TCB Debriefing 4/4-4/7/24: Kyle Kinane, Jackie Kashian, Murray Hill, Legally Blonde, Babes

April 7, 2024
News
babes, don't tell, ilana glazer, jackie kashian, kyle kinane, legally blonde, michelle buteau, murray hill, stand up comedy

1. Oh, thank goodness there’s a new hour of Kyle Kinane to offer the pitch perfect solace to the high octane insanity that has been 2024. His latest hour special, Dirt Nap, is Kyle doing what Kyle does best with lengthy punchline filled stories and intricately colored observations all in service of a big comedic payoff (that, in a way, feels like a bonus since the journey in of itself is so goddamn fun). Kyle does over 8 minutes on describing Fast X here and, for our money, is more fun than the movie itself. That’s just one fraction of how much of a joy Dirt Nap is, even with being perfectly aware uncertain times we live in. Please watch and enjoy Dirt Nap on repeat here.

2. It’s kind of absurd that Jackie Kashian doesn’t have a sitcom focused around her and her dyed-in-the-woo-salesman of a dad. Kashian is and has been one of the funniest comedians working today and her bits about her dad are pretty much priceless. See for yourself here in Jackie’s Don’t Tell set.

3. Mindy Kaling’s next sitcom, Murray Hill, seems like Kaling is aiming to make her version of Friends with a logline of “…five work-obsessed twenty-somethings who strive for professional success and, if they have time, personal happiness in Manhattan’s most glamorous neighborhood, Murray Hill” (Deadline).

4. Amazon Prime has a Legally Blonde spin-off in the works (Deadline). The legacy of Elle Woods endures, but we hope that there isn’t any Kim Kardashian lawyer storyline in this project.

5. Though it would seem that Michelle Buteau/Ilana Glazer vehicle helmed by Pamela Adlon Babes isn’t about abortion, it feels like the same sort of buzz that Obvious Child got is coming up for the buddy/birth comedy. See for yourself with the first official trailer here, then look for it in theaters right after Mother’s Day on May 17th.

6. We’ll leave you with this: Please help out wonderful person/hilarious comedian Jen Saunderson with her mom’s battle against stage IV cancer at the GoFundMe here.

Pick of the Day: Hopkins & Friends (in NYC) 1/22

Sometimes, there’s just an amazing line-up for a classic stand-up show at a comedy club and tickets are still available for not a crazy price and those things together are worthy of highlighting.

Such is the case of Hopkins & Friends at The Stand this Sunday. Along with host Jess Hopkins, an incredibly choice NYC line-up of Adam Pally, Phoebe Robinson, Moses Storm, Daniel Simonsen, James Austin Johnson, Dina Hashem, Ilana Glazer, and John Hopkins (assuming that’s not someone from the prestigious medical institution?) will be taking The Stand’s Main Room stage at 8PM on Jan. 22nd and you ought to know that will be one hell of a show.

Also, tickets are only $25 (and there’s no item minimum). Go get ’em before they sell out here.

Stop What You’re Doing and Enjoy the Season 2 Trailer of Ziwe

News

For the last few years, few other comedians have ascended quite like Ziwe, writing on one of the best late night shows on the air right now, Desus & Mero, to having the hottest IG Live show during lockdown, Baited with Ziwe, to having her own groundbreaking late night variety talk show, the eponymous Ziwe.

The first season of Ziwe having the keys to her very own talk show was some of the most delectable satire in late night and this next upcoming season (streaming Fri. Apr. 29th on Showtime) is going to one-up that as you can see in this season 2 trailer here.

Ziwe will march on in her iconic mission to be unflinching in picking apart issues and celebrities (and even her own writers). This season will have Baited-ish interviews with Ilana Glazer, Chet Hanks, Nicole Byer, Hannibal Buress, Adam Pally, Charlamagne Tha God, Emily Ratajkowski, Katya Zamolodchikova, and Mia Khalifa (and the Hannibal, Ilana, and Chet ones seem like they’ll be iconic from the get go).

Truly, knowing that season 2 of Ziwe is just around the corner, Apr. 29th suddenly seems so far away and can’t come soon enough.

