TCB Debriefing 7/21-8/10: Roy Wood Jr. on CNN, Inside Out TV Series, Saturday Night Trailer+++

August 10, 2024
News
adam sandler, brian jordan alvarez, carmen christopher, chloe radcliffe, cnn, danny mcbride, english teacher, fx, high plains comedy festival, How to Die Alone, hulu, inside out, james adomian, jason reitman, john early, jordan peele, mitch hedberg, Molly Kearney, natasha rothwell, netflix, punch up, punkie johnson, ramy youssef, roy wood jr, sam morril, saturday night, scare tactics, snowflakes, solar opposites, southern book club's guide to slaying vampires, stephanie hsu, the incredibles, toy story, veeps

1. Roy Wood Jr. will be hosting his own topical panel show on, not Comedy Central, but CNN with Have I Got News For You. While The Daily Show did get Jon Stewart back, there is an unmistakable feeling that they missed out here.

2. Disney’s own version of Comic Con, D23, is this weekend and the big takeaway is that Mickey and company will be sticking with their big hits from Pixar in the form of an Inside Out series, another sequel to The Incredibles, and another sequel to Toy Story (which begs the question how much more existential crises can they explore through the nature of sentient toys).

3. Let’s call that a take 2 on Studio 60, but this time, from Jason Reitman that actually tackles the origin story of SNL head on (and it looks pretty damn great). Take a gander at the trailer for Saturday Night here, then look for it in theaters come Oct. 11th.

4. Adam Sandler took a big leap into the Safdie Brothers’ world when diving into Uncut Gems, and Josh Safdie is returning the favor by directing Sandler’s latest stand-up special, Love You (take a look at the trailer here). Let’s see if this leads to a Safdie Brothers slapstick comedy. Love You will hit Netflix later this month on Aug. 27th.

5. The High Plains Comedy Festival in Denver, CO is still one of the very best comedy festivals around (and is coming up soon on Sept. 19th-21st). Peep their first line-up announcement! THEN, go get your fest passes here.

6. Given how truly insane the winds of change feels these days, a wave of absurdism/non-sequitur/unapologetic deconstructionist satire in a comedy special (as opposed to more litanies of crowd-work-fueled comedy specials) feels more than needed. Fortunately, Carmen Christopher has come through with his latest and very hilarious special Live from the Windy City that serves up many shots of all those ingredients in addition to thankfully showcasing Christopher’s stand up chops in a non-COVID-socially-distanced setting. If you’re any level of fan of I Think You Should Leave, you might recognized Carmen from a sketch or two and, as such, you’re really going to dig Live from the Windy City (after all, Tim Robinson does have his name attached to this special). Live from the Windy City is now streaming on VEEPS and you can (and should) stream it here.

7. While Abbott Elementary has the hearts and minds of America’s primetime viewing audience, FX is giving the high school work place comedy its own treatment with English Teacher from Brian Jordan Alvarez (that seems to have the same very satisfying bite that Election had over 20 years ago). Also, Sean Patton as Markie might be TV’s latest scene stealer. See for yourself with the trailer here, then look for the premiere on FX/Hulu on Sept. 2nd.

8. James Adomian, who voices many of your favorite adult animated series, is one of comedy’s best minds and voices and has been for years now. Thankfully, his very first hour special is due out on 800 Pound Gorilla on Aug. 16th and then, for everyone, on Sept. 19th. Please enjoy his retro comedy special trailer for Path of Most Resistance here.

9. After having some of the very best moments in season 1 of White Lotus, Natasha Rothwell is taking center stage with her very own series How to Die Alone, a comedy following a carpe-diem-turn for a woman who is afraid to fly, but works an airport. See what Natasha has up her sleeve with the trailer for How To Die Alone here, then look for it exclusively on Hulu come Sept. 13th.

10. Both Punkie Johnson and Molly Kearney are leaving SNL, which means the new cast announcement for the next season might be big (and plenty diverse).

