The Comedy Bureau Field Report Ep. 255: Laser Webber & Defying with Queer Joy

April 23, 2025
News, The Comedy Bureau Field Report
festival, gnc, laser webber, trans

These days, the notion of representation mattering is more crucial than it has been in a long time, especially when it comes to trans/gender non-conforming/non-binary folks. Thank goodness for the likes of people such as Laser Webber, a do-it-all performer/producer in all worlds in and around comedy, music, and theater to co-found The Joy Who Lived, a festival celebrating trans and gnc comedy/performance/art (that’s specifically counter-programming a Harry Potter play at the Pantages). We talk about the importance of communing and having joy whilst in survival mode in 2025.

Follow Laser @lasertheboy & The Joy Who Lived: trans/gnc comedy & performance festival @joywholived (that still has a handful of shows left, FYI)

Pick of the Day: Buster Keaton Festival (near LA) 1/6

December 28, 2023
News
buster keaton, festival, old town music hall, silent film

The Marx Brothers always get plenty of play during the turn of the year, but, if you’re in the mode for black and white film comedy that still stands the test of time, you best not forget about comedy/filmmaking legend and pioneer Buster Keaton. His daring stunts made for some of the most enduring images of comedy at the outset of moving pictures and are still astounding by today’s standards.

Fortunately, for Angelenos, an entire Buster Keaton Festival has been created that will celebrate Keaton’s memory at El Segundo’s Old Town Music Hall. Not only will you get to joyfully run through Buster’s filmography, but it will be live accompanies by Old Town Music Hall’s beautiful Mighty Wurlitzer Theatre Pipe Organ, played by Mark Herman.

This very special silent film festival is slated for Sat. Jan. 6th at 2:30PM will only run you $20. Please go get tix here.

What is BugCon? For starters, it’s definitely not an Entomology convention.

It is, however, named in honor of Bug Mane who first appeared to us all on the Doughboys podcast (though it is to be noted that BugCon is not a Doughboys event despite both Doughboys hosts Nick Wiger and Mike Mitchell being slated to appear for multiple events).

As far as we can tell, this weekend will actually be part podcast/streaming festival, part performance art exhibition, part art installation, and part fun, screen-filled journey through post-modernity.

Such events/panels/happenings at BugCon will include:
-Bradley Cooper’s A Star Is Born Takes Places in an Alternate Reality Where 9/11 Never Happened
-Nick Wiger Drives a Train
-The BugTV panel with Bugmane
-Jack AM
-HOW TO WRITE A BOOK A MAKE AT LEAST $600
-American Arts and Culture Review Podcast
-a whole lot more

Also, you’ll get an exclusive “BugCon 2019 Fan Safety Vest” and “BugVision” glasses if you attend. Perhaps, you’ll need both items to handle the whole experience?

So, you can (and should) get an all access pass for BugCon 2019 here. Full schedule and line-up is available on mobile devices at http://bugcon.net.
