Pick of the Day: Brent Weinbach: Popular Culture Taping (in LA) 6/29

June 17, 2024
News
brent weinbach, stand up comedy, taping, ucb

Brent Weinbach has proven time and time again that he’s at the forefront of the art of comedy and he’s about to do so again at the end of this month.

The comedian who conjured up comedic brilliance by impersonating an audience member crying or coming up with Gangster Party Line or perfecting what very much seems like conducting a comedy laboratory on stage, but it all go exactly according to plan is recording his very next special. Weinbach will be taping Popular Culture at UCB Franklin on Saturday, June 29th at 7PM and 9:30PM. Tickets for the early show are already sold out, but you can still snag some late show tickets if you act fast and have $15 on you (which, for this, you should).

Go get ’em here.

Pick of the Day: NYE Mega Comedy Show 2022 (Live-stream) 12/31

December 23, 2021
News
andrew michaan, atsuko okatsuka, brent weinbach, Caleb Hearon, maria bamford, moshe kasher, natasha leggero, nye, virtual comedy

Welp, the normal big Bay Area NYE comedy bash put on by Natasha Leggero and Moshe Kasher won’t happen again in person because of Omicron, but, at the very least, it’ll still happen. Natasha and Moshe are opting to do it virtually and have yet another amazing line-up of some of the best comedians in the entire country.

You’ll actually, probably to ring in 2022 with more comedy fans than you would have gotten to if you were to see this in person.

This edition of NYE Mega Comedy Show will have:

Maria Bamford (Lady Dynamite, Big Mouth)
Atsuko Okatsuka (TheLate Late Show)
Caleb Hearon(Variety’s Comics to Watch)
Natasha Leggero (Another Period, Endless Honeymoon Podcast)
Moshe Kasher (Netflix, Endless Honeymoon Podcast)
Andrew Michaan (Podcast But Outside, I Think You Should Leave)
Brent Weinbach (Gangster Party Line, Comedy Central)
You can get access to the livestream on YouTube for $15 and then be part of the VIP Zoom audience for $25, all done through Nowhere Comedy. The festivities begin at 8:30PM PT/11:30PM ET on Dec. 31st and they’ll do a countdown from CST. Get your tickets at tinyurl.com/2022megashow.

Pick of the Day: Brent Weinbach Dougg Pound Night (in LA) 9/25

September 23, 2021
News
brent weinbach, cinelounge, douggpound

The works of Brent Weinbach and Douggpound are some of the most delightfully absurd videos that have been put out there in the world. It’s a rare so opportunity to have both of them together to not only screen a bunch of their stuff, but have them give what would essentially be DVD commentary, but done live and in-person.

That’s exactly what’s happening this Saturday, Sept. 25th at Cinelounge Outdoors in Hollywood. Both Brent and Douggpound will be doing a very special retrospective on their exclusive collaborations over the years and doing a “talk back”, which, in of itself, might be worth checking out as that truly could be any thing that strikes the fancy of Brent and Douggpound.

Doug and Brent Forever: Brent Weinbach and Douggpound Night is set for 9/25 w/doors at 7:30PM PT. Tickets are $14.92 and you can (and very much should) go get them here.

Pick of the Day: Tomorrow! with Ron Lynch 16th Anniversary Jam! (IG Live) 7/24

July 23, 2021
News
anniversary, brendon small, brent weinbach, chris walsh, craig anton, dana gould, davey johnson, laura kightlinger, michael mortilla, michael serwich, ron lynch, tomorrow show, virtual comedy

For 16 years, Tomorrow! has been the thing to do on Saturday night at midnight in LA. For so many years, longer than we’ve been doing or covering comedy, Ron Lynch has faithfully brought the perfect mix of absurdity, silliness, beauty, and honesty that’s worth keeping the night going that late.

Of course, for the last year, they haven’t been able to do that in a proper venue and Lynch company have taken to Instagram Live to keep the Tomorrow! flame going and indeed they have kept the show alive and kicking for all these months since whenever March 2020 was (that was a decade ago, right?).

To mark their 16 year anniversary, Ron will be bringing back the original trio, himself, Craig Anton, and Brendon Small, that started off this midnight institution as well as such luminary comedians as Dana Gould, Laura Kightlinger, and Brent Weinbach. Very likely, they’ll have more than just that to celebrate the occasion (in addition to the “Core Four” and Michael Mortilla).

These days, it ought to be something really special if you’re going to tune into an IG Live show, but the 16 Year Anniversary of Tomorrow! with Ron Lynch more than fits that bill. Tune in at Sat. Jul. 24th at 11PM PT/2AM ET on IG Live @ronlynch1 and support the show on Venmo @tomorrowshow.

