We sincerely hope that, at this point, there’s something that you’ve come across in the work of Casey Wilson that you’ve loved. Happy Endings, Hotwives, Bitch Sesh, and so much more have brought Wilson to have such an extensive, cherished career ini comedy. Thus, she wrote a whole collection of essays about her time through all of it that’s lovingly called The Wreckage of My Presence. It’s set for release on May 4th, but you can (and should) pre-order here.

Of course, she’s going to do a book tour, but as a certain pandemic is still happening, it’ll have to be virtual. However, that’s an opportunity to support many lovely bookstores/venues/festivals as well as source out a very stacked collection of special guests as you can see below.

4/29 with June Diane Raphael
5/4 with Kristen Wiig via Skylight Books/Dynasty Typewriter
5/5 with Ziwe via Greenlight Booksttore
5/6 with Adam Pally via Sixth & I

Just from those few dates, that’s one hell of a book tour and you should go to any or all of these book release events for The Wreckage of My Presence.

The Comedy Bureau Field Report Ep. 56: Jessica Watkins & Getting Through

News, The Comedy Bureau Field Report

Far before the pandemic ever began or was even a whisper of a thing, Jessica Watkins took it upon to herself to simultaneously make a stand-up comedy special and walk across America. She did indeed accomplish both, but it was not at all what she expected, which is a very timely experience to have as we’ve all had to go through the intense journey of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Watkins’ captured her entire experience in a documentary called SPECIALish, a stunningly beautiful portrait and meditation on having purpose and drive in comedy, art, and life. After finishing the journey in 2014, the doc has been set for release on May 11th and, of course, TCB’s Jake Kroeger talks to Jessica all about that especially in relation to that journey in 2014 and how things have been comparatively in the terrifying specter of 2020/2021. Also, “hot” takes on Kristen Wiig and Annie Mumulo’s Cinderella evil stepsisters movie in the works, potential anti-trust case for LiveNation/Ticketmaster, and Seth Rogen’s silent action comedy passion project.

Follow Jessica at @ajessicawatkins on IG and Twitter and look out for SPECIALish on streaming platforms on May 11th.

Kristen Wiig & Annie Mumulo Are Now Working on a Live Action Cinderella Evil Stepsisters Movie for Disney

April 16, 2021
News
annie mumulo, cinderella, evil stepsisters, kristen wiig

(via Deadline)

Even though Wiig and Mumulo would have to work in the confines of both Disney and the Disney canon and that they will likely not play Cinderella’s infamous stepsisters themselves, the prospect of any of Annie Mumulo and Kristen Wiig’s next projects, following the instant classic that is Barb & Star Go To Vista Del Mar, are incredibly enticing.

The fact that they are working to develop a movie focused on those very same evil stepsisters of the legendary Cinderella has our mind racing for all the possibilities. We hold any hope that Disney will allow them to be as weird and offbeat and non sequitur as they want to be. That free-wheeling absurdist sense of humor is at what at the core of the Barb & Star Go to Vista Del Mar. Truly, if Wiig and Mumulo get to make whatever this project ends up being on their terms, it would most certainly to stand alone in Disney’s catalog, but what a grand standalone movie this would be.

Should Barb and Star Go To Vista Del Mar Be Up For Award Consideration?

February 24, 2021
News
barb and star go to vista del mar, kristen wiig

There shouldn’t be much debate about Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar already standing as one of the best comedies of 2021 (and of recent memory). Truly, it’s unabashed love of its own farce and full tilt into weirdness led valiantly by Kristen Wiig and Annie Mumulo is through and through comedy magic. Beautiful non-sequiturs, physical comedy galore, and bits on bits on bits make should very much make Barb and Star one of the most quotable, beloved comedies of this era.

