Pick of the Day: Enjoy It! LIVE: A Celebration of the Life and Comedy of Steven Brody Stevens 5/22

May 5, 2021
News
brody stevens, rushtix, tribute

Just over two years ago, the world lost a fiercely burning light of positivity, a, as Zach Galifianakis would lovingly describe, jock who does performance art, and one of the most original comedians that ever was.

Brody tragically passed away by his own hand in 2019, but his #positivepush spirit very much lives on in the lives of comedians and fans alike. That’s why there’s a bench in dedication to Brody in the Valley (as Brody would be 818 even after he died) and there’s a special tribute to him on his birthday, May 22nd, on RushTix.

YOUUUUUU GOT IT! Enjoy It! LIVE will celebrate Brody’s comedy and life as well as feature stand-up from his closest friends. It’ll also double as fundraiser for Comedy Gives Back, an org dedicated to supporting comedians in need, especially when it comes to mental and emotional health.

This special evening of Enjoy It! LIVE is set to go live on Sat. May 22nd at 6PM PT/9PM ET. Tickets are $10-$30 and you really ought to snag ’em here.

Every year for 8 years, the brilliant writer/actor/raconteur/comedian Justin Sayre puts up his fantastic, heartfelt, wild tribute to the legendary Judy Garland, A Night of a Thousand Judys, in support of LGBTQ+ unhoused youth through the Ali Forney Center.

Natalie Douglas (12x MAC Winner)
Nathan Lee Graham (Zoolander, “LA to Vegas”)
Eva Noblezada (Hadestown)
Adam Pascal (Rent)

T. Oliver Reid (Hadestown)

Spencer Day (#1 Billboard artist)
Bright Light Bright Light (Elton John, Cher)

and more!

Whether you’re deeply in love with Judy Garland or not (or even just got into her recently because of Renée Zellweger’s recent performance of Judy in Judy), you should cut out time from your binging watching of other things to tune into this Judy Garland tribute extravaganza.

A Night of a Thousand Judys is set for Tues. July 14th at 5PM PT/8PM ET. You can get more details, donate, and then watch it here.

Jimmy Kimmel Live Was All in Honor of Fred Willard Last Night

The passing of Fred Willard happened only a few days ago and his absence is still reverberating through the millions and millions of people he brought joy and laughter to.

Certainly, Jimmy Kimmel felt the loss deeply as Willard was a dear friend and a very, very frequent bit player on Jimmy Kimmel Live. So, last night, Kimmel dedicated the entire episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live to the memory of comedy legend Fred Willard.  Kimmel himself personally honored him by recounting some of his favorite memories in working with Fred as well as running down a plethora of characters that he has played for Jimmy over the years.

Watch, reminisce, enjoy (and maybe get a little teary eyed) here.

At this point, it takes quite a bit to raise our eyebrows when it comes to comedy.

That being said, this show Cheers The Show: The Show, a sketch showcase of several different versions of the opening to Cheers by very talented sketch writers and performers (including Genetra Tull, Elizabeth Schantz, John O’Toole Katy Fullan, Jackie Durruthy, Lee Barats, Dan Torson, Lauren Knutti, Ryan Kelly, Coil Danielle, Lorae Byas, Caitlin Linden, and producer/director/co-writer Brian Rodriguez-McGovern) is one of those shows. Some of the cold-opens nail the tone and vibe of Cheers and some are hilariously off the deep end.

In any case, you should catch the latest edition of this show next week at UCB Sunset (it’s a test show that could go on to be a recurring thing at UCB FYI). Get tickets here.

Jimmy Kimmel Gave One of the Most Heartfelt Tributes on TV to the Late Don Rickles

After big untimely events happen, late night hosts usually aim for composure during the taping of their show.

However, Don Rickles and Jimmy Kimmel became close friends over the last decade and, after the news of Don’s passing yesterday, Jimmy dedicated a long segment to his dearly departed friend and didn’t hold back his emotions.

From this, you can see the effect Don had on people and the joy that he brought to people’s lives including the unflappable prankster, late night talk show host Jimmy Kimmel.

HBO To Air Carrie Fisher’s Special ‘Wishful Drinking’ This Week in Tribute

image

A few years ago, HBO made a special out of Carrie Fisher’s stage show Wishful Drinking, which features Fisher’s wild stories told unapologetically and hilariously by her.

On, Sunday, January 1st at 9PM, will air the special once more in tribute to the late, legendary actress.

As you can see from Fisher roasting George Lucas at an AFI Award event, you might want to watch.

In Heartfelt Tribute to Garry Shandling, Conan O’Brien Recounts Garry Helping Him After Losing The Tonight Show

In a very personal tribute in memory of the recently passed away Garry Shandling, Conan O’Brien pointed out why Garry was amazing outside of just being one of the comedy greats.

