TCB Debriefing 12/13/23: Kenny DeForest, Netflix Is a Joke Fest, Trevor Noah/Anthony Anderson/Greta Gerwig, Lena Dunham

December 14, 2023
News
anthony anderson, cannes, emmys, grammys, greta gerwig, kenny deforest, lena dunham, netflix is a joke fest, trevor noah

1. Truly, deeply rest in peace, Kenny DeForest. A wondrous human being and great comedian taken from us all far too early (as you can see in the outpour of tribute and grief in his name). For now, what might be best would be donate to his Memorial Fund that was formerly a Recovery Fund and also watch his latest special, Don’t You Know Who I Am?, which came out just a few months ago (again, Kenny was on the path doing many a great thing in comedy).

2. Netflix Is a Joke Fest makes its first announcement of many about the hundreds of big time comedians and dozens of venues that will be happening in and around LA come May 2024. Go peep the schedule and get tickets here.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Netflix Is A Joke (@netflixisajoke)

3. Trevor Noah is back at the Grammys, Anthony Anderson is stepping up to the hosting plate for The Emmys, and Greta Gerwig, riding high off of Barbie, will be the Cannes Film Festival Jury President all next year. Come to think of it, we would be thoroughly intrigued at the prospect of Greta Gerwig hosting an awards show, especially since she also can do this.

4. Lena Dunham has an ex-pat rom com going at Netflix that’s set to star Meg Stalter (Hacks) and Will Sharpe (White Lotus S2) (Variety). Having Meg Stalter as the star of series/movies is definitely where the future of comedy should be headed.

5. We’ll leave you with this: Shout out to every comedy album and special that’s coming out right now and won’t be able to be considered for “2023 Best Of” lists.

The Comedy Bureau Field Report Ep. 135: Jane Harrison & Not Having to Go Up All the Time to Be a Comedian

October 26, 2022
News, The Comedy Bureau Field Report
Jane Harrison, pretty good friends, trevor noah

There is a narrative in the world of comedy that one must be going up as much as possible to be and maintain status as an amazing comedian. Jane Harrison stands in defiance of this notion as she is still one of the funniest people telling jokes in and around LA despite doing so rarely. In fact, she made sure to note to us that she hasn’t been doing comedy a lot at this juncture in her life when we invited her to be a guest. This week’s TCB Field Report talks to Jane about reimagining what really goes into being a comedian and what makes one really happy and how the two can intertwine without burning yourself out or getting jaded.

Trevor Noah to Exit The Daily Show and the Future of Late Night Is More Uncertain Than Ever

September 30, 2022
News
daily show, trevor noah

Trevor Noah is marking the end of his era of The Daily Show after 7 years of being sat behind the desk that one Jon Stewart made such an indelible mark on before him. Noah announced his intentions to step down in the near future on last night’s Daily Show, mainly to return to his first love, stand-up. His exit marks an ongoing shake-up in late night this year with Full Frontal with Samantha Bee ending, Desus & Mero parting ways and ending their Showtime series, James Corden announcing his own exit from The Late Late Show, and, of course, Conan O’Brien stepping away from his legendary late night desk just last Summer.

Where does this leave late night as a format and the talent that comes with it?

Jimmy Kimmel and Jimmy Fallon seem to be sticking around for the foreseeable future (as does Seth Meyers and John Oliver), Amber Ruffin, Ziwe, and Sam Jay are all still very promising upstarts doing all very different things that break the mold of Steve Allen’s Tonight Show that became the standard nearly 70 years ago. Yet, what lies ahead for any of them and late night programming in general is anyone’s guess (and that includes Lorne Michaels).

Linear TV continually being supplanted by streaming services has made the “late night” moniker more of a genre these days as opposed to being respective to the actual air time. As such, it should come as no surprise that clips of late night on YouTube often get more eyes than actual live viewers during its initial broadcast. This has created an ever growing identity crisis with what is considered to be “late night”.

Much of the content on any given network late night show these days seem much more family friendly than pre-YouTube days, especially when it comes to Fallon or Corden. Then, on the other end, there’s Last Week Tonight with John Oliver that uses all the freedom that comes with being on HBO shouting expletives and getting plenty graphic with jokes on every episode. In between those two are Stephen Colbert and Jimmy Kimmel who do opening monologues made digestible for the mainstream left and having the occasional “very special episode” where they get earnest, maybe even teary.