11. Ramy Youssef has signed a first look deal with Netflix, which is yet another step for the rising comedy star. Note that this doesn’t mean he has the answer to achieving peace in the Middle East (only great jokes about it).

12. Quinta Brunson and Stephanie Hsu are teaming up on a comedy feature for Universal. No plot details are available at this time, which leaves us to assume that it’s about a multiverse of public schools that also don’t have enough funding.

13. It’s about time there was a Mitch Hedberg documentary especially considering that he set an intention of telling jokes without references so he could be timeless. Keep an eye out for this doc from 222-2222 Films.

13. While Chloe Radcliffe is in Edinburgh right now racking up well deserved acclaimed for her marvelous solo show, CHEAT, let’s not forget that Chloe is really damn good at stand-up. See her Don’t Tell set here for proof.

14. Not only is the fifth season of Solar Opposites around the corner (Aug. 12th on Hulu) and it just got renewed for another season, but it seems as any lingering controversy with Justin Roiland’s exit is well in the rear view mirror. All looks like a well oiled machine in this trailer for the new season.

15. In addition to Sam Morril making his Amazon debut with his brand spankin’ new special You’ve Changed, there’s, essentially, a bonus track of crowd work/material available exclusively on newly forged comedian streaming platform PunchUp called “Buying Drinks”. If you loved Sam’s rooftop stuff, you’ll love this.

16. In addition to doing a sharply honed high school comedy, it would seem FX is angling on a Gen-Z version of Friends with their new series, Snowflakes. Shout out to comedian Malik Elassal has is kind of having a banner year in 2024.

17. We don’t know how many seasons What We Do In the Shadows will ultimately go, but thank goodness Danny McBride is getting to work on adapting his own vampire comedy from Grady Hendrix’s book The Southern Book Club’s Guide to Slaying Vampires.

18. While a return to pure comedy might seem unlikely for acclaimed horror director Jordan Peele, him taking on prank series Scare Tactics is a welcome dip back into comedy. Look for Peele to possibly revolutionize prank shows later this Fall on USA Network.

19. We’ll leave you with this: Free tickets to John Early @ The Bellwether on 9/17 anyone? Yes? Hit us up at thecomedybureau@gmail.com and we’ll see if we can hook you up.

Get Your First Look at Season 3 of The Righteous Gemstones

The Gemstones, your favorite corrupt televangelist family is back, from just over a month now. After the series premiered right before the pandemic, then taking almost three years off, we have a new season right around the corner on Sun. Jun. 18th.

As with anything where McBride is at the helm, you got to know that the stakes are going to be raised and raised really quick. From the looks of the first official trailer for season 3 of The Righteous Gemstones, Jesse Gemstone is about to get himself in a whole heap of trouble by racing a stock car (probably with almost no experience whatsoever) just to settle a dispute and there is a Steve Zahn-led-assault-rifle-toting Christian militia afoot.

Also, it’s intriguing to note that season 3 will be premiering on Max (formerly known as HBO Max), which we’re “sure” won’t lead to any more brand confusion between what counts as HBO or not.

Take a gander at what the Gemstones are getting into this time right here.

Righteous Gemstones Season 2 Gives a Better Look at How Ludicrous Season 2 Will Be

News
adam devine, danny mcbride, edi patterson, eric andre, hbo, john goodman, righteous gemstones

We’ve already gotten a taste of season 2 of The Righteous Gemstones with this delicious teaser, but, as of today, we get a full taste of what’s to come with the Gemstones’ conniving televangelist ways. Boy howdy, the Gemstones are not wasting any time at all in descending into more, very unchristian chaos (especially with the inclusion of Eric Andre as another Christianity profiteer).

Danny McBride, John Goodman, Edi Patterson, and Adam Devine seem to be in even more peak form for being a corrupt family from the looks of this trailer. Can’t wait to see how the pro wrestling match figures in this season’s arc.

Look for season 2 of The Righteous Gemstones on Jan. 9th on HBO/HBO Max.

