Pick of the Day: 6th Annual High & Mighty Thanksgiving Eve Power Hour 11/25

November 23, 2020
News

The annual tradition of Jon Gabrus doing a power hour live on stage with friends is one of the few things that we look forward to Thanksgiving week. Normally, we’d get to see the madness take place on stage and secrets and wild things run amok during the whole time.

As a stage show can’t happen in a proper venue, Gabrus will be doing this year’s High & Mighty Thanksgiving Eve Power Hour virtually and we have no doubt they’ll revel in the chaos of taking a shot of beer every minute for an hour just as much as they have in years past. Joining Gabrus for this Sixth Annual (and first virtual) Power Hour will be Mano Agapion (Drag Her!), Nicole Byer (Why Won’t You Date Me?), Mike Mitchell (Doughboys), Betsy Sodaro (A Funny Feeling), and Nick Wiger (Doughboys).

Also, this year’s show will be donating proceeds to a great org, The Okra Project.

High & Mighty Thanksgiving Eve Power Hour is set for Wed. Nov. 25th at 6PM PT/9PM ET (you’ll be able to watch the live-stream up until Sun. 11/29 at midnight). Tickets are $10 and you can and very much should get them here.

Pick of the Day: Brighter Comedy (BIG SUNDAY Benefit)

If you can believe it (and we hope that you can because of how much we’ve got listed at our site), there is still plenty of comedy going on and lots of shows are raising money for great causes that are so deserving of your support.

One such event is happening this weekend called Brighter! It’ll be an atypical talk show that features Mickey and Robin Bright (Dannah Phirman, Seth Morris) who are divorcing while in quarantine and getting in touch with the likes of Maria Bamford, Nick Kroll, Jason Mantzoukas, Kate Micucci, Phil LaMarr, Carl Tart, Betsy Sodaro and more playing their neighbors in their “artist commune apartment building” to check-in/get advice to cheer up, especially given their situation. For those missing the sort of fare you’d get to see at UCB in the before times, this might be what you’re looking for.

The show will be in support of BIG SUNDAY, a Los Angeles-based non-profit, organizing free meal delivery for doctors, nurses and staffers who work in the ER in LA. Anyone can watch the show, but they will be taking donations.

Brighter! will be streaming live this Saturday Apr. 11th at 6PM PT at www.brightercomedy.com.

Pop TV Orders “Mother Mary” Pilot Starring Betsy Sodaro as a Modern Day ‘Mother Mary’

Pop TV Orders “Mother Mary” Pilot Starring Betsy Sodaro as a Modern Day ‘Mother Mary’

More props should be given to Pop TV for taking a chance on Schitt’s Creek and, as such, more credence should be paid to whatever is on their slate going forward.

For our money, a sitcom that stars the purely funny Betsy Sodaro (the mere sound of her voice and cadence has us giggling) as a millennial bestowed with “the Immaculate Conception” in a project developed by a stacked team of Sodaro, Rachel Bloom, Dan Gregor, and Casey Feigh could land anywhere and we’d be pretty excited for it.

So, Mother Mary with Sodaro landing a pilot order at Pop TV is pretty damn intriguing to us. Perhaps, it’s the next thing that Pop TV will focus on after Schitt’s Creek closes out as a series later this year.

We would hope by now that you have come to watch, enjoy, and love Lindsay Ames’ My Diary show as we have.

Lindsay is doing a very special edition of her show this month that ups the ante of performers sharing personal diaries entries by getting them “baked” before they take the stage. We can’t speak for the line-up reading their most personal secrets from the younger days while high, but this ought to be a great time for any and all in attendance.

Tickets are $10 in advance and $15 at the door. Go get them here.

UCB has gathered some of their best, that just happen to be a couple of some sort (married, dating, team partners, etc.), for a special Valentine’s Day show at UCB Sunset. If you’re not into the concept of Valentine’s because you see it as a corporate cash-in, take note that all proceeds from this show will go to Planned Parenthood.

So, you can (and should) get your tickets for UCB’s Planned Parenthood Valentine’s Day Bonanza here.

Watch “The Earliest Show” Where Ben Schwartz Goes Through the Five Stages of Grief as a Morning Talk Show Co-Host Next to a Very Chipper Lauren Lapkus

Watching Ben Schwartz go through denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance in the setting of a blissfully aloof morning show with the uber-cheerful Lauren Lapkus is a performance worthy of some awards attention.

Branded content (Cap’n Crunch is prominently featured) doesn’t get much more out there and, at the same time, better than this.

The experimental variety show known as Cool Sh*t/Weird Sh*t is doing a ‘Sadie Hawkins’ show where they “women to ask men/women to do bits together”. It could be like the Sadie Hawkins dance that you hopefully went to in high school, provided that it was an unpredictable, but grand old night.

In any case, you can (and should) get your tickets for $5 here.

UCB’s “Mother Mary” Continues to Give Great, Modern Twist on Birth of Christ Story

The very progressive, modern take on the birth of Christ in Casey Feigh and Dan Gregor’s Mother Mary web series continues to be a pretty great formula, especially with Betsy Sodaro starring.

See for yourself in the two latest episodes where they look for Mary’s “Joseph” and actually go through with the birth of Christ.

UCB Digital’s latest and greatest web series Mother Mary comes from Casey Feigh and Dan Gregor and puts a very 21st century, more feminist twist on the story of the birth of Christ.

Betsy Sodaro, as you’ll notice, is pretty fantastic as a “give-no-f*cks” type of Mary.

The gathering of Barry Rothbart, Betsy Sodaro, Brian Huskey, Cornell Reid, Nick Rutherford, and Chris Reinacher under one roof makes for batshit crazy house. It also makes for a very funny web series that was just released at CC:Studios called 300 Sunnyside.

Watch episodes one, two, and three now and be thankful that you get to watch the insanity at their house from the comfort of YouTube rather than actual live it.

UCB’s Pantsuit gives us the ideal situation for whenever someone drops a pun and then follows it with “No pun intended.”

And by ideal situation, we mean throwing accusations around aggressively and being fraught with tension. Watch exactly what we mean here.
