TCB Debriefing 7/21-8/10: Roy Wood Jr. on CNN, Inside Out TV Series, Saturday Night Trailer+++

August 10, 2024
News
adam sandler, brian jordan alvarez, carmen christopher, chloe radcliffe, cnn, danny mcbride, english teacher, fx, high plains comedy festival, How to Die Alone, hulu, inside out, james adomian, jason reitman, john early, jordan peele, mitch hedberg, Molly Kearney, natasha rothwell, netflix, punch up, punkie johnson, ramy youssef, roy wood jr, sam morril, saturday night, scare tactics, snowflakes, solar opposites, southern book club's guide to slaying vampires, stephanie hsu, the incredibles, toy story, veeps

1. Roy Wood Jr. will be hosting his own topical panel show on, not Comedy Central, but CNN with Have I Got News For You. While The Daily Show did get Jon Stewart back, there is an unmistakable feeling that they missed out here.

2. Disney’s own version of Comic Con, D23, is this weekend and the big takeaway is that Mickey and company will be sticking with their big hits from Pixar in the form of an Inside Out series, another sequel to The Incredibles, and another sequel to Toy Story (which begs the question how much more existential crises can they explore through the nature of sentient toys).

3. Let’s call that a take 2 on Studio 60, but this time, from Jason Reitman that actually tackles the origin story of SNL head on (and it looks pretty damn great). Take a gander at the trailer for Saturday Night here, then look for it in theaters come Oct. 11th.

4. Adam Sandler took a big leap into the Safdie Brothers’ world when diving into Uncut Gems, and Josh Safdie is returning the favor by directing Sandler’s latest stand-up special, Love You (take a look at the trailer here). Let’s see if this leads to a Safdie Brothers slapstick comedy. Love You will hit Netflix later this month on Aug. 27th.

5. The High Plains Comedy Festival in Denver, CO is still one of the very best comedy festivals around (and is coming up soon on Sept. 19th-21st). Peep their first line-up announcement! THEN, go get your fest passes here.

6. Given how truly insane the winds of change feels these days, a wave of absurdism/non-sequitur/unapologetic deconstructionist satire in a comedy special (as opposed to more litanies of crowd-work-fueled comedy specials) feels more than needed. Fortunately, Carmen Christopher has come through with his latest and very hilarious special Live from the Windy City that serves up many shots of all those ingredients in addition to thankfully showcasing Christopher’s stand up chops in a non-COVID-socially-distanced setting. If you’re any level of fan of I Think You Should Leave, you might recognized Carmen from a sketch or two and, as such, you’re really going to dig Live from the Windy City (after all, Tim Robinson does have his name attached to this special). Live from the Windy City is now streaming on VEEPS and you can (and should) stream it here.

7. While Abbott Elementary has the hearts and minds of America’s primetime viewing audience, FX is giving the high school work place comedy its own treatment with English Teacher from Brian Jordan Alvarez (that seems to have the same very satisfying bite that Election had over 20 years ago). Also, Sean Patton as Markie might be TV’s latest scene stealer. See for yourself with the trailer here, then look for the premiere on FX/Hulu on Sept. 2nd.

8. James Adomian, who voices many of your favorite adult animated series, is one of comedy’s best minds and voices and has been for years now. Thankfully, his very first hour special is due out on 800 Pound Gorilla on Aug. 16th and then, for everyone, on Sept. 19th. Please enjoy his retro comedy special trailer for Path of Most Resistance here.

9. After having some of the very best moments in season 1 of White Lotus, Natasha Rothwell is taking center stage with her very own series How to Die Alone, a comedy following a carpe-diem-turn for a woman who is afraid to fly, but works an airport. See what Natasha has up her sleeve with the trailer for How To Die Alone here, then look for it exclusively on Hulu come Sept. 13th.

10. Both Punkie Johnson and Molly Kearney are leaving SNL, which means the new cast announcement for the next season might be big (and plenty diverse).

11. Ramy Youssef has signed a first look deal with Netflix, which is yet another step for the rising comedy star. Note that this doesn’t mean he has the answer to achieving peace in the Middle East (only great jokes about it).

12. Quinta Brunson and Stephanie Hsu are teaming up on a comedy feature for Universal. No plot details are available at this time, which leaves us to assume that it’s about a multiverse of public schools that also don’t have enough funding.

13. It’s about time there was a Mitch Hedberg documentary especially considering that he set an intention of telling jokes without references so he could be timeless. Keep an eye out for this doc from 222-2222 Films.

13. While Chloe Radcliffe is in Edinburgh right now racking up well deserved acclaimed for her marvelous solo show, CHEAT, let’s not forget that Chloe is really damn good at stand-up. See her Don’t Tell set here for proof.