After Two Years, We Got a New Season of The Righteous Gemstones on the Way (Trailer)

Fall 2019 was not necessarily an innocent time, but definitely more innocent that where we have been and where we are now. That just happen to be the time when Danny McBride’s latest series The Righteous Gemstones dropped on HBO and it’s satirizing of televangelist empires was undeniable. A season 2 was pretty much unquestioned, but then COVID-19 did, you know, what it’s still doing.

In fact, that time was so long ago that we almost forgot that there was even going to be a second season the searing dramedy that is Danny’s biggest undertaking thus far. Thankfully, the world of faith for profit is more than ripe for picking apart especially with how much religious gatherings have thrown a wrench into COVID-19 protocols.

Thus, you ought to look forward to second season of The Righteous Gemstones on Jan. 9th on HBO and HBO Max. From the looks of the trailer, they’re going bigger than in season 1. DeVine has his literal own christian army, McBride tries to hug someone through a plastic tarp on TV because of COVID, and Eric Andre is going to be tangling with the Gemstones. See all the wondrous madness for yourself here.

‘Hogan’s Heroes’ Modern Day Reboot in the Works from Series Co-Creator Al Ruddy and EPs Danny McBride, David Gordon Green, and Jody Hill

‘Hogan’s Heroes’ Modern Day Reboot in the Works from Series Co-Creator Al Ruddy and EPs Danny McBride, David Gordon Green, and Jody Hill

Certainly, there’s no question that remake/reboot fatigue has set in and the prospect of just mining old IPs to cash in on nostalgia is getting tiresome.

That being said, having the seemingly unstoppable team of Danny McBride, David Gordon Green, and Jody Hill (responsible for most of McBride’s projects) attached in some capacity gives us some hope for a rebooted, modern day version Hogan’s Heroes from series co-creator Al Ruddy. We’ll be very curious to see the level of involvement they’ll have with this project (it’s still in its very early stages) that will see the descendants of the original characters going on a treasure hunt.

Your mind is already imagining how a McBride type character would fit into this, right?

Danny McBride’s ‘The Righteous Gemstones’ Renewed for Season 2 at HBO

It’s almost unsurprising how good Danny McBride’s The Righteous Gemstones is (and we’re only a few episodes in). McBride’s consistency up for dark comedy excellence with Eastbound & Down and Vice Principals is held up by this examination of a televangelist family coming apart fast at the seams.

So, it’s almost expected that The Righteous Gemstones would get a second season over at HBO. We can’t wait to see what McBride and co. do with this second season, especially if you’ve heard all the directions that he has gone with this first season on his ep. of The Good One Podcast.

Looks like Danny McBride, John Goodman, Adam Devine, and Edi Patterson are going to serve up something, if we may, so damn “righteous” in this televangelist family satire, The Righteous Gemstones. Every bit we see of this looks like the perfect follow-up for McBride after Vice Principals and, thankfully, the premiere isn’t too far from now on Aug. 18th on HBO.

In the meantime, please enjoy the full trailer for The Righteous Gemstones here.

Fans of Eastbound & Down, Vice Principals, and anything Danny McBride may rejoice as McBride is returning to HBO with his televangelist satire The Righteous Gemstones.

Set for its series premiere on Aug. 18th, it sure looks like McBride is back in full, lovable scoundrel form along with a perfectly cast John Goodman and Adam Devine. Together, they’re playing a scandalous televangelist family and you’ll probably want to set a reminder to watch when it debuts.

HBO Orders Televangelist Comedy ‘The Righteous Gemstones’ From Danny McBride to Series

Amateur baseball. High school administration. And now, televised ministry.

If you can imagine it, it’s three points in an ever expanding Danny McBride-HBO universe (including Eastbound & Down and Vice Principals) that paints an always entertaining, but razor sharp satirical portrait of America.

Danny McBride’s latest project The Righteous Gemstones just got a series order at the premium cable network and will feature him squaring off against John Goodman within a family of a televangelists. Of course, they wheel and deal in greed as much as they do with “the good book”.

