Paul Feig’s Powderkeg Looking to Feature “Shut In” Short Films Made in Quarantine

April 6, 2020
News

Depending on where you are in the world, you might have been locked down in your house for several weeks or even months at this point. With all of that time on your hands, especially if you’re part of the millions of people out of work, you might have gotten into baking, learning a foreign language, or even tried to make a comedic short film or sketch.

If you happened to have done the latter (or plan to do so), you’ll be happy to know that Paul Feig’s Powderkeg is looking for such short films/sketches to screen/spotlight as part of their new Shut In Short Films program. We will say that, having gotten a number sketches sent to us for potential posting here at TCB, if you are thinking about doing or sending sending up Tiger King, you will be far from alone in doing so.

Here are the details below:

“The guidelines are simple: Filmmakers grab a phone and make a comedic short inside the confines of where you are sheltering in place. Shorts should be under five minutes. Shorts will be screened by us and we will spotlight the filmmakers on our website and twitter/IG. You can email a link to your short at shutinshorts@powderkegmedia.com”

Filmmakers and storytellers! My digital company Powderkeg has launched the Shut In Film Festival. We are looking to spotlight people who are getting creative while they are sheltering in place. For more info, visit powderkegmedia.com or head to @powderkegtv! We want to hear and see your voice!‬

Handy Dandy Guide to Weekly/Daily Comedy Livestreams (While We’re All Hunkered Down))

Though it was for a terrible reason, the world of comedy has pretty much pivoted on a dime (with growing pains to be sure) into a cornucopia of live-streaming through several online platforms. Two weeks into a good majority of the major comedy hubs of LA and NYC being sheltered in home, there have already been a whole row of weekly and even daily livestreams featuring your favorite comedians and comedy folks. Best of all, you don’t have to live in LA or NYC or really anywhere to see these. Many are free or for donations and can be seen so long as your WiFi is solid. Also, that means many of the best comedians around the country will be showing up on all sorts of shows as they just have to join in on Instagram Live, Twitch, Zoom, etc.

For the time being, these livestream shows have set up shop and will be here every week or most days of the week to keep you from going entirely insane while being stuck at home. Take note that there are plenty of one-off special events that are happening as well not mentioned here. Check our listings frequently for when and where those shows will be happening.

Obviously, we’ll update this post the more that we find.

Comedy Quarantine-daily stand-up show, Monday-Friday at 7pm PST/10PM on Instagram Live @comedyquarantine, hosted by Barbara Gray and Teresa Lee, donations accepted for comedians and COVID-19 relief.

Eddie Pepitone: Live From the Bunker-live rants and guest interviews from Eddie Pepitone, Monday-Friday, 4PM PST/7PM EST on Instagram Live @eddiepep, free.

Hot Tub with Kurt and Kristen (Home Edition)-same great weekly stand-up show with Kurt Braunohler and Kristen Schaal on Mondays at 8PM PST/11PM PST at http://holdthephone.tv/, donations accepted for comedians and COVID-19 relief.

New Material Show with Maria Bamford-Maria Bamford works out 1/2 hour of new material Monday-Friday 3PM PST/6PM EST on Zoom, donate $5 or more to food bank or Venmo $1 to @maroo-bamfoo.

Paul Feig Launches Digital Content Company Powderkeg To Highlight Female, LGBTQ, and POC Voices

This new banner launched by Paul Feig and headed up by Laura Fischer will “…focus on scripted and unscripted series as well as incubator programs”.

It’s nice to see that Feig is expanding from his passion for highlighting women in comedy (just take a look at his filmography from the last several years). This move also comes on top of a doing an “inclusion rider” on his projects and promoting a diverse work environment.

Needless to say, we’re very curious to see what comes from all of this and if the company will live up to its name.

Freaks and Geeks: The Documentary Coming in 2018

Freak and Geeks, the landmark sitcom that ended up being a launching pad for much of the comedic talent you see on TV and in theaters these days, is getting a documentary with both A&E and Morgan Spurlock on board.

More and more, 1999 becomes a distant memory, and thus, a deep dive back into Freaks and Geeks will probably be a refreshing surprise for many folks who enjoy Paul Feig, Judd Apatow, Seth Rogen, Jason Segel, Martin Starr, James Franco, Busy Philipps, etc. etc.

You’ve now got time between this moment and a TBD premiere date for this doc to, at the very least, watch the series that ended unfortunately far too soon.

There’s been a lot of unfortunate hullabaloo and controversy, much of which is unwarranted, surrounding the trailers for Paul Feig’s new all-female Ghostbusters.

Let’s this very enjoyable second international trailer put all of that nonsense to rest.

