Remember Brody Stevens Always Through New Audio Doc Series “Positive Connections: A Brody Stevens Oral History”

February 20, 2023
News
brody stevens, documentary, julie seabaugh, siriusxm

It has been more than a couple of years since the tragic passing of perhaps one of the best comics’ comics there ever was (and also just a great comedian separate from the label) Brody Stevens. His presence and influence still very much can be felt and honored throughout The Comedy Store, comedy in LA, and well beyond. Just yelling the phrase “positive energy” or a rising wind-up of the word “Yes!” snaps many comedians minds back to Stevens prowling on stage to be a singular comedic force, unlike any before him.

To honor his memory, esteemed comedy journalist and co-director behind the amazing 9/11 comedy documentary, Too Soon: Comedy After 9/11, Julie Seabaugh has put together an oral history of the life and times and comedy of Steven Brody Stevens that includes candid interviews with the likes of Chelsea Handler, Jeff Ross, Howard Kremer, and more. Positive Connections shows itself as very personal, yet thorough journey through Stevens’ indelible time as a comedian, leaving an unforgettable impression on almost every comedian that ever saw him or even talked to him before or after a show.

All four episodes of this limited series are streaming today on Sirius XM’s Raw Dog Comedy, channel 99, and are also available to stream whenever you’d like on the SXM app.

The Comedy Bureau Field Report Ep. 116: Comedy Give Back (Amber J Lawson & Zoe Friedman) & Looking Out for Comedians

Though the comedians today aren’t as unhinged as those of decades past, the community of comedy is one that is still very much in need of supportive infrastructure rather than the less blind leading the more blind as it is now. Thanks to Comedy Gives Back, working comedians have some sort of a safety net as CGB is dedicated to making sure that comedians (who so often help folks get through the darkest of times), can get through their own dark times.

This week’s Comedy Bureau Field Report has two of the three founders of Comedy Gives Back, Amber J Lawson and Zoe Friedman, talk about their altruistic aims to make sure things like living expenses, health insurance, mental health, and more are covered rather than relying on a deluge of GoFundMe’s.

Pick of the Day: Brody Stevens Festival of Friendship 818 Walk (near LA) 8/20

News

While comedy misses the great Brody Stevens dearly, we still hold his unstoppable POSITIVE ENERGY in all of our hearts since his passing in 2019. Comedy Gives Back, the org that serves, “as a safety net
for comedians in need of mental health services and addiction treatment,” is a big part of honoring Brody’s memory, which is why there will be the 2nd Brody Stevens Festival of Friendship 818 Walk benefitting Comedy Gives Back on Sat. Aug. 20th.

There will be a 5K walk from 11AM to 1PM in the streets of Reseda following the debut of the “Brody Forever 818″ mural in Brody’s hometown. There will be a ceremony right after the walk around 1PM PT featuring speakers and comedians all for Brody that you”ll not want to miss.

Registration is $50, but $60 if you do it on the day of. Get more details/register here.

Los Angeles Officially Marks 8/18 as Brody Stevens Day

August 25, 2021
News
brody stevens, brody stevens day, los angeles

(via Jewish Journal)

This week, Aug. 18th or, more appropriately 8/18, was designated by the City of Los Angeles as Brody Stevens Day to honor the late comedian for what he meant to both LA and comedy itself.

Of course, one of Brody’s many many catchphrases was “818 ’til I die!” a reference to being born and raised in the Valley and its area code being 818; thus 8/18 was the day picked to honor Stevens’ memory.

The very special, undeniable positivity and energy that Brody brought to the stage was a true phenomenon, unmatched by anyone that we’ve ever seen in our tenure watching comedy at TCB. That’s part of the reason why so many comedians and die hard fans alike would always make sure to watch Brody go up and run through his catchphrases or compare mental health prescriptions with audience members or mention that he was in The Hangover or do his one-of-a-kind warm-up for TV tapings or just simply drum on a chair.

The other reason is that his positive energy was infectious and it was something that you always just wanted to be around.

Brody’s horrifically tragic passing by suicide took Brody from this mortal coil, but his spirit very, very much lives on (even in just people’s utterances of YES! in Brody’s cadence).

So, going forward from this moment, don’t forget 8/18 each and every year to pay your respects to Brody (and probably do your very own impression of him) and, every day, to ENJOY IT!

For our money, Julie Seabaugh is the preeminent comedy journalist out in the world and we’re so lucky to have her on TCB Field Report this week. Her expertise and depth of comedy knowledge are so far reaching, which came in quite handy for the upcoming documentary she co-directed, Too Soon: Comedy After 9/11. As such, we talk about the effect 9/11 had on comedy and, conversely, how comedy’s healing properties dealt with the aftermath (not unlike what’s happening right now). Also, “hot” takes on SF Sketchfest returning, Showtime’s updated comedy slate, and Brody Stevens Day.

Follow Julie on IG @julieseabaugh, get more info on Too Soon: Comedy After 9/11 (premiering on Vice on Sept. 8th) at toosoondoc.com and get a Brody Stevens pin from Rockin Pins here.

Pick of the Day: Enjoy It! LIVE: A Celebration of the Life and Comedy of Steven Brody Stevens 5/22

May 5, 2021
News
brody stevens, rushtix, tribute

Just over two years ago, the world lost a fiercely burning light of positivity, a, as Zach Galifianakis would lovingly describe, jock who does performance art, and one of the most original comedians that ever was.