One of 2020’s Biggest Non-Virtual Comedy Events, Bring Back Laughs, Will Be Released via Comedy Dynamics

Back in 2020, when we’re all steeped in a different type of chaos and had no idea about when or how a vaccine would come about, our future (and by proxy, the future of comedy) was more uncertain than it has ever been in our lifetimes. Thankfully, there were enough clever and innovative folks that figured how to put comedy shows together unlike they ever were and, at that point in time, many of the biggest comedians, starved of any stage time, were up for anything.

One of the results from that mix was Bring Back Laughs, a big, socially distant comedy fundraiser, outdoors in a parking lot that boasted the likes of Roy Wood, Jr., Chris Gethard, Sam Jay, Rojo Perez, Myq Kaplan, Todd Barry, Carmen Lynch, Victor Varnado, Janeane Garofalo, Tone Bell, Nore Davis, Bonnie McFarlane, the Lucas Brothers, Hannibal Buress, Ilana Glazer, and Paula Poundstone. The Creek and the Cave, which was still in NYC at the time, partenered with Supreme Robot Pictures to throw this comedy benefit for Direct Relief that brought aid to impoverished or endangered folks around the country and the world.

“This performance is based on a series of comedy concerts Rebecca Trent was producing in a parking lot during the pandemic. The performers and the audience were so happy to get outside and benefitting a wonderful charity like Direct Relief is a cherry on top. This performance also made my wife think I’m cool.” said Executive Producer Victor Varnado.

It has been awhile since we’ve seen a pandemic era special, but we did remember seeing the pictures from this and thinking, while in LA, that we almost wished were quarantining in NYC at the time.

Thankfully, Comedy Dynamics is putting this out on all major streaming platforms, both for audio and video soon.

Pick of the Day: Ilana Glazer Presents: Alison Leiby-Oh God, A Show About Abortion (in NYC, Off Broadway) 4/25-6/4

March 17, 2022
News
alison leiby, cherry lane theatre, ilana glazer, nyc comedy, solo show

The Cherry Lane Theatre has become the go-to off-Broadway theater for stand-up comedians transitioning into solo shows on a bigger stage. Colin Quinn, Mike Birbiglia, Hasan Minhaj, and, most recently, Alex Edelman have all had great runs with their respective solo shows that had humble beginnings at various stages in and around NYC.

Now, Alison Leiby will join be the latest addition to the pantheon of comedians to play The Cherry Lane Theatre as her critically acclaimed Oh God, An Hour About Abortion that has made the rounds at Caveat, Union Hall, etc. is now going to be Ilana Glazer Presents Oh God, a Show About Abortion with veteran theater director Lila Neugebauer on board. The show itself is very likely one of the more timely solo shows out there at the moment, considering the rise in anti-abortion legislation in the U.S. over the last few years.

Leiby’s run will go from Mon. Apr. 25th-Sat. Jun. 4th @ 7PM ET with a 3PM ET Saturday matinee, except for May 5th and 30th. Also, a single Sunday performance of Oh God, a Show About Abortion will happen on May 29th @ 7PM ET.

Tickets starts at $37 and highly suggest you snag them right now at ohgodshow.com.

Ilana Glazer’s Going to Have a Big Variety Comedy Special “Comedy on Earth: NYC 2020-2021” Next Month

August 26, 2021
News
comedy central, comedy on earth, comedy special, ilana glazer

Again, comedy specials aren’t as plentiful as they once were in the before times. Maybe that’s a good thing in the sense that it’s yet another we’ll appreciate now that we don’t have it so readily available in our lives? Also, not every comedian needs to do new hour special every year or two. Thank goodness we’re breaking away from that model.

With all of that in mind, Comedy Central’s latest live comedy special will be a variety special presented by the one and only Ilana Glazer. From the looks of it, it was a year in the making and will feature sketch, stand-up, and more (from the gracious likes of Lacey Jeka and Kristen Buckels, Larry Owens, Alison Leiby, and Sydnee Washington just to name a few).

We hope that it’ll be a much needed reset from a plethora of traditional stand-up specials as well as a look into how folks even pulled off comedy in NYC from last year to this year.

