If you’re looking for something way in the future to look forward as a way to potentially have something to get you through the end of the year all the way into 2021 when maybe, possibly, hopefully there will be a vaccine that we all can get for COVID-19, there will be a magnificent collection of essays, poetry, toons, short stories, art, and so much more for well over 100 of the best women in comedy (from all corners including stand-up, writing, sketch, acting, podcasting, musical comedy, and more) in Notes from the Bathroom Line: Humor, Art, and Low-grade Panic from 150 of the Funniest Women in Comedy.

Amy Solomon (producer on Silicon Valley, Barry) curated the incredibly impressive literary gathering for this book and we really can’t wait for Mar. 16th, 2021 when Notes from the Bathroom Line is set for release.

Thus far, slated to contribute are:

Lolly Adefope, Maria Bamford, Aisling Bea, Lake Bell, Rachel Bloom, Rhea Butcher, Nicole Byer, D’Arcy Carden, Aya Cash, Karen Chee, Margaret Cho, Mary H.K. Choi, Amanda Crew, Rachel Dratch, Beanie Feldstein, Jo Firestone, Briga Heelan, Samantha Irby, Emily V. More contributors will be added down the line for a book that’s so much more promising than a lot of what 2020 has given us.

By the way, you can pre-order Notes from the Bathroom Line here.

Pick of the Day: Nicole Byer + Sasheer Zamata: #VERYFAT #VERYBRAVE 6/4

June 1, 2020
News
book release, nicole byer, sasheer zamata

It’s undeniable that one of the funniest comedians working today is Nicole Byer. Between her stand-up, her TV shows, her podcast empire, and more, Byer is truly fearless in her comedy in a way that’s both hysterical, raw, and, honestly, beautiful.

Her upcoming memoir,#VERYFAT #VERYBRAVE, will be her latest work that you should get into. The book “…unpacks the bizarre notion that it takes courage to be a fat woman,” through her own experiences, especially when it comes to wearing a bikini.

She’s doing a virtual launch of #VERYFAT #VERYBRAVE on Zoom with her Best Friends co-host Sasheer Zamata that’ll include discussion and a Q&A this Thurs. Jun. 4th at 4PM PT.

Tickets are $24.98 and include a purchase of the book. Go get ’em here.

You Can (and Should) Binge All of “Robbie”

May 12, 2020
News
anthony king, beau bridges, comedy central, mary holland, robbie, rory scovel, sasheer zamata, scott moran, stu jenkins

In the comedic tradition of seeing idiots not getting what they want, Rory Scovel revels in his starring role in Robbie. Akin to It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, the schemes of Scovel’s Robbie seem to be doomed from the start and the inevitable approach of his consequential failure is pretty damn ridiculous and fun. Also, Scovel and company (Stu Jenkins, Scott Moran, and Anthony King) have really showcased how fun it can be to watch someone who deserves to lose do so at every turn.

In fact, Robbie has the uncanny ability to screw things up just when they couldn’t be screwed up any further with Sasheer Zamata, who plays his co-parent Ava, and especially Beau Bridges who plays his dad, Robbie Sr./Coach. If you’ve ever seen Scovel do stand-up and go into one of his myriad of wild characters, we picture Robbie as a glorious, extended version of that.

We’d like to note that the hilariously offbeat-ness of the dialogue and timing shine here (accented perfectly by the jazzy, single note theme song). Several scenes get heightened in their absurdity as a result, especially whenever Robbie is arguing with his girlfriend Janie (Mary Holland) who always seems to be having a slightly different conversation than the one being actually had.

Robbie dropped online last weekend in its entirety and Comedy Central was even nice enough to let the whole series stream on YouTube here allowing you to binge all 8 episodes in one fell swoop.

In case these times haven’t made a clear, the time for f*ckboys is over. Mary Beth Barone is bringing her show Drag His Ass: A F*ckboy Treatment Program across the country once more to further this sentiment via sharing damning stories, observations, and more on f*ckboys.

Barone has a great line-up taking f*ckboys to task, as you can see above, for this edition at Dynasty Typewriter this Thursday. It really ought to be a satisfying, hilarious evening that’s probably long overdue for those deserving f*ckboys

Picture This! has been, far and away, the leader and live comedy being live animated in real time for seven years. It’s a one-of-a-kind thing that we’re so glad to see be born in LA and then tour the globe.

Come celebrate the 7th anniversary of comedians’ jokes being illustrated on a screen behind them next month with this ridiculously good line-up. Tickets can be snagged here (do so quick because they’ll probably sell out).

Looks like the Inner Sanctum at UCB Sunset (which we’d like to note can feel more intimate than the main stage next door at times) is having more stacked shows these days.

Presented by UCB co-founder Matt Walsh, Dodo’s Retirement Party will be a variety show as well as a tribute to “Dolores (Dodo) Portencasso” as she retires from “Corn Products”. Oh yeah, the line-up just happens to be, as we mentioned before, pretty damn stacked (see flyer above).

Tickets for this show next week are $12 and you can (and should) get them here.

Sasheer Zamata Joins ‘Saturday Night Live’ As New Cast Member

After the wave of criticism of the lack of diversity at SNL, then a sketch making fun of said criticism last year, Lorne Michaels “secretly” auditioned  a group of black female comedians to be cast members.

Yesterday, it was announced that, from that group, Sasheer Zamata will be the newest cast member at Saturday Night Live. We hope that she kills it in her first episode.
