Pick of the Day: Colin Quinn-Small Talk (in NYC) 1/6-2/11

January 3, 2023
News
colin quinn, james fauvell, lucille lortel theatre, nyc comedy, solo show

At this point, Colin Quinn is an institution unto himself in comedy and in NYC. Even before his big shows taking on the history of NYC and the U.S. Constitution, Quinn had, for our money, his reputation crystalized from his stand-up and hosting Tough Crowd (which would be a perfect show for right about n0w).

That’s all to say that you should always go out of your way to watch his next big thing, which, for 2023 is a show all centered on the art of “small talk”. For your money, Quinn is going to relate his mastery of casual conversation and, very likely, make your life all the better for it both at the show and later on in life.

Colin Quinn: Small Talk is set for a run on the Lucille Lortel Theatre in NYC from Jan. 6th-Feb. 11th. Tickets start at $41 and you can (and should) go get them here.

Netflix Is A Joke Fest Is Back (and Even Bigger?) for 2022

December 6, 2021
News
amy poehler, Ben Schwart, colin quinn, conan o'brien needs a friend, david letterman, jane fonda, jimmy carr, john mulaney, larry david, lily tomlin, los angeles comedy, marc maron, margaret cho, mike birbiglia, mike myers, netflix is a joke, nick kroll, seth rogen, taylor tomlinson, tina fey, wanda sykes

One of the first major comedy festivals to get postponed indefinitely because of COVID-19 was Netflix’s gigantic celebration of comedy that brought out all their biggest stars and their accompanying constellations, Netflix Is a Joke Fest. It was also going to be the first big comedy festival in LA in years (since Riot LA in DTLA ended its run).

For 2020, Netflix seemingly spared no expense to make the biggest comedy festival they could in Los Angeles and it was heartbreaking to see none of that happen in 2020 and have no idea if and when it would happen again.

Well, on this side of the pandemic, Netflix Is a Joke Fest was just announced to be back on, running from Thurs. Apr. 28th-Sun. May 8th, and Netflix is making sure to make it even bigger it would appear. Their stable of venues includes LA’s biggest (which wasn’t planned for 2020) including Dodger Stadium, Staples Center (now known as Crypto.com Arena), The Forum, and The Hollywood Bowl on top of beloved LA comedy haunts, old and new, The Comedy Store, The Hollywood Improv, Dynasty Typewriter, and The Elysian.

The top billing for the line-up is also more robust than we remember. On the schedule, the streamer has David Letterman, Tina Fey/Amy Poehler, Ali Wong, Eddie Izzard, Larry David, Wanda Sykes, Nick Kroll, Seth Rogen’s Table Reads, Marc Maron, Jane Fonda/Lily Tomlin, John Mulaney, Mike Birbiglia, Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend, Colin Quinn, Mike Myers, Chris Rock, Ilana Glazer, Jimmy Carr, Taylor Tomlinson, Margaret Cho, Ben Schwartz, and Kevin Smith.

Oh yeah, there’s Dave Chappelle too as well as Aziz Ansari who are two of Netflix’s biggest gets within their talent pool, but have had the “cancellation” treatment. We have no doubt that their shows will sell out.

As they are billing it as the “biggest comedy event in history*, *probably” (SF Sketchfest does have way more programming and the Edinburgh Fringe is bigger than most festivals, period.), they’ve also filled out their line-up with plenty of folks (including many of our absolute favorites) that you shouldn’t miss if you’re putting the money down for Netflix Is a Joke Fest. That includes Todd Glass, Melissa Villaseñor, Guy Branum, Natalie Palamides doing Laid, Beth Stelling, James Adomian, Robin Tran, Mae Martin, and Sam Jay.

You can take a gander at the schedule here, then go get tickets starting this Fri. Dec. 10th at NetflixIsAJokeFest.com.

Here’s Your First Look at Colin Quinn’s Drive-In Showcase Special “Colin Quinn & Friends: A Parking Lot Comedy Show”

November 10, 2020
News

As drive-in shows were one of the first and only things that were afforded to live comedy in the pandemic, it was inevitable that there would be comedy specials produced from it. So much overhead goes into producing a drive-in show anyway that it only stands to reason that they would shoot the performance and try to do something with it.

Indeed, drive-in stand-up comedy specials are coming. Comedy Dynamics has a handful of them and then there’s Colin Quinn’s showcase of his favorite comics performing at a drive-in in Brooklyn. It’s aptly named Colin Quinn & Friends: A Parking Lot Comedy Show, perhaps highlighting how far live comedy has had to adapt in order to get some sense of normalcy (i.e. not doing stand-up on Zoom).

Today, Quinn released a trailer and gave us all the first look of Colin Quinn & Friends: A Parking Lot Comedy Show that will feature performances from Sam Jay, Marina Franklin, Dan Soder, Bonnie McFarlane, Chris DiStefano, Rich Vos, Robert Kelly, and, of course Colin Quinn himself.