Brody tragically passed away by his own hand in 2019, but his #positivepush spirit very much lives on in the lives of comedians and fans alike. That’s why there’s a bench in dedication to Brody in the Valley (as Brody would be 818 even after he died) and there’s a special tribute to him on his birthday, May 22nd, on RushTix.

YOUUUUUU GOT IT! Enjoy It! LIVE will celebrate Brody’s comedy and life as well as feature stand-up from his closest friends. It’ll also double as fundraiser for Comedy Gives Back, an org dedicated to supporting comedians in need, especially when it comes to mental and emotional health.

This special evening of Enjoy It! LIVE is set to go live on Sat. May 22nd at 6PM PT/9PM ET. Tickets are $10-$30 and you really ought to snag ’em here.

The verve of one Brody Stevens, who we unfortunately lost this year, will always live on in the millions of people that got to witness him, his spirit, his comedy, and all of his plethora of catchphrases.

Any opportunity to pay tribute and remember Brody should always be taken and thusly, you should find your way to this special event An Evening to Celebrate the Comedy of Steven Brody Stevens that honors Brody’s memory, premieres a YouTube channel for Brody (Yes! You got it!), and raise funds for the charitable organization Comedy Gives Back that seeks to aid comedians who are in dire straits with their mental or physical health and can’t afford help.

So, please go get your tickets for An Evening to Celebrate the Comedy of Steven Brody Stevens here.

The tragic loss of the brilliant Brody Stevens is still reverberating throughout comedy and will for quite some time. His passing makes the issue of mental health and its crucial importance in our lives.

With that in mind, Largo is holding a benefit in Brody’s memory for NAMI (National Association on Mental Illness) that will feature Sarah Silverman, Zach Galifianakis, and more next Wednesday, May 22nd 8:30PM.

Tickets are $55.25 right now. Go get them here.

Here Is Brody Stevens’ Set on Conan

Here Is Brody Stevens’ Set on Conan

Brody Stevens should have gotten to do a lot more things for how purely funny he is. In the last several days, you might have scoured the Internet to watch Brody do his thing, which is what we all should have been doing more of when he was around, and saw something like his set on The Meltdown with Jonah and Kumail.

For us, we immediately wanted to rewatch and share his set from 2012 on Conan.

It’s special for a few reasons:

1) It is one of his first big time stand-up performances on TV
2) It is one of his first late night spots
3) Most importantly, it’s one of the first times that a national audience got to see Brody be Brody, i.e. the in-the-moment-performance-art-jock that people knew and loved (and thankfully JP, Conan, and Team Coco let that happen in this set).

We weren’t able to find the set outside of the context of Enjoy It!, but we asked the good folks at Team Coco about it and they now have the set for you to watch and enjoy right here.

Oh, you might notice that he indeed jokes about being cut out of Judd Apatow’s Funny People in this set. Judd Apatow found the footage of Brody in Funny People and actually brought everything full circle by showing it on Conan this week.

As you probably know by now, the beloved Brody Stevens passed away. It has affected so many people as Brody was a part of so many different circles, scenes, groups, etc. and had such strong connection with all of them.

In light of his struggles with mental health, there will be a festival at The Comedy Store in Brody’s honor that will benefit Brody’s family and mental health awareness foundations.

This first Enjoy It! Brody Stevens’ Festival of Friendship: A Night of a Thousand Loving Friends of Brody Stevens will take place next Tuesday, March 5th at The Comedy Store, presented by Sam Tripoli, Sarah Mello, and JC Coccoli.

From the looks of it, this will be a recurring thing and we can’t think of a better way to remember Brody for years and years to come.

Tickets for the main room shows are now available here and here, respectively.

R.I.P. Brody Stevens, 1970-2019

Uncategorized
brody stevens, rip, steven brody stevens

As a comedian, Brody was truly fearless on stage in a way that so few in comedy get to. His energy and presence were undeniable and long time friend Zach Galifianakis even noted that he thought of Brody fondly as a “jock doing performance art”.

Just a few hours ago, TMZ broke news that beloved comedian Brody Stevens was found dead by hanging in an apparent suicide.

For our money, he was the best crowd warm-up, he did indeed have a scene stealing part in the Hangover, and his connection with any crowd was simply magical. We wouldn’t be surprised if we don’t see anything like Brody ever again.

Stevens was very open about his mental health issues, joking about it every night on stage. Still, it would seem, there was something else that lead him to his end today. (FYI, the National Suicide Prevention Hotline can be reached at 1-800-273-8255 and they’re available 24 hours a day if you need someone talk to)

Brody was a great comedian and his passing sadly came too early. Please remember him for his great works including his comedy special at The Comedy Store, his Comedy Central series Enjoy It!, and one of our old favorites, The Brody Stevens Interview Challenge.

Also, just Google and YouTube Brody Stevens and enjoy working “YES! You got it!” into your daily vernacular in his honor.

Besides it being Neil Hamburger and the fact that it’s a very, very, very, very stacked line-up (perhaps almost worthy of a gala?), next Sunday will mark 11 years of Neil’s residency (the longest solo residency in the comedy scene that we can think of) at The Satellite in Silverlake.