Best of all, you won’t have to worry about the Delta variant!

Pick of the Day: Bathtub Comedy Shower Hour: Asian American Advocacy Fund 3/26

March 22, 2021
News
alyssa sabo, asian american advocacy fund, brent weinbach, cam gavinski, jamie loftus, jt tomlinson, todd glass

As you hopefully know, the AAPI community in America is dire need of having their voices heard and stopping discrimination and violence against them. Thus, we’re shouting out The Bathtub Comedy Shower Hour, the delightful monthly comedy live-stream on Zoom, as they are raising money for the Asian American Advocacy Fund, an org dedicated to AAPI in Georgia.

For this very special show, they have an absolutely terrific line-up that includes:

Todd Glass
Jamie Loftus
Brent Weinbach
Alyssa Sabo
JT Tomlinson!
& host Cam Gavinski

This particular edition of The Bathtub Comedy Shower Hour is set to stream this week on Fri. Mar. 26th at 8PM PT/11PM ET. You can get tickets through donations to the Asian American Advocacy Fund (Donations collected through Venmo: @Cameron-Gavinski, $8 minimum donation for ticket).

Pick of the Day: NYE Comedy Mega Show 2021

December 28, 2020
News
andrew michaan, brent weinbach, fred armisen, moshe kasher, natasha leggero, reggie watts

Though it has to be virtual, NYE’s comedy shows are still very much happening and they’re streaming from all around the globe (which should make it so much easier to tune into whatever your favorite(s) might be).

We’d like to start off by highlighting one of this particular NYE’s Comedy Mega Show that’ll ring in the New Year for the East Coast and the Midwest as well as feature a grand line-up of Reggie Watts, Natasha Leggero, Moshe Kasher, Fred Armisen, Brent Weinbach, and Andrew Michaan. Whether that would be in person or not, that’s pretty stellar for a New Year’s Eve comedy line-up.

Luckily, you can stream it safely from home and remember that time kind of still functions.

NYE’s Comedy Mega Show starts on Dec. 31st 8:30PM PT/11:30PM ET and tickets are $15-$25. Go get them here.

This show had a far too short run at the Improv. Thankfully, this improvised powerpoint show is coming back once more at Dynasty Typewriter at Hayworth Theater next week on Wed., June 27th at 8PM.

Zed Cutsinger and Andrew Michaan’s PowerPointless will also have a line-up including Natasha Leggero, Moshe Kasher, Nick Thune, Brent Weinbach, and David Dineen-Porter that’s more than up to the task of BS-ing their way through an actual PowerPoint presentation that they’ve never seen before.

From the minds of Andrew Michaan and Zed Cutsinger comes a full length pilot for Ghost Family, a show we wish would get picked up to series somewhere (though some NSFW content in it probably means it’s better suited for certain networks or streaming services than others).

In the way Childrens Hospital took on medical procedurals, Ghost Family goes to the nth degree and beyond to send up family sitcoms and we loved ridiculous minute of it.

Watch and enjoy it here (and maybe spread the word enough so it does become an actual TV show somewhere).

Two years later, the video has a sort of website spin-off GangsterPartyLine.com featuring the voicemails that people would leave when calling the real number from the video.

Every once in awhile, Brent and friends like the brilliant Moshe Kasher will actually pick up and, you know, talk some shit.

Get into the doc here and give Gangster Party Line another watch or two because it definitely still holds up.

Watch Trailer’s for Lance Bangs’ “Flophouse” Where He Explores the Comedy Underground

Since time immemorial, comedians have often lived together in what many would considered cramped, messy, and raucous living situations. Comedians, for the most part, think it’s just fine.

In this latest golden era of comedy, there’s a whole new excitement brewing in the underground and, with the aid of the Internet, it’s not quite as underground (i.e. no one has ever heard of it) as it used to be.

Lance Bangs explores this subculture that’s bridging its way to the big time, though, on its own terms, in his Viceland series Flophouse. Specifically, he goes through these comedian ‘flophouses’ and then sees them all put on a live show on a rooftop, in a back yard, in a garage, etc.

Here’s a trailer for Flophouse in case you’re curious as to what this all looks like and haven’t gotten the luck to go to a house comedy show.

By the way, featured in the trailer are:
Kate Willett, Clare O’Kane, Solomon Georgio, Amy Miller, Brent Weinbach, Brandon Wardell, Eric Dadourian, Dave Stone, Maria Bamford, James Adomian, Sean Patton, James Austin Johnson, David Gborie, Steve Agee, and much more.

Look for Flophouse to come to Vice’s new Viceland on Feb. 29th.