If you haven’t been to a drive-in stand-up show (they are pretty expensive), you’ll get a taste of the history that has been made this year of comedians, very likely for the first time ever in history, performing to people in their cars who resort to honking and flashing their headlights to, hopefully, show appreciation for a bit.

Colin Quinn & Friends: A Parking Lot Comedy Show premieres on HBO Max this Thursday, Nov. 12th.

HBO Max Announces a New Trio of Specials from Colin Quinn, Phoebe Robinson, and Aida Rodriguez

August 21, 2020
News
aida rodriguez, colin quinn, comedy special, hbo, hbo max, phoebe robinson, stand up comedy

Hot off the heels on releasing four different stand-up specials yesterday, HBO Max has just announced three more (in addition to the back half of the Team Coco specials whose production got interrupted by lockdown).

One will be a drive-in special curated, directed, and headlined by Colin Quinn taped in Brooklyn. Quinn’s line-up has yet to be announced (but we’ll keep you in the loop)

Another one will be Phoebe Robinson’s debut special (done solo from Jessica Williams and 2 Dope Queens).

Lastly, Aida Rodriguez will have her very first hour special where she will get to put her brand of unfiltered, calls-it-like-she-sees-it comedy on its biggest stage yet.

This trio of specials is a more than solid addition to their comedy programming slate over at HBO.

We are pondering about one small thing: are there going to be those hybrid comedy specials done over at HBO and HBO will just use HBO Max for more conventional stand-up specials? We’ll just have to wait and see at this point.

Colin Quinn’s Red State Blue State Is Now Going from Off-Broadway Show to Comedy Special at CNN

Colin Quinn’s Red State Blue State Is Now Going from Off-Broadway Show to Comedy Special at CNN

Colin Quinn’s new hour has found a new home. It’s pretty much assumed that his solo shows will eventually become specials. It’s interesting that there is a move from Netflix (where his last special was) to CNN, but we’re going to guess that Colin is getting to do pretty much what he wants at either place.

Also, maybe this will stream for free on CNN.com for brief period of time as well? We’ll just have to wait and see.

With W. Kamau Bell and United Shades of America and this recent announcement of a new Colin Quinn special (specifically focused on the political divisiveness all around right now), it would seem the CNN is aiming for a niche in political comedy specifically.

Jax Media Is Making a Colin Quinn Pilot ‘Luncheonette’

Following up the great special New York Story, Colin Quinn is starring and has written a pilot Luncheonette where he plays an ex-cop coffee shop owner. Jax Media, the company behind Full Frontal with Samantha Bee and the developing of a Robin Thede show, is producing it and might just have a great 2017.

Over the last few years, Quinn has extended himself wonderfully all over the place between acting, writing, and performing solo shows, which makes the prospects for what Luncheonette might be very exciting.

If you think about it, it could be a sequel-of-sorts to both New York Story and Cop Show.

Netflix has built up its comedy branding so well, especially when it comes to comedy specials, that they now almost deal exclusively in big names.

It’s great to see Quinn having one of his solo shows get turned into a special it’ll also be fascinating to see what Watts does with the freedom of a Netflix special given that his last hour was done live in Central Park.

Colin Quinn has been expertly dissecting every single trope of every police procedural/detective TV series with Cop Show.

In fact, Quinn has done it so well with showing how overdone so many cop shows are, but pointing out their fallacies with “behind-the-scenes” footage and interviews with a mysterious European journalist, that he’s made it to a 3rd season over at L Studio.

When Gethard and company return to to Fusion this week on Wednesday March 30th, they’ll be getting a whole hour of airtime, take live phone calls, and are getting rid of Chris’ monologue.

Like we said, it’s kind of like the MNN version of TCGS.

Fusion deserves props for giving Chris Gethard and his TCGS gang the room to be the show they wanted to be as that spirit is what got TCGS on the map in the first place.

The first episode has Colin Quinn and Kool Keith lined-up and Chris is encouraging people to quit the day job that they hate.

Never one to shy away from commenting on how an interview is going in the middle of the interview, Colin Quinn has taken analyzing his televised conversations with talk show hosts to the next level.

While watch him with Meyers about trying to not be in Trainwreck, Amazon book commenters, and…

…being banned in Afghanistan would be all well and good and funny on its own, Colin added another layer to the whole thing.

Watch him do a talking point-by-talking point breakdown with Seth Meyers after the taping. We hope future guests at Late Night with Seth Meyers and elsewhere think about rating their performance along similar lines.

Seriously, Colin Quinn should be on Law & Order. It probably wouldn’t be as weird that one time Stephen Colbert was on it.

Last night, Colin Quinn took The Tonight Show stage to do stand-up and focused on living in NYC for years while Law & Order has also been shot in NYC for years and somehow not being featured in the show. If anything, Cop Show should guarantee him something, but, alas, Quinn has to settle for being one of NYC’s funniest.
