & 11/15/23: David Drake, Chicken Run, John Oliver/Pūteketeke, Jon Stewart, Coyote vs. Acme, Jimmy Kimmel/Oscars, Kevin Hart

November 15, 2023
News
aardman, annapurna, chicken run, coyote vs acme, david drake, jimmy kimmel, john oliver, jon stewart, kevin hart, mark twain prize, netflix, oscars

1. Though self-deprecation is one of the most common modes of stand-up comedy, very few comedians are actually good enough to pull it off as an entire facet of their onstage persona. This is where NYC staple David Drake thrives. Drake’s debut hour, That’s It, special showcases the precarious balance that he achieves of savagely making fun of how crestfallen his life is, but being cool, calm, and collected about it all the same time. Drake’s career as an under-the-table mover or an existential love crisis involving some M or AO rated video game is shared with enough candor, but enough comedic/emotional distance to illicit big laughs/applause for the whole hour. Essentially, the simple, but very hard trick of making fun of yourself as a comedian is getting the audience, on an unconscious level, to know that you’re actually OK (but not so OK that it sounds like you’re flat out lying). A la the name of the special, ‘that’s it’ and Drake does that pretty flawlessly. Enjoy That’s It now for free at your convenience on YouTube here.

2. The charm of Aardman remains undeniable as the sequel to Chicken Run, Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget, unveils its first official trailer. Their charm as a studio is so strong with stop animation and delightful British sensibilities that we’d wager this will probably fare better than the MCU’s The Marvels and Pixar’s Elemental when all is said and done.

3. John Oliver succeeded in running away with New Zealand’s Bird of the Century contest as the Pūteketeke won with a resounding landslide to the tune of 300K votes (2nd place didn’t cross the threshold of 20K votes) (NPR) after doing a segment on Last Week Tonight, buying billboards all across the planet, and appearing on Fallon to promote. This is proof positive that American/British meddling in the rest of the world is alive and well.

4. Apple might not get away with citing “creative differences” in cancelling The Problem with Jon Stewart this year (Reuters). Stewart’s commentary on China and Apple’s business ties in China might amount to some very (deserved) hot water in Congress for the tech giant.

5. After being shelved as a tax write-off and drawing the ire of a strike-weary Tinseltown and Internet, Warner Discovery has changed course on the live action/animation hybrid Coyote vs. Acme being shopped around for another distributor, which should mean that the general public will get to see it somewhere in the not so distant future (Deadline). To add insult to injury to AMPTP poster boy, David Zaslav, preview screenings from Hollywood/comedy luminaries Phil Lord and Chris Miller only garnered praise making the attempted write-off seem even more brazen and ridiculous.

6. Jimmy Kimmel will return to host The Oscars in 2024 marking his 4th time hosting the legendary awards ceremony (Variety). That still leaves plenty of room to catch up to Billy Crystal and Bob Hope, but we honestly wouldn’t be surprised if Jimmy surpasses both of them (after all, his studio is only across the street from where the awards have happened for so long).

7. Kevin Hart will be the latest recipient for the Mark Twain Prize for Humor, one of comedy’s most prestigious awards, specifically awarded to a comedian that can be credited with changing public discourse with their comedy. Any takers on how many presenters will bring up The Oscars in their speeches “honoring” Hart?

8. We’ll leave you with this: We’d like to wholeheartedly remind you that comedy is, truly and very deeply, subjective.

TCB Debriefing 10/19/23: The Problem with Jon Stewart, Jon Stewart, Dilli Dark, Chris Rock/Kevin Hart, The Egyptian, Tix Winners, Beth Stelling

1. We’re losing Jon Stewart yet again. The Problem with Jon Stewart has just been cancelled before going into its third season with the industry’s most passive aggressive excuse of “creative differences” being cited (NY Times). More specifically, disagreements over covering topics such as AI and China lead to said differences and that should be a good indicator as to where Apple, a company so rich that it’s effectively its own sovereign nation.

2. Take a gander at the very clever Dina Hashem and her latest special, Dark Little Whispers, which will be the latest stand-up comedy offering from Amazon. Due out Fri Nov. 10th.

3. The Dibakar Das Roy and the title Dilli Dark might not mean much to you now, but that will all change when you see what the black immigrant experience is like in a dramedy set in India (spoiler alert: not to dissimilar to the one in the US). Hopefully, this will find its way to U.S. theaters soon.