Shandling not only had done panel with Conan over the years, but Garry also offered counsel and emotional support to O’Brien in the days following the unfortunate end of hosting The Tonight Show. Conan told the story in detail on last night’s episode of his show.

Undoubtedly, this is only one in many stories to come of why Shandling was, is, and will be revered in the world of comedy and beyond.

Comedy Central Sending Off Jon Stewart with “Your Month of Zen”, a Daily Show Streaming Marathon

As one of the most prominent faces and voices of Comedy Central, it’s only fitting that they send Jon Stewart out with a bang.

While it’s invigorating to see Stewart rally for his last few weeks as Donald Trump has announced his presidential candidacy in addition to the fun tributes that have popped up here and there, Comedy Central is putting together a month long goodbye, “Your Month of Zen” if you will, for their star Jon Stewart.

Starting 9AM PST on Fri. Jun. 26th, they’re going to stream all of the 2000+ episodes of The Daily Show with Jon Stewart (going all the way back to Jan. 1999) right here. You can also watch the stream on the Comedy Central App.

On Aug. 2nd, fan favorite clips will be put together in an one hour special retrospective called “News Your Own Adventure” hosted by The Daily Show’s current correspondents. We hope this means that there is a whole segment on Stewart yelling about pizza.

This will all lead up to Jon’s final day, Aug. 6th, which will probably won’t involve a sleigh and flying into the night sky like Colbert, but will surely be as memorable.

The Tributes to Jon Stewart Are Starting with Melissa McCarthy’s Kimono and a Montage of Stewart Making Noises

While the Aug. 6th exit of Jon Stewart from The Daily Show is more than few weeks away, we all can’t but help feel the ever approaching of an era ending.

So, with that in mind, the esteemed tributes to comedy/TV/entertainment/political satire legend Jon Stewart have started.

So far, Melissa McCarthy wore a robe with different Jon Stewart faces printed on it and a collection of Jon’s best exclamations, exasperations, and all around noises was made.

It’s a pretty fitting start to the farewells if you ask us.

Though James Corden is embarking on a whole summer without David Letterman as a lead-in, he is thankful that he’s gotten to follow Dave at all.

Thus, pretty much the whole of last night’s Late Late Show, which followed The Late Show with David Letterman finale, was in dedication to Dave.

Already, you’ve heard from Conan O’Brien and Jon Stewart on Dave’s departure from The Late Show.

So, as today’s the final day of The Late Show with David Letterman, the rest of the late night world gave their parting wishes.

Jimmy Kimmel gave one of his most heartfelt, sincere moments in his farewell to Dave.

Jimmy Fallon gave thanks to Dave for paving the way for what late night is now.

Seth Meyers told his favorite Letterman story as well as recreated the opening credits of Late Night a la Dave’s version.

There will be more of these to come to be sure.

We’re not sure who you are reading this, but we’re guessing you’re not one of the final few guests booked to appear on The Late Show with David Letterman.

Still, if you want to say thank you to David Letterman like all those fancy guests are doing, you can give it a shot here.

Though not officially affiliated with CBS or Worldwide Pants, our friend Adam Spiegelman has put together a Tumblr where you can share your story about how Letterman not only changed the face of comedy, but affected you personally as well.

Hopefully, any and all of any age can see how much Dave means to several generations of folks who aren’t Tina Fey, Martin Short, Jerry Seinfeld, or Steve Martin.

Thanks, David Letterman is a nice crowdsourced goodbye to a legend.

You have heard plenty and will be hearing plenty how much of an impact David Letterman made on comedy.

Pretty much all of it is worth watching, reading, etc.

As Dave’s final day, May 20th, at The Late Show nears, the reminiscing of Letterman’s landmark career has gotten well under way.

This week, a montage of his guests over the decades was put together showcasing Dave in his element with some of his favorite guests and favorite moments on The Late Show.

Also, Conan O’Brien wrote a heartfelt, personal essay at EW about what David Letterman meant to him and the state of comedy even as it is now.

Rest assured, there will be plenty more oral histories, speeches, etc. for Dave over the next two and a half weeks.

Just in case you wondering, Steve Martin’s still got it.

Save for some sort of big star studded musical number at the final episode of The Late Show, Steve Martin made his final appearance and chatted with his old pal David Letterman.

He even made a “touching” video tribute to Letterman both in what he has done and what he’ll possibly do.

Martin also had one “final gift” for Dave to remember him by.

While Letterman is gone in less than a month, we hope Martin will continue showing up on late night to do bits.

The final chapters of The Daily Show with Jon Stewart are coming to a close.

One by one, longtime Daily Show correspondents have gotten offers to go solo and pursue their own show like John Oliver, Larry Wilmore, Jason Jones, and now Samantha Bee.

Being at The Daily Show longer than any other than correspondent, it was probably too hard to do the normal faux segment leading into a tribute that The Daily Show normally does.

So, they just cut to the montage. Watch Sam Bee’s final moments at The Daily Show here.