Trevor Noah’s era of The Daily Show has been markedly different from Jon Stewart’s with much more measure and poise, often bordering on an actual news show. Noah didn’t do famous takedowns of pizza, Arby’s, or Jim Cramer, but was a cleverly soothing voice of calm amidst the particularly catastrophic socio-political-cultural storm we’ve been in since 2015. That said, his seven year run falls far short of Stewart’s nearly 20 year run at The Daily Show and it feels less like the abrupt end of an era, and mark a mark of continued exploration as to what is actually going to be the direction and look and feel of late night in the 2020s and 2030s and onwards.

We’re confident that late night will endure as a genre because audiences crave some sort of comedic comfort/respite/catharsis from whatever chaos that day or week has wrought. As to how Gen Z wants to consume or who they would want to listen to, we’re, yet again, not sure.

Will Comedy Central replace Trevor? Will Comedy Central even keep The Daily Show going after he leaves? It’s all very unclear as one might rightfully ponder what Comedy Central’s future as a network might be. Inside Amy Schumer‘s latest season will be streaming exclusively on Paramount+ rather than any Comedy Central app or digital platform leaving us wondering what Paramount has in store for the network as a whole.

In the event that Comedy Central decides to continue The Daily Show, we do maintain the same stance we had when Jon Stewart stepped down regarding his replacement. Hire Cameron Esposito.

Trevor Noah to Be First Comedian to Host White House Correspondents Dinner Since 2018

News

(via Politco)

It seems like eons ago when there was a civil enough discourse that would allow for the President of the United States to be roasted on C-SPAN by one of the country’s most renowned comedians. Because Donald J. Trump is a narcissistic twerp, perhaps one of the biggest of all time, he chose to be absent from the White House Correspondents Dinner and consequently made it more acrimonious when Hasan Minhaj and Michelle Wolf took on hosting duties. Many experts actually point to Seth Meyers taking Trump to task at the White House Correspondents Dinner in 2011 as the fiery spark that made him run for POTUS to expedite the disillusionment of the American Empire.

That’s all to say we haven’t had a White House Correspondents Dinner like Colbert did of George W. Bush in a very long time. After Trump and COVID making the WHCD into a footnote over the last few years, the White House Correspondents Association is set on having it return to form on this side of the pandemic come Apr. 30th. Trevor Noah, the current host of The Daily Show, is set to host, and, hopefully, he’ll get to satirize President Biden and Vice President Harris to their face and tell off mainstream media on one of the least watched cable channels live on air.

That will make it six years since we even had a WHCD to watch and that ought to make it a certain type of special. With all that in mind, we really hope that Noah and his writing staff spares no punches.

Like Trevor Noah says in this interview, Tiffany Haddish is the human equivalent of a sun shining light to us all.

She shares some stories with Noah that are all written down (and spoken in audiobook form) in her new book The Last Black Unicorn, which you can (and should) get here.

As you can clearly see (as well as hear on her episode of The Crabfeast), it’ll be one hell of a book.

The President Show, Drunk History, and The Daily Show to Have Holiday Specials

More specifically…

  • Drunk History Christmas Special will air on Tuesday, November 28 at 10PM featuring Rob Corddry, Colin Hanks, Ken Marino and Chris Witaske.
  • I Came Up with Christmas: A President Show Christmas Hour-Long Holiday Special debuts Thursday, November 30 at 10PM.
  • The Daily Show’s The Yearly Show 2017 Hour-Long Year-End Special Hosted by Trevor Noah featuring The Best F#@king News Team premieres Monday, December 18 at 11PM.

Because one of Drunk History’s most beloved episodes focused on Christmas and The President Show handled Halloween pretty well (in addition to the whole show being one of the best comedic takes on Trump, end of discussion), we’re actually looking forward to these specials.

Trevor Noah to Host The Daily Show Through 2022

Many late night hosts have their future secured up until 2020 and Comedy Central is more than doubling down on their current Daily Show host, Trevor Noah, who did win a Creative Arts Emmy.