So, with that in mind, shouldn’t it get some love during awards season? Historically, comedy, especially the pure kind, free of any sort of coming-of-age melodrama, isn’t treated kindly when it comes to the Oscars, Golden Globes (remember that they still loop in comedy with musicals), Spirit Awards, etc. etc. The value of awards in the grand schemes of moviemaking and comedy these days is very questionable to be sure. Yet, in our everlasting quest to tout the art form of comedy to any and all, it would be quite something for comedy to get some equity when it comes to getting artistic recognition with any sort of moving image.

Sure, it might seem weird that Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar next to traditional Oscar bait. That’s the problem though, isn’t it? The major awards for achievement in film seem narrowed to focus on a certain kind of grandiose drama and will only usually only give comedies the slightest of nods when it comes to writing. Perhaps, if there was more inclusivity not only of stories from all different backgrounds, but genre as well, especially when it comes to comedy, there might be more weight to these awards. That could be doubly true when it comes to their relevance to the general public and even in the grander context of film history.

Also, if Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar were to be in the mix for awards contention and then won, we have no doubt that Kristen Wiig and Annie Mumulo would have a pretty grand acceptance speech that would stand out from most of the sincere thanks and political grandstanding (no matter what they come up with).

Please Enjoy the Pure Ridiculousness of the Barb & Star Go To Vista Del Mar Trailer

If you’ve ever really wished for Kristen Wiig do whatever the hell she wants for an entire feature length film, that time might have come. Barb & Star Go To Vista Del Mar is written by Kristen Wiig and Annie Mumulo and also stars the duo as two Midwestern best friends embarking from a small town on a dream vacation.

Such a premise leaves a very wide canvas they get to play with and, from the looks of the trailer, it really looks as though Wiig and Mumulo really take advantage of that to the upcoming delight of us all. Honestly, we’re just not going to say anymore and let the magical silliness of Barb & Star Go To Vista Del Mar wash over you here.

Look for its release, wherever that may be, on Fri., Feb. 12th.

Watch Trailer for Alexander Payne’s Futuristic Comedy “Downsizing”

The last time that Alexander Payne’s name made the headlines, he was the mind behind a movie that was set in Nebraska, done completely in black and white, and was as grounded in reality as you could get.

Now, Payne is doing, arguably, the exact opposite in imagining a futuristic world where shrinking yourself is not only possible, but sold as a better way of living life with his latest work, Downsizing.

The result (and the subsequent questions that arise from it) appears to be undeniably fascinating and filled with plenty of funny set pieces (like an adult dramedy version of Honey, I Shrunk the Kids?).

See for yourself in the trailer here.

Downsizing hits theaters this holiday season.

Kristen Wiig and Jack Nicholson Reportedly Attached for English Language Remake of Hit German Comedy Toni Erdmann

Even though Toni Erdmann was a rare comedy that managed to be life-affirming at a time when cynicism and sarcasm are key ingredients in comedy, perhaps it being in German (though there is a decent amount of English in it for a non-English language comedy) and nearly 3 hours long made it, very unfortunately, hard for American audiences to go out and watch it.

Wiig and Nicholson are pretty good choices for Sandra Hüller and Peter Simonischek, but we’re going to cross our fingers really hard that the other key creatives adapt Toni Erdmann to English faithfully.

Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee Season 9 Kicks Off with Kristen Wiig

Jerry Seinfeld returns with his award winning comedian hang out series, Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee, now in its ninth season.

The first round is with Kristen Wiig and they do get into what drives Kristen comedically. Also, Jerry wanders around Silverlake and Los Feliz pondering the hipster-ness of it all.

From this trailer, you see that Kristen Wiig, Norm MacDonald, Lewis Black, Bob Einstein, Christoph Waltz, Cedric the Entertainer are all guests this season in Jerry Seinfeld’s ultra lavish hang-out show, Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee, now in its 9th season.

The new season starts streaming on Crackle on January 5th and new episodes will be released on Thursdays.

Do take note that 9 seasons is also the number of seasons that Seinfeld had before it concluded. We’re not sure if Jerry would stop just because of that, especially since this show is, as we said before, a really cool hang out between Seinfeld and his favorite funny people.