14. Not only is the fifth season of Solar Opposites around the corner (Aug. 12th on Hulu) and it just got renewed for another season, but it seems as any lingering controversy with Justin Roiland’s exit is well in the rear view mirror. All looks like a well oiled machine in this trailer for the new season.

15. In addition to Sam Morril making his Amazon debut with his brand spankin’ new special You’ve Changed, there’s, essentially, a bonus track of crowd work/material available exclusively on newly forged comedian streaming platform PunchUp called “Buying Drinks”. If you loved Sam’s rooftop stuff, you’ll love this.

16. In addition to doing a sharply honed high school comedy, it would seem FX is angling on a Gen-Z version of Friends with their new series, Snowflakes. Shout out to comedian Malik Elassal has is kind of having a banner year in 2024.

17. We don’t know how many seasons What We Do In the Shadows will ultimately go, but thank goodness Danny McBride is getting to work on adapting his own vampire comedy from Grady Hendrix’s book The Southern Book Club’s Guide to Slaying Vampires.

18. While a return to pure comedy might seem unlikely for acclaimed horror director Jordan Peele, him taking on prank series Scare Tactics is a welcome dip back into comedy. Look for Peele to possibly revolutionize prank shows later this Fall on USA Network.

19. We’ll leave you with this: Free tickets to John Early @ The Bellwether on 9/17 anyone? Yes? Hit us up at thecomedybureau@gmail.com and we’ll see if we can hook you up.

TCB Debriefing 2/12-2/15/24: Bad Play, This Fool, Adam Sandler, Hannah Gadsby, Abbott Elementary, Caleb Hearon

February 16, 2024
News
abbott elementary, adam sandler, bad play, Caleb Hearon, hannah gadsby, kyle kinane, this fool, united theater

1. Big Tobacco, the sketch group and not the corporate beast, made one of the best satires/mash-ups of an art form we’ve ever seen with a wonderfully searing send up of prestige live theater, Bad Play. Round of applause to Brad Beidman, Brian Fitzgerald, Lyndsey Kempf, and Eli Lutsky and a thanks to them now that Bad Play is on YouTube for you to watch just in case you couldn’t make it to the Yard Theater or the Hollywood Fringe when it first made a big splash. Please enjoy Bad Play here.

2. Hulu makes an utterly stupid move by cancelling This Fool (THR) after two critically acclaimed seasons. So much for a full on Bear x This Fool crossover ep.

3. Adam Sandler’s next special will be directed by one of Josh Safdie, whom Sandler previously worked on in pulse pounding sports gambling thriller, Uncut Gems (Deadline). Perhaps, we’ll get an answer to what a handheld stand-up special would be like, especially with some sort of dire ticking clock at play.

4. While it has been a bit since a big time comedian (maybe just a couple of years?) has put their name on a stand-up comedy showcase to present their favorite comedians, we’re really glad to see Hannah Gadsby throw their hat in this ring with a showcase of gender redefining comedians including ALOK, Chloe Petts, DeAnne Smith, Ashley Ward, Jes Tom, Mx. Dahlia Belle, and Krishna Istha (i.e. some of the best stand-ups working today). It really is going to be grand Mar. 5th when Gender Agenda premieres. See for yourself with the first trailer here, then set a remind for Mar. 5th to watch this immediately.

5. Abbott Elementary, the latest torchbearer of the Christopher Guest lineage of mockumentaries and, perhaps, one of the most heartfelt, touching ones yet is renewed for season 4 just as season 3 premiered (Variety).

6. One of the very best in comedy these days, Kyle Kinane, (just go watch Shocks & Struts if you need a refresher) has slated his latest hour, Dirt Nap, for March 4th. You can pre-order it now and get your first peep of it right here.

7. Caleb Hearon is already a star, but is about to have his IMDB STARmeter get upped to where it’s supposed to be with him starring in Lily Wachowski’s upcoming dramedy, Trash Mountain (Variety).

8. We’ll leave you with this: While the Ace Hotel is going to close, the theater formerly known as The Theatre at the Ace Hotel will live on as The United Theater on Broadway (a nod to its past as The United Artists Theater). The big gala shows for Netflix Is a Joke Festival are safe.

TCB Debriefing 9/14/23: Henry Sugar, Adam Sandler Tour, Diffidate delle Imitazioni, Murray Hill, Big Mouth, Mr & Mrs Smith, Our Flag Means Death

1. It shouldn’t really come as a surprise that a Wes Anderson film adapted from a Roald Dahl book would seem to be an utter delight and yet another colorful addition to Anderson’s storied filmography. We’re thrilled that it was only a few short months ago that Asteroid City came out and we’re now treated to another helping of Wes Anderson so soon. So, without further adieu, take your first gander at The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar starring Benedict Cumberbatch, due out on Netflix on Sept. 27th.

2. Adam Sandler is going back on tour from Oct. 12th-Dec. 12th (Billboard). His last tour and special were some of Sandler’s most cherished work to date, especially outside of things like Uncut Gems.