We’ll be looking forward to when this premieres, we’re guessing sometime later next year.

Now, we can’t help but wonder if there ever will be any crossing over between McBride’s shows (even if it’s only some one-off sketch released online).

Danny McBride Takes Boneheaded Vengeance on the Housing Market Crash in “Arizona” (Trailer)

August 14, 2018
Uncategorized

Almost without question, Danny McBride has made America fall in love with his spot on portrayals of misguided rage. Watching such a thing with the backdrop of the current moment is even more perfect pairing than when Foot Fist Way was whispered about between Adam McKay and Will Ferrell.

Arizona, a feature film debut for director Jonathan Watson and writer Luke Del Tredici (producer on 30 Rock, Brooklyn Nine Nine, Bored to Death), follows McBride as a victim of the Subprime Mortgage Crisis/House Market Crash from almost a decade ago who opts to get revenge.

If The Big Short had a cinematic universe, this would likely be a story within it.

The trailer promises some dark fun and you can see all of it for yourself here.

Arizona hits theaters later this month on Aug. 24th.

Not in recent memory can we remember revenge looking like such fun as Danny McBride’s foolishly headstrong Neal Gamby is hellbent on revenge in the second and conclusive season to Vice Principals on HBO with the “help” of Walton Goggins’ Lee Russell.

The result, according to this official season 2 trailer, has Gamby attempting to be a True-Detective-Taxi-Driver (Gamby is definitely taking cues from Bickle’s playbook in Scorsese’s Taxi Driver) type, but doing so as only McBride can.

Season 2 of Vice Principals premieres on HBO on Sunday, September 17th.

Though it might not seem like there’s any room left to escalate the tension for Vice Principals, it looks like second and final season of the show will just do that.

Keep in mind the second season is the final season of Vice Principals.

Knowing Danny McBride and Jody Hill work, we have no doubt they’ll being going for broke (even more than they already have) with this series knowing that they don’t have to bring anyone back next year.

So, as a nod to all of that, here’s a teaser of what’s to come on Sunday, September 17th on HBO.

HBO Signs an Overall Deal with Danny McBride, Jody Hill, David Gordon Green and Brandon James AKA Rough House Pictures

Based off Eastbound & Down and Vice Principals, we’d say that’s a pretty smart move.

Rough House Pictures, the production company that Danny McBride, Jody Hill, David Gordon Green, and Brandon James run in order to make the two much lauded comedy series, is now getting a bigger playground to play with at HBO than they ever have before.

This two year deal will have the Rough House team develop series exclusively for HBO. With that in mind, we have a good feeling about HBO comedy through the rest of this decade.

Danny McBride and Walton Goggins Make Their Debut as Two of the Most Conniving “Vice Principals” Ever Tonight

10:30PM on HBO.

The series premiere of Vice Principals is tonight on HBO and, having gotten to see a sneak preview of the first two episodes, we’ll say that Danny McBride, Jody Hill, and David Gordon Green probably exceed whatever expectations you have for the series.

All of the unapologetic buffoonery from Eastbound and Down comes to the setting of a high school, but what makes the series especially exciting is that you know that it’s only going to last 18 episodes. Because of that, there’s an even juicier tension through the catastrophic shenanigans between McBride and Goggins trying to become the lone principal as their days are numbered.

Again, watch it at 10:30PM tonight.

“Vice Principals” Is Self-Cancelling After Two Seasons on HBO

(via Variety)

All 18 episodes have been written and shot already.

Originally, Vice Principals was written as a long movie that got made even longer and then chopped up into just two seasons that will air by Danny McBride and Jody Hill. In this way, McBride and Hill got to tell the story they wanted to tell on their terms with very little meddling from HBO.

That’s faith from a network that believes that McBride, Hill, and EP/director David Gordon Green will probably make something else great not too long after Vice Principals ends and, with the freedom they’ve been granted, will look to HBO first.

Danny McBride is returning to HBO for yet another series that affords McBride more taunting, shouting, and overall histrionics.