Look for the premiere of what will be called Ilana Glazer Presents Comedy on Earth: NYC 2020-2021 on Fri. Sept. 10th at 11PM on Comedy Central.

Natasha Rothwell Is Getting Her Own Animated Comedy Pilot “Malltown” at Comedy Central

April 20, 2020
News
abbi jacobson, comedy central, ilana glazer, natasha rothwell

(via Deadline)

Natasha Rothwell has been quite the hysterical scene stealer for quite some time now, especially in her role as Kelli over several seasons of Insecure on HBO. With her position as a writer and producer as well on the series (in addition to having done her own Characters comedy special over at Netflix), Rothwell has definitely been ready for her own show.

Thankfully, she is getting that opportunity over at Comedy Central with an animated comedy pilot called Malltown. Rothwell is even getting Broad City creators and stars Ilana Glazer and Abbi Jacobson attached to executive produce. The show will follow Libby, voiced by Rothwell, and her experience in a mall that’s on it’s way down, effecting an allegory for America.

Of the sort of shows that can even go into production right now while the overwhelming majority of the continent is in lockdown, animated series are amongst the most feasible without having to get clever or relying on capturing Zoom meeting footage or something that’s self-shot. We won’t be surprised if a bunch of animated series get green lit in the coming months, but we’re glad to hear that a Natasha Rothwell vehicle might be one of the first ones to get a series order.

Gayme Show Trailer Give You Your First Look at One Hell of a Game Show That’s Coming to Quibi

Exquisite hosting duo Matt Rogers and Dave Mizzoni have spent years fine tuning their amazing game show extravaganza, Gayme Show. Essentially, two straight male comedians compete in challenges that test the depth of their LGBTQ knowledge to be crowned Gay as F*ck. Of the comedic game shows that we’ve seen up close, this is one of the best, most entertaining, dazzling ones we’ve ever seen.

So, not only is Gayme Show deserving to be made into a TV show, which it will be on Quibi, but it is undoubtedly one of the shows we’re most looking forward to on the mobile streaming service that’s finally arriving next month.

For this version, you ought to know that guests and judges for Gayme Show include Ilana Glazer, Rachel Bloom, Darcy Carden, Jon Gabrus, John Gemberling, Joel Kim Booster.

See and enjoy just a taste of all of this with Gayme Show’s trailer here.

OK, so the one and only Ilana Glazer from Broad City is playing Dynasty Typewriter for two nights. We feel like we don’t have to sell on this much harder than what we said above.

Tickets are $20 in advance and $25 at door for both nights, Tues., Jan 8th and Wed., Jan. 9th, both at 8PM. Best get them quick as they will very likely sell out pretty fast.

Comedy Central Renews Broad City for Fifth and Final Season and Signs Ilana Glazer & Abbi Jacobson to First Look Deal

Netflix has been pulling in the biggest names in comedy for well over a year now from networks, both broadcast and cable.

Looks like Comedy Central does not want to lose stars and creative forces Ilana Glazer and Abbi Jacobson in a similar fashion. Thusly (and smartly) have given Broad City a fifth season and the duo a first look deal with the goal of producing more of their projects.

You can look for the final season of Broad City to air in 2019, but bet on seeing Ilana and Abbi on Comedy Central well into the 2020s.

Broad City Partners with Love Honey for Special Line of Adult Toys

Yep, Broad City now has merch that is explicitly meant for adults to “fool” around with. Very few sitcoms that are on basic cable can say that.

Of course, it’s just another instance where Broad City sets themselves apart from the rest of television. Abbi Jacobson and Ilana Glazer’s empire built from their show sure is fun, sex positive one.

‘Broad City’ Will Bleep Every Mention of Donald Trump’s Name for Season 4

According to a recent USA Today interview, Ilana Glazer says that every time they mention Trump’s name in season 4 of Broad City, it’ll be bleeped just like the myriad of graphic language that is flagged by Standards and Practices or like the recurring Unnecessary Censorship segment on Kimmel or even, in a way, be regarded like the name Voldemort.

It wouldn’t be hard to imagine that every mention of Trump’s name on Broad City is probably surrounded with actual expletives as well.

For Broad City, we have no doubt that fans will watch dozens more episodes that would undoubtedly continue to be delightful.
