Some NYC Live Performance Venues Will Be Allowed to Reopen in April (Though How That’ll Work for Comedy Is TBD)

March 3, 2021
News
new york, reopening

(via New York Times)

Some select venues throughout New York will be, starting April 2nd, permitted to resume live in-person shows with 33% capacity that goes up to 100 people maximum for indoor events and 200 people maximum for outdoor events. Also, people in attendance will have to provide a negative COVID-19 test and need to have a face covering as well as be socially distanced from each other.

So, comedy clubs/venues that are often very intimate meaning that 33% capacity will very likely not provide the revenue to make a profit or even break even. That is almost doubly true due to the incurred costs to be in compliance for COVID-19 protocol, providing PPE to staff, etc. The trajectory of the next month in regards to downtrending COVID-19 cases in tandem with the availability and distribution of any of the vaccines will be crucial.

That’s all to say that the fate of watching live stand-up inside a NYC comedy club is still very much up in the air. Until the majority of the world is inoculated, there’s a delicate balance, should any venue choose to operate right now, between safety and sustainability. There are a handful of outdoor NYC comedy shows that have been operating regardless of Gov. Cuomo or NYC Mayor Bill DeBlasio’s mandates throughout the last several months. The regulation of those have largely been left up to the producers of the shows themselves. A collective of small NYC venues have been vocal to both Cuomo and DeBlasio about transparency with their data pointing towards any sort of reopening plan leading up to this moment.

Again, we’ll have to see what happens on both sides of this reopening of live performance in the coming weeks and months. If all goes well, it might be another blueprint for major cities around the world reopening. If not (and that very well could happen), well, New Yorkers will be back to doing what most city dwellers are doing (or should be doing anyway) and staying home.

Thanks to festival director Coree Spencer, a new festival is coming to the ever-burgeoning comedy that’s just happening in Brooklyn (there’s already a few comedy festivals that regularly happen in Brooklyn alone) within the already giant NYC comedy scene.

Called the Cinder Block Comedy Festival due to a personal incident with a cinder block that Coree had, it’ll take over multiple venues throughout Williamsburg in Brooklyn from Wednesday, September 14th-Sunday, September 18th for its very first run.

As, Baron Vaughn, Laurie Kilmartin, Murderfist, Myq Kaplan, Ted Alexandro, Josh Gondelman, Mike Drucker, Kevin Avery, Frank Conniff, Mike Recine, Lynn Bixenspan, Sofiya Alexandra, Greg Edwards, Jess Lane, Baron Vaughn, Emmett Montgomery, Kevin Yee, and more (check out the full line-up here) are all slated to perform, we urge you to go to Cinder Block next month if you’re in, around, or close to NYC.

You can (and should) get your festival passes here.

New ‘Lucy’ Bronze Sculpture in Lucille Ball’s Hometown Captures the Lucy Everyone Knows and Love

As denizens of the Internet, you might be aware of a certain bronze likeness of comedy legend Lucille Ball in her New York hometown of Celeron referred to as ‘Scary Lucy’.

Since that’s been the case for years, a new bronze statue of Lucille Ball was commissioned and sculptor Carolyn Palmer just unveiled it this week.

You’ll agree, after getting a glimpse of it, that it’s a far cry from any sort of ‘scary’ description and much more fitting of the star of I Love Lucy.

1) Why can’t we have something like the Eugene Mirman Comedy Festival here in LA? This sounds pretty fantastic and maybe you should donate to the cause…

2) Real Life: My Girlfriend’s A Bitch with Iliza Shlesinger.

3) Punchline Magazine became Laughspin.com and now there’s a whole page of stuff we contribute.

4) So Kristen Wiig is the voice of Babs in this slightly disturbing reboot of Looney Tunes on Cartoon Network and will produce and star in a suicide themed comedy that focuses on a woman who fakes suicide to gain the attention of an ex-boyfriend.  We like this dark comedy streak by Wiig and hope it continues.

5) Remember when David Lynch used to do the daily weather? We’re surprised Lynch didn’t go the route of Rick Shapiro and his frequently posted and out of order Morning Meditations from Our Lady of No Thought Depot.

6) One of the more important things to note about GQ’s current “comedy” issue out on magazine racks now is that no one would know if it’s an issue about comedy if GQ didn’t tell anybody.

7) ON THE HORIZON
Jamie Kilstein-One Night Only @ Steve Allen Theater Mon. July 18th 8PM $10
The 2 & 45 @ All Star Lanes Mon. July 18th 8PM FREE

10) As reporting of Carmeggedon continues, people are calling the 405 the main freeway in LA. That’s bullshit. The 10 gets no respect? If you want a real Carmeggedon shut down the 10 freeway between the 405 and the 110. (I obviously drive too much and think about these things)