4. Leslie Liao is, in our minds, an undeniable rising star and now is the time to go catch her ascent and brag to everyone that you knew her before whatever star turn is going to come her way. Good thing she’s on a global tour. Get tix at leslieliao.com.

5. Chris Rock and Kevin Hart are two of the biggest names in all of comedy and are synonymous with the art form with two different generations (including plenty of overlap). So, why not play MSG for four shows? That’s exactly what happened and Headliners Only is the behind the scenes documentary that captured what that entire week was like. Take a gander at it here, then look for it on Netflix on Tues. Dec. 12th.

6. The Egyptian had a small run when Netflix initially took over the celebrated revival/arthouse movie palace smack dab in the heart of Hollywood a couple of years ago, but it has laid dormant for quite some. Come Nov. 9th, it will officially reopen, which counts as one more theater that Los Angeles didn’t lose during the pandemic (Indiewire). Fingers crossed for a 2024 Arclight Hollywood reopening.

7. Congrats to Darren Roth and Kenneth Rudnicki for winning our ticket giveaways for Ramy Youssef and Daniel Sloss this weekend. FYI, you just have to pay attention to the debriefing here for future giveaways.

8. We’ll leave you with this: If any network/streaming service is aiming to shake up late night/take a chance on a talk show, please go with Beth Stelling (if that something she wants to do). It’s criminal that she isn’t on TV most nights of the week.

A&E Set to Debut Two Part Black Comedy History Doc “Right to Offend: The Black Comedy Revolution”

Undeniably, there is a wave of documentaries examining the history of comedy from every possible angle and at every degree. From covering individuals such as Dick Gregory, George Carlin, and even Bill Cosby to focusing on such changing attitudes in the form through the lens of 9/11 with Too Soon: Comedy After 9/11, there is an ever growing fascination of the inner workings of inciting laughter.

A&E is putting their hat in the ring here with Kevin Hart’s Hartbeat & Time Studios’ Right to Offend: The Black Comedy Revolution, a two-part doc series that will trace the lineage of black comedians that defied racial barriers and sought to skewer the absurd inequalities that were just taken for granted, especially the ones based off the amount of melanin you had in your skin.

The likes of Tiffany Haddish, W. Kamau Bell, Michael Che, Steve Harvey, Sherri Shepherd, Wayne Brady, Aisha Tyler, DL Hughley, Amber Ruffin, and Katt Williams amongst other comics and historians will weigh in on the oft-overlooked milestones of black comedy (just compare Mike Binder’s The Comedy Store to Phat Tuesdays: The Hip Hop Era of Comedy).

Take a gander at what’s to come with this teaser for Right to Offend here, then look for its premiere on A&E on Jun. 29th & 30th at 9PM (then presumably streaming on aetv.com afterwards).

Kevin Hart’s Laugh out Loud and The Sundance Institute Pick Their First Three for Women Write Now Fellowship

More and more these days, there are an increasing number of initiatives and fellowships to put marginalized groups in those lead creative positions that would truly shift the tide in terms of real representation and inclusivity when it comes to TV/movies/content.

The newly forged collaboration between Laugh Out Loud and the Sundance Institute has made for the Women Write Now fellowship for prospective black female creators that will have selected fellows and their respective scripts developed and produced for an actual streaming deal on Peacock (as well as a development deal for one of the fellows). That’s better than a lot of these fellowships as the general pubic usually has no access to what fellows are making.

For this first go around of the Women Write Now fellowship, Wilandrea Blair, Danielle Nicolet, and Moni Oyedepo have been selected and will be lead by the creative forces of Yamara Taylor as well as Leigh Davenport, Val Boreland, Zainab Johnson, and more in addition to Gabrielle Dennis, Meagan Good, and Bresha Webb as directors.

Be sure to look out for Blair, Nicolet and Oyedepo’s projects on Peacock soon.

Kevin Hart Don’t F**k This Up Docu-Series Truly Does Give an Insider’s Look Into the Life of a Superstar Comedian

Kevin Hart’s Netflix docu series intends to show Kevin confronting his past and present and future via tons of footage from all years of his life (and plenty of the present day non-stop, go-go-go, lifestyle he keeps up now).

Seeing Kevin get vulnerable and diving into his past is pretty intriguing, especially in how his mother and father have informed his life these days. Also,  the sheer scale at which Kevin Hart runs his entertainment empire is pretty damn captivating. Balancing, stand-up, running his own comedy brand Laugh Out Loud, starring in movies, hardcore workouts, his family, recording podcasts/doing radio, and so much more, we’ve perhaps never got inside look of the life of one of the biggest draws around that happens to be a comedian.