No one else in late night is currently renewed that far in the future (Fallon is re-upped to 2021), which will see Trevor far past the next presidential election. It’s hard to say how exactly it’ll look, but we have no doubt that late night will have gone through many more changes by the time 2022 rolls around. Suffice it to say that Comedy Central has a whole lot of faith in Noah.

The Daily Show’s “Donald J. Trump Presidential Twitter Library” Pop-Up Exhibition Happening This Weekend in NYC

This weekend, a whole pop-up museum dedicated to examining POTUS’ Twitter account will open in NYC thanks to The Daily Show at 3 West 57th Street near Fifth Avenue.

You’ll be able to tweet from a golden toilet, watch a montage of what Trump thinks is “Sad!”, hear stories of people who got into a Twitter fight with Trump, and other such exhibits that would normally exist in museum, but focused completely on @realdonaldtrump on Twitter. While this is all done in the name of continuing to send up Trump and the absurdity of his administration, his tweets are, unfortunately, are and will forever be important to the historical record.

You’ll be able to check it out, free of charge, from 11AM-7PM, Friday, June 16th-Sunday, June 18th.

President Barack Obama Will Be on The Daily Show with Trevor Noah Next Monday

Given that these are the final weeks of Obama’s presidency that will transition into a Trump presidency (barring something crazy happening by way of faithless electors), this interview on The Daily Show with Trevor Noah will be more historic than it should be. If any other presidential candidate on either side had won the election, it would have the potential to be more of a footnote. Since a reality TV star is now set to be POTUS, appearances on satirical comedy programs and late night are given as more weight than they ever have.

Honestly, we’d be surprised if the conversation was very funny as there are more important matters than getting to bits. Still, Obama will go down as one of the funniest President and it would be hard to imagine him not taking to opportunity to deliver another zinger on The Daily Show.

We don’t know exactly what will happen during this appearance, but it should be a good reminder that Obama will be sticking around fighting to maintain his legacy and prevent the unraveling of democracy.

Tune in Monday, December 12th at 11PM for this inevitably historic moment.

Trevor Noah Solidifies Voice as Host of The Daily Show in Interview with Tomi Lahren

Last night, Trevor Noah’s interview with outspoken conservative pundit Tomi Lahren showed that Noah can own The Daily Show with his own voice that’s distinctly different from Jon Stewart.

In transitioning from the cultural institution that was The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, many different strategies have been employed in having Trevor Noah take the baton successfully from Stewart.

Accomplishing that has been tricky, to say the least, with the departure of longtime favorites Stephen Colbert, Samantha Bee, and John Oliver to do their own late night show elsewhere and having much of America meeting Noah for the first time as a host of The Daily Show rather than the insanely popular, globe trotting comedian first.

In an interview that reaches almost 30 minutes, Trevor might have found the groove that will see him through as the host and these upcoming years of the Trump Administration.

It’s not Stewart’s famous takedown of Jim Mad Money Cramer, but that’s not what suits Noah. Instead, poise and calm let him have a rational debate with the fiery Lahren and gave room to pick apart her arguments at his pace with the occasional satirical poke here and there. It’s engaging on Noah’s terms and might be precedent for more counterpoint-type guests for him in the future.

Watch and see for yourself in full, extended interview at the link above.

A recent initiative, dubbed “extreme vetting”, was added to Donald Trump’s controversial immigration policy this week. It calls for questioning of potential immigrants’ sympathies toward extremist religious views, LBGTQ people, women, etc.

With this litmus test, The Daily Show’s Jordan Klepper wanted to see how many a Trump supporter would fare on this ‘extreme vetting’ test and did some field research at a Trump rally to find out.

Spoiler alert: you probably won’t be surprised by the results whatsoever.

Despite recent unfavorable reviews and pieces written about The Daily Show’s new host, Trevor Noah, the heads of Comedy Central want to assure you that they’re still jazzed about Noah and where he could take the show.

This week’s Comedy Central Upfronts presentation had Network President Michelle Ganeless and Original Programming Chief Kent Alterman commenting on the reception of Noah after a few months of hosting The Daily Show. They redoubled the confidence in their choice by saying, “We fully believe in him, we feel like he keeps finding his voice more and more,” and adding that they have “a deep reservoir of patience”.

If you’re in the camp that pines for the days of Jon Stewart, you should know that there’s plenty of that to be had with Daily Show with Jon Stewart alums John Oliver and Samantha Bee and their respective shows Last Week Tonight and Full Frontal.