3. Diffidate delle Imitazioni (literally translated as Beware of Imitations, but will be called Fake Show in English) is a brand new Italian comedy game show, ordered by Rai, where Italian celebrities will improvise based off of suggestions and prompts generated by AI (Deadline). Though it might try, AI will not best Clive Anderson as an improv show host.

4. Frequent scene stealer Murray Hill (Live & Beth and Somebody Somewhere) is coming out with his very first memoir, Showbiz! My Unexpected Life as a Middle-Aged Man, which appears to have more than just a story of making it in the Big Apple. It’s set for 2025 release, but we’re sure we’ll get tid bits and morsels leading up to that day.

5. Just a little more than a month of waiting before you get Big Mouth season 7 (specifically, Oct. 20th on Netflix).

6. The premiere of Donald Glover and Maya Erskine‘s Mr. and Mrs. Smith is delayed due to the ongoing strike and its prohibition of promoting certain big time movies and TV series (THR). If the studios do end up going rogue from the streamers and tech giants, we might have to wait even longer to see this.

7. This full length trailer for season 2 of Our Flag Means Death almost makes you want to go back in time to make piracy more like it is between Taika Waititi and Rhys Darby. Season 2 sets sail on Thurs. Oct. 5th.

8. Nothing Bill Maher does on this writer-less return of Real Time will top Conan O’Brien spinning his wedding ring.

Pick of the Day: Adam Sandler (near NYC) 10/27

September 30, 2022
News
adam sandler, belmont park, long island, nyc comedy, stand up

In 2018, seemingly out of nowhere, Adam Sandler released 100% Fresh on Netflix, his first comedy special in seemingly forever and arguably, his most widely appreciated work to date. Jumping from performance to performance with punchy and heartfelt songs and stories was a welcome respite from a non-stop barrage of Trump tweeting all the time.

Now, Sandler is back out touring and has a big date set for Thurs. Oct. 27th at 8PM at the UBS Arena in Long Island’s Belmont Park. If you’re not looking to do anything to spooky for Halloween weekend, this is probably one of your best bets in the NYC area.

Do take note that this is a hot ticket as they’re starting of $89 plus whatever Live Nation is charging for fees these days and go up all the way to $453. Go snag them here before you have to buy them on resale for a markup.

It takes a special sort of comedian to release their very first hour of comedy during a global pandemic after going through recording it far from home in the UK. Lisa Curry is that special sort of comedian on top of having a really great penchant for dark humor. Curry zooms with TCB’s Jake Kroeger about taking such a leap as well as Curry coming very, very close to so many big breaks, but coming up short or being left in the dark as to what happened until she reads her fate in the trades. That even includes coming close to plenty of this week’s news items covering Last Week Tonight‘s renewal, Nicole Byer and John Cena hosting the newest Wipeout, Borat 2, and Guy Branum getting to develop his very own scripted series at NBC.

Follow Lisa Curry at LisaCurry.net and please get her brand new debut album Alive for a While.

Shout Outs: Adam Sandler’s 100%  Fresh, Taylor Tomlinson’s Quarter Life Crisis, Ryan Hamilton’s Happy Face, Beth Stelling’s Girl Daddy, Katie Hughes’ Queen of the Castle

(via The Film Stage)

There are only a few details to wrap our heads around right now, but we’re still reeling from Baumbach and Gerwig’s Mistress America from last year and will be keeping a close eye on this.

At this point, we know that production has just started, it follows an estranged NYC family getting ready an art retrospective of a patriarch, Adam Sandler and Ben Stiller star along with Dustin Hoffman, Emma Thompson, and Grace Van Patten, and the film’s current title Yen Din Ka Kissa translates to The Story of The Day in Hindi).

Again, it’s only a few details at this point, but we can see how this could have the makings for another great movie from a rare auteur in this era of comedy, Noah Baumbach.

Many comedians that already built a bright career and also had a stellar future ahead of them were taken away from us all and the art form of comedy way too early.

One of those that was taken tragically way too early was one Chris Farley, who you probably still remember fondly from Saturday Night Live, Beverly Hills Ninja, and more.

The documentary I Am Chris Farley takes a look at the far too short lived life of Farley with interviews with Bob Odenkirk, Lorne Michaels, Adam Sandler, David Spade, and many more.

Watch the trailer here and look for its theatrical realase on July 31st.

Steve Buscemi, Dustin Hoffman, and Method Man Join Adam Sandler in ‘The Cobbler’

For those of you waiting for Adam Sandler to take his next role that was akin to ones he had in Punch Drunk Love and Reign Over Me, this Tom McCarthy (director of Win Win) directed indie comedy project, The Cobbler, might just be it.

Also, having Steve Buscemi, Dustin Hoffman, and Method Man added to the cast doesn’t hurt.