Will Ferrell, Kristen Wiig, Marc Platt Set Musical About Corporate Musicals at Amblin

Marc Platt is deservedly riding high off of his work in La La Land and the attachment of Will Ferrell and Kristen Wiig make this even more high profile of a project.

Beyond that, we’re actually more than intrigued about a musical about corporate sponsored and themed musicals, which is the focus of the source material, the book “Everything Is Coming Up Profits: The Golden Age Of Industrial Musicals”.

It’s high concept and meta to be sure, but this project has plenty of potential.

The trailer is evidence of Masterminds finally coming out (it had been in limbo forever because of Relativity’s bankruptcy) and let’s hope that sticks this time as this seems like a welcome break from franchise sequels and nostalgia baiting.

“Masterminds” Is Set for Sept. 30th Release While Relativity Media Is Still Working on Coming Back from Bankruptcy

(via The Hollywood Reporter)

So, at least we’ll get a chance to see Zach Galifianakis and Kristen Wiig rob an armored car.

When Relativity Media went spiraling out of control last year, the fate of the heist comedy Masterminds starring Galifianakis and Wiig was unsure and the release date went from being pushed back a few months to being postponed indefinitely.

The dust is starting to settle after Relativity filed for Chapter 11, pending some objections from specific creditors, and their slate of films are getting back on track. Specifically, Masterminds is now set for a release on Sept. 30th, which is well over a year after it was initially supposed to come out.

At the very least, if everything goes according to plan, that means we get both Baskets and Masterminds from Galifianakis this year.

This Trailer for “Zoolander 2″ By Itself Is Worth The 14 Year Wait

Zoolander came out 2001 and was so damn funny.

Then, over a decade passed before there were serious whispers of a sequel coming about.

Finally, it will have been 15 years later when the sequel comes out on Feb. 12th, 2016.

We only had to wait 14 years for the trailer, that was just posted this morning, and it is seems to pick up where the original movie left off with how hysterical it is. There’s an unbelievable turn by Benedict Cumberbatch and perhaps Justin Bieber’s most redeeming role in a movie yet, not to mention what’s done to Kristen Wiig and, well, we’ll just stop talking and let you enjoy it already.

With their success in original series, it was only a matter of time before Amazon started making movies like this one.

Desired Moments will mark Amazon’s initial foray into features and they’re definitely going for their high brow audiences that they’ve already scored with their critically acclaimed series. From a script by Griffin Creech and director Tom Kuntz, a TV station employee finds an online wish granting service and becomes enthralled by it.

We’re not sure where Wiig will come into play, but they’re aiming for Michel Gondry and Charlie Kaufman and we’re on board for that.

As far as we can tell, Kristen Wiig is going to keep her post SNL streak of striking dramedy like Welcome to Alice and The Skeleton Twins going.

Her latest role is in Sebastián Silva’s Nasty Baby following the tribulations of a gay couple played by writer/director Silva and Tunde Adebimpe trying to have a baby via surrogate and bringing one of their best female friends in for the job.

From the looks of this trailer, if you dig Transparent, you might enjoy Nasty Baby.

Look for its release on Oct. 23rd.

Ironically enough, a movie about robbery is being put on hold because the company that’s releasing it has filed for bankruptcy.

You have might caught wind that Relativity Media, the company that was set to release the highly anticipated heist comedy Masterminds, has filed Chapter 11.

As a consequence, the film won’t be coming out in mid October as originally planned. A new release date hasn’t been announced, but one is supposedly coming for 2015.

Given the strokes of bad luck that has befallen Relativity, don’t be surprised if we have to wait until 2016 to see Galifianakis’ next film.

Maybe we’ll get to hear more about Galifianakis’ Baskets at FX in the meantime? Before the Oct. release, you’ll definitely be able to see Kristen Wiig in The Spoils Before Dying on IFC.