Kevin Hart: Don’t F**k This Up is now streaming on Netflix.

Kevin Hart: Don’t F**k This Up Trailer Dives Deep Into the Life of a Superstar Comedian

A documentary series following the life of a superstar comedian as it has happened in the very recent past and continuing on forward (as opposed to decades after their legacy has been sealed) might be without precedent.

That’s what’s so intriguing about Kevin Hart: Don’t F**k This Up that follows Hart’s life at the top of comedy and being one of the most successful entertainers working today. The trailer shows that it doesn’t shy away from Hart’s controversies with his infidelity and the Oscars hosting debacle.

In fact, it seems they are the focal points of the doc coupled with his recounting his rise to the top. There are docs like this for big time musicians to be sure, but it’ll be fascinating to see the comedian version of peeking into the life of being at the top.

This docu-series Kevin Hart: Don’t F**k This Up begins streaming on Netflix on Fri. Dec. 27th.

Watch Conan O’Brien Annoy The F Out of Kevin Hart During a Workout

For Conan’s latest remote segment, he joins Kevin Hart for a workout session. In addition to being a very successful comedian and actor, Hart is known for his athletic regimen and fitness while Conan O’Brien is a legendary for being able to take a situation devoid of comedy and make it so damn funny.

So, what ensues is a great attempt at trying to workout that gets skillfully derailed by Conan O’Brien really getting underneath Hart’s skin. In fact, there are several moments where it almost looks like Hart isn’t doing a bit anymore and is genuinely frustrated. It’s kind of wonderful to watch.

Watch and enjoy the workout/bickering session here.

Amy Schumer Is First Woman to Make Forbes’ Top 10 Highest Earning Comedians List, Kevin Hart Scores Top Spot

Score two for diversity.

Kevin Hart was far and away the top earning comedian by pulling in $87.5 million and Schumer cracks into what is pretty much exclusively a boys club (no mention of Joan Rivers through the years seems odd) with $17 million.

Also, it’s nice to see Dave Chappelle and Jim Gaffigan on the list as that would suggest that this top 10 list isn’t getting more balanced with comedians that are oft-appreciated for their craft.

Directors Lloyd Stanton and Paul Toogood extensively interviewed all of the above and made what might be another documentary that showcases stand-up as being more than just a bunch of clowns rattling off jokes every night.

Though they’re co-starring for the very first time together in the upcoming movie Get Hard, Will Ferrell and Kevin Hart have a long intertwined, secret history… supposedly.

According to these archived audition tapes exclusive to Funny or Die, Ferrell and Hart tried out for roles that ended up not only going to the other person, but became roles that are now synonymous with Ferrell or Hart.

Though you’re probably not questioning too much why Hart didn’t get Anchorman or Ferrell didn’t get a role in Barbershop, you can see the evidence right here.

Richard Linklater Looking to Add Jon Hamm, Danny McBride, Key & Peele, and More to Incredible Mr. Limpet

Taking from 1964’s The Incredible Mr. Limpet that had Don Knotts turn into a fish and help hunt Nazi U-boats, director Richard Linklater is going for a remake and lining up a pretty great cast. Zach Galifianakis is attached to play Mr. Limpet, the role Knotts played, and there are no Nazis in this one.

However, Jon Hamm, Sarah Silverman, Danny McBride, Kevin Hart, Josh Gad, Jordan Peele, and Keegan-Michael Key are all in talks to join the cast. With Linklater at the helm and this cast, this might be one of the more fascinating, possibly great remakes in a long time.

This is only 3 months in to 2014, so who knows how much higher she’ll go.

How to Build the Ultimate Black Comedian: A Response

October 5, 2011
Uncategorized

by Jeremy Paul

I read Patrice Evans’ article, How to Build the Ultimate Black Comedian posted on Splitsider yesterday, hoping that the column was, in fact, tongue in cheek, biting satire. I read the paragraphs hoping that, what I was reading was, in fact, dripping with sarcasm and that I was just missing it. Seriously, I hope that I am missing out. Please, let the article be a missive, a gotcha, a joke. Just, please, let me be too dense to recognize a superior wit. Yet, I know that my instincts are correct, and I have just read an article which seriously detailed how to create even more horrible black comics who do the same idiocy that I, a comedian with brown skin and black hair, have avoided doing for the better part of my career. So, here is my response to the article I just read, and perhaps, a better way of building an Ultimate Black Comedian.