‘Adele Carpool Karaoke’ Record Is Milestone in New Era of Late Night

As of this post, Adele Carpool Karaoke is almost at the 70 million view mark on YouTube, which, according to Deadline, is now the new pinnacle of viral late night clips.

For decades, the format of the late night talk show had pretty much stayed the same with all the trappings of monologues, well tailored suits, desk pieces, celebrity guests, bands.

Now, in the 2010s, the tried and true format of late night is no longer tried and true. Rather than hanging out and hearing the crazy stories of famous people, viewers of late night seem to want to see something crazy actually happen on the show and perhaps only that.

James Corden took over The Late Late Show from Craig Ferguson only last year, relatively unknown in America, and has now scored a viral video that has out performed all the silly games that Jimmy Fallon, the late night leader pretty much from his start at The Tonight Show, plays with A-listers pretty much every night that he tapes an episode.

When Corden inherited The Late Late Show, there was scarcely any online presence for The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson as brief out-of-context interview clips were the only thing that would CBS would bother uploading on to YouTube. There is a reason that Corden went from pretty much zero to 70 million hits in a matter of a months.

The Internet and, more specifically, YouTube and social media, have commodified late night TV into more of a spectacle than it ever was. Remote segments, games, trips outside the studio are all things that are resonating with the current landscape of late night. Adele singing and joking around with James Corden being the most watched late night YouTube clip perfectly illustrates this change.

Such things specifically include Conan O’Brien doing any of his segments out in the wild or going abroad, Jimmy Fallon’s Lip Sync Battle, the pranks that Jimmy Kimmel hatches or his ongoing faux feud with Matt Damon, the deep segments on Last Week Tonight with John Oliver that are uploaded early Monday morning. You’ll note that you’ve probably seen all of these an almost innumerable times on your various social media feeds, both in embedded video and in .gif form.

Sure, Letterman used to throw random things off of a roof and Leno used to find dumb people out on the street who didn’t know what we’d all assume is basic common knowledge for JayWalking. However, in 2016, you don’t have to watch all of The Late Show or The Tonight Show just to get to watch those segments or bits. At any time of the day, you can watch just those specific parts, over and over and over, and nothing else.

With this being the case, many of those aforementioned late night tropes like the opening monologue of topical jokes and desk pieces are slowly fading in relevance in favor of what makes for the most viral sounding headline.

When Conan does entire special episodes where he travels to remote locations, it more resembles something that Anthony Bourdain would do rather than The Tonight Show starring Johnny Carson.

Last Week Tonight, @midnight, and now, Full Frontal with Samantha Bee all offer something also atypical of what late night has been for so very long by trading chats with celebrities for dozens more topical jokes that aren’t merely delivered while standing on stage without a video package to throw to. Their success is signs of the winds of change at 11PM onwards.

With all of that being said, the old guard late night talk show is, for now, still in tact. Stephen Colbert is, in a surprising turn from The Colbert Report, presenting a very high brow, well executed version of the traditional late night talk show. In fact, Colbert pulls off many feats as a late night talk show host, especially when it comes to who he books and how he interviews or interacts with who he books, that his competition cannot because they’re off focusing on all the things mentioned above. Whether he can ascend to the top of the mountain of late night like his predecessor David Letterman did and stay there has yet to be seen, but Colbert definitely has the brilliance to do so.

Oh yeah, because of Trevor Noah, Larry Wilmore, and Samantha Bee, there is finally more than one late night show right now not hosted by a white guy.

Though they’re inevitably some doubters and skeptics, all these new trends are probably for the best. When it’s easier to watch live TV and stream content on the Internet on the same device (and that’s probably pretty soon), know that late night is only going to get more shaken up.

The former host of The Daily Show, Jon Stewart, did indeed make a return to said Daily Show last night. He wasn’t filling in for Trevor, as his t-shirt and jeans might suggest, or there to promote some book or movie he was working on. Stewart only sought the platform to make sure that the Zadroga Bill, which ensures proper health care for 9/11 first responders, will be renewed.

As longtime fans of The Daily Show know, Stewart is at his most affecting when he’s fired up about the issue and he did so in the two segments he got last night.