For awhile now, we’ve been trying to imagine what the trailer for Paul Feig’s Ghostbusters reboot with an all female set of Ghostbusters would be like, especially since it’s a pretty great team of McCarthy, McKinnon, Wiig, and Jones.

Finally, the first official trailer is here and we don’t have to imagine anymore. It should be pretty obvious, but Melissa, Kate, Kristen, and Leslie all look great together as Ghostbusters.

In case your heartstrings haven’t been delightfully tugged in awhile, let Paul Feig and company do so with this new trailer for The Peanuts Movie. You’ll also get a bit more of what Charlie Brown will be embarrassed about this time around.

Mark your calendar for Nov. 6th for the Peanuts Movie theatrical release.

Bill Murray Will Appear in Paul Feig’s “Ghostbusters”

As there is supposedly no connection to the original films, odds are he’s going to be someone besides Venkman.

In any case, Bill Murray making an appearance in the all female Ghostbusters directed by Paul Feig will undoubtedly be a highlight, both for the fact that he’s an original Ghostbuster and he’ll probably have a cameo not unlike the one he had in Zombieland.

One can only ponder if there is hope again for a return as Venkman in another Ghostbusters movie.

Amy Schumer Developing Her Next Movie, A Mother-Daughter Comedy, With Paul Feig

May 22, 2015

This is just more evidence that 2015 is the year of Amy Schumer.

Inside Amy Schumer is off to on hot start and Trainwreck looks more and more like it will be a big R-rated summer comedy hit.

So, it just stands to reason that Schumer would be throwing more irons in the fire, which now includes a new feature project that she will star in, co-rewrite with her sister Kim Caramele, and is developing with Paul Feig, who is attached to produce.

Details on what the mother daughter comedy will entail plot wise are scarce, but we’d be surprised if it didn’t land in the category of R-rated comedies.

Ilana Glazer and Abbi Jacobson Are Developing a Feature Project With Paul Feig at Fox

While details are scarce, we have a hard time imagining why this wouldn’t be a home run.

Broad City’s Abbi Jacobson and Ilana Glazer have sold an untitled feature project to 20th Century Fox and Paul Feig is on board to help them produce it.

Neither of the three are committed to directing or starring and plot details or a premise aren’t being revealed, but that must have something good brewing.

Maybe they’ll get even crazier with Chronic Gamer Girl?

The convention that gather movie theater owners, CinemaCon, has bestowed the honor of Comedy Filmmaker of The Year on the great Paul Feig. Though Feig’s work crosses between TV and movies, he’s still a prime candidate and has plenty of high anticipated projects coming up soon including Peanuts, Other Space, Spy, and the Ghostbusters reboot.

So, let’s really hope that Paul is just joshing around and will continue his wonderful work in comedy.

Paul Feig’s Spy has got a new trailer that shows how badly Melissa McCarthy wants to do field work and how critical former Transporter Jason Statham is along every step of the way.

If Spy does well this Summer on its June 5th premiere, do not be surprised if a franchise arises from this.

To perfectly accompany the news of Wiig, McCarthy, Jones, and McKinnon set as the new Ghostbusters, director Paul Feig has tweeted out the release date of the reboot.

Currently, a Power Rangers movie is also being released on the same date. It might be a long shot that we’re calling here, but we’re going to take proton packs over zords on that weekend.

Rather than further the speculation on whether Chris Pratt will end up being a new incarnation of Indiana Jones, revel in the cast of Paul Feig’s all-female Ghostbusters reboot. Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Leslie Jones, and Kate McKinnon will strap on proton packs and take down ghoulies in what’s supposed to be a scarier take on the franchise.

Looks like Bill Murray was right on with two of the four choices.

Cavalier agents in extremely well fitting suits get to sit this round of clandestine operations out in Paul Feig’s upcoming espionage comedy Spy. Melissa McCarthy stars as an analyst turned agent for appearing to be the most unlikely person for the job of saving the world.

Jude Law, Jason Statham, Allison Janney, and more make fun cameos as well. Watch the trailer here and wonder if you could connect McCarthy shacking up with a U.S. Air Marshal in Bridesmaids with this latest role.

Spy is set for release on May 22nd.

Many movie/TV adaptations often try to adapt to the time of the their release, especially if there’s a big gap in time from when the last piece of work from the source material was published.

According to Paul Feig, this won’t be the case for the Peanuts 3D movie he’s producing, set for release a year from now. By the looks of it in some of the first images and an interview with USA Today, he’s going to keep his word.

Perhaps, this will be one thing you will have come across recently that won’t ruin your childhood.