If you want to piece together black comedians of the past in order to create the perfect  or “Ultimate Black Comic” of the future, how about this, don’t. Stop this exercise and give it real thought. Those comics mentioned shed their influences to be the great comics that they are and were. Patrice named 4 of the most famous “black comics” that the world has ever known and took portions of their performance style in order to concoct a comedian worthy of being called the “Ultimate Black Comic”. To begin, to catagorize Mr. Pryor as a black comic is doing a disservice to his legacy and his comedy. He was as far beyond being a black comic as, well, there is no simile nor metaphor to aptly describe how far beyond the label he was. The other 3 comics that were mentioned, yes, they can be described as black comics. But they are the elite. Patrice, by cobbling together the originality of Pryor, with the style of Murphy, social consciousness of Rock and the absurdity of Chappelle created a hypothetical comic that was, at heart, a comic who spoke about his darkest fears and mistakes, while using a character in a slick way, relating it to politics which resolves itself with the comic yelling “dooky!” to close the joke. Seriously, that comic can be found failing at any open mic that black people trying comedy for the first time go to in order to perform.

Anyone that has seen me perform can attest to the fact that I am anything but a “Black Comic”. Sure, I am a “black man”, but I am not a black comic because the label applies to a segment/group of entertainers that all do the same types of jokes. A black comic is a jew comic is a gay comic is a frat boy comic is an alt comic. It is all the same shit. It is the same material that has been done repeatedly, to the point where I can’t even watch black comics perform anymore because I get angry at the lack of differentiation.

Don’t believe me? Here is a black comedian’s material stripped down to a single sentence: “This is what it’s like for me to be black."

Too many of them don’t even try anymore to be themselves, they are trying to be "the next big thing” and they don’t care how many times a joke has been explored and exploited, if it makes the people react, they’ll do it, their own personal beliefs be damned. And before anyone says “Everything has been done before” do me a favor, if you are a comic or aspiring comedian whom seriously believe that everything has been done before, quit. Never touch the mic again. Go apply at a gas station and leave the stage for those of us that know that humanity hasn’t so much as scratched the surface on what can be done.

You want to build the Ultimate Black comic by using the talents of the greats? Okay, how about Pryor’s life experiences and fearlessness, Cosby’s storytelling ability, Rock’s social critiques and cap that off with Whoopi’s ability to change perspectives? That won’t do it for you? Try this less name based formula. Murky personal history, college graduate, relentlessly honest. Excels at telling one liners, stories or traditional short jokes. Can create memorable characters. Loves performing. That’s a recipe. The ultimate black comic, should be able to further the artform, not just appease the 3rd largest ethnic demographic in the United States.

Now, that was just what I saw wrong with the first 6 paragraphs. The tips were what infuriated me about the article and made me hope beyond hope, that Patrice was blowing smoke into my nose. The tips, for being the next great black comic were, in order: grow a mustache, curse in a high voice, be extremely expressive yet be really cool. Some of the types of jokes to do were, “Black people vs. Niggas” (aka Chris Rock’s joke). White people do this, black people do that (made popular by nearly every black comic from 1950 to the present) and “Racism”, which is a staple in nearly every non-caucasian comic in North America. To be certain, those were some of the worst tips to being a great comic you could possibly get. If that is your material and your performance style, quit.

What irked me most was the bottom paragraphs of the article, The Five White Comics That Need Black Versions. We don’t need black versions of white comics. We also don’t need white versions of black comics. The black versions of these comics already exist, and if you don’t know who they are, you haven’t been watching that much comedy lately. How about we get a new crop of black male and female comics that don’t feel the need to scream into the microphone and instead talk at a normal volume because they know that a microphone amplifies sound so that you don’t have to scream every word. I love to watch a black male comic that doesn’t have a bit that is essentially a reason to assume every gay male wants to have sex with him. I love when I meet a black comic that doesn’t have their failed rapper name as the name they use when they go on stage. I’m ecstatic when I watch a comic say something that I haven’t heard a thousand times. You want to build the Ultimate Black Comic? Why not just get comics to understand that they don’t have to try and be like the comics that succeeded before them. That’s how you become the next great one, by being the next great one. Be  great at what you do and people will recognize it, black comic or not…
